Hi. I FINALLY located a death record for Elizabeth Balder Shaefer/Shaffer etc. It says she is interred in Salem Cemetery, it doesn't say where Salem Cemetery is but states her death place as Holmes County, Ohio, Walnut Creek twp.
Can anyone tell me where Salem Cemetery is?
Thank you very much.
Reichenbach, Wursten (Wersten), Miller

I have death certificates for Lydia Reichenbach Auld (b 1859, Winesburg, OH); Lena (Magdalena?)Mary Reichenbach Urmson (b 1861 Holmes Co) and Amelia Reichenbach Bard (b 1869 Winesburg, OH) to Mary Ann Wursten and Ulrich Reichenbach (both born in Switzerland). I cannot locate this family in the 1860 Census. Mary Wursten's parents are Laurence Wursten and (first name?) Miller. They also had a son name Franklin, born ~ 1856, I presume in Holmes County as well. Does anyone have information on this family in Holmes County, especially the 1860 census? Thank you much in advance. Kind Regards, llk

Holmes County Fowler's

Searching for the parent's of James Brewster Fowler and his brother Layman Dow Fowler. I found Layman age 18 living with an L D Fowler (possibly an older brother) in Salt Creek in 1850. James was living with an Enos King. I'm wondering if the parents died and the children were sent to live with other families. In the 1860 census James is married to Hannah Painter and they lived in Salt Creek with their children John L and Lorenzo Dow and a Gilbert Loveland and his sister. It appears the Fowlers had strong ties (marriages) to the Loveland and Painter families. Hannah lived with Elisha Loveland in 1850. I believe James and Layman had two or more sisters and two or three brothers. Their father was born in PA and possibly was named Thomas although I have not confirmed this and I know no more about the parents. I have followed James and Hannah and their descendants up to the present, but am desperate to find out who their parents and siblings were, where they died and were buried. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Pam Sweeney

Shire Family

Does anyone have any information on a Shire family in Holmes County? Or perhaps some tips on where to look for more information?

While researching my Shire family ancestry, I came across another Shire family that I suspect may be connected. Both because of the similar migration path as well as the family names that seem common between us. Birth dates seem close enough to possibly be direct family members of my ancestor.

I found the family of Jacob Shire in census records in Ripley, Holmes, Ohio. His family is living in that town from 1840 to 1860 on census records. I’m hoping that that is long enough in one area to leave some kind of footprint that can be tracked.

Here is what I uncovered through census records:

1850 – Ripley, Homes, Ohio
Jacob Shire – b: abt 1787 PA
Elizabeth – b: abt 1797 PA (Maiden name might be Lee? Many Lees living nearby. I also suspect that this might be a second marriage for Jacob)
Henry – b: abt 1830 PA
Sarah – b: abt 1832 PA
Jeremiah (?) – b: abt 1834 PA
Michael – b: abt 1837 PA
Angeline – b: abt 1839 PA
Martha (?) – b: abt 1832 PA (This may be Henry's wife)

Neighbor:
Jacob Shire – b: abt 1826 PA
Rachel – b: 1828 PA (I found some posted family trees that list her maiden name as Fippin or Fippins)

In the 1860 census of Ripley, Holmes, Ohio I found the above families with some additional names in each. Nearby I also found:

Henry Shire – b: abt 1830 OH
Martha – b: abt 1833 OH
Albert – b: abt 1852 OH
Setesia (?) – b: abt 1856 OH
Hannah – b: abt 1858 OH
Jeremiah – b: abt 1859 (listed as 6 months) OH

Samuel Shire – b: abt 1818 PA
Elizabeth – b: abt 1849 OH
Sarah F – b: abt 1852 OH
Eliza – b: abt 1854 OH
Martha – b: abt 1856 OH

I would be interested in obtaining any information that might indicate any familial relationships between these individuals. Especially helpful would be anything that might indicate the parents of Jacob Shire (b. abt 1787). If he is who I hope he is, his name may be John (Johannes) Shire of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

I truly appreciate any help at all you could provide. Thank you in advance for your help.

