Daniel and Robert TOWNSEND of Columbia Twp. -- Circa 1830/1840

There are a long line of descendants of James Townsend and his wife Catherine Allen. I happen to be one. However, who does Daniel and Robert Townsend belong to? Daniel is living on the same property as James Sr. and Allen in the 1830 and 1840 Columbia Twp. census'es. There are 2 Robert Townsends of Meigs Co. during this period. One is living in Scipio Twp and descends from a Maine family. I am referring to Robert Townsend of Columbia Twp. who in the 1850's marries a previously married Ruhama Stout. Can anyone help? Also, there is a Rachel Townsend that married Henry Mace. Ours?

Currently researching paternal great, great grandmother Rosina Wode. Catholic church records show DOB: April 27th 1832, Oppau,Pfalz Bayern Germany. Rosina died December 22,1869 Meigs County OH.

1860 Census show Rosina and her husband "John Lewis Engel"(likely Johannes Engel II from Oppau above)living in Pomeroy with a brother Anthony Wode(Woode). Both men's occupation listed as coal miners.

LDS records suggest couple married either in Pomeroy,OH or possibly in the City of Allegheny(now Pittsburgh,PA) prior to arrival in Pomeroy. The marriage would have been around 1846-1848.

Any suggestions for researching German church marriage records in Pomeroy and locating Rosina's grave?

Would Chester Co. Courthouse be of help?

Thanks,
Rick Engel

engel.richard@gmail.com
Death of Emrick HART -- 1871

From the Meigs County Telegraph, August 9, 1871

DEATH IN A WELL

A worthy young man by the name of Emrick Hart lost his life in a well near Hemlock Grove Post-office, Bedford Township, Meigs County on Monday last, from carbonic acid gas. He had gone down into a well belonging to Mr. Alonzo Hoyt, for the purpose of cleaning it out, and while engaged in dipping up the water, was seen to fall over. It was
about half an hour before he was taken out, when he was found to be perfectly lifeless. A young man by the name of Uriah Nelson went down the well at the risk of his own life and recovered the body of the deceased. He too was considerably affected by the "damps," but escaped without serious injury. The deceased was a son of Mr. Aaron Hart of
Bedford Township, and was about twenty years of age.

Transcribed by Cheryl Hartley

Richard - Martha Jones divorced about 1855?

I don't have a lot on this family. I think they may have divorced about 1855. Their son Norvill Jones married Louisa Hampton in 1858, the daughter of James and Eleanor (Bradfield) Hampton. Louisa was the sister of Bradfield Hampton. In 1860 I found a Martha Jones living with a Cooper family next door to Bradfield Hampton. We think Richard Jones remarried an Elizabeth who was born in WV. I can't find Martha Jones in 1870 and think she also remarried. She was 36 in 1860, so that's a good bet.

Thanks,

Ray

I am related to their son John Starkey b. 1828 OH who married a Marilla Uknown (?Etta M. Unknown). I think this Starkey family lived in Meigs Co., Oh for a long time. Maybe they are also related to you.

John and Marilla Starkey's children were:
Alfred
Nathan
William Henry
Mary Jane
Margarett E.

I am unsure if the children were born in Meigs Co. or Athens Co., OH. I don't know if the records go back that far.

I live out of state and would really appreciate any light you could shed on the Starkey line.
GGGrandparents: Henry (John Henry) Wagner son of Alfred and Regine Sayre? Wagner married a Lillie Quillen. Her Death Certficate says parents Unknown but that she was born in Syracuse Ohio.
I believe she was a daughter of Uriah Quillen and Martha Capehart but the only census available is 1870 (born abt 1861) since she was already married to John Henry Wagner by 1880 at the age of 18. I cannot find her in the 1870 census. There is a Silbey Quillen of that age born to a Martha and Uriah. Is there someway I can look for birth or marriage records in Meigs County to determine if Silbey and Lillie are the same person? Any leads would be appreciated.

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Meigs County, Ohio as his home of record.

Soldier: ARTHUR FREDERICK WISE
Born: April 25, 1921. Caucasian
Date of loss: July 20, 1950. POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 51 families in Ohio that have not been located. There is one family from Meigs County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
I have the family in the 1900 census and beyond, but can find nothing before 1900.

William Dodson died sometime after 1900, as Lucinda is listed as Widow in the 1910 census. In the 1920 census she is remarried to a man named Othello (Arthello?) LOWERY. I cannot find graves or any death information for either Lucinda or William.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Commodore Perry SNOW -- died 1879

Maria , don't go out of your way for this, I have the listings of Mt olive cem. in long bottom Meigs Co. My interest is in Commodore Perry Snow , he is listed as died Jul 5, 1879 and buried there, now there is a dispute if this is the father of son, but I see online it says he is 24, I don't find that in the cemetery listings. I know the father is alive on 1880 but sometimes I have found them on census where they have died the previous Yr. is there a way to find out this ones age. thank you . Jane Boucher valjan@ptd. net. They age for young Perry list him b. ca 1853 Meigs. Co. thanks a lot.

Searching for information on death dates, burial location, and descendants of Solon Hayes (b. abt 1810, CT) and Lucinda Watkins (b. abt 1814, NC). Both Solon and Lucinda died between 1880 and 1900. Solon and Lucinda married 1833 in Gallia county, OH, and are found in 1840 and 1850 census in Springfield township, Gallia county, OH. In 1860, 1870, and 1880 census they are found in Salem Center, Meigs county, OH. They had about 10 children, but most apparently died before having families. Only children I can find who married are: 1. Philena (born abt 1838), who married FNU McMillen. They had three children (Lucinda, Henry, and Emerson McMillen); and 2. Franklin (born abt 1853), who married Maria Grimes abt 1878. They had four or more children (Maud, Solon, Frank, and Florence Hayes). There is information that a Frank Hayes married Rosie abt 1904 in Meigs county but I’m not certain this is the same family.

Any assistance is appreciated.

My g-g-g grandfather, Henry Dilcher, Sr., came to the USA to New York then onto Pomeroy, Meigs County, Ohio in August 1848. Henry Dilcher was quite successful, he owned and operated the Grand Dilcher Hotel on Main Street in Pomeroy. The building was later sold to the Elberfeld's. I know everyone in Meigs County has to remember Elberfeld's Department Store.
My g-g grandfather, William Dilcher, took over the family business when his father passed away. He married Emma Reeves, the daughter of David Reeves.
Hugh Avery Thomson, my grandfather, was not born in Meigs County, but came there at some point. He married Rosella Mae Hudson and lived in Syracuse (right across the street from the post office). They owned and operated a store from the front of their home for many years.
Hugh's parents were William Wallace Thomson and Nancy Edwinnie Johnson.
Rosella's parents were John David Hudson and Sally Anna Hughes.
Meigs Look Up for William Byram and Diana Sarah Ann Ball Gibson

I am seeking information on William Byram b. 1780 in Morgan, Ohio. His wife was Diana Sarah Ann Ball Gibson. She was born Abt. 1782 in Morgan, Ohio. Diana Sarah Ann Ball Gibson was the daughter of John Gibson b. May 23, 1740 in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, Pa and Ann Ball b. May 3, 1736 also born in Philadelphia, PA.
I was told that Diana was an heir to her brother's inheritance for the War of 1812. Her brother was Adam Ball. She and William Byram bought and sold land in Meigs Co., Ohio between 1824-1826. I have no information to back this up.
I also know that this couple was in Wood Co. Virginia in 1810. Would anyone look up that information for me.
I would appreciate if someone could also look up the land deed for me. Any information on this couple would be appreciated.
Yvette
