I know she is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery and that her funeral was held on Nov 20th 1984, so she died I assume a few days before that. I was told she lived close to Heinlein Funeral Home in Logan so I would assume she may have been there for any viewing or funeral.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Trying a different board here-am searching for info on the ancestors and even decendants of the following family. Ancestor info would be particularly helpful as I have only a suggested guess at this point.

Benjamin O'Harra/O'Harra (any spelling variation will do), b. 1879 possibly in Hocking co, but could have been born in Franklin, Licking, or a surrounding county, OH. He died 1921 in Benton, Hocking, OH. I have Thomas O'Harra (1840-1914) and Nancy Snyder as his parents, but I am not sure. There is a possibility his grandparents are Thomas O'Harra and Lucinda Legg (1805-1864) are his grandparents, but I am not certain of that either. I was wondering what research others have done. My own has basically been obtained through census records.

Ben married Laura I Huffman (1883-unknown). Laura's parents were George Washington Huffman and Nancy Minerva Tatman. I know of 7 children Ben and Laura had-Leota Belle (1904-1995), m Carl Knepper, George T (1907-unknown), m Bertha McKnight, John Henry (1909-1996), m Thelma Speakman, Donald C (1912-1982), m Nettie Mettler, Pearl/Purl Nicholas (my grandfather, 1915-1992), m Margaret Marie Bradford (1918-1992), Roy C (1918-unknown), m Jennie Doering, and Catherine M(1921-unknown), m Bernard McDowell.

All the children were born in Benton, Hocking, OH as far as I know save George T (b Columbus, Franklin).

Laura did outlive Benjamin and was alive in 1930. She had not remarried by then.

Laura's mother's family, the Tatmans also lived in the Hocking, OH area, and I wouldn't mind hearing about them.

I am trying to find death info on a man by the name of Nikolai Sinelnikow who died in a long term care facility in Hocking Co., OH on 5-26-1992. It is my understanding that he was born in Russia, worked for the US government and was then admitted to the US Army. He was a cook with the Army in Germany. As far as I know he had no known family with which he was in contact. Ohio death index says he died in a long term care facility. I am trying to find if he maybe died in a VA hospital and is buried in a nearby National Cemetery. Can anyone tell me if these is a VA facility in Hocking Co? Any idea how I can find where he is buried? Or, if there was any kind of an obit published for him?
Thanks.

I have one more question. Who was Starr township named after? I know there are Starr burials in the Asbury cemetery, and would like to know more about the Starr family that may have been responsible for the name of the township where my Nichols ancestors lived. Thank you.

Obituary of John E. ILES [1851OH-1922IN]

THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, December 21, 1922, Volume XLVII, Number 6, Page 4, Columns 3 & 4, ‘DEATH’S HARVEST. ILES.’ [Transcribed on February 27, 2008 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]

John E. ILES was born near Logan, Hocking County, Ohio, February 8, 1851, and entered into rest December 13, 1922, at his home in Lyons, Indiana.

His parents, Jacob and Minerva (MCBROOM) ILES, reared to maturity eight sons and four daughters. John was the second son, and is survived by three sisters and four brothers-five of whom now live in as many distant states.

When he was ten years old the family migrated from Ohio and settled near Fairmont, Vermillion County, Illinois, where John grew to manhood on his father’s farm, there learning thoroughly the chief occupation of his life.

After making a trip to Kansas in an emigrant wagon and spending a winter in Iowa, he prepared himself for teaching. He attended the Illinois Normal University at Normal, Illinois and Southern Illinois Normal University at Carbondale. At the latter place he was one of the founders of the still existing Zetetic Literary Society, and took part in the athletics of those days-boxing and baseball-but above all else, he was a diligent and successful student. He taught his first school in 1876, and combined teaching and farming until 1891, except for not quite five years he spent in Dakota. He always retained a genuine interest in education, and gave all his children exceptional educational advantages.

