Dayton Inventions - Strachan

My grandfather, Thomas H Strachan had a number of patents and inventions during his time with Dayton Scale, Hobart and IBM -- I was told that Dayton Power & Light had a display on Dayton patents & inventions in their lobby at one time which contain information on these -- does anyone know who I might contact at DP&L to get more information?

Could some one please do an obituary look up for me? My ggg grandfather Patrick Tierney died on November 29, 1890 in the National Soldiers Home in Dayton. He is buried in the National Cemetery there. He was a veteran of the American Civil War his regiment was the 36th New York Infantry Company I he enlisted May 14, 1861 and discharged July 15, 1863. In 1880 he was living in Rosendale, Ulster County, NY and moved from there to Danbury, Connecticut and then to Dayton. Thank you for any help you can give me. Jean

LEAKE females in DAYTON, OH 1856 and beyond

I am posting to see if anyone has any of these LEAKE women in their family lines. All 3 are the daughters of Thomas LEAKE and Anne/Anna POPE. They are all listed with these parents in the 1870 Dayton, OH Census:

Susan LEAKE--born in Canada, probably in 1847.
Elizabeth LEAKE--born in Canada, probably in 1850.
Mary LEAKE--born in Ohio probably in 1861.

The two older girls do not appear in the 1880 Dayton, OH Census, so it is presumed they have married by 1880 and moved out of their parent's household by then.

It is believed the family migrated from Canada to Dayton, OH in the time-frame of 1856-1858. The parents were in the area until their deaths and are both buried in the Woodland Cememtery, Dayton, OH. Anna died in 1882, and Thomas died in 1891.

Any information about any of these 3 girls would be very much appreciated.

He was a member of the Church of God.
He was preceded in death by his parents Adrian and Audra Plummer,
one brother Burl, and one sister Pearl.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Martha (Osborn) Plummer;
son Roark (Ramona) Plummer of Springboro;
daughter Heather Hill of Kettering; one grandson; three brothers
Roger (Alma) Plummer of Wilmington,
Darrell (Delores) Plummer of Waynesville, and
Gary Plummer of Georgia; and many other relatives.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, Feb. 13 at
Miami Cemetery in Corwin.

Death of David McMullen
David McMullen died at the family home on west Durrant street, Monday afternoon. He has been confined to his bed for about three months, being sent thereto by an accident which occurred in February, in which he fell upon the ice and sustained a fracture of the hip. He had almost recovered from the fracture but the vital forces were so reduced that he could not rally from the shock.
Deceased was born in Montgomery county, Ohio Sept. 18, 1819. When less than a year old, his parents moved to Wayne County, Ind., and later to St. Joseph county. Here he resided until 1874, when he came to Iowa, settling in this county. He bought a farm southwest of town, near Windy Knoll, where the family lived until about four years ago. They then moved to their present home in Harlan.
The greater part of the long life of the deceased was spent in St. Joseph county, Indiana. For many years prior to his removal therefrom he was believed to be the oldest settler in the county. He married there in July 20, 1841 to Miss Elizabeth Bainter, who survives him. Four children were born to them. They are: G. E. McMullen of Irwin, Maggie E. Elser of Cherokee county, Sarah E. McMullen and Lizzie M. Gillett of Harlan. All were present at the funeral, which was held at the house Wednesday morning at ten o'clock, conducted by Elder Meyers of the Dunker church. Burial was made in the city cemetery.

