Years ago there was a George Twaddle who was researching the Twaddles. There are many of his posts on here, the mailing lists, etc. I would like to contact him. After such a long time his e-mail addresses are out of date.

I'm hoping he or someone who knows how to contact him will contact me.

I have information about his query concerning Frederick Hahn of Zanesville who may have married into the Twaddle family. I'd also like to know the name of the specific source he mentioned in a previous post, quoted below.

"We have found a biographical quip in an Early Zanesville history that says that a Frederick HAHN was married to 'a sister of Maj. William Twaddle.' "

If anyone knows what this source may be, I'd appreciate it because I cannot discover it myself.

I will post this on the Hahn and Twaddle boards too hoping to track down George Twaddle.

Thank you.

I am looking for information on this factory. I gggrandfather came to Ohio from Ireland to stay with family about 1820, his name was Thomas Kearns. I am also aware of another glass factory that had the Kearns name in its business name. I am wondering if either of these are still around or if there is any information around on their employees.

Leon

Does anyone have connections to the James and Ann (Brown?) Smith family?

They lived in the SW corner of Muskingum County, Hopewell Tsp, attended Jonathan's Creek Reformed (Presby.) Church in Madison Tsp, Perry Co. I am related through their youngest son, Joshua Brown Smith.

The couple were born in PA and bought the quarter section in 1811. The land patent states he was a resident of Belmont Co at the time of purchase. That is as close to PA as I can get.

My father,Ralph Ruland lived in Zanesville until the 1930s when he left to play with Sammy Kaye band in Athens, Ohio. He was one of 6 boys of Walter and Kate Straub Ruland. I am interested in information about Kate's Straub family. If you go to the Bowers cemetery in Sonora ( outside of Zanesville) you will find much information. I believe, however, my Bowers are buried in Adamsville cemetery. I did not go there. My Rulands are in Woodlawn

I am interested in this family also. I see a George and Jacob Mock in the 1820 census and a Jacob Mauk plus two George Mauks in the 1830 census. There is also a George Mauk in the 1840 census. I lose him after that, although there is a Sarah Mauk, 62, born in Virginia, listed in the 1850 census.

I am wondering if this family was the George Mock (Mack/Muck) who married Sarah McArtor in Loudoun County, VA in 1811.

I believe Sarah may have been born around 1790 and assume George is about the same age.

Would love to hear more about this family.

The LE PAGE family immigrated from the Guernsey Isle ( Channel Islands ) to America in 1834. Samuel LE PAGE , was the 3rd child of Peter LE PAGE & Mary. Samuel married Elizabeth Jane PAXTON on 17 Dec 1846 in Muskingum Co., OH.
Their children were : Mary , Sarah A., James , Martha, Thomas , Peter, Elizabeth T., & Samuel , Jr. I am looking for Samuel's date of death , as well as the location. For Elizabeth Jane PAXTON , I know she was born in Ohio in 1827 , so am seeking her parents names & any siblings. When & where she died is also needed. Family history had Samuel listed as marrying Emma STRAWN , but there isn't anything to confirm that. Was she a second wife ?
Contact me , so that we can share family history.

I am looking for the relatives of Kilian Milfelt (also spelled Millfelt, Muhlfelt, Muehlfelt, Muhlfeld, Muehlfeld) and Valentine. They would be related to Valentine and Nikolaus Muhlfeld of Germany. Nikolaus settled in Perry County, Missouri after arriving in US aboard the Eliza Warwick entering the Port of Orleans 29 November 1834 or 1837 (conflicting info). Valentine settled in the Zanesville area after arriving possibly on SS Sir Robert Peel from London, England, to New York on 28 April 1855. Both Kilian and Valentine had sons named Joseph Millfelt. One of the Josephs (I believe the son of Valentine) went on to marry a Catherine Secrist and they had WIliam W., Edward Joseph, Celia, Laura, Louesa, Clarence, and Goldie--all born between 1869 and 1889. I show a record of a Valentine Muhlfelt marrying a Margaret Sattler on 22 April 1862 in Clark, Ohio.