On March 19, 1878, he was united in marriage with Mary J. THOMPSON, the daughter of a neighboring farmer, and a native of Kentucky. She, with the five children of this fortunate union, survives him. They began their married life on a rented farm near Fairmont, Illinois, and in 1883 located on a claim near Esmond, Dakota Territory (now South Dakota). The returned in 1888 and purchased a farm near Sidel, Illinois, where they lived until 1893, when the moved to Dudley, Illinois. Ten years later they came to Lyons, where Mr. ILES continued to engage actively in farming until his robust health suddenly failed.

He did not devote his entire energy to teaching and farming. A Republican in politics, he locally supported the man judged to be the best candidate. He held but on public office, and it came to him unsought.

His chief service to his community was in connection with the church. For him religion was not a thing apart. Belief and practice were inseparable. Like his father and grandfather for whom he was named, he was rigidly hones that truthful, and had a hatred for all sham and pretense. In 1877 he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and for many years was active in religious work, serving as Sunday school teacher or superintendent and prayer meeting leader. He was on the building committee for two churches, and contributed to the erection of a number of others. In his home he followed the practice of his father-worshiping daily at the family alter, and his faith became the faith of his children.

The failure of his health lessened his business and religious activities and kept him from public gatherings, but his later years held many joys.

His keep humor never deserted him, and with his faithful companion he quietly enjoyed the ample fruits of remarkable industry and good judgment. ON especially pleasant even was an extended visit to his boyhood home in Ohio in 1919.

He followed with deep pride and unbounded love the careers of his two sons and three daughters, who held him in equal esteem and affection, and for many years never failed to gather at the parental home once a year, and more recently twice a year.

His business cares were assumed by his second son, and he seemed to have awaiting him many pleasant years of companionship with his wife and his children and his four grandsons, but on October 6 he received the slight injury which resulted in his death from blood poisoning after weeks of intense suffering.
-
Frank GALLAGHER & Kitty MONTGOMERY

I have a Kitty Montgomery who married Frank William Gallagher in Logan, Ohio on Dec 30, 1879. They had 7 children (I can supply names if needed). Kitty has me stymied. She first appears on the 1870 Census with her father whose first name, I believe, is Frederick (although the handwriting looks like Fred or Ted) and he is listed as an editor. He does not seem to appear again after 1870 except possibly in New York in 1920 but that is questionable. Kitty shows on the census reports from 1870 through 1930 but each time with a different place of birth: 1870/Louisiana 1880/Louisiana 1900/Mississippi 1910/Maryland 1920/Alabama 1930/Mississippi. I have no information on her mother and assume she had no siblings. She spent her entire adult life in Logan, Ohio. Can anyone out there help me?

They had Oliver, Lorenzo D., Orin P., and Christopher and three daughters I do not have names for, all born before 1850. Oliver married Susannah BARROWS (etc.) in 1839 in Hocking Co. They mainly lived in Union Furnace, Starr Twp. If you have any early Collins from this area, we probably connect as Oliver had a very large family. Also would like to find parents of Susannah. Consent on her marriage record said Alfred Barrows, but I do not know if her father, brother, uncle or other family member.

Warren Family

Hello,

My dad, Edward Harkless, Jr., was born in HOCKING/ATHENS/VINTON counties area in 1914. I am looking for the burial place and birth/death dates of his gr-grandfather, BENJAMIN WARREN bc. 1835 - 1842 d. before 1890 married LAVINA SKIVERS (d/o WILLIAM SKIVERS & HESTER ____?) bc. 1837/38 Hocking Co, OH d.. after 1890 in Athens Co, OH. Lavina Skivers became LAVINA RUSSELL after her husband, Benjamin Warren died. I have never been able to find out who the RUSSELL was that she married second. Any ideas? BENJAMIN WARREN was a Civil War solider, part of the 187th OH Infantry, Co. D in Feb. 1865-Jan. 1866. He also may have been part of the 21st OH Infantry Apr., 1861 to Aug., 1861. I have never been able to locate Benjamin Warren in any census record of the area counties, so I don't know when he came to this area. ANY IDEAS AS TO HIS PARENTS? I have looked for his gravestone, with no avail. I have recently read of a Benjamin Warren born 1841 d.?? who is buried at the ZION CEMETERY, STARR TWP, HOCKING CO, OH, OH who was in the Civil War, 21st Infantry. Does anyone know the BIRTH DATE OF THE BENJAMIN WARREN THAT IS BURIED THERE? I believe that my gr-grandfather Phillip Harkless is also buried in a cemetery in Starr Twp. ANY THOUGHTS/IDEAS?
Thanks!
Eilene Harkless Moore

Hello
I am trying to find the graves of James Reid and his wife Matilda Cave Coonrod Reid.

