Searching for Grandmother, Helen Chapman of Oak Hill

My grandmother, Helen Chapman had my mother & aunt (identical twins) when she was about 31 years old in 1953, & immediately gave them to the Gertrude Ramey Children's Home in Ashland, Ky., where they stayed until the age of 19. She supposedly already had two other daughters; the oldest named Laura? (maybe) about 5 or 6 years old in late 1952, the younger daughter was 3 or 4. I possess this information from an anonymous letter I received in response to my plea to find my grandmother printed in the Herald Dispatch in 2001. The person also wrote that Helen lived with her mother & father (possible named Lawrence?) in a house on Buffalo Creek Road in Lawrence County, Ohio up until 1953, (the year the twins were born) when the house became empty. The person then says they "heard" Helen Chapman was working in or owned a small grocery store in Oak Hill, Ohio. They "heard talk to this effect as late as 1985."

Any information anyone may have would be so helpful. I am 34 years old now, with 3 children of my own, & only wish to fill in a gap of my family history that has been missing for sooo long. It is also my greatest wish to give any information to my mother & aunt for Mother's Day.

Thank you, & God Bless!
Hiram Sollars - 1821 - Jackson Co., OH - Elizabeth Graves
1843 March 07, Hiram Sollars married Elizabeth Graves in Jackson Co., OH
1850 Census: On August 27, 1850, Living in Richland, Vinton Co., OH
1860 Census: On June 15, 1860, Living in Essex, Stark Co., IL
------------------

Biographical history of Page County, Iowa :
---------
HIRAM SOLLARS, a well-known and respected resident of Washington Township, has been a citizen of Page County, Iowa, since 1872. He was born in Jackson County, Ohio, March 30, 1821, and is a son of Michael Sollars, a native of Virginia, of German origin. His mother was Hosanna Waldron, a native of Virginia, and a daughter of Philip Waldron, who was a soldier in the wars of the Revolution and 1812. Young Sollars was reared in the county in which he was born, and was trained to the occupation of a farmer. Arriving at the age of manhood, he was united in marriage, March 07, 1843, to Miss. Elizabeth Graves, a native of Jackson County, Ohio, and a daughter of James and Sarah (Murray) Graves, natives of the State of North Carolina.

Mr. Sollars lived in Ohio until 1852, when the spirit of enterprise was too strong to be repressed and he emigrated to Stark County, Illinois; he remained there until 1872, when, as before stated, he came to Page County, Iowa. He purchased a tract of wild land consisting of 120 acres, which he has since subdued and brought under cultivation; he has also made excellent improvements in the erection of buildings, and the planting of fruit and shade trees.

Mr. and Mrs. Sollars are the parents of eight children: Francis M. was a member the One Hundred and Twelfth Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and was mustered into the service in May, 1864; he died August 18, 1864, at Camp Butler, Illinois. David is a prominent farmer of Washington Township, a full sketch of whom will be found elsewhere in this volume: Emza is the wife of Thomas Denhurst of Missouri; Jane is the wife of T. Duckworth of Shenandoah, Iowa; Nancy Ann is the wife of Joseph Hamilton of Washington Township; Sarah Dollison; Mary, wife of I. Speakman; Austin, a resident of Washington Township, married Henrietta Greene.

Mr. Sollars is a Republician of the radical type, and is an advocate of the principles of Prohibition. He is an active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Blanchard. Although he has almost attained the "three score years and ten allotted to man," his age sits lightly upon him. He is firm in his convictions of right and wrong, and has attained an enviable position in the county.
----------------

John Henry Johnson Look-Up Please

Hi, I'm unable to get to Jackson County during the week to do a look-up, so I'm asking for help. I'm looking for the parents of John Henry Johnson. According to his death certificate and at least 1 of his children's death certificate, he was born in Jackson County. The John Johnson (probably his son) that gave the info on death certificate didn't know the names of John Henry's parents.