Dan Shire
dashire@comcast.net

Balder Family

Hello,
I am researching a Balder family that came from Bavaria, Germany in the areas of Rockenhausen &/or Bisterschied.
I have an Andrew Balder aged 57 in the 1860 Tuscarawas county census born in Germany about 1803. This is my ggg-grandfather. He was married to Mary E. Erhardt (var. spellings). Mary is not listed in the 1860 census so I believe she had passed on by this time. Living with this elder Andrew Balder is Catherine aged 16 born in Ohio & Andrew aged 21 born in Germany. Living next door is Philip Balder w/ wife Catharine (Dougherty) & a child Mary E. Schafer aged 10. Philip & the younger Andrew are brothers. Other known siblings is Margaret Balder (my gg-grandmother}, & John Balder who married Lucinda Bentz.
1900 census has the year they came to this country:
John Balder came to the U.S in 1852
Phillip & Margaret came in 1853
Andrew came in 1855
So they wouldn't be in the 1850 census maybe the elder Andrew would. They are also found living in Coshocton county as well as Holmes & Tuscarwaras counties. Would love to have any information on this Balder family.
Thank you.
Holmes County Burial Lookup Request: Fett

Would someone with access to the Holmes County Burial Record book kindly check to see if there is an entry for an Elizabeth Fett who died 1862-1870 in Holmes County?

Elizabeth was my great-great-grandmother. Her youngest child was born in 1862 and my great-great-grandfather remarried in October 1870 before moving the family west to Iowa. I don't have a birth year for Elizabeth, but I'm guessing approximately 1816-1820.

If there is a tombstone I would expect it to be inscribed Fett, but just in case the book uses other sources some common mispellings of their surname in census and other records are: Felt, Fatt, and Fatte.

Thank you!

Kittie Mayers, aged 17, the beautiful and much courted girl of wealthy parents in Lakeville, Holmes County, died Sunday from the effects of an abortion performed by Fred Ogden, a young man of good family of the same place. Shortly after her death Ogden was arrested, but escaped while the officer in charge was tying his horse and has not yet been found. The coroner's inquest elicited some very distressing details.

source: RICHLAND SHIELD & BANNER (Mansfield, Richland, Ohio): 29 January 1887, Vol. LXIX, No. 27

She had 3 children; Samuel G. 1888, Justine "Dottie" 1891, and Sue b. 1893. Justine "Dottie" married Joseph H. REIHELD and Sue married Walter STRAITS. Census data indicates Justine was probably related to family names: FREY, BURKEY/BERKEY, BLANCHAT/BLANCHARD. Believe she died in Holmes Co, 14 Mar 1919. Are there any cemetery records available that place her buried near family?
Many thanks for any help/suggestions! Steve

GILSON and Margaret Etella SPECK) married Delpha Marcella SHANK around 1897 and had one child, Clifford Sherman GILSON. I think I found Delpha in the 1910 census, married to a John SHANK, but there is no sign of Clifford. In the 1920 census, he appears to be called Clifford SHANK. In 1930, Delpha is married to C.S. GILSON, and Clifford is noted as HIS son.

1) What is Delpha's maiden name?
2) Where is Clifford in 1910?
3) Who is C.S. Gilson, and his parents?
Kriegers in German Twp. 1850 and before

I am looking for help/advise on where I might go in Holmes County to find information on John Krieger, b. 1792, listed in German Township in 1850 census. One internet tree I have seen lists his wife as Leah Loyer but there is no wife listed in the 1850 census for John. The family were of the German Reform faith (later Evengelical & Reformed Church, still later, United Church of Christ). Any suggestions on possible cemetery or source of death records before 1850? John had at least the following children: Sally(Sarah), Michael, Denah, Lydia and John J. Sally and Denah married Hargers; Michael married Magdalena Dietz. John, Michael and possibly Sally & Denah moved to Fulton County, Ohio, along with other Dietz and Kline families sometime between 1850 and 1860. The father John is burried in Dutch Ridge Cemetery in Fulton County along with Michael & Magdalena and MANY of their descendants.

My husband has an event at the College of Wooster June 1st and I have talked him into going up a day early so I may do research in Holmes County. Thank you all for any tips you might have.