The Hocking Co. deaths records show a James Reid who died 1896 Bk 3, pg 161. and a Matilda Reid who died 1884 Bk 2 pg 5. ???

The best information that I have right now is the 1880 census that shows that they were both alive in 1880 and they were living in Laurel Twp. A section in the Hocking Co. History list their address as being in the Rock House Post area.

Thanks for your help, and God Bless.
Rufus

I was recently informed by a distant relative that my great grandfather was an important figure with the United Brethren Church. David Henry Kern, I know, lived his last several decades in Starr Township & passed away during the late 1920's.

It appears that the closest United Brethren Church today is located in Logan. Does anyone know whether there was another in Starr back in those days?
I thought I had more records on my great grandmother’s family other than the 1900 census and one birth certificate, but I guess I was wrong.

She and my great grandfather, Robert Lafayette Stewart, had some outs and she left him when my grandmother was about 3 years old. He destroyed anything to do with her, so all these years we’ve had zilch. I’m hoping to find some decendants…

George W. Brown was born in Ohio (tradition says Hocking county, birth record says Mansfield) February 1871. Both parents were born in Ohio. He was a barber.

Josephine Krauser (or Kauser sometimes) was born in Washington DC February of 1872. Her father was German, her mother was from Virginia.

They married in/around 1894. Josephine had four children, only three lived. They are:

Gertrude (my great grandmother, whom we have NO photos of) born in November of 1895/6 in DC.

Myrtle (or Mertle) born March 1897 in DC

Wanetta born March of 1900 in DC

This info is from the 1900 census when they lived at 41 Myrtle Street in DC. I’m attaching Gertrude’s birth certificate, if it helps jog anyone's memory. Please contact me if you know of them.

http://family-ology.blogspot.com

KLINGER, Researching any relations of John Henry KLINGER who arrived in Hocking Co. around 1812. He was born in 1778 in Fredricksburg, in what is now Lebonon Co., Penn.(was Berks and Lancaster Co.). He was the son of Carl (Charles) Klinger, also born in Fredricksburg,Penn. in 1753. John Henry KLINGER died in 1849 and was buried in Falls township, Hocking Co. Ohio. John Henry had three sons, John, Henry and Joseph. John and Henry`s descendants still live in the Hocking Co. area. Joseph and his family moved to Van Wert Co., Ohio in 1853, and his descendants are still in that area and in surrounding counties.
Hocking Civil War Descendants

Would you please forward this to anyone you feel may help us in our search for descendants.

My name is Patrick Taylor and I live in Eaton, OH. I am writing concerning the 75th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. I do a first person living history presentation of Andrew L. Harris, Colonel of the 75th, who was promoted to that rank at the death of Colonel Riley of Wyoming, Ohio at Chancellorsville.

In fact at Gettysburg, when general Ames was promoted to Division commander, Harris commanded the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division of the 11th Corps and held the "high ground" on Cemetery Hill. Harris and the 75th were the first to enter Gettysburg after the battle on July 4th and in fact, were engaged by the enemy that day, so for the 75th, the Battle of Gettysburg lasted four days.

General Harris was also the 44th Governor of Ohio serving from 1906 -1910, exactly 100 years ago. He was the last Civil War general to serve as Governor of any state.

I am a member of the Ohio valley Civil War Association and myself and a group of 75th OVI reenactors who are in Florida, where the 75th saw action during 1864 and 1865 are very interested in the descendants of the 75th. .

I have in my possession an exact duplicate of the flag given the 75th in 1865 by friends in Preble County as recorded by the Ohio Historical Society.

I mention all of this for two reasons. The 75th OVI www.75thovi.com was formed from eleven Ohio counties including Hocking. That means that the 75th has deep rooted history in Hocking County. There are likely many decedents of the soldiers of the 75th living still in and around Hocking County.

