UPDATE: Lake Co. Schools

I have just finished my overhaul of the Lake County Schools page on my website.

http://www.oldohioschools.com/lake_county.htm

I am still missing quite a few pictures of some of the old schools as well as some dates and locations. Please check out the new page and let me know what you think or if you can help with any other information. It now loads much faster and is more user-friendly for people wanting to only view a certain county.
I ma searching for any information on the Paytosh family who lived in lake County in the late 1800s and early 1900s. My grandmother was Mary Paytosh. He father's name was John Paytosh, who is said to have owned a restaurant or bar in Fairport Harbor, OH that featured silver dollars embedded in the bar.

Mary's siblings included: John, George, Steve and Harold. Their wives were (respectively): Anna, Anna, and Mary. Harold died in a boating accident and never married. Eventually, Mary married Harry Zick of Akron, OH, and they lived in Cleveland, later Maple Heights.

I'd love to hear from anyone who can help me find more information on John Paytosh's bar rumor has it that it may been more than a bar, i.e. a "gentleman's club), John's wife's name, more about how Harold died, and anything else. Also if any other Paytosh descendents are out there, I'd love to get in touch.

I've been banging my head against a solid brickwall in the finger lakes area for this man when it occured to me that maybe I was looking in the wrong place. and maybe not, but I'll give it a shot.
Samuel lived in towns and villages around the western finger lake in New York, and we know from his father Peter's probate that Samuel died before 1850. in 1850 we find two of Samuel's children, who are mentioned in Peter's probate, living in Lake Co., OH, with a completely unrelated family. we don't know and haven't found the story behind this, but maybe Samuel removed to Ohio, was friends with Ephraim Marsh and gave his children into guardianship to Ephraim. it's only a hypothesis at this time.
can anyone tell me if there is a burial or any record for Samuel in Lake Co.? I have searched one cemetery without any luck, Perry cemetery, in the town the family lived in. a search of the OH GenWeb site brings forth no Harpending's.

Lake County Marriage Indexes

I had an uncle [Michael Galanda] that managed to get married somewhere between 6 and 8 times. No one is quite sure, neither was he before he passed away <s>. I've found a couple of the marriages in Cuyahoga County, there was one in CA that I've found, and it's suspected that three marriages occurred in Lake County.

His last marriage in Cuyahoga County was c 1948 [I've already got the marriage record on request for that one] and the marriage in CA was in 1965. I suspect that the Lake County marriages most likely occurred between 1948-1958.

I've been unable to find any on-line indexes for marriages in Lake County; I imagine they exist. Is anyone aware of a ource?...I'm trying to avoid sending an e-mail [or letter] to Lake County looking for three marriages between such a wide range of years.

TIA,
Jim

Thomas Earl Railling, POW/MIA Korean War

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Lake County, Ohio as his home of record.

Soldier: THOMAS EARL RAILLING
Born: April 9, 1929. Caucasian
Date of loss: July 14, 1950. POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 51 families in Ohio that have not been located. There is one family from Lake County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
The date range is from 1800 to 1952 when my great grandmother, Ada Carrie Buffington Sharp died in the Madison Home in Lake County Ohio. I am especially interested in determining HOW the family ended up in Kirtland and then in Willoughby. Was there a Morman connection? I believe that originally the Buffingtons were Quakers in Massachusetts.
Thanks
Sally Young-McConnell

She lived, with her husband, at 6304 Carl Avenue in Cleveland.
She was buried in Calvary Cemetery; 10000 Miles Ave; Cleveland, OH 44105 very close to where my John Balluer parents were buried.

Since she was only 19 years old when she died, and my John was about the same age, I'm wondering if she was a first marriage?

Can you help?

I’m looking into the parentage of ANNA ALLEN who would have to have been born by 1800 or earlier. She was the mother of Allen T. Ontis (born Jan. 12, 1817) and probably the mother of Eliphalet S. Ontis (born about 1818-1819). Both of these births would have occurred in Salina, Onondaga County, where Henry Ontis (Ontos/Ontus, Antis? etc.) lived since at least 1812. All this comes from a Family Bible that is short on details.
Son Allen lived in Auburn until moving to Kansas in 1857.
Eliphalet S. moved to Lake County Ohio by 1846 and the Bible mentions that Anna Allen died in "Wainsville Ohio" in 1856, but Painesville Ohio is most probably meant. I still find nothing on her there.
Allen’s obituary claims “Ethan Allen, the hero of Ticonderoga, was his Uncle, and he was named after him and probably the “T” in his name stands for Ticonderoga.”
So I’m looking for “Allen” family connections for this Anna, who moved to Ohio, any connections welcome.