Death of Elizabeth McMullen
Mrs. Elizabeth McMullen died at the family house in this city, Sunday noon. Her death was caused by an acute attack of pneumonia, and her last sickness was of a few days of duration. The funeral was held at the home, Tuesday afternoon, Elder Washington Wyland officiating and Rev. L. R Thomas assisting.
Elizabeth Bainter was born in Montgomery county, Ohio, May 12, 1825. Her father's cabin stood upon ground where is now the large city of Dayton. When five years of age, her family moved to what is now South Bend, Ind. and was the second white family to settle there. She was united in marriage to David McMullen, July 20, 1841. Herself, husband and family moved to Shelby County, Iowa, in October, 1874, settling on a farm in east Harlan township. They remained there until about 1890, when they moved to this city. The husband died some five years ago.
Five children were born to them. Of these, one died in infancy, and the remaining are: Mrs. Samuel Elser of Cherokee county, George McMullen of Irwin, Miss Sarah McMullen and Mrs. Lizzie Gillett of this city.
Mrs. McMullen was a member of the Dunker church, and lived a life consistent with its teachings. Most of her life was spent among pioneer surroundings, which developed in her a character of strength and nobleness peculiar to the pioneer. A large number of friends and neighbors attested their appreciation of the deceased by attendance to her funeral.

I am interested in exchanging notes with anyone who is connected with this family.

Seeking info on Michael and Ellen (Brennan) Giblin. Both born about 1830 in Ireland. Michael from Co. Roscommon and Ellen from Co. Mayo (according to family stories). Four children were born in (or near) Dayton - Patrick, Michael, Mary, and Thomas - between 1857 and 1866. Ellen died in 1870 and was buried in St. Henry and probably moved to Calvary but Calvary has no records on her. Michael remarried and moved to Cincinnati in 1871. I have good info on children Patrick and Thomas and the family's life in Cincinnati, but nothing on children Michael and Mary. Any Giblins out there?

I'm looking for more information on Samuel Rowe and his family.

Samuel Rowe was born 16 Apr 1847 in Ohio (Germantown?)and died on May 7, 1934 in Dayton, Ohio. He married Mary E. Walton, b. Mar 3, 1850 in Ohio and d. Jul 9, 1905 in Dayton, Ohio.

They had 11 kids, but can only find nine of them, they were all born in Ohio:

Georgina - b. 1869
William H. - b. 1875
Lewis T. - b. 1876
Leona M. - b. 1878
Harvey W. - b. 1887
Donald Ray - b. 1889
Elsie M. - b. 1891

I have all the US Census - 1870, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 I can't find an 1880 census for them??

I'm also looking for Samuel's parents, I think his Father's name is John Floyd and possibly Margaret.

Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated :)

My Mother, Patricia Marlene Hasenstab (Young) was the daughter of Joseph Edward Hasenstab and Mable Closson. They had a son also, Edward. (He later changed his last name to Closson) My mom never knew her father. He died just before she was born. April 15, 1934. I would love to find out about this side of the family.

My Mom passed away this past March 7, 2008. She was 73 years old. She was married to John Samuel Young. They had 2 daughters, Debra Marie (Debby) and Donna Lynn.

I am looking for the death date, obituary, and possible death certificate of Harry Magwood who was born on St. Simons Island, Glynn County, Georgia on 15 March 1879.

He left Georgia sometime before 1910 when he shows up in Campbell County, Tennessee. By 1920 he is in Montgomery with a wife named Mary M. and a bunch of Hickman step-children.

My goal is to find out who Harry's mother was. His father was Stephen Magwood who had children with at least three different women. Harry had at least one full brother named Stephen. Harry was named for his grandfather, Stephen for his father.

Stephen Sr. then married Susan Bailey and had at least 6 more children. He then had Susan committed for lunacy in July 1906 and married Maria Abbott in December that year. Maria had already had a child by him in 1905. I believe they separated because they are not living together by 1910 and their son is with his maternal grandparents.

Maria died in 1926 and Stephen appears in the 1930 census with a wife named Ida.

I would like some info on a Guard Badge that belonged to my Great-Grandfather. I belive it's from somewhere in Dayton, Ohio as he lived his life there. It's an unusual looking badge and the dimensions are listed on the photo.

Also, I have attached another photo which I was told was my Great-Grandfather's volunteer fire dept.. I could not find any evidence that is true, and now am thinking that it may be of his guard group, again somewhere in Dayton, Ohio.

