HIGHLAND HOUSE, Col. C. T. Pope, Proprietor, East Main Street.--As on of those hostelries which reflect credit upon this city and contributes to its popularity, we notice especially the Highland House, under the efficient management of Col. C. T. Pope. Mr. Pope is a native of this county, and in early life was reared upon the farm. On the breaking out of the war of the rebellion, he enlisted in 1862, as a member of Co. F. 60th O. V. I., serving as Second Lieutenant for one year. After returning to civil life ho took an active and intelligent interest in public affairs, and was variously employed up to 1890, when he was chosen by his fellow citizens to fill the office of sheriff of this county, on the Democratic ticket, although the county has a recognized Republican majority. At the expiration of his term he returned to the farm, and in 1885 was appointed by President Cleveland postmaster of this city, which position he filled with business fidelity and acceptance until superceded by the present incumbent, under new political administration, in 1889. He then took possession of the Highland House, where his wide acquaintance and executive ability have secured more than local celebrity. The Highland House is a 2½ story brick structure, containing 20 well-furnished rooms, and located on East Main street. The various departments are conveniently and neatly furnished, and clean and comfortable beds, and a well-provided table are assured to guests at reasonable prices. A large feed stable is attached, and this house enjoys a liberal share of patronage from the traveling public, as well as a large popularity of farmers and trancient visitors from the surrounding towns. Mr. Pope is also a member of the board of education of this city.
