Searching for marriage information about g-g-grandparents Joshua Sawyer Lincoln & Ann Maris Dewees. They were married May 03, 1841 possibly in Morgan Co Ohio. Ann is noted to be born at Belmont Co. Ohio, so possibly could have married there as well. Joshua's brother James Madison Lincoln married Gulielma Dewees May 16, 1833. Need confirmation of who the parents were for Joshua and James. Thanks for any help.
I have just finished my overhaul of the Morgan County Schools page on my website.

http://www.oldohioschools.com/morgan_county.htm

I am still missing quite a few pictures of some of the old schools as well as some dates and locations. Please check out the new page and let me know what you think or if you can help with any other information. It now loads much faster and is more user-friendly for people wanting to only view a certain county.
I am looking for Cassius Benjamin GHEEN. He was born 7 Apr 1873 in Windsor Twp to David and Elizabeth Gheen. He married Eva FORD and had 2 daughters, Gertrude PORTS and Elizabeth BRADLEY. Eva filed for divorce, listing unknown address of Cassius, January 1911 according to newspaper article from Newark. The last census I found Cassius listed is 1910 living with Eva's family in Licking county. Both of his daughters died shortly after their marriages. Elizabeth died in 1928 and her obit lists Cassius as the father, not as a living family member. I want to find out if he came back to Morgan County and what cemetery he is in.

Thank you
Katreana

Morgan County marriage verification

I'm trying to locate and verify a marriage in Morgan Co. I have Isaac Berry, married posibly two times either in Morgan Co or Muskingum Co. The first would be between 1893-1896. I need to find out if Isaac F. Berry married a daughter of William Day. I find Isaac living with William in the 1900 census, (Union, Morgan Co) along with a 4 yo son, John W. Berry. William is listed as head of household. John as grand-son. no mother was listed. I know the two daughters of William Day were Annie and Florence. The other marriage of Isaac Berry would have been to Bessie Embree. Although Ms. Embree was from Belmont Co, she's shown living with her brother, Charles in the 1900 census; at Penn, Morgan Co. Any help with these would be greatly appreciated.

I am seeking any information on the burial of my great grandfather Lawrence McKinley Tayolr. He resided in Malta, with his wife Gladys Estelle Barnhouse. He was the son of Charles Taylor and Rena Scott. I found his obit in the Zanesville Times Recorder, it stated that his body was at Miller Funeral home in McConnelsville, and that he was to be buried in Reinersville. I have searched 3 cemeteries in Reinersville: Reinersville United Methodist Cemetery, Rehobeth, and Windy Hill. I have not had any luck finding him or my great grandmother. The cemetery list on the Morgan County site shows a Taylor Cemetery in Malta - does anyone have a listing for it?
Has anybody come across the burial of a Matthew Fisher b 1767in PA died 1837. I think that one of his daughters Phoebe Fisher McGlashen was living in Morgan County when he died. It is possible that her father Mattthew may have been living near her. I would be grateful for any information.

Thank you

Ohio Gravestone Photo Project-Morgan County

Greetings Morgan County Researchers,
I invite you to check out the Ohio Gravestone Photo Project and participate in its growth as it will only grow with everyone's involvement.

The GPP, as its called, is a wonderful tool to preserve the headstones of our ancestors. With the advent of time and weather and vandalism, our headstones are disappearing at an alarming rate. We need to work on preserving a digital image of our family stones as a fitting tribute to our ancestors. The GPP is an easy-to-use site that exists to make this preservation possible. Additionally there is no cost to the contributor, hard to find in this day and age where everything costs something.

Particularly valuable are those very old headstone photos that you have in grandmas photo album. Scan them into your computer and add them to the GPP as they may be the only testament to your ancestors life. Share them with the world.

The link for the Morgan County GPP is: http://ohiogravestones.org/cemeteries.php?selected_cid=58
The link to the Ohio GPP is:
http://ohiogravestones.org/

I am your Morgan Co. coordinator and I am truly excited about being involved. The Iowa GPP was the first such project (I received my experience there) and recently passed over 250K photos in that project. I think Ohio can pass them up and I look forward to us Ohio researchers making great strides across the entire OH GPP. Nothing like a little friendly competition! LOL

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me or respond to this message.
Thank you very much!
Karen D-J
Morgan Co. GPP

Later I learned it was at 155 E. Main. What about the Probate Office? Is it at either of these addresses? Unfortunately, the Post Office no longer helps in these simple matters. Also, his parents (names unknown to me and who were in their 50's-60's in 1830) were most likely living with him in 1830. They may have died or stayed behind when James moved west.

Any help would be most appreciated.....
Floyd Haskett - Texas

Elizabeth Saltkill Anderson chn. James, John, William, Alice, Matilda and G.W.

