Looking for burial or information on Richard and Elspa Murray & daughter Catherine (Murray) Cottrell who lived in New Market 1860-1880.
I received a copy of the pension record their daughter Catherine (Murray) Cottrell applied for her children due to the death of her husband John M. Cottrell, 17th OVI at Reseca , Georgia on May 14, 1964. She lived next to her Father and his family in 1870 Census.
Richard Murray and her sister Susan testified in her behalf.
It appears that Susann and other daughters of Richard never married and lived with them through older age.

Richard Murray b abt 1802 in PA and Elspa b abt 1804 PA.
Catherine (Murray) Cottrell must have died around 1878 because she failed to pick up her pension money at that time.
One of her daughter Susann Jane Cottrell went on to marry Charley Smith and lived in Mt. Holley, Warren Co., Ohio (my grt grandparents).
Any additional information on this family would be appreciated. Thanks
Henry and Leah MARQUISS Boatman and Lucinda and Sarah Clark

I am researching the Boatman family of Highland County. For years I've wondered who the little Clark girls were that were found living with my g-g-grandparents on the 1850 census for Jackson Township, Highland Co. My g-g-grandparents were Henry and Leah MARQUISS Boatman.

Besides their own large family they had living with them Lucinda Clark, age 13, and Sarah Clark, age 7. Both b.in OH.

In the 1840 census, a Christopher Clark and family were neighbors to my Boatmans.

Last night I found a copy of page 284 of a book (I think the name is) "Marriages of Highland Co., Ohio." In 1835 an Elizabeth BOATMAN married a Christopher Clark. This was a big find!!!

The parents of my above mentioned g-g-grandfather were Elias and Mary "Polly" KINNER Boatman. There has always been a couple of gaps in this family's group sheet. They had eight known children - but I only have names and information for six. The oldest child is my g-g-grandfather Henry Boatman. The next to oldest child I BELIEVE is Elizabeth BOATMAN Clark. The fact that my g-g-father took in his younger sister's kids makes sense.

I don't believe the Clark girls continued to live with Boatman family.

If any of this line is connected to you or you have any information - please response.

aprilrobinson199@bellsouth.net
W. A. FENNER, Dining and Lunch Rooms and Confectioner, No. 9, North High street.--As an accomplished caterer to the public in this important department, we notice Mr. W. A. Fenner, who is a native of this county, where he was born in 1841. After his early school days, the war of the Rebellion coming on, he enlisted in 1862 as a member of company D, Eighty-eight regiment, O. V. I., in which he served for six months. He then re-enlisted and became of member of company F, Thirteenth O. V. I., in which he received the commission of Second Lieutenant, and served with credit through many of the thrilling incidents of those historic years up to the time of receiving his honorable discharge in June, 1865. After the war he was variously employed in business and labor, up to the time of his engaging in his present business in 1891. Mr. Fenner has a neatly fitted up business room, and is prepared to furnish farmers, citizens, or trancient visitors to the city for first-class meals at regular hours, or meals or lunch at all hours, and will supply best Baltimore oysters or ice cream by the dish in their season. He will get up special meals to order for parties, balls or societies on reasonable terms, and also carries in stock fine confections, fruits, tobacco, cigars, etc. The bakery department supplies choice bread cakes, pies etc, to order for weddings or festivals. This house has grown in public favor and patronage from residents of both city and country.

Source: Page 60 General business review of Highland County, Ohio : for the year 1892-3.

Robert and Amanda Ludwick lived in Hamer Twp, Highland County, OH, in the 1860 Census following their marriage. From an old "sampler" done by Amanda's sister, we believe there were two small children who died as babies before 1860 and may be buried in the area. They are shown on the sampler as James William Ludwick and Thomas Edward Ludwick.

I would like to find their gravesites, if possible, and determine if actual death dates are recorded.

Does anyone have cemetery information for that area that could help me with this project?

Contact me at chartemp@aol.com.

Thanks so much.