I have a great grandfather William Espey Ward. Being as Espey is an unusual name, I assume it was a family surname, possibly his mother's. He was born about Aug 1865 in Ohio. He married Bertha Rossow about 1896 and they ended up in Montana, Washingtona nd then Oregon. I know nothing of his parents, just that a family member of his was a Mayor of Dayton, Ohio, and this memeber wrote a book about his Civil War experience, his name may have also been William. DOes anyone know where I can find a listing of past mayors, or any experts on Dayton History out there?

My Great grandmothers parents owned a Nursery in Dayotn for many years I have her mothers orbit that also states about the Garden Nursery. I hoping someone can give me a name on it. Here is what I know. They immigrated to the USA and settled in Dayton, Ohio, along the Old Troy Pike, the same place where Victora Madlinger died; the area became recognized as the Garden Spot of Ohio. Eventually, at this place, a nursery was established mainly through the efforts of Victoria Madlinger As the children Grew up she gave the business to her children. I hope what i have someone can help me come up with a name.

In 1870 David had remarried to Sarah Jane Warner. and was found 1870 Census- Marshall County, West twp. P.O. - Plymouth, IN

Ellen may have been the Ellen Miller who married Jacob Burn in Marshall County in 1868.
George Miller married Sara Alice Holem in Marshall county, Indiana in 1883, shortly thereafter the George and the David Miller families moved to Brule County, South Dakota.

I was told that the Millers and Holem/Holms were of the Dunkard religion.
Any help on these people would be very much appreciated, I would be willing to share what I have on them.

Hello everyone. I am looking for some help on my Dillon/Robinson family.

Sadie Mae Arbogast was born in 1889 in Tuscarawas county, Ohio. SHe first married Franklin T. Dillon... They had 3 children: Judge W. Dillon (born around 1913), Evelyn Dillon (born 1919), and Francis D. Dillon born 25 Nov 1920. On 6 Feb 1929, Sarah remarried O. Beard (or Beers) Robinson. I am not sure if Frank died or they divorced. In the 1920 census, they are living in Jackson, Coshocton County.

In the 1930 census, Sarah and new hubby are living in Dayton, Montgomery County. Evelyn is not living with them, just the two boys (ages 18 and 9 at this time).

I found that Francis died 23 Dec 1983 in Dayton.

I am looking for any information on Beard/Beers Robinson and Sarah, along with Judge and Evelyn. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Searching for Calvin DANIELS and his wife Mary NICHOLS or MICHOLS who married bef 1890. Births, marriage and death dates and places are unknown. Number of children are unknown. Mining and West Virginia figure into the family stories. Had one known son: George Arthur DANIELS born 04 Aug 1890 Dayton Ohio - according to WWI Draft Card; however, family always thought George had been born in West Virginia. George was living in Saskatchewan, Canada by 1918. There may be been another child, Albert. The family has not been found on any US Census as yet.

He was born on February 28, 1925, the son of

He was preceded in death by his son, Tom Franz; and brother,
Forest Franz. He is survived by his wife of 61 years,
Rita D. Franz; daughters,
Connie Chambers (David Hughes) of Centerville and
Dorothy (Nick) Chaconas of Olney, Maryland;
son, Mike Franz of Kettering;
nine grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; sister,

Mr. Franz was a Veteran of the U.S. Army where his bravery during

and later retired from General Motors.

Dena was a native of Mississippi, but moved to Dayton 20 years ago
to be closer to her son and granddaughters. She was an active
member of the First Baptist Church of Vandalia.
Dena was preceded in death by her husband, an infant daughter, and
three brothers. Survivors include a son, Mike Kersh of Kettering,
and a daughter, Nell Kersh of Centerville; two granddaughters; and
many other relatives.
A celebration of Dena’s life was held Saturday, Feb. 16, at the
First Baptist Church, Vandalia.
Interment at Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery.

