I'm looking to find any information on an Archibald Odbert that was married to Cordelia Bartlett in Steubenville, 1849. I'd like to find out who Archibald's parents and siblings were, but any information on Odbert families in Ohio around that time (early 1800's) would be appreciated.

Thomas or Julia Seals, early 1800's

Thomas and Julia were both born in the first decade of the 1800's. I can trace Thomas and Julia through the census with their families in Jefferson Co. Both were born in Ohio and lived in Wells Twp and Smithfield during their lives. I believe I have most of the documentation for their lives in Jefferson Co.

Does anyone have these names in your early Seals' family? I am aware of the Nathan Seals/Matilda Moore family of Belmont Co which was shared with me by another researcher. Although my names are of the same period, they are not siblings of Nathan as far as we can tell. Since no parents have been proven for Nathan or those in Jefferson Co, this is still a puzzle to be solved.

I am looking for parents and/or siblings. Since Julia married in Wells Twp to Jacob Cox in 1828 at the home of her father-in-law, I keep wondering where her parents lived, or even if they were alive at this point in time.

Any help or suggestions for further research would be appreciated.

My husband's grandfather, John P. Clary, worked on the railroad and was killed by a train in the Gould's Tunnel. He is buried in Steubenville, Ohio in a Catholic Cemetery. He died 02-08-1907. Would love to find an obit for him. Can someone help us? Thanks.

Reference is made to 1910 Steubenville Twp, Jefferson Co., census of a Ray Lloyd, son-in-law, 24 OH OH OH. (626-182-147--line 79)
1. I can't seem to read the head of household's name where he, his wife and child are staying with.
It begins with an "E" but his wife name looks like Eunice?
Anyway I can't find the spelling of this in the 1910 census of Jefferson Co. in order to verify. I think his first name is Morris??
2. Ray Lloyd's wife's name is also un-readable. Although their daughter name is Wilma E.
Appreciate any help in transcribing this census entry.
L.P.
I recently came in possession of some old family photos -- so old we are having difficulty identifying the who, when, and where of the subjects!

Some of the photos are stamped "Electric Studio, 144 South 4th St., Steubenville, OH" -- does anyone have any knowledge of this studio? In particular, I am trying to find out when it was in operation (or if it still is, as I am not from the area) so I can narrow down the window of time in which these photos were taken.

I would greatly appreciate any info you can share!
Thank you!

Please check out the new page and let me know what you think or if you can help with any other information. It now loads much faster and is more user-friendly for people wanting to only view a certain county.

Found at missinglinks@ petuniapress.com

" I have a shoe box full of picture and assorted memorabilia
from Pennsylvania in the early 1900s. I used to work at an
antique store here in Vine Grove, Kentucky, and the owners were
going to throw these away. They had bought a lot of items from
an older woman and these things were in the box. She died soon
thereafter. I was told she had no living relatives. I have had
this box for almost ten years now and still don't have the heart
to throw it away.
Most of the pictures have names and dates on the back. Most
seem to be of a STURGIS family, Dr. W. W. STURGIS. There is a
picture of Ava STURGIS, taken in 1924 by Fried Studio,
510 Market St., Steubenville, Ohio; GARDEN SCHOOL grades 1-8,
taken in 1918; Old SHAW home in Glenshaw, Pennsylvania.
Some of the pictures mention towns: Hubbard, Ohio; Washington,
Pennsylvania; picture of MALVIUS SCHOOLHOUSE 1914-1915;
Hastings, Pennsylvania; and Barnesboro, Pennsylvania. There is
also a program from 1904 Annual Reunion of Erie Lodge No. 124
Knights of Pythias, 2267 1-2 Euclid Ave. Cleveland, Ohio. One
of the pictures of Dr. STURGIS has written on the back "a copy
of this picture hangs in a room in Allegheny Hospital, Uncle
Warren was the first intern in the old A.G.H. Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania." Some of the surnames on the pictures are GREELEY,
EMANUEL, COSGRAY, ROTHWELL, APPLEGATE, BRUER, DICKERSON. There
is also a picture of RIDGE SCHOOL 4th grade in Hubbard, Ohio.
I would like very much for someone who would appreciate them
to have these items."
(I am not related and do not have the pictures but saw them on the website and just thought someone might be family of the above mentioned people and want the pictures.)
i'm looking for information on a couple that lived in Mt. Pleasant Twnship, Jefferson Co Ohio some time between 1910 and possible into the 1950's or 60's. I only know the wife's name, Iona Katherine, born Iona Katherine Berry in Belmont Co Ohio. Iona was a great-aunt and I can't find anything on her. When her mother passed away in 1942, the Zanesville Times Recorder announced her travel plans, along with her sister's, to Dayton for the funeral. I'm trying to get back up that way to do some more research in the St. Clairsville and Steubenville area. Most of my family resided in Belmont Co from 1860 through the 1940's. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Brad Kuhn
Charleston AFB, SC