Isaac James Ferguson

My research stops here:
Isaac James Ferguson was born in Highland Co. Ohio probably in Nov. 1832. He died in Marion Co. Iowa on March 14, 1874 and is buried in the Pleasantville Cemetery, Iowa. Isaac's father is unknown to me at present, however the first record I have of Isaac is the 1850 Federal census in Highland Co. Ohio. Head of household is his mother Sarah, a widow born in Penn. in 1808. Isaac and his siblings are:
Isaac -
William - who I believe came to Iowa and lived and died in Wayne Co. Iowa.
Elizabeth -
Jackson - who was in Van Buren Co. Iowa in 1860 with a wife and 3 children.
(twins) Delilah - who married Jonathan Gibson on 4-24-1869 in Warren Co. Iowa and died 9-11-1873, at 27 years of age.
Elanzsa(sp) -
Minerva -

Isaac married Nancy Jane Erving on Sept. 12, 1855 in Highland Co. Ohio. Nancy Jane's last name is listed by various spellings but this is from the IGI record and the Highland Co. marriage records. They had at least 5 children; Margaret Tamson, John B, Henry Franklin (my gg-grandfather), Maxwell B., Mary I., & Della B.

Several of Isaac's son's add an "i" to their last name making it the way it is today "Ferguison." The story goes that they were trying to hold on the their Irish heritage. I'm hoping to find out how much truth there is to that.

Anyone that has any information about Isaac, his parents, and/or his siblings, please contact me.

Can anyone help with information from the Land, Probate and Court records for Highland County between the years of 1805-1833. My GGgrandfather, David Phibbs married Nancy Feely in Brown Co, OH in 1833. The closest Phibbs family I could find was in Highland Co. James, John and William Phibbs (1830 Census) I'm curious to know more about these families and if David's name (or Nancy Feely) come up in any of these records. The Phibbs mentioned above are from Concord Twp.
Sincere Thanks.

Will of Benjamin H. Johnson

INTRODUCTION: The following is the text of the last will and testament of Benjamin H. Johnson, my great-great-great-granduncle, and half-brother to my ggg-grandfather, Thomas Moorman Johnson. I say "half-brother" because according to Benjamin's tombstone, he was born 16 January 1782, and Quaker records show that Sarah Moorman, mother to Thomas Moorman Johnson (born 19 April 1790), married James Johnson on July 8, 1789. Given Benjamin's birth date and the marriage date of Sarah Moorman to James Johnson, Sarah could not be Benjamin's mother. I also know that James Johnson was born around 1740, he would have been 49-50 years old when he married her (most men back then were married on average around 25 years old). I have not found the name of James Johnson's first wife, so Benjamin's mother is listed for now as "unknown".

The New Garden Quaker Monthly Meeting (MM) records show that on July 29 1797, James and his 2nd wife, Sarah & children: Thomas Moorman, David and William, were received on certificate from Deep River MM (dated July 3, 1797). It was also recorded under the New Garden MM that on November 30, 1805, he and his family were granted a certificate to the Miami MM in Ohio. The New Garden and Deep River meetings were located in Guilford County, North Carolina. However, David Johnson's (born 1792) tombstone, which is next to Benjamin H. Johnson's in the Greenfield Cemetery, Hillsboro, OH, shows that he was born in Stokes County, North Carolina (near Guilford Co.). David Johnson, who was the full brother to Thomas, was named the executor to Benjamin's will.

The Miami MM in Ohio, shows that on 10 July 1806, James Johnson, his wife Sarah and their children; Thomas, David and William, were received on certificate from the New Garden MM, NC, dated 30 November 1805. The Fairfield MM, near Leesburg in Ohio, shows that James died on 10 August 1824 and was buried at Fairfield MM cemetery (just south of Leesburg). So far, I have not found any mention of Benjamin H. Johnson in Quaker records, but since his father was a Quaker, I am hoping I will find him listed with his mother and father in other records, perhaps up in Virginia.

The following text of the will was found in Will Book #5, starting on page 209, at the Probate Court, Highland County Courthouse, Hillsboro, Ohio, when I visited there in September of 1998. Belinda Stotler, ggg-grandniece to B.H. Johnson

TEXT OF WILL

"I, Benjamin H. Johnson, of Hillsborough in the County of Highland in the State of Ohio do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner following.

