I have just finished my overhaul of the Noble County Schools page on my website.

http://www.oldohioschools.com/noble_county.htm

I am still missing quite a few pictures of some of the old schools as well as some dates and locations. Please check out the new page and let me know what you think or if you can help with any other information. It now loads much faster and is more user-friendly for people wanting to only view a certain county.

Post only obit for Joseph H. Wilson 1838-1908 Civil War Vet.

Caldwell and the entire community was greatly shocked on Friday morning of last week when announcement was made that Joseph H. Wilson had suddenly died that morning from heart disease at his home on West North Street. The suddenness of his death was the more surprising when it was learned that only a few moments before his demise he had gone to the post office on an errand, and from there to Glover's store on the West Side where he was suddenly taken with a severe pain in his heart. He went at once to his home close by where expired before successful medical assistance could be administered to him. His death is deeply mourned by the public in general because of his wide popularity among our people.
The deceased was born February 17, 1838 at Bridgeport, Ohio, and at the time of his death was aged seventy years and five months. With his parents he removed to Summerfield in early childhood, in which he resided until five years ago when he and Mrs. Wilson moved to Caldwell. During the Civil War he enlisted in Co. I, 25th O.V.I (the first company leaving Noble County), at the age of twenty-three years and gallantly served three years in the defense of his country. Thereafter he reenlisted and served to the close of the war, a total of four years, eight months and fifteen days. He took an active part in all the battles in which his regiment engaged, including such noted engagements as Honey Hill, S.C., Second Battle of Bull Rub, Va., Cross Keys Va., McDowell, Va., Cheat Mountain, W.Va., Green Briar, W.Va., Monterey, Va., Chancellorsville, Va., Gettysburg, Pa., and number of others. The date of his enlistment was June 26, 1861, On September 30, 1862, he was appointed corporal, and on November 5, 1864 he was promoted to sergeant. Because of his disability he was discharged on March 11, 1866.
Mr. Wilson was united in marriage on July 3, 1866, to Mary J. Morrison, by whom he is survived, to which union were born , two daughters, and one son as follows; Mrs. Rosa E. Hays, Mrs. Alva E. Osborn and Harry A., all of whom resided at Zanesville.
The deceased was converted while at home from the army on a veteran furlough and from that time till the very hour of his death he was a consistent Christian and an esteemed and honored member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
As a man and neighbor there were none better. After a man passes away it is the custom to say of him that he was a good man. But the The Leader editor knew Mr. Wilson in life and we say from the very bottom of our heart that Joseph H. Wilson was a good man, as can be said of him by every acquaintance. He was a mind, jovial disposition, always inclined to look upon the bright side of everything, devoted to his wife, to his children and to the home with more than ordinary devotion.
The funeral was held from the late home of the deceased at 1:30 o'clock Monday afternoon and was attended by many of the members of Noble Post G.A.R., and other old soldiers and by a large number of friends and acquaintances, including quite a number from Summerfield and other places. The services were conducted by Rev. Alfred Walls, pastor of the Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. W.S. Acomb, pastor of the Presbyterian Church. An excellent tribute was paid to the memory of the deceased by his life-long friend, Dr. R.B. Taylor, of Summerfield. The pall bears were of his old comrades of the deceased and included J.S. Rownd, James Dotson and Arthur Wharton, of Summerfield, Z.A. Dailey, of Ava, W.H. Cooley and J.G. Garrett, of Caldwell. On the way to Olive Cemetery a firing squad from Co. E, 7th O.N.G., joined the funeral procession, which was composed of a vast number of the friends of the deceased. With honors of war the remains were laid to rest in the beautiful Olive Cemetery. Wed. 22 July 1908 The Noble County Leader Caldwell Ohio.

William Miller's obituary was published in the Noble County Republican issue on Thursday, February 16th, 1882. It has been copied and handed down through the generations with a faint copy of his photograph.

Because he was a long time resident of Caldwell, Noble County, Ohio I'm sure there are other researchers out there who are familiar with William Miller, known as "The Oldest Mason in the United States", at the time of his death.

Born in Clough Mills, Ballaboga, Ulster, Antrim, Ireland 6 June 1783. Married Mary Reed in 1818, who he met in New Jersey. Was in Ohio in 1818. Was father to 10 children (4 boys, 6 girls).
There are so many individuals with this name, but seeing this obituary should assist us in connecting

ENOCHS-TERRELL Marriage

My ancestor Joseph ENOCHS was born 1806 in Fishing Creek, Virginia (now West Virginia). Many of the Enochs lived in Noble County, and in 1834 the first child (Elizabeth ENOCHS)was born to Joseph ENOCHS and Catherine TERRELL in Noble County; so was my g-grandmother, in 1844 -- Hannah ENOCHS. I have not been able to locate where Joseph ENOCHS and Catherine TERRELL were married, but I'm thinking it may be Noble County since some of their first children were born there. I am very, very anxious to find out about the marriage of these two -- Joseph ENOCH and Catherine TERRELL. Thanks so much!

