My g-grandparents, Dennis & Mary (Renahan) Hennessy settle in Green Springs, Sandusky County after immigrating from Ireland in 1848. With them were six children (they had three more in Ohio), among them my grandfather Dennis Hennessy. He served in the Civil War and later married Anne Corey in 1871, farming just outside of Oak Harbor and raising a family.
I have a great deal of information on the Hennessys but not much on the Renahans & Coreys. Fay is another name associated with our family.
Anyone looking for these names?
Al O'Brien

Hello,

I am Dan Dwyer. I was born in the Port Clinton Hospital in October 1955 and lived the first 2 years of my life in Oak Harbor. I presently live in Farmville, Virginia. My father was Edward A. Dwyer, owner of Dwyer Mortuary in Oak Harbor in the 1950's before his death in 1957. As a veteran, he was active in the VFW and American Legion. I was hoping someone may recall him and whether or not he may have been in the Rotary Club. Thank you for any information you may have to share.

There were several STABBAL family members that were living in or near Elmore in the late 1880's through the mid 1950's or possibly into the 1970's. Martin STABBAL died in 1892 in Elmore.

Does anyone know of published transcriptions of cemeteries in or near Elmore?

I would like to find out what cemetery he was buried in, along with his wife Sophia. A son named Martin Christian Stabbal was also buried in Elmore, and his wife Elizabeth who died in 1945.

Thanks so much for your help!

Gratefully - Tami

Long story made short. My grand mother grew up in Oak Harbor & Rocky Ridge. She always had a strong sense of family. She died in 2001 at the ripe old age of 102. In her lifetime she must have been a historian. In her personal effects, my uncle Bob Carsten had obtained 4 huge scrapbooks, which had newspaper aticles,: of obits, church programs, who was born, who got married, etc...

I am willing to do look ups in the scrapbooks of your ancestors. There is no way onthis earth, that I canlist all of the surnames in these books. So, if you will be patient, send me your given name & surnames and I will hunt and scan anything I find relating to your names and email them to you.

Judy

I am looking for Rachel's maiden name and the given name of her husband, b VT, who died before the 1850 census.

By 1850, Rachel was living in Rushford, Allegany Co, NY with these children: Jerry aka Jay aka Jeremiah Frost, b VT abt 1833; Jesse Frost, b VT abt 1834; Amon Frost, b VT abt 1836; Emaline Frost, b NY abt 1838; Melvina Frost, b NY abt 1843; and Hiram Frost, b NY abt 1848.

At the same time, a William S. Foot, 36, and his wife Anna, 38, were living in Ashtabula, OH with their two daughters, Adeline and Ida.

In the 1860 census, Rachel and son Hiram were living with William S. Foot, now a widower, and his two daughters, in Springfield, Erie Co, PA. I tend to think William was either Rachel's brother or brother-in-law.

In the 1870 census, Rachel and Hiram were still living with William, who had not remarried, in Elmore, Carroll Twp, Ottawa Co, Ohio. This is the last I find William.

By the 1880 census, Hiram had married Marie Cover and his mother was living with them and their family in Oak Harbor, Ottawa Co, Ohio. This is the last I find Rachel.

Jeremiah had married Sarah J. Ferguson and lived near his mother throughout the above censuses.

Melvina had married Albert Ferguson.

I would appreciate any additional information readers can provide about the individuals in Rachel's family and about William and his wife Anna.

Thank you.
I am searching for the name of the mother of my gggrandmother. Her name is (MARIE) LOUISE BODI, B. Aug, 1830, Monroe, Mich. She d. 1915 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio. The date of her birth is recorded in my grandmother's bible. She m. Francis Xavier Villers (Veler) dit St. Louis about 1848-I think in Ottawa County. Francis was b. Sep 1831, in St. Antoine, MI. Louise Bodi did live in Ottawa County prior to her marriage to Francis -then they moved to East Toledo. Her death certificate states that her father was LOUIS BODI, b. Canada--Her mother or place of birth was not identified. One of her daughters was named "Rose". Could she be the dau. of Louis Bodi and Rose Betourne, even though she is not identified in Father Denissen's genealogy? Or the dau. of his son Louis and Angela (Moore) Bodi? Any ideas or help welcome and will be more than eager to share information.

He served at Pine Camp, NY in 1940 then was transferred to Camp Perry on July 1, 1940. Later he was re-stationed to Fort Meade in MD. Are military records public documents? Joseph Burns was my grandfather. He is now deceased. Any help with the marriage record or military records would be greatly appreciated!!

Directories or tax rolls for 1870-1880? Looking for Christ Deischer.

An ancestor, Christ/Christian Deischer/Deisher/Descher/Descher, may have lived in Ottawa Co., between 1870 and 1880, but was not present in the 1870 or 1880 census. Are there any city or county directories, or tax rolls from that time that are available from any source, or could anyone with access possibly do a look-up for me? Christ was born about 1833 and so was an adult, but his family had not arrived from Schleswig-Holstein by this time. He was probably working as a farm hand during this period.