I have recently discovered that an Elizabeth Saltkill married a George W. Anderson 27 December 1814 Frederick Co., Maryland. The Elizabeth Anderson on census 1840 through 1880 as born Maryland (ca. 1795) d. Morgan Co., Ga. ca. 1890 may have been the Elizabeth Saltkill md. George Anderson-why? 1840 census shows Elizabeth (widow) with sons 1) under 5; 1) 5 under 10; and 1) 10 under 15; and daughters 2) 5-10; 1-10 under 15 and 1) 15 under 20 with Elizabeth 40 under 50 (which agrees with birthdate 1795).
Known sons by census was James born ca.1831; perhaps a son John born ca. 1818 Maryland; son G.W. born 1830 Ohio.
1850 census shows also a daughter Alice born 1833; a daughter Matilda born 1834 and a son William born 1836.
In 1840 Elizabeth as a widow is living next door to a William Saltkill. (Could this also be Salkeld?). I descend from James through a daughter named Mary E. born 1864 in Meigs, Morgan Co., Ohio. Does anyone know of George's roots in Frederick Co., Md.? My husband's Belmont Co., Ohio Anderson ancestors are also from Frederick Co., Md.
I am trying to gather information about James Means. He was born in Maryland in 1799 and married Elizabeth Robinson in Pennsylvania in 1820. Elizabeth was also born in 1799. In 1850, he and his family appeared on the census in Westmoreland County, PA. In 1860, they were in Washington County, OH. By the 1870 census, I see James alone, in Morgan County. He is in Center Township, Stockport Post Office. He is living with a Justus Timberlake as a boarder. Elizabeth is not listed, but below his name is a Susan Means who is slightly younger. It might not be the same person, but it might be that Elizabeth died and he remarried Susan. I would like to know if any records exist for this man. He probably died in Morgan County and he might have married there between 1860 and 1870. Does anyone know how I might go about learning about him? Do obituaries exist from that time? (i.e. 1880's). Thanks!

I found the two Michael George's in 1820 Morgan County, Ohio, York Twp. I belive that they are actually Michael and Michael the second, as opposed to senior, from viewing the handwriting on the microfilm. It's been some time, but I believe Michael the second(or senior) is younger the Michael.

At any rate, has anyone tracked Michael George down to verify if either of the above individuals is Albright George's son or Isaac George's father? Isaac George originally married Robert Rose's daughter Catherine and upon her death married Mary Funk (her brother-in-law was a Rose). That family migrated from Morgan to Perry to Vinton County, Ohio by 1850.

I have seen over the years some loose references to Isaac George's father being named Michael. But I haven't found anything to confirm this or even, if so, which Michael above it could be. Nor have I been able to confirm the link to Albright George.

I'm interested in anyone's feedback.

Thanks, Mike

From a 1910 obituary for my husband's gg-gf, JAMES CARR (1840PA-1910PA) that appeared in a Bradford County PA newspaper, it gave the residence of one of his brothers, CALVIN L. CARR as PENNSVILLE, OHIO. I consulted an 1895 atlas and it gave the county of MORGAN for Pennsville. I looked through the list of cemeteries at this site for MORGAN County, OHIO but did not see any cemeteries listed for Pennsville.

Can a veteran OHIO researcher tell me if possibly the name of Pennsville was changed to something else?

I am trying to find a grave for MARTHA E. CARR b about 1852 WI, wife of CALVIN L. CARR b Nov 28, 1847 Herrickville, Bradford Co, PA, son of EZEKIEL and SUSY ANN (MARSH) CARR.

From the 1880 census in Wyoming Co, PA, CALVIN L. & MARTHA E. CARR had 3 sons:
George A. Carr b abt 1871 WI
Guy N. Carr b abt 1874 WI
Ralph A. Carr b abt 1877 PA.

In 1910, Calvin L. Carr was in Pennsville, Ohio. But in 1912, he remarried Luella Edwards in Bartholomew, IN. So, for now I am assuming that his first wife died and may be buried in/near Pennsville, OHIO.

Any help in pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Also, if any of these names rings a bell, I am more than willing to share what data I do have on descendants of EZEKIEL & SUSY ANN (MARSH) CARR. Thanks.

A listing on the Morgan Co. website of churches & cemeteries lists Deavertown Methodist in York township. Does anyone know more about this church or its old records?

I have a Military Pension file for Jacob H. McKeever, b 1838. His file contains a paper where he states that he married Harriet Burley in 1859, and that they were married by Reverend Moody of Deavertown.