She was a 1933 graduate of Julienne High School. Mary was a
longtime, active member of Holy Angels Parish, where she sang in
the adult choir for over 40 years. She was an active volunteer in
the community.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, J. Fred Howe; three
brothers, Robert Moosbrugger, L. Eugene Moosbrugger, and James V.
Moosbrugger; one sister, Miriam Sword; and her parents, Louis and
Mary Helen Moosbrugger. She is survived by five daughters, Rosane
Howe-Hogan, Judith M. Howe-Carpenter, Mary Joanne (Marc) Howe
Vachon, Patricia E. Howe, Diane L. Howe; 11 grandchildren; 28
great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.

He was born in Batavia, New York, the son of
James and Beulah Brown. Neil grew up in Batavia, New York and
married Toni Regan of Waterbury, Conn. Neil and Toni began their
family in Connecticut where Neil was employed with NCR. They came
to Dayton in 1972 where Neil continued his career eventually
retiring from NCR as a systems analyst.
Neil was preceded in death by his parents, and sister Jean. Neil
is survived by his wife of 48 years, Toni Brown; his five
children, Kathleen (John) Wright, Ann (Grant) Hodkinson, Neil
(Anne) Brown, Terry (David) Heath and Susan (Shane) George; nine
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and many other
relatives.

Carl was born November 10, 1913 in Greene County, the son of Ralph
and Edna Ferguson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Grace; daughter
Connie. He is survived by his children, Carolyn Neville of Batavia
and Keith (Vicki) Ferguson of Centerville; and children and
great-grandchildren, and many other relatives.
Following graduation from Cedarville College (1935) he spent over
40 years as a teacher in the Waynesville, Newton and Kettering
school systems, a principal at Newton High School and coach.
He was a talented carpenter and woodworker and spent many hours
lovingly transforming raw lumber into works of art. A long-time
member of Prince of Peace Church of the Brethren (Kettering), he
was known to be a strong supporter of the church’s annual talent
auction benefiting Heifer International with the donation of his
handiworks.
A Memorial Service was held Monday, Feb. 18 at Prince of Peace
Church of the Brethren, Kettering.
Burial at Miami Valley Memorial Gardens, Centerville.

Helen Downing, 89, of Kettering died February 5, 2008, at Sunrise Assisted Living in Oakwood.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Reginald; brothers, Peter and William Chesner and
her sister, Ann Stevens. Helen is survived by her daughter, Joan Downing of Amherst, NH.
A memorial service will be held in the spring with a committal of cremated remains at
Woodland Cemetery.

Bob was a U.S. Army Veteran and worked for G. M. with 42 years of service at Delco Products.
Bob was an avid fisherman and member of The Rod & Reel Club. He was a lifelong golfer and
loved visiting Cumberland Falls in Kentucky.
Bob is survived by his wife of 40 years, Barbara Beel; daughters, Diane (Vince) DePascale of

Edward C. Frazier, 77, of Huber Heights, died Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at Miami Valley Hospital.
He was the retired owner of Frazier’s Black Top and retired from
Delco Products a Division of General Motors, a city transit driver for 12 years,
member of Solar Lodge 730 F&AM and Scottish Rite Valley Of Dayton.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; and son, Jackie Clay Frazier.
Edward is survived by his daughter Vickie (Linville) Gray of Lebanon; sons
Larry (Lynn) Frazier of Kettering and Garry (Lori) Frazier of Laura; sister,
Katherine Frazier of Clay City, KY; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Victor Frank Thieman, 95, of Kettering, died suddenly of a stroke on Monday, February 4, 2008.
Victor was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Marie Thieman.
Victor was also preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary (Sommer) Thieman
and all of his brothers and sisters. Leonard Thieman, Walter Thieman, Alvina Thieman,
Louetta Franzer and Elsie Thieman.
Victor is survived by children Joyce Ann Thieman (Earl) Ross, of Cincinnati,
Pamela Marie (Gene) Pease of Chapel Hill, NC and Sharon Rose (Brian) Sill of Kettering;
four grandchildren.
Victor was a 1931 graduate of Minster High School and also attended Miami Jacobs Jr. College,
Sinclair College and the University of Dayton. He was a WWII Veteran who proudly served in
the US Navy from 1941-1945 as a Chief Yeoman. Victor retired from Nationwide Insurance as a
District Sales Manager after 38 years of loyal service.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Feb. 9, at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church. Interment in Calvary Cemetery.