Any kind of assistance or leads would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Joe Leahy

I am searching for information on my great great grandfather, Frank Staniszewski. He was from Germany and I believe he came over in the late 1880's. He married Maryana Rozanska (also from Germany). Not sure if they married here or Germany. They had a son, Peter Staniszewski who was born in June or July 1883 in Oak Harbor, Ohio (according to Peter's obit and death certificate). Frank died either shortly before or after Peter was born becasue according to marriage records and census records, Maryana was widowed and remarried in November 1883 to Michael Modrzynksi in Toledo, Ohio. I have not been able to find any records on Frank in census records or immigration records. Any ideas where I should search? I'm thinking I should start searching in Ottawa county since Peter was born there, but I'm not sure where to begin. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dawn

There are over 25 individuals with this surname in this census, but I feel certain it is an adulteration of a French name, and I'm having no luck finding Samuel before 1860. I believe Samuel died before 1870 and Rosana remarried to Joseph PERNEY.
Please - any assistance on the real surname for Samuel would be greatly appreciated.

Ottawa County, Catawba Families, Help Please

Sometime around 1905, Fannie Gamble married Wallace E Smith, and they had two children, Virginia born 1906 and Sydney born in 1908. I do not know where the marriage certificate would be located. Sydney was my grandfather.

Fannie's parents were James W. Gamble (b 1831 either Mississpi or Missouri) and Rose E. Gamble (b 1849 New York) Fannie may have been born as Sallie F. Gamble, from the information on the federal Census, which is where I am getting all of this information. She was born in Nov 1876/1877 per the census, in Ottawa, Oh. She died young, maybe around 1914/1915 and by 1920 Wallace has remarried.
Wallace E. Smith was a merchant sailor and later a captian.

Wallace E. Smith was the son of Mattie (Matilda) Smith and Jacob A. Smith. He was born around 1876/1878 in Ottawa County. Jacob A. Smith died between the 1880 and 1900 cenus, but I have no date of death. Matilda was raising her two sons (variously reported on the census as Wallace and Morris, and Wallace and Mannie) as widow with her "father" William C. Haag (or William Le Haag) living with her. William also died in Ottawa, but I have no idea what year.

So, to summarize;

Birth Cert. for Fannie (Sallie) Gamble b Nov 1877 ?
Birth Cert. for Wallace E. Smith b. March 1876 ?
Marriage Certificate for Fannie and Wallace

Death Certificate for Jacob A. Smith d. 1880-1900
Death Certificate for Rose E. Gamble ?
Death Certificate for James W. Gamble ?
Death Certificate for Fannie Smith 1914/1915
Death Certificate for William Haag ??

Everyone but Wallace was listed as a "Fruit Farmer" on the census, most showing ownership of land and servants.
Wallace as stated was listed as a sailor then a captain.

Any information anyone has that can help track back out of Ottawa County would be appreciated.

Thank you : )

ZUNK, KIA Korean War, Ottawa County

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Ottawa County, Ohio as his home of record.

Soldier: Roger Emery Zunk
Born:December 27 1928, Caucasian
Date of loss: Missing in Action July 16, 1950. His remains were never recovered.

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 158 families in Ohio that have not been located. There is one family from Ottawa County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
The cardboard frame is engraved with "Fachman Studios, Pt Clinton, O. and Elmore, O."

I found census, death, and WWI Draft Registration Card information on a Leroy Franklin Fachman who may have been the photographer of my ancestor. In the 1910, 1920, and 1930 census records, Leroy's occupation is listed as photographer; and in 1930 he is the "Proprietor of a Photo Gallery." Leroy is also identified as a photographer on his WWI Draft Registration Card.

Does anyone have any information about the studio, dates of business, when Leroy retired (died in 1962), if there are any living relatives who may have information or photos of the studio or originals/copies of any of the photographs taken by Leroy?

Thank you!

Debra Nichols
SEUFERT, BAUMAN connection?

The SEUFERT name has come up several times in my BAUMAN family notes and records. I have a postcard from Ralph Seufert written Nov 12, 1901 from Toledo Ohio to his parents Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Seufert in Port Clinton, Ohio. The text of the post card refers to an “Aunt Alice” that wants them to come for a visit.
I have a second postcard dated Sept 10, 1924 addressed to Mrs. Rose TEET that was “c/o R. L. He was the son of Emma (FEWSTER) and William Jabez WHALEY.

Any info is appreciated, but in particular a cemetery transcription so I can enter a proper date (hopefully) and possibly get a date of death for his wife as well. :)

With sincere gratitude,
Janet Jones
janet.jones@ontarioobits.com
LaPrairie Cemetery, aka St. Philomena's by Ottawa Co

My ancestors lived in Section 26 of Rice Township, about 1/2 mile from the Ottawa County border, and not far from the border with Erie County. From what I have found, their connections extended across the county lines between,
Sandusky, Ottawa, and Erie counties.

