I am interested in finding information on the family of George WICKS[sometimes WEEKS]and his family: wife, Barbara, daughters - Mary, Sarah J. Adelia, & Elizabeth. I have found them in the 1850, 1860, 1870 & 1880 census' living in Litchfield Twp, Medina Co., OH. George WICKS was the brother of my direct ancestor Sarah WICKS MENGES wife of Peter MANGUS/MENGES [this family is found in the 1850 census living near the George WEEKS family]. The MENGES' moved to NE Indiana about 1854. Any information on these two families would be appreciated.

Benjamin Hill

In sometime around 1835-1837, my g-g-g-g-grandfather sold his farm in Wayne County, New York and moved, with his wife Sally, to Spencer, in Medina County, Ohio. His last name was Hill and his first name MIGHT have been Benjamin. His son, my g-g-g-grandfather, was born in ~1795, so I'm thinking that Benjamin(?) Hill was born in about 1775. There is a Benjamin Hill age 50-60 (fibbed a bit?) living in Spencer Township in the 1840 Census. This man appears to be gone by 1850, and instead there is an entry for a Salley Hill, age 55.

Does anyone have any information about this man (or his wife)? Are there any people who will do paid lookups for Medina County Wills? I would like to know if there are any wills dating from this period (i.e. 1840 - 1850) for people with the last name Hill, particulary a Benjamin Hill (or after 1850, for a Salley Hill).

Thanks,
Natalie

This is a correction to what I posted. An Aaron Smith was found in the 1830 census of Medina county, Ohio, not Harrison. There were relatives of Margaret House, wife of Aaron Smith, who settled in this county.

I am looking for any information about Solomon, born about 1799 in Pennsylvania. He married Magdalena, and moved to Medina County between 1830 (when his second child was born) and the 1840 census. I have been able to locate him in Harrisville through 1880. Their children were: Joseph (1826), Lenus (or Lynus? 1830), Polly (1832), Moses (1838), Catharine (1840), Mary Ann (1844), and Henry (1851).

I found an old post mentioning that "Horn, Solomon, Magdalena" was in the index of a book called The Pioneers of Medina County. If anyone has a copy, could you please verify if this is the same Solomon?

I am a descendant through his son Moses, who married Phoebe Wertman and moved to Barry County, Michigan.

Seeking info about Orlando Wilcox b. Abt. 1803 and Lemuel Wilcox b. Abt. 1780

Seeking information on Orlando and Lemuel Wilcox possible son and father. And their relationship to the Westcott/Wescott family. According to census info Orlando and Lemuel Wilcox were early settlers from CT to Hinckley Twp., Medina Co. Ohio. Wife of Orlando was Lucy and wife of Lemuel was Rhoda, based on these records. I am trying to make the connection between the Wilcox family and Westcott family as my g-g grandmother was a Westcott.
Based also a Civil War diary Linnaeus Westcott referred to the Wilcox children as "cousins" and in the 1850 census two Westcott children were staying with Lemuel Wilcox. A Westcott male was also named Lemuel, not a common name. I suspect that Lemuel was grandfather to Linnaeus and Lemuel Westcott.

Any info may be sent directly to fstuart44@verizon.net

Thank you
Mr. Francis M. She signed paper for Elizabeth's husband Henry's widow Mary that Elizabeth had died in child birth in 1867 and she had attended Elizabeth's funeral and saw her buried in the Cemetery at Lockwood Corners, Ohio. This was a sworn notorized statement on the Fifth of Febuary, 1919. I do not know who Harriet's husband was or if she had children. The official paper said that Harriet's Post Office address was Wadsworth, Medina County, Ohio. Any little tidbit of information would be greatly appreciated.

