I am trying to track down the family of Elmer W. Colby of Kirtland, Ohio. I have him as being born in May 1880 and married to Henrietta E. (Stella) Cole, born in Aril 1878. They had three daughters that I am aware of, and Mary J. born about 1904, was my father's mother. Any help with his ancestors or descendents will be greatly appreciated.

I see a Stella Colby's death certificate online- 1933, Wickliffe, Ohio and it states her maiden name was Smith, daughter of Guy and Mary ___ Smith, and that her spouse was Elmer W.

Also of a son Leonard, but this one states Stella's maiden name was Gilmore. This cert. states father Elmer of Kirtland.

I have Colby blood as well, but Elmer's name caught my eye. The 1860 Hamden, Geauga, Ohio census lists a Elmer W Colby born in 1852 - probably his father. I suspect Elmer W. Sr may be the brother of my great great great grandmother Amelia Ann Colby who also had a brother Albert C. Colby. Amelia's father was born in Vermont in 1809. Email me and I'll explain my theories. The Colby's are an elusive bunch...

Have you had luck finding information? There's a John L and Jane L Colby parents of Elmer W buried in South Kirtland Cemetery. I may also know someone with a tin-type of Elmer.

Thanks so much for your reply. I would love to see the tintype of Elmer. I do have John and Jane Colby listed as the parents of my Elmer. Elmer was my father's birth grandfather, and I would love to show Dad a picture of any of his relatives, as he was adopted. Elmer married Stella (Henrietta) Cole, and they had I think 3 daughters. Mary was my birth grandmother--Dad's mom. Daddy is still alive and well at 87.5 years, and this would be such a treat, as he has never known any relatives.

The information I have on John L. Colby is that he was born in Ohio in May 1846. He married Jane L. Gilmon (date unknown) who was born May 1844 in Ohio. I have two children--am sure there must have been more--Elmer W. Colby, born May 1880 and Amos Colby, born 1874.

If you have any additional information on the Colby line, I would love to work with you to see if we can connect your Thomas to the Ohio Colbys. It would have made some sense that Colbys from Vermont might have moved to the Western Reserve in Ohio.

Mary J. Colby, b. 1905, was my father's birth mother. He was born in 1922 in Cleveland, OH and she was listed as his mother on the birth certificate as unmarried and 17. I am trying to find any pictures or other information on this Colby family that I can share with my father. He has never seen any blood relatives and this would be such a gift for him. Do you know anyone with any such information? Where do you fit into this Colby family? Do you have any other people you are in touch with who are connected to this line?
