Little Emma Crawford, aged 8, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Calvin Ollie Crawford, of Gambier, died at Mercy Hospital in Mt. Vernon Thursday evening as a result of burns sustained while playing with matches at Gambier Thursday afternoon. The child was burned to almost a crisp from her chin to her feet. The child was playing with a companion, Jessie Rush, at the home of the latter's mother. There was no one at the home but the two girls. The two had been playing with matches, and it is said that Emma Crawford was attempting to light a fire in an old stove which stood in the yard when the flames blew against her dress. In an instant she was a mass of flames. [Richland County (OH) Leader: 31 May 1923, Vol. 2, No. 21]