I'd like to know more about the church and its records, as well as further information on either the McKeever or Burley families. I'll be happy to share the pension file data with anyone interested.
LouAnn in NC

Marriage lookup request

I was wondering if someone who had the time could do a marriage lookup for me. I made a trip tp Zanesville and McConnelsville Ohio back in the Spring. I found my ggg Grandparents marriage license at McConnelsville. They wer Issac and Mary Polly Drumm Harris. His son Samuel married Elizabeth Conn. I found their marriage licens. I forgot to look for Samuel's son's marriage. He was James Harris married to a Mary Catherine,or just Catherine Thompson. James and Catherine married around 1860,proably close by there. They were on the 1870 census in Vernon co. Wi. and on the 1880 census in Arkansas where they both died. I am looking for information between 1860 and 1870. I want to find a marriage license for them if I can, and also fins out if he served in the civil war. If you can help me I would appreciate it. I live in Arkansas and a lot of stuff you have to look up in Libraries and gebealogy books. I sue do wish they would put more information on line, Thanks if you can help. Alice Shipley

My name is Sue Wilson. And am looking for any information regarding Harrison lines from Morgan co., Ohio that anyone would care to share.

Currently, I am trying to narrow down some Harrisons, and determined if they are related to my line of Harrisons, who were in Morgan county, Ohio in 1850 and 1860's.

The persons I am seeking information on, are:
Joshua Harrison, b. abt 1811 in Maryland, d. around 1883.
I beleive he was married to an Elizabeth Coleman. I beleive that this Joshua, may prove to be a brother to my Ancestor: William Harrison, b. 1801 in Maryland, and who married Catherine Becraft in 1823 in Maryland. This couple died in Morgan county Ohio in 1865 & 1867. A Joshua Harrison,Jr signed a marriage application for their son, John Wesley Harrison and Mary C. Tedrow, in 1869 or 1870. So I assume he was an Uncle.
Also I am looking for information on a Samuel Harrison, born abt 1824/5, in Maryland or Ohio, who may be a another brother to William, or his oldest son. I believe Samuel married Amanda Worthing, in 1852.

If anyone has anything to help me determine if they are connected, pls let me know. I really appriciate any leads or info, Thanks.

Ohio from Virginia (well what is now west Virginia) before 1813 and had a son Arthur McGill Dilly b. Dec.27, 1814. They indentured him out at the age of three sometime in 1817,1818 to a man named David From. My question is does anyone have any info on David From, possibly from this area in Ohio (at the time of the indenture they were in Morgan Co due to counties being created) Spelling on From could be different say Fromm Frohm etc. Any help in this area would be of much help Thank You!

Is anyone researching a Cline family who would have been in Morgan County in the 1820s? Margaret Cline (1822 - 1894) married Morton Cassady (1813-1858) on March 19, 1843 in Washington Co., OH. On her son's death record in 1927, Margaret's grandson indicated her name was Margaret Cline and she was born in Morgan County. This grandson was raised in a home next to the one Margaret lived in and he was 13 years old when she died in 1894. At the time of her marriage, Margaret indicated that her residence was Lawrence Twp. in eastern Washington County.

I have not been able to connect Margaret to George Cline, the Revolutionary War veteran, who lived in Monroe and Washington Counties, OH.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Millie

Naylors in Penn TWP, Morgan county, Ohio

My GGGGreat Grandfather appears to be John Knowles NAYLOR, from what I can find, his son is Isaac Griffith NAYLR, then Samuel NAYLOR then Jonathan NAYLOR. John Knowles Naylor may have died in 1829. He probably lived in Penn TWP, Morgan County. I am trying to find evidence of him and where he might be buried. Information I have shows his wife was Mary Burson Griffith. Both were born in PA. Just trying to find info to confirm that he really might be an ancestor.

Thank you so much

Becky

Would anyone know why the newspaper(s) are not archieved for viewing online like the Zanesville Times (Signal). It would be great to view the old newspapers for family news or obituaries from the 1800-1900s. I know the current Herald is viewable online.
Thanks
McInturf family deaths of 1880

I have the following story named "The Angel Of Death" dated March 8,1880 written by a Dr.E.G. Coulson about the death of seven children, all siblings, within 2 weeks of each other due to tracheal diptheria. My Great great grandfather was the next child born only weeks after the last one passed and I am trying to find out where this article was originally published in hopes of getting a better copy than I now have.
The parents of these children were the grandparents of my grandfather Bill McInturf and the late Robert(Bob)McInturf both of Pennsville as well as most other local McInturfs of the time as well.
I am going to try and paste the story here(rather long)and if unable I will send a good copy to anyone that wishes to read it
Thanks in advance