Any help with this brick wall would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

My GGGrandparents were John & Sarah Butler Clark. I believe he was from Muskingum Co. and Sarah was from Coshocton Co., Ohio. I believe he was born in 1818. She was born 18 Apr 1819. I found where he bought 160 acres of ground in Hardin Co. on 20 Apr 1837 and listed his home as Muskingum Co. Ohio. He married Sarah Butler on 3 Nov 1838, at Ft. Wayne, Indiana "where her folks had settled" and moved to Hardin Co. where he had purchased ground. Her Obit states "her people were Virginians and both of her Grandfathers were soldiers of the revolution"

Can anybody out there identify her parents or his parents or any other information that may be helpful.

Thank You,
David Clark

parents of William H HAYS circa 1868

I am trying to find the ancestors of my great-great-grandfather William H HAYS, who married Mattie J (Samantha J) GRIGSBY on December 17, 1868 in Zanesville, Muskingum, Ohio. Family tradition says the HAYS family were Catholics who did not want their son to marry a protestant girl. I do not know if there was an annulment or if Willam H simply left town or passed away.

I've found a number of William HAYS in surrounding counties that could have been the about the right age, including a Dr. William HAYS who practiced medicine over in Guernsey County Ohio in the early 1870s. I've not been able to find out much about him. A news article stated that he lost a libel suit I think in 1871 and was fined $1000.00. That had to hurt!

Samantha J. HAYS later changed her surname HAYS to HAYES to avoid confusion with a similarly named person in Zanesville. My great-grandfather William Ora HAYS/HAYES, who moved to Cambridge from Zanesville in about 1898, told my father that he believed he was of Irish descent.

I have recenty taken the the paternal Y-Chromosome DNA test and turned up the following surnames that share the same genetic heriage on our male HAYS/HAYES line. The names are ranked from most recent (50% chance of four generations distant) to most distant (50% chance of 10 generations distant):

McCarter (Mcarter? McArtor?)
McArthur
McDonald
MacLea
Henrie (Scottish)
McLin
McCleary
McCain
McKain
McKane
Doty (English)

A majority of the names suggest Northern Ireland - Scottish origin.

So, if you're a and you have any of these names in your family genealogy and any HAYS or HAYES , please let me know. It might help give us a breaktrhough that's stymied 30-plus years of effort by our family researchers.
UPDATE: Old Muskingum Co. Schools

I have just finished my overhaul of the Muskingum County Schools page on my website.

http://www.oldohioschools.com/muskingum_county.htm

I am still missing quite a few pictures of some of the old schools as well as some dates and locations. Please check out the new page and let me know what you think or if you can help with any other information. It now loads much faster and is more user-friendly for people wanting to only view a certain county.

Hardesty/Marshall reunion 1897

Gathering at Old Homestead near Bristol

The descendants of Abraham Hardesty, who lived and died in Muskingum county, and his wife, who was Miss Elizabeth Marshall, of Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania held an annual reunion. They raised a family of ten children - six sons and four daughters, but there are now only four of the children living - John, Mrs. Elizabeth Fenton, Mrs. Parker Gorrell and Isaac. The reunion was held at the old homestaed, now owned by the son Isaac Hardesty.
After a very excellent dinner had been partaken by more than one hundred of the relatives and neighbors, the president of the organization, Mr. John Hardesty, called the meeting to order and requested Dr. James S. Marshall, ex-member of the legislature, whose father was a brother of Abram hardesty's wife, to read the history of the Hardesty and Marshall families as far as the records could be obtained. He also gave reminicences of his first and subsequent visits to his uncle, Abram Hardesty and his cousins.
A. J. Marshall of Beaver Falls, Pa, was next called to give a recollection of his first bisit to Ohio.
The meeting was also attended by grandchildren and great grandchildren of Rev. Levi Culver, whose wife was a sister of Mrs. Abram Hardesty.
Mr. William Ewing was called on and he entertained the audience with appropriate remarks.
After singing appropriate sacred music and a most affectionate exhortation to all to live the life of the righteous, the venerable president, now in his 79th year, closed the exercises with prayer.
Dr. and Mrs Marshall are also visiting their aunt, Mrs. Hough, and cousin, Mrs. Wesly Bone.