Mary Beidler...All above buried in Stark Cnty. Who is George's and Mary's parents and does anyone have any more info on this family? Searched all the VA Sager trees that I could find, to no avail. May have Iowa connections. Family lore has it that 5 Sager brothers came from Germany to VA and had a falling-out that resulted in some name spelling changes and they scattered to various places including OH.
Hi, on July 4th 1954 4 men from Killbuck Ohio were on a fishing trip to Eagle lake in Ontario Canada. On Julky 4th they were fishing a small lake off of Eagle lakeand after their day of fishing left a message written on the label from a Crisco shortening can listing their catch, asking anyone who found the note to add their fish to the list and left the can on a small island on the lake. They also left their names....Paul R. Miller, Richard Roach, George Ewert, Joe Doyle all of Killbuck Ohio. My friend and I who found their note 54 years later would like them or their relatives to know about the note and how we came about finding it. please email me at glen.iwanoczko@mts.net We have a summer cottage on Eagle lake and fish this secret little lake ourselves.

cemetery record lookup: Orner

Is there a county-wide listing of burials for Holmes County? If so, I am hoping that someone can do a lookup for me. I am looking for Elizabeth Orner. She lived with her husband, Felix Orner, in Ripley, Holmes County, Ohio, from at least 1860 through 1900. Then, in the 1910 census, Felix Orner is enumerated as a widow. So Elizabeth Orner died between 1900 and 1910 and is probably buried near Ripley. She was born about 1824. Any assistance appreciated.

Hugh Williams
New Jersey
Hello List,

I have come into recent information that may prove the parentage of my great great grandfather Boyd A. Patterson. He was presumably the son of Thomas Patterson and Elizabeth McDowell Durbin or Durben. Elizabeth was married to Elisha Durbin/Durben. I was told by another Patterson researcher that he felt Boyd's mother was Elizabeth Durben but did not know if Durben was her married or maiden name. In the IGI files is Elisha Durben married to Elizabeth McDowell, 26 Jun 1828. Boyd lived only 2 doors away from the Durben family in 1850 in Killbuck, Holmes Co. census record. Boyd was 24 yrs old and married within the year to Margaret Conrad age 23. Boyd's occupation was listed as a shoemaker. Elisha Durben's occupation was listed as a constable in 1850, in 1860 he was a shoemaker also. Thomas Patterson's will gave Boyd the sum of $1.00 leading me to believe in this manner he was giving credence to the fact he was the child's (Boyd) father, but not of his lawful family with Mary Patterson.
Boyd's youngest child, Enos Patterson, was my great-grandfather. Enos was my grandmother's father. Her name was Lucy Arvada Patterson Owen Spahr.
If anyone can help with this mystery, I would love to hear from you.

Sincerely,
Karen Shear

They are believed to have been some sort of cousins.

Geography of Holmes County

Can someone help me with a little geography of Holmes County. I am looking at a family (Andrew Sparlin) which the 1830 Census carried as lone of about 46 families living in Knox (Township), Holmes County. I have a map that shows Knox Township in east-central Holmes County. In 1830 was there an actual town called Knox or would the Knox refer to anywhere within the Knox Township? If the census refers to "anywhere within the Knox Township", anyone know a way to narrow it down further. The reason I ask: I believe Andrew Sparlin married Elizabeth Spurgeon, dau of Rebecca Spurgeon who resided with her family in Jefferson Township, Knox County. I'm just trying to visualize the relative placement of Knox Township, Holmes County with Jefferson Township, Knox County.
Can anyone help?

Jerre

Children of John and Elizabeth (Fry) Heffelfinger of Millersburg

John and Elizabeth moved to Millersburg in 1896 from the Walhonding area, bringing with them four children: Cora D (married William E Schott and returned to Coshocton County); Minnie C (b Feb 1876); Anna M (married Hervey W Kitzmiller and moved to Washington, DC); and Frederick William (or William Frederick), b 29 Aug 1878. I have found one (undocumented) source that claims Millie married Jonah D Dietz (Deetz?) of Holmes Co, but he is single and living with his sister in 1910, and Millie is nowhere to be found in any census after 1900, when she is living with her widowed mother in Millersburg. William (or Franklin) also disappears after 1900, although I believe he never married and died in Millersburg 26 Jun 1924.

If anyone has access to Holmes County marriage information between 1900-1910, can you check for marriage of Millie C Heffelfinger?