PENNSVILLE, MORGAN COUNTY, O., MARCH 8, 1880.
The Angel of Death

In behalf of many sorrowing friends, and in mem¬ory of the most affecting" scene ever called upon to witness, I send for publication a brief account of the terrible affliction and irreparable loss of the en¬tire family of children, seven in all, .of our mutual friend, JOHN L. MclNTURF, of Penn Township, this county.
On Sunday morning, Feb. 22, 1880, was called in haste to see his little daughter, MARY, who had been suffering for several days with what was sup¬posed to be a cold, with sore throat; but found her in the last stages of pseudo-membraneous, or trea-cheal diphtheria, with fever of a typhus character, indicating disease in its most insiduous and malig¬nant form; administered the usual remedies without relief; reluctantly informed the parents of the hope¬lessness of the case; was urged by them to remain and continue my efforts; but all without avail. Death came to the relief of th.e little sufferer at 12 o'clock, on Monday, at the age of 8 years.
On Sunday night and Monday morning, 22nd and 23rd, four more, CHARLIE, eldest son, age 16; JULIA, ag'e 14, eldest daughter; GEORGE, age 12; and KITTY, age 6, were stricken down, and, notwithstanding every effort was made, and every means used, from the beginning, by the at-:ending physician, all that medical science could suggest, or skill and long experience devise for fheir relief, aided, too, by the valuable and frequent counsel of Drs. Holcomb and Davis, seconded also by kind, competent and devoted nurses, John A. Thompson, Joseph Timberman, Wm. Miller and wife, Mrs. M>ary Mclnturf, Jane Matson, the Boid sisters, Mr. Dugan and many others, who seemed willing to make any sacrifice that they might save, a,t least, a part of this ill-rated and broken family, but all in vain; they fell, one after another, like leaves from the forest in autumn. Nothing seemed to stay its rapid and relentless progress. This fear¬ful scourge of the human family seemed to laugh _to scorn our impotent efforts, and mock our fondest hopes until we were compelled to yield our precious charges to the cold embrace of Death, in its most terrible form.—CHARLIE passed away on Wed¬nesday night, 12 o'clock; KITTY on Thursday morning, 2 o'clock;—GEORGE on Friday morning, 3 o'clock; and JULIA on Saturday, six o'clock in the evening. Yet.the fell destroyer seemed not to stay its ravages. The Angel of Death, with raven wings, still brooded over this devoted family. On Friday the remaining two children were prostrated, and on Sunday little FRANKIE, age 2, sank to rest at .12 o'clock; Martin lingered until Thursday morning, 10 o'clock, and, at the age of ten years, followed his brothers and sisters to the happy home beyond.
When I reflect upon the scene just past, it seems more like some horrid dream than the dread real¬ity it is—like some frightful phantom of a disorder¬ed imagination; but alas! 'tis true, 'tis real; at it | many stout hearts quailed and faces blanched with

fear; many strong hands trembled, and eyes unused to weep shed the briny tear. Some, through fear, refused to enter the house, the court where death seemed to reign supreme, and disease held high carnival, utterly beyond human control. No one could avoid being forcibly impressed with the cool, calm dignity with which the children met their inevitable fate; no murmur escaped their lips; their unbounded faith and child-like simplicity in ex¬pressing it. JULIA said she "would rather go with her brothers and sisters, but did not know what Pa and Mother would do without her." When little FRANK was dying in his cradle, someone was about to put a screen between him and MARTINA! who was lying on a bed nearby, he remarked: "You need not do that. I know Frankie is dying, and 1 will die too, and be with him." Such unshaken con¬fidence and undoubting reliance on Divine support is seldom manifested in persons so young. The ab¬solute certainty, to them, that their sufferings would soon be over, and that they would be again reunited, as a happy family, in a heaven of bliss, seemed to rob the grave of its victory and death of its sting, and might well put to shame the hollow profession of many older persons. Such faith takes hold of promises and reaches within the vail. Such intuition, it could be nothing less, is of more value than a volume -of Geneoic logic, or a library of theological lore—it becomes a simple postulate, an axiomatic truth.
To the bereaved parents let me say: You have Dur sincere sympathy and tender regard. The whole community feel deeply your sorrow, 'and mourn with you in your great loss and sore affliction. No pencil can paint, or pen describe, or imagination conceive the poignant grief that rends these par¬ents' hearts or bows their troubled heads; yet no affliction or calamity is without its compensating influences. Go with me to those silent graves and look upon them—step lightly, speak softly, with hearts raised to the God of love, and, be assured, that just as certain as those seven little mounds mark the resting place of the mortal remains of your dear, darling children, so their immortal spir¬its form a happy family in heaven above, ever waiting to greet you at your coming; for those little ones are tenderly loved and cared for there by the peerless Lord of ineffable glory—our regal King, .our benificent God!—
"And oh! the rapture of that meeting,
Of that blessed spirit greeting, .
Is unknown to mortals; they can never
Till they pass the dark, deep river, That divides their world forever, from our own,
Comprehend how hearts once blighted,
In a world of sin benighted, Are forever reunited, on the shore
Of that river brightly glowing,
From eternal fountains flowing,	•
Where the trees of life are growing, evermore."
Dr. E. G. COULSON.