The Daily Courier, Zanesville, Ohio
September 21, 1897 p.1

Mary Amanda Stewart married Moses Lett about 1853, prob. Muskingum County. Susan's father was Aquilla Lett and mother was Elizabeth Beard. I am searching for the ancestors of John H. Stewart and Mary Amanda Stewart, were they related?

1820 census--James Husband--Question for the census experts

Hi!

My 4th gr grandfather, James Husband, is listed in the 1820 census. However, I have never found the name by using an index. A Muskingum, OH genealogy expert pointed out that James Husband was there! He can be found two names above that of James Dove, who is indexed.

Does anybody out there know how to get indexers to list a name they have missed? If more Husband researchers found this name, it might help us.

Thanks!

Robert Schneider

P.S. Does anyone know anything about the family of Josiah Bennet? Another branch of the Husband family had a marriage with someone named Evans Bennet.

Mrs. HF Parkins obit look-up please

I need some assistance on an obit look up in the Times Recorder. She's the daughter of my G-grandfather's sister. I can't find an actual record of her and I can't find her mother in the 1900 census or the 1910 census. Here's what I've been able to find. In March 1942, Mrs. Emory Donaldon (mothers full name was Mary Katherine "Kate" Kuhn) of Dayton died, and the Times Recorder listed her death. The TR said she had two daughters and listed one I know a lot about, Mrs. Iona K. Coleman of Mt. Pleasant, Jefferson Co Ohio. The other listed is only listed in the paper as Mrs. H.S. Parkins of Downard Rd. I found that H.F. Parkins ran a photography studio and was an admired photographer in the area. Mrs. HF Parkins died on 28 November, 1989. any assistance would be great.

POLAND, OHIO – Bertha Edrie Fascia died June 8, 2008.
Bertha, known as “Bobbie” to family and friends, was born in Dresden, Ohio on Aug. 22, 1915 to Percy and Gertrude Swope. She spent most of her youth in Newark, Ohio and later moved to Youngstown, Ohio.
She was a member of St. Stanislaus. Bobbie worked at the Plakie Toy factory and the Brass Rail Restaurant. She was an avid bowler and did so until she was 87, when her health made it impossible for her to bowl.
Bobbie was an accomplished baker, famous for birthday cakes and wedding cakes. She won many ribbons at the Canfield Fair, especially for her dolls and crochet, and put many a smile on the faces of a bride or child when they saw her creations. Bobbie was also a talented gardener. She spent many happy hours tending her 40 some rose brushes, which she grew from sprouts.
Every year she and her husband would go to Florida to visit family, and it was the happiest time in her life.
Bobbie was preceded in death by her husband, Gilie “Lou” Fascia, whom she was married to for 62 years and who passed away on May 22, 2008. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Patricia Dennis, Katherine Snore and Pauline Schaffer.
Bobbie had two daughters, Sandra (Bob) Lariccia, with whom she lived for the last five years and Mary Kathryn Williamson; two grandsons, Brian (Linda) Williamson of Virginia and Shane (Anna) Williamson of Pennsylvania; and two great-grandchildren, Emily Rose Anderson and Kevin Anderson.
Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at the Fabrizio Funeral Home, 619 E. Indianola Ave. where services will begin at 12:30 p.m.
The family would especially like to thank Hospice of the Valley, in particular, Emma, Michelle, Mary Lou and all the aides and staff of Hospice House. “The kindness and care they showed to the family and to Bobbie while she was under their care was so wonderful, there are no words to express how we, the family, feels. A thank you does not seem to be enough.”