Secondly, the 75th OVI from Florida for all regiments in the "Ames Brigade" (http://web65.rollins.edu/~rpfluger/), which would be the 25th, 75th and 107th OVI and the 17th Connecticut, are hosting a 145 anniversary celebration at Gettysburg next year www.gettysburgreenactment.com/event . They are trying to locate as many descendants of the Brigade as they can. I am hoping you and other local historical societies might be able to help. I will add Tom's e-mail info about the event below. My contact info is Patrick Taylor (e-mail ovcwa75thovi@yahoo.com) .120 East Main Street Eaton, OH 45320, 937-456-5193 Office 937-533-0897 Cell. Hope to hear from someone within your organization soon.

Pat

Correspondence to decedents:

Dear 75th Ohio Soldier Descendant,

I am writing to you today to let you know of our plans for the 145th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Next year’s event will be held on July 4, 5, 6, and 2008. The website for the reenactment is:

www.gettysburgreenactment.com/event/145th.htm. It does not contain much detailed info because this year's event has not yet arrived. This site will be frequently updated once the 144th has ended.

We, as Civil War reenactors, see any Gettysburg reenactment as a "big deal". We treat every 5th year as our National Event to attend. In 2003 we had a memorable event in Gettysburg when we had wreath-laying ceremonies at each of the 75th's monuments in the park as well as participating in many of the reenactment's battles throughout the weekend. The rains of the summer of 2003 forced the event coordinators to move the date from July to August and as a result, many of us from Florida were unable to attend. We can only hope for the best next year.

What we reenactors have planned is very much similar to what we did in 2003. We will lay wreaths at each of the monuments as well as read the "Roll of Honor" at each place. Reenactors from the 25th, 75th, 107th Ohio & the 17th Connecticut will participate throughout the day. This is planned for Thursday, July 3rd.

From the 4th to the 6th, we will participate in the reenactment battles.

For the 145th, we would like to invite you to be part of our Memorial Celebrations. We are hoping to organize an Ames' Brigade Reunion for the evening of Thursday, July 3rd 2008 in Gettysburg. The place is still being worked out. Our dream is to have a banquet dinner in one of the local establishments that evening. I have been in touch with several places and as it is way too early to make any definite plans, we are able to entertain suggestions and recommendations from anyone who wishes to help out.

On the 145th anniversary, we'd like to honor you and the memory your family who served in the 75th Ohio during the Civil War. If you ancestor was not at the Battle of Gettysburg, we would still love for you to join us. Although this event remembers those who served at the battle, we wish to remember all of the soldiers of the 75th with this very special event.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Please accept this message today as an informal invitation. Once we have finalized all parts of this event, we will be sending something out which will be more detailed.

Also, please accept my apologies if I am not more direct in my contacting you today. I have been trying to update all of my historical files and in the process have come across some e-mails that are no longer active.

I respectfully ask you to please respond to this with your name, mailing address and the name, rank, company of your ancestor who served in the 75th. (If I'm contacting you today, I do have this info. Please re-send this info so I can be sure to update all of my files and lists. THANKS!)

_____________________________________________________________________________________Thank you very much for your time and patience. I look forward to hearing from you real soon.

Yours,

"For Union & the Constitution"

Tom Criscuolo (e-mail buckeye75th@aol.com) Captain/Historian/Asst.
Marriage Verification

I was wondering if there is anyone out there that can maybe verify if a marriage took place. I am only going by information that is written on head stones of children and the fact that these two people appear to live on neighboring farms in the 1880 Census for Vinton Cty. I am thinking they may have gotten married in Logan or Hocking County since they lived very near the border of Vinton and Hocking Counties. They are David F. Bishop (1864-1904) and Carrie W. Newton (1869-1935). From the ages of the children and the 1880 Census I am thinking they would have married between 1885 and 1895. If there is anyone out there that may be able to shed some light on this I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance, Rob Schrader

According to the 1840, Saltlick twp., Perry Co. census, he was born 1810-1820. He may have been born in W VA, OH, or PA. According to original Perry Co. records, he married Meleca Allen on 2 Nov. 1837. Eli may have died in March of 1845, but we don't know where. After Eli's death, his widow Emma (aka Meleca, Amelia, Emelia, Emily, Millie) Allen married Ruben Spurgeon in Hocking Co.

