Frederick M. Kirkbride of 540 Geiger Ave., S. W., formerly of Caldwell, has been appointed as a patrolman in the Massillon Police Department and has already assumed his new duties. His appointment was based on a high Civil Service grade.
The new patrolman is a son of Maywood Kirkbride, now of Cambridge route 4, a graduate of the Caldwell High School Class of 1943 and served as a paratrooper with the U.S.A. He is married and the father of two daughters. Prior to his appointment, he was employed with the Enterprise Aluminum Co. that city. Thursday 27 Nov. 1952 Noble County Leader Caldwell Ohio.

Fred Kirkbride, a longtime Massillon policeman who rose through the ranks to become chief, died Thursday after a nine months illness.
Kirkbride, 69, was from the old school, said former Mayor Delbert "Skip" Demmer. The two worked closely together in the early 1980s during Demmer's first term as mayor.
"He was a old time cop. He really worked hard at getting to know people," Demmer said.
John Diloreto St., barely had his first six months in as a patrolman when a youthful Kirkbride joined the force in September 1952.
"I spent a lot of time with Fred. He was a very dedicated policeman," Diloreto recalled.
The mutual respect ran deep, When Diloreto turned in his chief's badge in 1979, he recommended Kirkbride--his right hand man-- for the job.
Bill Hamit, a retired policeman and former safety-service director, recalled Kirkbride as a true professional.
"Even when he was one of the older officers on the department, he kept himself fit and stayed up on the laws," he said.
A native of Caldwell in Noble County, Kirkbride moved to Massillon in 1946. He was an Army veteran and served in the airborne infantry in World War II.
In 1960, he was promoted to police sergeant. Two years later he made Capitan. He was chief from July 1979 until his 1988 retirement.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Massillon Elks, where he was a trustee and secretary. He also was a member of the Massillon Moose.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret, a son Christopher of Bremerton, Wash.; four daughters, Mrs. Derek (Veronica) Stephens of Akron, Mrs. Paul (Helen) Long of Waynesburg and Mrs. Dale (Peggy) Eisenbrei and Mrs. William (Jacqueline) Triner, both of Massillon, and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister and his parents, Albert and Margaret (McWilliams) Kirkbride.
The funeral will be at 9 A.M. Monday at St. Mary's with Rev. James Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hills Memory Gardens. Calling hours are 2-4 and 7-9. Sunday at Adkinson-Feucht-Shaidagle Funeral Home, Massillon. The Elks will have a service at 6:45 P.M. Sunday. Saturday 20 Nov. 1993 Massillon Independent Massillon Ohio