Courtesy Post
Mahoning
Muskingum

In the spring of 1871, a wagon train left the Zanesville area of Muskingum Co, Ohio, headed for Kansas. They arrived August 1, 1871, in Smith Co, Kansas. Among the families were the Hammonds. Chadwicks, Andersons, St Clairs, Kings, Jones, Rogers and others.

I am seeking information on the wagon train migration and these pioneers. I am interested in the route they took to Kansas, where they might have stopped along the way and what caused all of these families to leave Ohio for the frontier in Kansas.

The Wagon Train migration to Kansas

RE: the original question asked by donmangis on May 7, 2007: "I am seeking information on the wagon train migration and these pioneers. I am interested in the route they took to Kansas, where they might have stopped along the way and what caused all of these families to leave Ohio for the frontier in Kansas."
...........................
A bit of Kansas history tells why those pioneers went to Kansas in 1871.

By 1850, railroading was already big business, with thousands of miles of railroad opened for operation in the U.S. In 1854, Congress established the Territory of Kansas. In 1861, Kansas became the 36th state in the United States. In 1862 the Homestead Act went into effect which declared that any citizen or intended citizen could claim 160 acres of land - one quarter square mile - of surveyed government land. Claimants must "improve" the plot with a dwelling and grow crops. After five years, if the original filer was still on the land, it was his property, free and clear.

What could be a greater enticement? America was already in the throes of its era of expansion. During the 1860s and 1870s railroad lines were built into Kansas, making it possible carry farm products to the East, and to transport cattle from Texas to the Kansas railroad towns. With this kind of expansion, coupled with the Homestead Act, the rush began of pioneers to Kansas. I have been told that most of the early pioneers were from the Ohio and Missouri valleys.
— D. Small Gilligan

James J. Brennan (m?), Zanesville Ohio

I was recently looking at my Clark's Civil War papers, and thought I would share this about a man who gave testimony for him: James J. Brennan, Co. A 15 OVI
=========================================

Ohio, Muskingum Co. in the matter of Ong. Pen. Claim No. 779817 of Lewis J.
Clark. Co. A 15 OVI. On this 20th day of August 1891...James J. Brennan
aged 60 yrs., by occupation a (..aboser?) resident of Zanesville, P.O.
Woodlawn Ave. 9th Ward.

Have known Lewis J. Clark, the claimant personally since 1852 and enlisted
in Co. "A" 15th OVI about the same time he did. To the best of my
recollection and belief said claimant was sound and healthy prior to and at
time of his enlistment.

I well remember the circumstance and fact of the incurrence of claimants
alleged injuries. We were returning to Grafton WV from the fight at Philipi
on a train of box cars (in?) the fore part of June 1861. Claimant was in
the
act of climbing on a car when the engine (which was not attached) came
against the train with such force as to throw him on the coupling bar
between two box cars, and thus both of his injuries were incurred. I helped
to extricate him. I recollect that his hand was severely injured. I think
one of his fingers was smashed. His gun was badly bent, so that, when
teased
about it he said, he could now shoot around the trees. I knew that he was
severely injured but did not know that it was rupture until later. I also
know that he had and complained of (some? same?) and inflamed eyes toward
the latter
part of our service.
TROUT line in Muskingum County

My Casper TROUT (1762-1837) and wife Anna Maria AMENT (1767-1849) lived in Muskingum County briefly from about 1817-1818 before finally purchasing a farm near Deavertown, York, Morgan, OH. Her father, Johann Anthon "Anthony" AMENT probably died in Muskingum during their short stay there.