It has been
sometime, since I have been there, but I believe the cemetery is on the
road from Logan to Carbon Hill. I believe it is along either Ohio
routes 575 or 278. The cemetery is old and very small, and next to a
small white frame church. There are some of my mother's STACY family
members there. Maybe someday soon I'll get over there and write down
all the grave info to post on your site.

Just thought I would pass this along for your consideration.

Tom Turner
Hurricane, WV

Josephine (Catherine Josephine Hinton) married Samuel B. Westenhaver in Delaware County, Ohio in 1857. They lived in Hocking County, Ohio though from what year I am not certain as they are not shown in the 1860 census.

Josephine and her three deughters - Mary G., Corrine or Corene and Jennie Eloise all died in Hocking County (as far as I can discover) between 3 August 1864 and 4 September 1864.

Can anyone help with a cemetery where they may be buried?
And was there an epidemic at that time which would account for all of their deaths within about a month?

Thank you so very much.

Margie Hinton in California

Ohio Gravestone Photo Project-Hocking County

Greetings Hocking County Researchers,
I invite you to check out the Ohio Gravestone Photo Project and participate in its growth as it will only grow with everyone's involvement.

The GPP, as its called, is a wonderful tool to preserve the headstones of our ancestors. With the advent of time and weather and vandalism, our headstones are disappearing at an alarming rate. We need to work on preserving a digital image of our family stones as a fitting tribute to our ancestors. The GPP is an easy-to-use site that exists to make this preservation possible. Additionally there is no cost to the contributor, hard to find in this day and age where everything costs something.

Particularly valuable are those very old headstone photos that you have in grandmas photo album. Scan them into your computer and add them to the GPP as they may be the only testament to your ancestors life. Share them with the world.

The link for the Hocking County GPP is: http://ohiogravestones.org/cemeteries.php?selected_cid=37
The link to the Ohio GPP is:
http://ohiogravestones.org/

I am your Hocking Co. coordinator and I am truly excited about being involved. The Iowa GPP was the first such project (I received my experience there) and recently passed over 250K photos in that project. I think Ohio can pass them up and I look forward to us Ohio researchers making great strides across the entire OH GPP. Nothing like a little friendly competition! LOL

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me or respond to this message.
Thank you very much!
Karen D-J
Hocking Co. GPP

Hocking Co. research advice

I am working on my family tree and have a branch that traces back to Logan, Hocking Co., OH. Perhaps someone reading this could give me some advice. I live in Illinois, so cannot search in person.

I am looking for death records for some of my ancestors. These deaths would be prior to the time Ohio began recording deaths on a state-wide basis. Is there a listing of Hocking Co. deaths? If I knew there definitely are death records, then I would write to the court house . .but I hate to bother them if the records do not exisit.

The ancestors I am interested in at this point are:

Harriet Embich Rochester, d. 19 Mar 1890
Joseph Watson Rochester, d. 2 May 1896
Jacob Embich, d. 4 Jul 1876
Margaret Ohlwein Embich, d. 25 Aug 1865

Also, have Hocking Co. obituaries been transcribed?

Finally, have cemeteries been transcribed? About 35 or 40 years ago, my mother took me to Logan. We found the graves of some of our ancestors in a cemetery (or maybe two cemeteries) in Logan. I have a vague memory of the visit. I have a couple old black & white photos of one of the graves (John Rochester & his 2 wives) but, for some reason, I don't have photos of any of the others that I recall we visited. I am pretty sure we saw tombstones for the 4 ancestors I've mentioned above, and I think maybe Jacob Embich's mother as well. It's hard to remember. (Since I don't know the name of the cemetery, it makes it even more difficult.)

Anyway, thank you for any advice.
Then I got to thinking and thought I'd better find out if I need permission to hang the sign. Is there anyone out there that knows first if I need to get permission and if I do who would I contact? I was hoping to hang the sign this week as I am on vacation. I look forward to hearing from anyone on the subject. Thanks in advance, Rob