John Henry Johnson,
born: March 12, 1873, Jackson Co., Ohio
died: Aug. 16, 1954, New Straitsville, Coal Twp., Perry Co., Ohio, and he is buried in the New Straitsville Cemetery.

John married Ida May Sherman, about 1894, and since Ida was also born in Jackson Co., I would say they were married in in Jackson, Vinton or Meigs County. They lived in Perry Co. in 1900, in Guernsey Co. in 1910 and Ida died there in 1916. John moves back to Perry Co. by 1920 and lives the rest of his live there. He did remarry about 1922 to Eunice Mace/Vincent, she died in 1947.

Other surnames that I have found in the Jackson and Vinton area that maybe related to John are Gregory and Perry.

If someone could please check and see if they can find a birth certificate and see who his parents are I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, if you think you maybe related, please let me know.

Thank You, Diane honey_bee45@yahoo.com
I am trying to find the family of Walter E. Evans. He was living with his grandparents, John W. Nichols and Nancy Slack in 1910, Franklin Twp, Ross Co. Ohio. I have searched Ross County high and low, but cannot find him. I wonder if he is descended from one of the Jackson County Evans families. The Nichols family was originally from Jackson, and moved to Ross Co. If any one thinks they can help me, I would be most appreciative, and can supply info on the Nichols family in return. Thanks.

I am interested in Erastus Dimick found on the 1850 census in Milton Twp. He has a Mary Dimick living with him which could be a wife or a d.i.l. Also two young girls, Laura Ann and Emily. In 1860 Erastus no longer appears but there is a baby Radcliff living with Mary and Emily. I would appreciate any help finding a death record or cemetery listing for Erastus or anything about who Mary was. She is listed as postmaster for Dawkin's Mills in 1859. Thanks.

Samuel F. McClure (called "Frank") married Eliza Russell (usually called Lidda or Lidia) and their first son, Elmer, was born in Bloomfield twp., Jackson Co., on 13 June 1890. By 1900 Frank and Lidda had moved to Hocking Co Oh where they lived out their lives. Am interested in contact with descendants of any of the many children of Frank and Lidda McClure and would particularly like to learn what they know of eldest son, Elmer. Thanks.

Man born 3 June 1890 Jackson Co Oh

This is an odd query but I am trying to identify parentage for a man who claimed in his WWI draft registration that he was born 3 June 1890 in Jackson Co Oh. His name was William David NEWMAN, but it is said that Newman was not his real birth name. Presumably "William David" are his correct given names? His real surname might have been one of the "Mc" names such as McCain, etc. His mother is said to have been named Lydia. I am hoping some one might have access to the birth records for Jackson Co and be able to check any births recorded for 3 June 1890. Any help or suggestions appreciated.
Gary Young

Hello,
I am working on a project for my Master's Degree documenting old schools in Ohio. My website is www.oldohioschools.com

This site is for the schools built after the one-room era. I am looking for pictures and information on any schools from the late 1800s through the mid 1900s.

The categories are :

Gone- Schools which have been razed

Abandoned- Schools which are closed and not used for any other purpose

Endangered- Schools which are closing soon or have recently closed and likely to become abandoned or razed

Retired- Schools which are not used as public classroom buildings but serve in some other capacity (apartments, offices, etc)

Functional- Schools still in use as classroom buildings

I would appreciate any updates to the information I already have posted, such as dates and locations, as well as any pictures or new information to post. Please contact me at aaronturner@Neo.rr.com if you can help!

I have the marirage license for a cousin of mine who married a Leonard Thacker in Columbus. Leonard is listed as born in 1908, the son of Herman Thacker. I found Herman and Leonard Thacker on the 1910 Census in Milton, Jackson County, Ohio. I cannot identify on the marriage where he was born and was wondering if someone in Jackson might recognize it right off. It looks like Minorton to me. I believe Herman was in Vinton in 1900 and I can try there if need be. You can view the marriage license at this link.

http://geocities.com/williammichaelfamily/images/Thacker.jpg

Thanks for any help you can lend.