David J. Hicks, b. 1845 NY

I am searching for the parents of my gggrandfather, David J. Hicks. The 1870 Medina County (Spencer Twp) census lists him as married to Emmer Giar and as having been born in NY (1845) but I can find nothing in NY for earlier years. Any tidbit about his life in Spencer might help me get past this road block. Thanks. erinc@taconic.net

Van Vleet

I know this is a ridiculous request. I am searching for a death record for a woman whose name I don’t know. Her husband was Benjamin Van Vleet. She was alive when the 1840 census was taken in Lafayette, Medina Co., OH. She was between the ages of 40 & 50. Her husband remarries in Wayne Co on May 19, 1842. Her husband’s parents were Benjamin and Hannah Van Vleet who are buried in Crush Cemetery in Lafayette. I don’t know her first name and the last name of Van Vleet seems to get misspelled incorrectly more than it does correctly. In the 1840 Census it is spelled Vanvllet. In the 1850 Census it is spelled Vleet. When Benjamin remarries his name is shown as Van Rute. So does anyone have any suggestions how I can find the death of a woman with Van or Vleet in her name who died in either Medina or Wayne Co., OH between 1840 and May of 1842?
I know – I admitted it was ridiculous.
I’d love any suggestions from anyone.
Judy

Death Certificates for Ohio from 1903-1953 are now available online at:

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html

You can see the actual death certificate and might be able to print it off, but some users are having problems with that function. There is a place to report problems so maybe the site needs some "tweaking" yet.

You will need to register your name and email address and wait for an email confirmation before you can use the site.

When you go to the site for the first time, if you don't have Adobe Flash Player on your computer, you will be prompted to download it. If you have a dial-up connection, be patient because everything will take a little longer to open. After you download Adobe Flash Player, you will be prompted to close your browser window to complete the download process. If you have AOL dial-up connection, you will need to sign offline completely and then sign on again.

Board Administrator
Search for Jefferies Cemetery on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007

Search for Jefferies Cemetery
Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007

In the inside cover of the book, “A Trip to Spencer, 1823 - 1973”, is a map of Spencer Mills dated 1876. It is located, on the map, just to the NNW of the Old M.E. Church located on Spencer Mills Road. This was the first settlement of what was to become Spencer Township. Located on this map is a cemetery. This cemetery is called either Jefferies Cemetery or the River Corners Cemetery. It is called the Jefferies Cemetery because it is located on the property of Gilbert Jefferies, one of two brothers (James Madison) to settle at this location in 1832.

The story goes that many people that may have been buried in this cemetery were moved to the Spencer Cemetery in Spencer, Ohio back in the 1930s. This may be true but there are people that were living in River Corners during the early days of its settlement that should have been buried there and then moved to Spencer whose names do not appear on tombstones in the Spencer Cemetery. Example: Gilbert Jefferies, d. 1870 has a tombstone marker in Spencer but his wife Mary Spencer Jefferies, d. Bef. 1903, is not to found in the cemetery and is not buried in Penfield, the burial site of her parents.

So where are these missing people? In a conversation with one person whose ancestors settle early in River Corners (Rev. Able Wood, whose marker along with his wives are at Spencer) I was told that in the early ‘30s, the stones were to be moved to Spencer upon location of relatives and the needed money to move them to Spencer. Those people buried at River Corners whose relatives could not be found and/or could afford to pay for the movement resulted in the tossing of the headstones into the nearby Black River. This was further backed up by a live long resident of River Corners who said as a child he played around the riverbed of the Black River and that there where headstones in the river.

On Oct. 14, 2007 myself and two others decided to look for this missing cemetery.
Using an enlargement of the 1876 map of Spencer Mills, measurements in rods can be seen. Based on these measurements we contended that if we started (and we did) at the southeast corner of where the west bound section of Spencer Mills Road (north side of the road) meets the north bound section of River Corners Road (the east side of the road) if you go north 245’ you will come to the starting point of what is described on the map as the “North Alley”. From this point we went 576’ due east on the property, which by the way follows a row of about 8 maple trees, all on the south side of the “North Alley”. At the end of this 576’ marks the North West corner of what was the Jefferies Cemetery. From that point if you go due east, that takes you to the river’s edge. From the North West corn marker, if you go 115.5’, that marks the South West corner; from there go to the river’s edge and that line marks the South boundary of the cemetery. It is presently the home of several horses. There is no sighs of tombstones nor indentations in the land indicating cave-ins (an sigh that a grave is below), as it has been plowed over the years.

Today's auditor records, including aerial views of this former cemetery show that alleys still exist. But as far as what happened to the missing headstones at this former cemetery, the answer may be at the bottom of the Black River.