I would like to connect with any descendants of, or researchers with any info re: Benjamin MONTGOMERY b abt 1766, who married Nancy/Ann NOTTINGHAM in Frederick Co Virginia 1789.I have found info on 5 male and 4 female children from this marriage. My direct line comes through their son Jacob MONTGOMERY b abt 1793, probably in Virginia, m.1813 to Grace FERRELL.The family would migrate to Jefferson Co. Ohio by 1800, then Richland Co. Ohio by 1815, where Benjamin and Nancy would live out their lives.I am aware of marriages to these surnames by the children of Benjamin and Nancy. BURGETT,CALLON,CRABBS,CRUSEN/CRUSON,EICHARD,FARRELL,RAMSEY/RAMEY. I look forward to any kind response....Sherry in Texas

I am looking for information regarding the Good Samaritan Farm in Ross Twp of Jefferson County OH. It is located near Bergholz, Salineville and Hammondsville OH. In the 1930's and 40's there were great revivals and many cabins were set up for children's church camp. I have only spoken to a few people who attended sunday school here. I am looking for any information anyone has to give! The land was first owned by the Roach family from 1833-186?, then the Robbins & McCauland family until 1956.

Maybe with a "K" instead of a "C", or some other variation.
Please email me at cdetgen@aol.com in anyone can find them in a census for this area.
Warrenton Cemetery -- Restoration Needed, please help

Not to long ago I read in the on-line Steubenville Herald newspaper about the Warrenton Cemetery, in/near Rayland, Ohio. It was on a long list of cemeteries that needed restoration. Efforts were being made to try to find people to clean up the Warrenton Cemetery. Records of people buried and photos of graves in this cemetery are being added to Find-A-Grave. Please view the entries. More are being added daily.

Please look at the picture of the headstone for Abel Ashby, 1884-1913; and the other headstones. Mr. Ashby's grave is near a steep hillside. It is covered with vines! The oldest grave recorded in this cemetery is of Moses KIMBELL, 1747-1828. Spring is about to bring new growth, soon everthing will be covered. I hope the cemetery receives attention soon. The Jefferson County Historical Society would appreciate help with this project. Maybe the cemetery can be cleaned up for Decoration Day / Memorial Day with your help.

Some of the names in this cemetery are: Ashby, Bigger, Billingsley, Birch, Carpenter, Carr, Collins, Cusick, Hall, Jackson, King, Kimball, Kiss, Lewis, Litten, Peterlin, Risdon, Sixsmith, Wareham, Warnock, and Weiss.

It's been a while, so I thought I would submit a new message.

My ggrandparents were Patrick McLaughlin, b.1836, possibly County Cork or Roscommon, d. about 1901, place unknown, and Catherine Ruane (Rohane), b.1844, possibly County Cork or Roscommon, d.1906, Steubenville. They came to America around 1868 and settled in Steubenville.

They first went to England about 1865, where a daughter Ella was born.

They had four other daughters:
Catherine, b.1860, Ireland, d.1912, Toronto, Ohio, m. Edward Cadegan, b.1859, Nova Scotia, Canada, d.1928, Toronto. She was my grandmother.
Bridget, b.1861, Ireland, d.1928, Steubenville, m. John Ross Devlin, b.1857, d.1928.
Mary, b.1870, Steubenville.
Lillian Amelia, b.1878, Steubenville, d.1949, m. William Edward Fitzgerald, b.1873, Ravenna, Ohio, d.1957.

They also had three sons:
Thomas, b.1868, Steubenville, d. before 1906
James, b.1869, Steubenville, d. before 1906
M., b.1871, Steubenville

I would like to know if Patrick and Catherine actually came from County Cork or Roscommon, and who were their parents. When and where did they get married. Where did Patrick die. We have no record of his death. I would appreciate any available information. Noreen Rose

Looking for any information concerning these two individuals and their familes. They both appear in the 1810 census index for Jefferson Co, and John seems to have stayed there (1820 census), while George moved on to neighboring Harrison Co..

John, according to the 1820 census, would have been born between 1795-1776, probably closer to 1776. He may have came from PA, VA, or MD.