Some of my mother's family is thought to be buried in the first Catholic Cemetery in Sandusky County, known as St. Philomena's, or La Prairie. Many of those buried there were
of French descent. It is located north of Fremont, or what was known as Lower Sandusky, (or little Sandusky), in the area known as Muddy Creek. It was a mission church, and many of the records are scattered, making it hard to know who was buried there if there was no headstones. Presently, there is a marker with the names of those which could be found. However, if you suspect you may have a relative there whose name is not on the marker, it is very possible you may be able to find the record of their internment, such as I did.
Frank Joseph Witscher, is buried at La Prairie, and died in 1896. The Diocese of Toledo owns the cemetery. What now appears to be the cemetery ground is smaller than what the original boundaries were, since, some of it (some say as much as 1/2) may have been taken over by marsh. There have been efforts by the Gonya family and others whose ancestors are buried there to help restore the cemetery headstones. 3 to 4 of my mother's family ancestors were buried without headstones, and so finding the records is especially important for us, but it is very difficult. We have contacted the Diocese about the condition of the cemetery, and the marsh, where we fear, may be where the section, where those who could not afford headstones lies. I am looking for others who may be having a problem with finding their ancestors there, or who may also be concerned about the conditions there. Please contact me on this list.

The Overmyer History and Genealogy Book states that Elizabeth (b. 16 Apr 1835) dau. of Michael H. and Elizabeth Alter Overmyer, married Joseph Mutno(?) and died at Trowbridge, Ohio. Is there a family in Ottawa County with that name? There are errors in the Overmyer Book and I am not sure this is the correct spelling. Has anyone ever heard of either Joseph or Elizabeth Mutno? More than likely they were married when in their 20s or so, about 1855. Thanks.
Mary Ann

I am searching for the parents of John Mudnow who married Mary Harrison in Ottawa County, Ohio on March 2, 1864. I believe John was killed in a buggy accident in Millbury in July of 1871. John and Mary had 4 children, John, Joseph, Mary, and Minnie. After John Mudnow's death, Mary married John Russell in 1881. I think John's father's name was Joseph and that he came from Canada. I have found several John and Joseph Mudnows on the Ottawa County census but can not be sure if any of them are the ones I am searching for. Evidently everyone with the surname of Mudnow named their sons John or Joseph. Would appreciate any information that could help me sort this out. Also I know that John and Mary's daughter Minnie married William Witte. According to Mary Mudnow Russell's obituary (she died in 1918) Minnie was her only living child at the time. I would be interested in knowing what happened to her other children John, Joseph and Mary (if they married and if they had children).

In the letter he makes a reference that "the Lutherans are here this week. The Methodists come next week...." He also refers to his "cottage in the woods."
Hello,

My name is William Haines. I am a descendant of Joseph (B. 1844) and Jane (Chaplin) Haines.
I am trying to get information on Susan Haines who was his mother and was a resident of Ottawa County. I am also
trying to find her and her husband parents and the names of her other children.

I am told that there is a book published by the Ottawa genealogical society that mentions my ancestors. I'm
not able to recall the title but it covers the history of some of the county's families and was published in the
mid 80's. It mention's Joseph in his capacity of a painter and gives some details about Susan, her husband and their
children.

Susan had a number of children, some who fought in the civil war. After her husband's passing she never remarried.
I have heard that her husband had been a seaman but that's all I know. I don't know where or when he and Susan were married
or anything beyond what I have mentioned. Any information you can give me would be ever so much appreciated.

I am hoping that you might be able to mail me copies of the relevant pages that pertain to the Haines family.
Or find some way to email the information.

Yours in Friendship
Bill Haines
674 Rose Street North #6
Twin Falls, Idaho 83301
208-736-6295
scholarguy@cableone.net

Haskins, Kburg, Austin families of Catawba Island 1840-1870

I am looking for information or descendants of the following families: (Note this is recent information and I'm still not sure about all the relationships) I would like to understand more about their connections to Catawba Island and its history.

Samuel Haskin/Haskins m Jane Austin in Sandusky, May 1835. Family is listed in Van Renselaer Twp, Ottawa Co in 1840. children:
--Franklin b abt 1837 m in 1864 Mary Jane Kburg Living on Catawba Island in 1870.
their children:
------John F b abt 1868 m Frances Mary Moskwa
------Clara C b abt 1871 m Charles Hineline
------Esther A b abt 1876
------Mary F b abt 1880

--William b abt 1838 m Lucinda ? In 1870 they are living in Put-in-Bay, OH
their children:
-----George b abt 1862
-----Cora b abt 1864

--Mary b abt 1840

--Samuel b abt 1841

It appears that Samuel (Sr) has died between 1840 and 1850 and that by 1850 Jane has remarried to Oliver Buell and they are living on Catawba Island. I also found reference to a burial of a Jane Haskins on Catawba Island but no date or more definite location.

I believe that Samuel Sr could be the son of Nicholas Haskins and wife(2) Susannah Smith. I think that Samuel and his brother, Carey came to the Ottawa Co around 1835. Carey was in Portage Twp in 1840 and then moved to Lucas Co. Some of his descendants also settled on Catawba Island.

I have lots more information on the family of Nicholas and his 2 wives for anyone interested in this family.

Chris Wade
