Thank you so much. I didn't know that I could search the card catalog. I do subscribe to ancestry. Has been really helpful in my search for family. According to everything I've seen it has been Martha. But thanks for the heads up...

Again thanks so much....

I have checked records and found that Martha was actually Mary Gibson. There is considerable info, pics and other records on Ancestry but not obit. If you don't already subscribe to Ancestry you can get free access through any LDS Family History Center or other genealogy libraries.

Lois Casson

Sidney's obit can be found on Ancestry. Click on "Search" and then "Card Catalog." Enter "Newark Advocate" for your search term. It was published on 9 Aug 1969 and is on page 7 top left page.

There are no records here for 1981, but the Licking County Genealogy Society may be of help. They have been very helpful to me.
No, not Ancestry.

There is a big Mitchell study on Family Tree y-DNA. There are so very many Mitchell lines! It would be so helpful to see which group we are associated with so that research on the family could be narrowed down somewhat. It was so helpful to me when we did this with my Merritt nephew and found that our Merritts were in VA in the 1600's, some of the first to settle from Jamestown era.

I would like to make some significant inroads with Abel Mitchell (1806) line. I would be willing to sponsor him as far as cost goes...seems like it was in the $150 to $200 range. They would send him a packet with swabs and he would rub the inside of his cheeks real good and put the swabs in some provided containers, then mail back in a special provided envelope.

I have not found any other living male Mitchell that would be willing to do this, unless perhaps he has Mitchell sons or grandsons. I beg. We don't seem to know for sure even if Abel's father is John or not. I haven't heard anyone give evidence of that information. It could make a big difference for those of us who have this passion to KNOW! Ha Ha! E-mail me at nimblethimble53@yahoo.com.

Hi Georgia. Glad to see you are still around. I can get in touch with the son of Mark F. Mitchell (Mark is a son of Abel Sampson Mitchell, son of Lorenzo Dow Mitchell) and see if he would be willing. Are you wanting an "Ancestry" test or a different one? I guess I'd be surprised if he would agree but I am willing to ask. :) Suzanne

i am trying to find a living male mitchell descendent for dna study. Are there any remaining Male Mitchells from John T, Lorenzo Dow, Barzilla, or Holba? Lorenzo had sons who went to Kansas...Richard Emulus and Abel Sampson, and a son who went to Colorado..William Dow. Does anyone know if they had sons and what their names were? The others sons, Lafayette and Gary did not have sons as far as I know.
Would love to be able to find out more about which Mitchells we belong to since there are so MANY lines here in the United States.
Or perhaps Lorenzo Dow (et al) father Abel has known brothers who have had sons. They were a fertile bunch...SURELY the line has not died out in the past generation.

On Monday, Apr 29, I visited Porter Cemetery in Licking Co. I could tell that the headstones of my 4th great grandparents, Stephen and Sarah Robinson had very recently been stood back up. The grass in front of them was brown and I could see an outline of where the headstones had been laying on the ground. These were the only 2 headstones that had been touched. I am wondering if anyone knows who might be responsible for standing these stones back up? It could be that I have a relative that I don't know about. Thanks for any and all information.

James &Margaret Cunningham - Licking & Richland County Ohio
In 1873, a furious debate took place on the pages of the newspaper Richland Shield and Banner over just who was the first white child born in Mansfield, Ohio — white back then meaning not an Indian.

In this corner, backing Mansfield H. Gilkison, were essentially the old guard of the city, and in that corner, literally the southeastern corner of the county, were supporters of Matilda, James and Margaret Cunningham’s daughter.

What stirred this contention after more than 60 years is anybody’s guess. My guess is the folks in Worthington Township were rather tired of Gilkison claiming the title. Leading the charge was Thomas B. Andrews, an old friend of the Cunningham family and whose younger brother, John, had married Matilda’s youngest sister, Sally.

Andrews’ word carried quite a bit of weight since he essentially named Independence (Butler), was its first postmaster and a justice of the peace in the township for 21 years. He also served as county commissioner for two terms.

Andrews kept a scrapbook consisting of newspaper articles, sometimes with handwritten notes, pasted into an outdated and boring book (agricultural statistics) and carefully clipped out all the letters pro and con Matilda’s claim — well, actually her family’s claim — since at this point she had been dead about a decade, leaving a husband, William Perry, and six children, all in Worthington Township.

Gilkison had the advantage of still being alive at 62 and still living in Mansfield, where everyone had decades of getting used to the idea of his holding this honor. He was rather offended by the challenge to his birthright, to say the least.

Among the letters supporting Matilda was one from her mother, really the ultimate authority because she was right there, and another from her elder half sister, Elizabeth Cunningham Baughman, who was the mother of historian A.J. Baughman. Both letters are full of wonderful detail of Mansfield’s first days.