Question: If the missing tombstones ARE in the Black River, how do we get them out (the embankment has a 40’ drop to the river and once brought to the top, should they be placed in Spencer Cemetery or placed near the old cemetery?

Any comments on this topic send with subject: Jefferies Cemetery to fstuart44@verizon.net

Harriet Ada Spencer b. Mar. 25, 1814, d. Jan. 9. 1903, daughter of Calvin and Mary Spencer. Her husband's name was Elihu Spencer. Was he a cousin?

Seeking her place of death and burial. Parents buried at Penfield Cemetery, Penfield, Lorain, Ohio.

Also any information about the Calvin Spencer family.

Can contact me direct at fstuart44@verizon.net

Thank you

Francis Stuart

Her obit is below:

Obituary of Harriet Ada Spencer

Medina County Gazette, Thursday, January 29, 1903, page 8

(Harriet Ada Spencer, daughter of Calvin and Mary Spencer)

Harriet Ada Spencer was born in Durham, Green county, N.Y., March 25, 1814, died in Spencer, Medina county, O., Jan. 9, 1903, aged eighty-eight years, nine months and fifteen days. She was the second daughter of Calvin and Polly Spencer who among others pioneers moved to Ohio in the summer of 1824, when she was about ten years old, settling in Penfield, Lorain county, in dense forest and howling wildness, where the Spencer family, six in number, grew to manhood and womanhood. All lived to be over seventy years of age, and four were over eighty years old. But two (brothers) remain, aged respectively eighty-four and eighty-six. She attended school at Hudson, O., and also at Oberlin. She taught the first school at the center in Spencer. Many of her old pupils, among them were Elwood Sooey (Sooy), the Daughertys another reside at Spencer and it was her delight to talk with them of the history of those early days in the wilderness of Spencer, which has since blossomed into houses, farms and fruitful fields.

Feb. 22, 1836, she was united in wedlock to Elihu M. Spencer. On the same evening her sister, Mary A. Spencer, eldest of the family, was married to Gilbert Jefferies. They were married in Penfield (Lorain Co.), the Rev. Joel Talcott officiating, who was at that time pastor of the Presbyterian church at Wellington (Lorain Co.).

They settled in Oberlin (Lorain Co.) and used their means to help the young and struggling college in the early days of its history. They went to Kentucky to teach in the fall of 1842, in the days of slavery agitation, having with them as one of their company, Miss Delia A. Webster, a Vermont lady of fine endowment. In 1844, Mrs. Spencer left Kentucky to pay a visit to a married sister in Illinois.

At the same time Mrs. Spencer returned to Ohio, leaving Miss Webster to pursue her teaching in Lexington, Ky. Mrs. Spencer came through the “underground railroad,” crossing the Ohio River in an open carriage with a colored driver and earning the everlasting gratitude of the colored people by bring to “liberty the pursuit of happiness” a valuable slave. Among the friends who assisted her on this occasion was the lamented John J. Blanchard, who after the late civil war became president of Wheaton college in Illinois, and Calvin Fairbanks who was freed from Kentucky state’s prison by President Lincoln.

Mrs. Spencer returned to the Penfield home of the Spencer family and for several years lived the quiet life on the farm. But in 1856 she with her husband again took up residence in Oberlin. Her only child, a son, died in 1880. The companion of her youth was laid to rest in 1888. She had six grandchildren: three preceded her to the better land; three are still living; and one great-grand child.

Oberlin was her chosen and cherished home for many years; but for five or six years past she has made her home with her devoted niece, Mrs. S. D. Oakley, in Spencer. She was one of the charter members of the First Congregational church of Oberlin of which she was a member when she died, having been baptized and received into the church by John J. Shipherd one of the two founders of Oberlin, and one of the constitutional covenanters, and has been a member of the church and covenant sixty-eight years.
(Researched by Francis M. Stuart and posted October 17, 2007)

Zebulon Daily

Hi! My great-great-great Grandfather was Zebulon Daily. He lived around Tioga County and all the census records indicate this from about 1800 until 1860. Except, that is, for the 1840 census that lists someone with his name in Medina County but not in Tioga anymore. His first wife would have been dead by then but it does list a female around her 30s with a young child. Then in 1850, back to Tioga. I am not sure that this is him, but this is the only Zebulon Daily listed in any 1840 census that I can find.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to go next?