Frederick M. Kirkbride of 540 Geiger Ave., S. W., formerly of Caldwell, has been appointed as a patrolman in the Massillon Police Department and has already assumed his new duties. His appointment was based on a high Civil Service grade.
The new patrolman is a son of Maywood Kirkbride, now of Cambridge route 4, a graduate of the Caldwell High School Class of 1943 and served as a paratrooper with the U.S.A. He is married and the father of two daughters. Prior to his appointment, he was employed with the Enterprise Aluminum Co. that city. Thursday 27 Nov. 1952 Noble County Leader Caldwell Ohio.

Fred Kirkbride, a longtime Massillon policeman who rose through the ranks to become chief, died Thursday after a nine months illness.
Kirkbride, 69, was from the old school, said former Mayor Delbert "Skip" Demmer. The two worked closely together in the early 1980s during Demmer's first term as mayor.
"He was a old time cop. He really worked hard at getting to know people," Demmer said.
John Diloreto St., barely had his first six months in as a patrolman when a youthful Kirkbride joined the force in September 1952.
"I spent a lot of time with Fred. He was a very dedicated policeman," Diloreto recalled.
The mutual respect ran deep, When DiLoreto turned in his chief's badge in 1979, he recommended Kirkbride--his right hand man-- for the job.
Bill Hamit, a retired policeman and former safety-service director, recalled Kirkbride as a true professional.
"Even when he was one of the older officers on the department, he kept himself fit and stayed up on the laws," he said.
A native of Caldwell in Noble County, Kirkbride moved to Massillon in 1946. He was an Army veteran and served in the airborne infantry in World War II.
In 1960, he was promoted to police sergeant. Two years later he made Capitan. He was chief from July 1979 until his 1988 retirement.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Massillon Elks, where he was a trustee and secretary. He also was a member of the Massillon Moose.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret, a son Christopher of Bremerton, Wash.; four daughters, Mrs. Derek (Veronica) Stephens of Akron, Mrs. Paul (Helen) Long of Waynesburg and Mrs. Dale (Peggy) Eisenbrei and Mrs. William (Jacqueline) Triner, both of Massillon, and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister and his parents, Albert and Margaret (McWilliams) Kirkbride.
The funeral will be at 9 A.M.

I am looking for information on the William BOON family in Olive Township, originally Morgan County, now Noble County. William BOON got a cash land patent in 1832. He appears in the 1820 and 1830 Morgan County census. He had 3 sons and 2 daughters. His wife was Elizabeth WILEY. The three sons were Thomas (married Eunice SMITH), William (married Hannah BURT) and Samuel (married Mary Ann REANEY). One of the daughters was Anna who married Robert KEITH in 1837. I am looking for the name of the second daughter. William is not in the 1840 census but his son Thomas and widow Elizabeth appears in Washington County. In between these two households is the Robert KEITH family. I would like to know the elder William's death date and make contact with anyone who has information on any of these families.

I do not mean to sound mean, but when is someone going to start listing the inscriptions of people in the different cemeteries in Noble County. I realize there are a lot of cemeteries, but if one had been done each year by volunteers living in that county, a lot would be done by now. I live in Texas, so it is pretty far away to be able to get to the cemeteries to see who in my family is buried there. Hope someone starts a volunteer organization to read the inscriptions in the different cemeteries. Maybe that is a good project for the Genealogy Society of that county. Thanks

Trying to figure out undertaker's name . My death certificates from 1910 and 1911 are for families living in Coal Ridge, and buried in Plesant City (Guernsey County).. Undertaker's name appears to be C.T.Dye of Belle Valley. Can someone confirm this undertaker's name, and possible time span for this undertaker? Were undertakers associated with any funeral homes back then, or did they operate independently? Thanks.

Joseph C. Warner was born 18 Nov 1850 in Noble Co., Ohio, according to his Death Certificate. He live on Chestnut Ridge in Mason County. When he died a Mrs. Cross was the informant. I have been told that Joseph "Dad" Warner had a Blacksmith Shop on Chestnut. His wife was Elizabeth "Lizzie" Warner and she was living when he died, I believe...or at least, it looked that way on his Death Certificate. The cemetery listed for him is Letart Cemetery, Mason County. His parents were listed as "unknown" on the certificate. He was 85 yrs. 7 mos. 12 days. I would like to confirm that he had the Blacksmith Shop -- and would anyone have old photos of him or the shop? And, what about the Cross family. There was an old, old homestead that burned years ago and it was located in what is known as Brinker's Hollow. There were beautiful Easter Flowers bloomed in the yard for years after the house was gone.