I'm looking for information on Sharp Barton (1770? to 1841), who lived in Jackson County and was possibly buried there. I suspect he was the father of my g-g-g-g-grandfather William Barton, who moved to Warrick County, Indiana. Sharp shows up in Jackson County in the 1820 Census. - Dan McNeely, Bloomington, Indiana

French Five Hundred

Hello: I am trying to connect the dots about family (lore) connection to the (Ohio) 'French Five Hundred'. Remember seeing a faded paperback book (Sibley, published circa 1933?) when I was a kid. The family heritage book that refers to 'FFH' is the "PETHOD" family. I am part of the ANTHONY line that traces its roots to OH circa 1825 (Levi Anthony). 'FFH' arrived circa 1790 in present-day Gallia County. My trail runs cold at 1825. Early Ohio tax records show David Anthony (1825: Jackson County) and William Anthony (1819: Brown County) and William Anthony (1806: Butler County). Any assistance would be appreciated.

Parents of Susan/Susanna Salts

I am having problems researching the parents of Susanna Salts, b. 1815 in Ohio. Supposed parents are William Salts (b. 1803 in Virginia) and Sarah UNKNOWN (b. 1793 in Virginia). She wed in 1837 in Jackson County, Ohio to husband, (I'm sure), Stewart or Steward Thompson (b. 1805 in Ohio). Their children were born in Ross County, Ohio. They then moved to Illinois between 1850 and 1853.

Problems:
You can see William probably was too young to father Susanna. Also, some family trees list Sarah as being William's sister. Possible, I suppose.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Steve Royce
trying to find out about this couple. John W. was born May 6, 1847 in Oceania Hills, Ohio. ( no longer a town ). He married Jennie L. Willis in 1874 and their children were : Charles G., Joseph W, Ray H, Jennie v, Walter B, Florence E, who married Lafayette Harry Ribble in Indiana Sept 08, 1906, and George F.

I believe he was the son of John and Sarah born in Virginia. However on Ancestry.com, in their marriage records, it is saying that his father was Samuel Stephenson and Jane Swope. I found a John Jr in 1850 Jackson county census with John and Sarah and at the bottom there was a 70 year old named Samuel who was also born in Virginia.

This would have been between 1910 and 1913, most likely 1911 (by the census information I have for 1910 and 1920). This would be Carrie's second marriage, and I need to know if she was divorced or widowed. Any information welcome.
Thanks!
Debbie McKenzie

I have in my possession a bible, Revised Standard Edition, Thomas Nelson & Sons, dated 1953. On the inside is handwritten: "Mrs T.C. or F.C. Andrews, 824 Oakland Blvd., Cambridge, Ohio, September '53."

There are many writings in the bible as if someone were taking notes during a sermon or bible study session. There are numerous articles pasted in it that apparently come from newspapers, but no dates. One column is written by a Dr. Crane. On the back of another article appears 209 NINTH STREET and the words United Presbyterian.

I found this bible in a little antique shop in McKinney, Texas, just northeast of Dallas and would like to get it back into family hands if possible.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

John Wolfe

HARTLEY, KIA Korean War, Jackson County

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Jackson County Ohio as his home of record.

Soldier: Charles Walyter Hartley
Born: July 23, 1921. Caucasian
Date of loss: Killed in Action April 23,1951. His remains were never recovered

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 158 families in Ohio that have not been located. There is one family from Jackson County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
Amos Webb and Leron Stone

I am looking for information on an Amos Webb, probably from Ohio (around the Jackson County area), but not sure. I recieved a Bible from my grandfather after he died that has written in it "Leroy Stone and Amos Webb Arrested by a bunch of crooks for nothing; August 6, 1913; Released Nov. 4, 1913; Found Not Guilty." The next page reads "L. R. Stone and A. Webb, Attorneys at Law" I live in Tennessee and have no way to get to Jackson, Co. to go through old court records. What I am mainly looking for is if anyone knows anything about these men and what they were arrested for.

Thanks,

Jeffery A. Burnsides