George, according to the 1830 Harrison Co. census, would have been born betweem 1770 and 1760.

Does anyone have any knowlegde of where they came from, were they actually brothers as I think, or what happened to John after the 1820 census, or George after 1830? Any names or dates of family members would be deeply appreciated; this is a long standing brick wall, and I'm not sure where to turn next...

I was hoping that someone could direct me to some good sources in Jefferson County, Ohio to find any records on the Ashby clan. They arrived in Jefferson in about 1811, but left little or no records. I have found some census records and two or three marriage records, but for being in the county, living, owning land, and dying for nearly 70 years, I am amazed at the lack of records left behind. If anyone can give me any advice on Jefferson County, OH records, it would be deeply appreciated. I have also seen Ashby spelled Ashly and Ashley. Thanks so much.

My Moore(s)were in Jefferson County around 1836, then settled in Meigs County by 1850s. Not listed in the 1840 Census.

I am wondering if these Moore(s)born in Ireland are related?
Andrew Moore b. 1795 m. Mary ?? from PA -- not to be funny, but was it a requirement to marry a Mary or wife from PA?

Christopher Moore b. 1785 m. Jane 1788 PA
James Moore b. 1777 m. Mary b. 1779 PA
James Moore b. 1812 m. Mary b. 1807/8 PA
John Moore b. 1806 m. Mary I b. 1816 PA
John Moore b. 1785 m. Mary b. 1796 PA
Robert Moore b. 1823 m. Elizabeth b. PA

Other Moore(s) I found in 1840 Jefferson County Census (Unfortunately, it only lists head of household & no other information)--my Andrew (white) was not listed:
Thomas, Christopher, William, Edward, Ezekiel --Wayne
Elizabeth, John -- Salem
Ezekiel, William, Hannah, Polly -- Stuben~
William, George -- Mt.

I believe that Sarah FOULKS/FULKS b:abt 1821 married Thomas A. SPEEDY. Also Jane FOULKS/FULKS b:abt 1828 married John SPEEDY. And Euphima FOULKS/FULKS b: 1831 married James M. MAXWELL. I believe all the FOULKS were daughters of David FULKS b:Virginia and Flora MACKEY.

Sarah and Thomas SPEEDY are listed in the 1880 Ohio census, Island Creek with 3 children and James, Thomas' brother. Jane SPEEDY is also listed as a widow with 2 children. James and Euphima MAXWELL are listed in the 1880 Ohio Census, Knox, with 4 children.

I am looking to connect these families and confirm that all the girls are daughters of Jacob FULKS. I have the FOULKS/FULKS family also in Trumbull Co., and Harrison, Co

thanks Elizabeth Foulks

I am looking for more information on Robert John Shaw. Here is the information I have from a genealogy family sheet I was sent. There were 3-children born in England. They came to the United States around 1841/1842 and settled in Smithfield, Jefferson Co., Ohio. There were 4-children born in the state of Ohio.
The children are:
Robert James Shaw b: 22 April 1837 in England
Mary Ann Shaw b: 22 Dec. 1838 in England
John Shaw b: 10 Oct. 1840 died as an infant
John W. Shaw Glennon, Lucilla M. Shaw Branch, Samuel C. Shaw.

I am looking for an obit for Sarah Jane Clark Gordinier. She married several times after Robert John Shaw died in 1853. She married a Robert T. Smith on 5 June 1857 in Ohio, 1-child born, Edward T. Smith b: 25 Oct 1877 in Holts Summit, Callaway Co., Missouri. M: Elizebeth F. Griffen. Sarah then married John Gordinier date unknown. Her will was sign with sur-name Gordinier.

I am also looking for the obituary of Robert John Shaw in the state of Ohio, sheet says he died in 1853.
Swickard's and Miller's in Island Creek Twp., Jefferson Co. Ohio

I am trying to trace the Isaac Miller family. I have hit a "brick wall" so I am tracing the spouses of Isaac Miller's children, specifically, Samuel Swickard, who married Elizanna (could be AKA Ellsenah, Elvina) Miller. Samuel Swickard died 26 March 1917 in Douglas Co. Oregon. I suspect he was born in Island Creek Twp., where the Isaac Miller family also lived:

1860 Census, Island Creek Twp:

Isaac Miller age 53 b. Pennsylvania
Matilda Miller age 47 b. Pennsylvania
Mary E. Miller age 20 b. Ohio
Sarah Miller age 18 b. Ohio
Lucinda Miller age 13 b. Ohio
Susan Miller age 10 b. Ohio
Elizanna Miller age 5 b. Ohio
Anderson Miller age 1 b. Ohio

