Caleb Tatman Dies Saturday
Was One of Monticello’s Most Prominent Citizens
Monticello, Oct. 8 – Caleb A. Tatman, prominent landowner of Monticello, died in his home on 420 South Charter street, Saturday Morning at 6:30, his death was caused by pneumonia, after an illness of three days. Funeral services will be held at the home at 2:30 o’clock Monday afternoon, Rev. M. C. Long officiating.
Mr. Tatman was born Jan. 27, 1837 in Somerset, Perry county, Ohio. He came to Monticello in Nov. 1848 and lived there until his death. On Feb. 10, 1870 he was married to Miss Caroline Honselman, who died April 17, 1921. He is survived by two daughters, Nellie and Eva, both at home.
He was one of the wealthiest men in Central Illinois at the time of his death. Mr. Tatman taught school at one time in Piatt county and for four years beginning in 1869, was county superintendent of schools. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1873. Eleven years later he organized the Piatt county Loan association.
He also was an extensive land holder, owning 1,500 acres around Monticello, and was director and stockholder in the First National Bank of Monticello. At one time he served as campaign manager for Joseph C. Cannon, and was a power in the republican ranks in the 19th Congregational district.
Fifty years ago Mr. Tatman organized what was known as the Tatman band, and since then always had been interested in the maintaining of the band in the community. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, and also was a Mason, a member of the Mystic Shrine and the Eastern Star.