1st I direct my debts and funeral expenses to be paid.
2ND I give and bequeath all my chattels personal to my live executors hereinafter named and appointed to be by them sold either at public or private sale as they shall judge best and the proceeds to pass into the general fund of my estate for distribution as in this my last will directed and I hereby release my executors from making out and returning to the office of the proper Court any inventory of appraisement and sale of my personal property aforesaid: and I hereby devise that the Probate Court may not require said personal chattels to be appraised or sold according to the statute.
3rd I hereby direct my executors to sell all of my real estate in Hillsboro except as may be hereinafter excepted at public out cry or at private sale as in their discretion they shall think best and upon such terms as to payment as they may deem most expedient: and I hereby fully authorize and empower my said Executors or the survivor of them to sign, seal, acknowledge and deliver all the writings or conveyances necessary or proper to invest purchasers with complete titles thereto.
Help Identifying Cemetery

Attached is a portion of a Highland county death certificate, for John BOTTS, b. 14 Apr 1852 - d. 25 Aug 1932. Although he died in Clinton county, he lived the majority of his life in Dodson Township, Highland county. The death certificates indicates that he was buried at Dodsonville. His wife, Mary Jane (Moler), b. May 1854 - d. bef 1910, should be buried with him.

I cannot read the cemetery name as written on Line 18: Burial, Cremation or Removal. Best guess is "Luthean" - is this a misspelling of "Lutheran" and if so, what is the official name of this cemetery and where is it located? If not, can anyone offer suggestions?

I am searching for information on the following families:

1. David and Emily Smith - Sold Land in the area of Fall Creek, Paint Twp, Highland County in 1836 to Isaac Simpson (part of Virginia Military Survey 2928 assigned to John Wilkins).

2. Archibald & Sarah (Pillars?) Smith - owned land on same survey. - Archibald d. before 1835 in Hancock County, Indiana.

(Most of above information is from Land Deeds)

I believe these two families are related. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows something more about these families. I believe I'm connected to David Smith.

Thank you

I am a descendent of the Drais/Drace line. I recently discovered a Lemuel K. Drais, who is a very interesting man. He was born in Kentucky, but raised in Ohio. He served valiantly in the Union Army. He enlisted in April of 1861 and was released from service in 1865.
My question is who is his family and his descendents? I am trying to fit him into my bigger family picture. I have more information on him and his life here in Arizona if any one is interested.

Please email me if you have any information. Thank you.Bonnie

At this time I am offering an obituary/death notice lookup for Highland County. The years I can research are March, 1939 to 1977. But the years 1949, 1950, 1953 are NOT available. I will need the exact date of death to do the lookup.

A number of obits and death notices for people who lived in the New Market Township area are now available on the website which can be found:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohcnewma/
In 1900 Alex Rutter and his wife Mary E. (Furrow) Rutter were in Highland County. They had a daughter named Anna (born about 1887) and a daughter named Myrtle (born about 1883). There were other children in that record, too. Myrtle married Joseph Henry "Arehood" and they appear in the 1910 census in Fayette County. I'm trying to figure out who Joseph Henry's parents were. According to his draft registration card, his name was spelled Arhood and he was born 23 March 1884.

Allen Jones and Nancy Ross Strain were married 27 May 1840 in Highland County, Ohio. They had at least two children: James S. Jones (b. 1842 Ohio) and Arthur [Adoniran] E. Jones (b. 1846 Ohio).

Allen Jones is my 2nd Great Grandfather. Nancy Ross Strain died before 1855 as I find Allen married to Dorothy Maria Andrews 06 December 1855 in Knox Co., Illinois. I have been unable to find Allen and Nancy Ross (Strain) Jones and their two sons (James and Arthur) on the 1850 census.

Allen and Dorothy (Andrews) Jones plus children: James, Arthur, Benjamin, John and William are all listed on the 1860 census of Knox Co., Illinois.

Am in need of further information concerning the Jones family in Highland County, Ohio. Who were Allen's parents and siblings and where were they living in the county? Would also like to know about the parents and siblings of Nancy Ross Strain!

Thank you!
Vicky (ticvic50 (at) cox (dot) net)