Jacob Swickard age 49 b. Ohio
Mary Swickard age 44 b. Ohio
Elizabeth Swickard age 22 b. Ohio
Temperance Swickard age 20 b. Ohio
Nancy Swickard age 18 b. Ohio
Margaret Swickard age 15 b. Ohio
Virginia Swickard age 12 b. Ohio
Marietta Swickard age 10 b. Ohio
James A. Swickard age 7 b. Ohio
Samuel Swickard age 4 b. Ohio

I am guessing it is this Samuel Swickard that married Elizanna Miller. However by 1870 the Millers have moved to Harrison Co., Ohio (but the Swickard's are still in Island Creek Twp., Jefferson Co.). There are no other Swickard's in Harrison Co. in 1870.

My questions:
1. Do any of these names sound familiar?
2. Did this Samuel and Elizanna (Ellsenah, Elvina) get married?
3. Where did Samuel Swickard go after 1870?

Thanks,

Dave

My hubby's grandfather lived in the Steubenville area around 1922-1927. We know he was a coal miner all his life. Does anyone know of any mines in the area? It might help in my finding exactly what area they lived in. The only thing I know is they applied for a marriage license in Steubenville and my mother in law born there. There is no record of her birth and there is no record of their marriage except the certificate in probate court.
Thank you,
Pattie V.

I am looking for information about Birdie Lewis Dowden -- particularly death/burial information. The 1930 census lists her living in Knox Township, Jefferson County. She was living with the Leffler family as a housekeeper and was most likely indigent when she died. I'm fairly certain she died shortly after the 1930 census, but I can't find any information.

Hello,
I am working on a project for my Master's Degree documenting old schools in Ohio. My website is www.oldohioschools.com

This site is for the schools built after the one-room era. I am looking for pictures and information on any schools from the late 1800s through the mid 1900s.

The categories are :

Gone- Schools which have been razed

Abandoned- Schools which are closed and not used for any other purpose

Endangered- Schools which are closing soon or have recently closed and likely to become abandoned or razed

Retired- Schools which are not used as public classroom buildings but serve in some other capacity (apartments, offices, etc)

Functional- Schools still in use as classroom buildings

*** DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THE OLD GROVER SCHOOL IN TILTONSVILLE IS STILL STANDING OR NOT? WHAT YEAR WAS IT BUILT? WHAT YEAR WAS IT CLOSED? RAZED?

I would appreciate any updates to the information I already have posted, such as dates and locations, as well as any pictures or new information to post.

Is there someone here who would be willing to take tombstone photos of the following 3 graves, possibly 4 graves, and email them to me? The first 2 people are my uncle & aunt. The last 2 are their sons, my cousins. All are buried in Northern Cemetery, Smithfield, OH.

1. Russell Morton CYRUS, Sr.
died August 1981

2. Alma Ruth (GILMORE) CYRUS
died May 25, 1998

3. Russell Morton "Rusty" "Two-Feathers" CYRUS
died October 1998

All 3 graves are probably close to each other. There may be a 4th CYRUS grave of an infant named William CYRUS. If so, I'd like a photo of his tombstone too.

Please send photos to
TracingMyRoots@comcast.net

Thank you so very much for your help!
Sandy

can anyone out there help with some census records? I am looking for census records in Jefferson co., for 1830, 1840 and 1850, for any James Harrison, and Joshua Harrison, and Samuel Harrison, that might be listed. Trying to prove that a Samuel b. between 1823-1825 was brother to a William who may be a son of a James, but believe he is son of a Joshua Sr. Any census info would be helpful. Thanks.

Seeking burial location Jacob Allen 1839-1908 Mary K. Allen 1838-1909

I am searching for the burial location of the following couple.

Mary K. "Katie" Allen, maiden name Bauder, was born in Germany May 1838 and died in Columbus, Franklin County, OH on 7 Jun 1909. Her death certificate lists Stuebenville as the place of burial on 9 June 1909.

I found the death of a Jacob Allen on 26 January 1908, age 72, which fits the dates for her husband. My Jacob Allen was born in New Jersey.

The couple was living in Stuebenville in the 1900 census. Most of their married life, however, was spent in Delaware County, OH.

Does anyone have a transcription of cemeteries for Steubenville? A couple of books of transcriptions are at Digital Shoebox, but I couldn't find Jacob and Mary Allen.

Or, if someone can help me find an obituary for either of them in the local paper that might have a clue, that would be grealty appreciated.

Thanks,
Angela,
Michigan