Thanks! :)

Dana

Their daughter, Anna Maria was born in Bavaria about 1806. They came to the U.S. probably in the early 1830s, and settled in Medina Co., OH. Anna Maria married Joseph Burkhardt in Liverpool Twp. in 1838. Jacob and Elizabeth were in Cuyahoga Co. by 1850, when they appear on the census in East Cleveland. Any information appreciated.

The Old Town Cemetery in Medina was closed in 1910 for future burials. I'm listing *some* names where dates of birth would be pre 1800 or around 1800. So many migrants from NY, CT and Mass. areas based on possible rootsweb connections. There are numerous more buried here, some under the age of 18, that I have not posted. Other than these inscriptions, most won't be listed in census information and probably not in biographies.
I'm hoping one of these names brings your research into Medina County. The family had moved to Barberton, Summit County, Ohio by 1930. Sometime in the mid 1950's Paul and a lady friend, Elvira Gabriel of Leetonia (born 1933)seem to have joined up and dropped from sight. Over the next few decades people reported seeing Paul occasionally, including at ballgames in Orrville, Wayne County, Ohio. Family members from both the Dalessandro and Gabriel families have been unable to catch up with either Paul or Elvira. Any information would be appreciated.

I am wondering if anyone can give me a clue as to the Smith family that Magdalena originated from. She was born Nov. 19, 1791 in Westmoreland, PA and died May 23, 1869 in either Medina or Summitt Co., Ohio. I have a lot of info on this Smith family, but need verification. I live in Michigan, but have been to Medina two times researching. I would like to hire someone who can get me more info on this family. I am getting anxious for completion of this mystery. John Wallace was dead by the time of the 1900 census when Isabelle Traxler Wallace was shown as a 51-year-old widow, living with her parents John and Lucinda Traxler. Isabelle Traxler Wallace's second husband was Cyrus Rickard.

Would also like to know the maiden name of Ernest Elmer Wallace's wife, Letitia Ellen ____.
Oakley Family

I have many records that have many of my Oakley ancestors living in the Medina Ohio area, Spencer Township, during the early 1800s. One, Abraham, is said to be buried in River Corners Cemetery. My great great grandfather, Benjamin, was supposed to be born there. His father was Aaron Oakley, his father was William Oakley. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Benjamin and his brother moved to Arkansas and Missouri later in the 1800s, but it is their earlylife in Ohio that interests me. I think Aaron Oakley died and his father was given guardianship of his kids, one of whom was Benjamin.

Jacob Coller born 1805 in PA, look familiar?

Trying to locate information for a Jacob Coller born about 1805 in PA. I have him listed on the 1870 Census as living in Homer Township, Medina Co. next to his son Henry Collar who was married t Mary Ann, maiden name Smith. The correct spelling of the name is Coller. Jacob married a Lydia or Lyda Stein, born about 1796 also in PA. According to Henry's obituary, Jacob and Lydia (Lyda) had 14 children. He and Lydia disappear after the 1870 Census and I can't locate them prior. Due to their ages in 1870, I am assuming they may not have survived until the 1880 Census. My hope is by giving this information on this message board that someone may recognize some of these names.

Medina Co, Wadsworth Twp, listed in early marriage records for 1817-shows Adam Smith Jr. and Polly Baughman being married in Wadsworth Twp., Medina Co. They resided in Wadsworth until Adam's death between 1840 and 1850 Census. Mary was listed there in 1850 Census with her children, Fanny, Jonas, Lewis, John, Sarah and two grandchildren. In the 1860 census Mary was not listed and other family members, Fanny, Jonas and Lewis along with Fanny's children had moved to Hillsdale Co., Mi.

The Smith and Baughman families were early German settlers from Pennsylvania that came to Medina around 1814, they settled in Wadsworth with several other german families.

Does anyone have any information on this Smith/Baughman family or stories on these early German settlers. I really would like to know what happened to Adam and Mary/Polly Smith. Thanks for any info or clues anyone might have. Are there specific cemeteries for these german families?
