Marvin L. Smith, 78, passed away November 13, 2014, at the Selma Markowitz Hospice Care Center.
He was born October 27, 1936, in Newark, Ohio, to the late Leonard B. and Cora (Sheppard) Smith.
Marvin was a 1954 graduate of Newark High School where he excelled in football, basketball, and track.
He pursued his love of sport by playing football and running track for Denison University, where he graduated in 1958.
Some of his athletic honors included receiving an honorable mention All American in football and being inducted into the Denison Athletic Hall of Fame.
Upon graduation he started his professional career with Owens Corning.
After 34 years of dedicated service he retired in 1993.
In retirement, Marvin and his wife Sandy enjoyed traveling and spent many of their winters in Siesta Key, Florida.
Marvin was a volunteer of the Junior Golf Association in Licking County, supporting the Licking County Settlers, and being an active Denison Alumnus, where he served on the Athletic Hall of Fame board.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Saundra J. (Culp) Smith; children, M. Scott (Tish) Smith of Atlanta, Georgia, Lucinda (Rod) Wilkins of Granville, Ohio, and Gregg Smith of Chicago, Illinois, and grandchildren, Ryan Wilkins, Patrick Wilkins, Tyler Smith, Hunter Bailey, Sydney Smith, Andrew Smith, and Conrad Smith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Smith; sisters, Wilma Murphy, Nina Gilligan, and Martha Spaulding, and daughter-in-law, Julie Smith.
A Celebration of Life service for Marvin L. Smith, 78, of Newark, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 19, at Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home.
Family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, two hours prior to the service, at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st St. Newark.
In lieu of flowers, Marvin requested that friends and family perform an act of kindness in his memory.
