Researching Butler's who would have been in Madison County, OH circa 1810-1820. Some may have remained in the county. Elisha Butler, age 12, traveled to Illinois with Levi Cantrell (Cantrall) in 1814. They returned to Madison County. In late 1819, or early 1820, Elisha Butler immigrated with the Cantrell family to Sangamon County, IL.

I have some info on Elisha 1802-1848 ... if it be the same one which seems to be ... he settled here in Dewitt County, IL. He had a son he named Levi C. after Levi Cantrell one would think!! In 1822 (or about), he & Levi were traveling when they were both around 21yrs old & were asked by land surveyors if one would like a job & Elisha stayed & gained land from his new job, married & had kids, & is buried close by, while they say Levi went on Westward.

There seems to be OH & KY for birth places for him though & I am trying to get to the bottom of that ... don't know if it had to do with state lines at the time or being born in one & raised in another.

Thanks for your message. The message was posted by my late wife who was a Butler descendant, but I have her records and am somewhat familiar with the subject. Some records, including, I think, a DeWitt County history, listed Elisha's birthplace as Warren Co., KY. In 1800 there were Butlers there but as censuses only named head of family, etc., she could never document his parents. Her belief was that he may have been in the Bourbon Co, KY area for at least some time, then moved to Ohio, eventually to IL, etc. The Cantrells/Cantralls moved west but not very far, having settled Cantrall, IL, just N of Springfield in Sangamon Co.