On Jan. 31, 1873, Margaret Cunningham wrote:

THOMAS B. ANDREWS, ESQ., DEAR SIR

Having seen an article in the Shield and Banner of the 22nd ult. censuring you for vindicating the truth in this, that my daughter Matilda was the first white child born in the town of Mansfield, I submit this my statement in reference to the matter.

My husband and myself came to Mansfield in May 1809. August 23, 1809, we had a daughter born to us in the town of Mansfield when there was but one log cabin in the place, built by a Mr. Martin for a boarding house.

Mr. Martin lived in this cabin but a short time and left abruptly, having sold whiskey to the Indians contrary to law. Some one threatened to prosecute him for the offence, and he left. As soon as he left, Mr. Jacob Newman, living near or what was more recently called Beam’s or Campbell’s Mill, came with his team and moved us from where we lived on a piece of land about one or two miles below said mill belonging to my uncle, Henry Myers, to the aforesaid house for the purpose of boarding those that might attend the selling of the school lands and town lots.

Winn Winship, Mr. Wallace and a Mr. Pearce, boarded with us. Pearce was the crier of the sale. Winn Winship boarded with us until Mr. Coffinberry came out and built a house, I think on the angling corner of the square from our house. We used water from the big spring — our house was up the hill from the spring on or near the corner of the square nearest the spring. We did not cross any running water between our house and the spring.

Mr. Coffinberry and a Mr. Bryson built their houses about the same time. These are the three houses said to be here at the time the father and mother of M.H. Gilkison came, as claimed by Mrs. Gilkison in an interview I had with her at the county fair in 1869, to Mansfield. This Mr. Gilkison did not come here with Mr. Coffinberry, but his brother did, who also married a Coffinberry.

This Winn Winship was a singular little man, short, round face, dark complexion, very talkative, wore a cue, quite a fop, was not very particular what he ate so that he got milk and after we discharged him, he went to Mr. Coffinberry’s to board. He used to send little George Coffinberry down to our house every day with a tin quart cup for milk with a silver sixpence always in the cup.

We remained in this house until about October 1810 when we moved to a cabin in what is now Monroe Township near the St. John’s Church, where our second child was born November 16th, 1810. After the Coffinberry and Bryson houses were built, Mr. Jacob Newman sold out at the mill and came and built a log house near the town — I think south of where we lived.

On March 1, 1873, Elizabeth elaborated, in essence speaking for their father:

I am the eldest daughter of Capt. James Cunningham, and know that the statement of Mr. Andrews concurs with what my father always claimed…

When he first came to this county he located two or three miles southeast of where the city now stands, near, I believe, to the place where the block-house was afterwards built. A log cabin was afterward erected on the present site of Mansfield, It stood, I think, near where Mr. Keating now lives, at the northeast corner of the park, and a man (whose name I have forgotten) moved into it. But for selling whisky to the Indians in violation of law — a Congressional Act, I suppose — he had to leave the county. The seat of justice, I think, was at Clinton, Knox County.

One of the proprietors of the (then-contemplated) town of Mansfield got father to consent to move into the cabin to board the coming surveying party and entertain persons who might come to buy town lots, etc. But my stepmother’s consent was not so easily obtained.

She said they had but little to eat themselves and were not prepared to “keep tavern.” She was told they had as much as their neighbors, etc. She consented. ...

Father shelled two bushels of corn, “packed” the same day on horseback to the mills near Clinton, remained there all night and returned home with the meal the next day. The day following, they removed to the cabin spoken of, which was — father always claimed — the first house built in Mansfield and the only one here at the time.

Their bill of fare consisted chiefly of cornbread and wild meats. And in that same cabin on the 23d day of August, 1809, my half sister, Matilda, was born. Father only remained there about a year, then removed to the Greentown settlement on the Black Fork, where on Nov. 16, 1810, the next child, Mary was born.

In 1812, father returned with the family to Licking County. He then entered the army. At the close of the war he returned to Licking County where he taught school one winter, then came again to this county and located near the Kinney — now know as the Pervine & Darling — mills on the Clear Fork, about three miles below Newville, where he remained until about 1824, then removed to Worthington Tp., to what is known as the McKibben farm, where he lived for several years, then purchased the adjoining farm, where he lived until his death in August 1870.

I have often heard father say that Mansfield H. Gilkison was the first white MALE child born in Mansfield. In fact, it is of MALE CHILDREN that mention is generally made. … Had father remained permanently in town or had the child been a boy, the fact, no doubt it would have been better remembered...”

NEXT WEEK: The Gilkison side of the argument.

Peggy Mershon is a retired copy editor and local historian.