I have 2 sides of my family that had connections with Holmes County, Ohio. I have limited information as to their lives when they lived there. Both families entered the US through Philadelphia in the early to mid-1800's and lived in PA for a brief time before moving to Ohio and eventually to Brashear, Missouri around 1870. Ironically, they lived in the same area, however, the families were not united until the marriage of my parents in 1947. The Platz family also had a connection with the Mitten family. The Crossgrove family was connected to a family by the name of Spangler. I know that some of these family members are buried in Holmes County. I would certainly appreciate any information that I can find in regards to these families.

Samuel Christopher in Millersburg, Ohio area

Looking for help. Samuel (2) Christopher (obituary states b. 17 Mar 1831 in Millersburg but could be in range of 1827-1834) lists parents on second marriage license as Samuel (1) Christopher and Catherine Tracy. Samuel (2) moved to Indiana, then Nebraska (where I am located). I visited the Holmes County Courthouse, but only managed to check births, deaths and marriages in the two hours I was there. Unfortunately, birth records only go back to around 1860. I did find a Sam Christopher in death records, d. 7 Jan 1877 in Hardy Twp, aged 78 years but could not find any will info. This would make him the right age for Samuel (1). I also found a Samuel who married Nancy Hamilton on 5 Sept 1844, which could possibly be Samuel (1)'s second wife. Are there any other resources available in Holmes County that could help me learn more about my Samuel (2) and his parents? It may be possible that they came from Fayette County, Pennsylvania with other family members. Samuel (2) lists his fathers pob as PA in the census. Any help or insight is appreciated. I am also posting this on the Christopher Board.

Dear all,
Does anyone on this list by chance have access to the Will Index and/or Deed Index for Holmes County, Ohio? If yes, I would be forever grateful if someone could please look up a few of my Hamman/Hammon/Hammond ancestors who lived in that county in the 1810 to 1880 range. Thanks much in advance for any response.
Brian Hamman

Frederick Knadel - Civil War Letter

I am writing today with something of an odd inquiry. I was in Fredericksburg, VA in the early part of this month and happened to visit a military antiquities dealer. A colleague and I were looking through his glass cases when we came across a Civil War era letter written in German. We were very excited in that we had a hope that it might be a person of the 11th Corps and maybe, just maybe, a member of our ancestors’ regiment the 74th PA – for which I am the webmaster. http://www.olypen.com/tinkers/74th%20Pennsylvania/Webpage/de...

Well, after much hemming and hawing…walking about Fredericksburg…I decided to go back and purchase it. We took it to his home and then we attempted to translate it. We made some progress – it appears to be a letter explaining why F Knadel (The guy doesn’t cross a lot of letters we realized – or the ink didn’t take from his pen) enlisted – or at least telling someone in Winesburg (Weinsberg) that he had enlisted and that he was being well fed. We found a Frederick Knadel enlisting as a member of the 3rd Ind. Co. of Ohio Cavalry via the CW Soldiers and Sailors Index. I suspect that this might be our man so to speak.

I have taken some digital pictures of the letter that I can pass on as small thumbnails. I also can send much better images if there is any interest in figuring out if this man is a former member of the Winesburg community. It happens, that I am coming through Winesburg this July on the way to a meeting in Columbus from where I have other stops prior. If there is an interest, I can ensure that we have a series of copies made to drop off with those interested.

Best wishes, and I hope to hear from someone interested in this man's story soon.
Sorting out my Snyder Family

I have numerous Snyder names which I am trying to find relationships. My ggrandmother Pauline(Polly or perhaps Mary Pauline) married to Samuel Smith (Schmidt). Polly's siblings were George, Catherine, Jacob, Michael, Samuel S, Lucy, Daniel and Sophia. Their parents were Samuel Snyder b abt 1810 in PA and Sarah b abt 1815. Ohio. Catherine m Henry Holderbaum and Lucy m Isaac Hummel. Daniel and Sophia never married. Daniel's farm located just north of New Bedford - Crawford twp, Coshocton Co passed to Sophia and then to my grandmother Lucinda Smith (Schmidt) Barrick. Are any of these names familiar to anyone searching the Snyders? Also Benjamin M. Snyder b abt 1844 is related but I'm not sure of the connection. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks
Marlene