A number of Casper & Anna Maria's children ended up settling in Brush Creek and Blue Rock Twp's in Muskingum, and included Johann Anthon "Anthony" TROUT (1788-1875) and wives Polly WRIGHT and Ann Elizabeth KONTNER; Barbara TROUT (1793-after 1840) and husband John HOUCK; and Johann Samuel TROUT (1804 - after 1856) and wife Jane WELSH.

I would be very interested in corresponding with anyone searching the TROUT and related lines in the general area of Muskingum, Morgan, Perry, or Hocking Counties, OH.

Craig H. Trout
Lovettsville, Loudoun, VA

MARLENEE

John William MARLENEE and Benjamin MARLENEE bought land in Muskingum Co in 1837. Matilda EMMONS bought land in M Co in 1835, and married Benjamin in 1837. Abijah PATTERSON and his wife were on 1830 Muskingum OH Census, and in 1837 bought land in Muskingum County. Their daughter Jane PATTERSON married John William MARLENEE in 1837.
Did John William MARLENEE and his brother Benjamin have any relatives in M Co? When did they first show up? John William was born in 1808, and Benjamin in 1813. They may have been orphaned in Maryland and raised by someone named CLARY, CHILCOTE, MALLONEEE, MALERNEE, MALLERNEE, MULLINEAUX, MARLNEE, MULLINAX, STOTTS, etc.
Any extra boys show up in your family? Might be these two brothers.
William Dusenberry, Revolutionary War Soldier.

William was one of the first settlers in Muskingum county receiving a land grant for service in the Rev. War. Yet I am not sure anyone has become a member of DAR with his lineage. If anyone is interested in exchanging research please contact me. I descend through son Benjamin Dusenberry and wife Charlotte Dennis. Charlottes parents were from New Jersey but were part of the group that fled to Canada during the war, and then returned later to migrate to Ohio. I have found some marriage records on ohgen.net, and Williams will at the Zanesville courthouse. Benjamins will is located at New Lexington at the courthouse there. I descend through Benjamins son Aaron Dusenberry and wife Mary McFarland/ McFarlin.

Inscription on reverse of photo reads either Mannie's or Mamma's Eltie Cooper. I have no idea where or when this was taken, but the back of the photo appears to be a "gummy" orange color and the picture itself feels like plastic. the lines that appear to run over her face is where the picture itself is warped and whatever it is made of is pulling apart and leaving "rivers" of ridges throughout the photo.

I have traced her back as far as 1850 in Perry Township. She was a widow. I can't seem to find anything about her before 1850. I have no idea what her husband's name was or anything like that. Do you have any ideas how I can find her pre-1850? Thank you.

I am searching for the parents of William Henry Powell of Newton Township. He was born about 1850 and died in 1923. He married Mary C. Jenkins Nov. 22, 1871 in Muskingum County, Ohio and married Martha Rosella Tignor March 13, 1889 in Muskingum County, Ohio. I do not know if Mary C. died or if they were divorced. My grandmother was from his marriage to Mary C. I have reason to believe that William's father was Josephus Powell, who was also of Newton Township. William named one of his sons by Martha Joe Cephus (I believe after his father Josephus). Josephus married Elizabeth Bently Sept. 27, 1836 in Muskingum County, Ohio. Josephus was born in Virginia. Does anyone have any info about this family?

I am a descendant of Levi Claypool via his son Norton of Nashport. Their family arrived in Muskingum county around 1834. I've learned that they were successful farmers and merchants. Levi paired up with a Lynn in his business adventures, and I believe Norton married either a sister or a daughter of this Lynn (Julia F. Lynn). I've also caught wind of a Claypool Mill. If anyone has any info on the old mill or any other Claypool dealings, business or personnal, it would be awesome to hear from you. Thanks!

He left behind a wife named Mae. Is there any kind soul out there that might have access to newspaper films for that date that could help me find out the circumstances of that death and tell me if there were any surviving children? I will have to be contacted off-list (gdburnette@aol.com) as again, I'm not a subscriber at present. Any help or assistance is appreciated.