Phil retired from WPAFB as an aeronautical engineer after 34 years of service.
He was the founder of St. Vincent De Paul at Emmanuel Church.
Phil served as president of St. Vincent De Paul Conference at Emmanuel Church for 20 years
and he served as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Penny, and brother, Dick.
Phil is survived by his sons, Jerry (Judy) of Philadelphia, PA and Tom (Judy) of Dayton;
brother Jim of Pittsburg, PA.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Bob was born on January 29, 1926 in Dayton, the son of
George W. and Beatrice K. (Beach) Hobbs.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Mary Ann (Steinbrunner) Hobbs;
his parents and three brothers. He is survived by his daughter, Debbie (John) Howdeshelt;
his two sons, Doug (Paula) Hobbs and Don (Becky) Hobbs; nine grandchildren;

Mary Frances “Fran” Bell, age 79, of Washington Township, died Saturday, January 26, 2008.
She was born and raised in Wabash, Ind. Fran grew up on a farm with her parents,
L. Milton and Ethel Barnett; two brothers, Robert and L. Milton (Bud) Barnett;
and a sister, Virginia Barnett Mendenhall. She later graduated from Otterbein College
with a science and physical education degree. Fran was well-known locally through her
many activities in the community. An avid exercise enthusiast, Fran taught classes for
over 20 years at the Oakwood YMCA and developed a devoted following. She was an
accomplished swimmer and long-time member of the Dayton Synchronettes.
In later years, Fran had a 13-year career as a respiratory therapist at Sycamore Hospital.
She also worked as an aide at Centerville Schools and volunteered as a literacy tutor.
Survivors include three daughters and one son: Ann (Brian) Jones, Leigh (Curt) Baer,
Susan Bell, and Steve (Claudia) Bell; nine grandchildren; sister Virginia Mendenhall;
and other relatives.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m. at Normandy Church.

Alzheimer’s Association or Vitas Hospice.

Marcia was born November 20, 1945 in Kettering,

She was formerly active in Kettering Assembly of God and their ministries,

She was preceded in death by her mother. Marcia is survived by father Reece Keiter;

Christopher Savino, 52, of Northport, Fla., formerly of Kettering, died January 15, 2008
of respiratory failure due to multiple myeloma.
He is survived by his wife of twenty-eight years, Cindy, and son Zachariah,
his parents Joseph Savino and Virginia Welss, his sister Amy (Will) Muetterties and three nieces.
Chris was born October 14, 1955 in Dayton and grew up in Kettering. He was a 1973
graduate of Fairmont West High School. He graduated from The Ohio State University
in 1978 and taught Physical Education for six years in the Mad River School
District in Dayton.
A series of events prompted his decision to continue his education at the
Cincinnati Bible College and Seminary where he completed an M.S. in Practical Ministries in 1991.
During that time Chris served as Director of Christian Education and Youth at Mt. Carmel Church
of Christ in Cincinnati, OH before moving to Wasilla, Alaska in 1992 and serving at
Wasilla Christian Church as Senior Minister until 2006.
Memorial services were held Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Routsong Funeral Home, Kettering.
Final resting place in Woodland Cemetery.

Ralph was an architect in the Dayton area for many years with Lorenz & Williams and independently.
He is survived by his wife, Cleo Jean (McNutt) Jones;

three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Ralph was preceded in death by grandson, Jacob Keener and son-in-law, Daniel Keener.

She was a member of Bethany Church of Christ, as well as the Emmaus Community for years.
She will be remembered for her involvement with the 'Classics Bible Study',
as well as other ministries within the church such as the food ministry and the nursery.
