This photo was found by a Schmitz cousin of mine in another family member's things. On the back it says "The Matt Schmitt Children who went back to Germany. I was the Boys Gotmother." It was taken in the Lampman studio in Holgate. I assume that Matt is short for Matthias. These children all look like girls to me but the oldest one may be a boy (dressed in altarboy robe?)
Does anyone recognize these children or have any information on the family?
Thanks,
Jeanne

I have just finished my overhaul of the Henry County Schools page on my website.

http://www.oldohioschools.com/henry_county.htm

I am still missing quite a few pictures of some of the old schools as well as some dates and locations. Please check out the new page and let me know what you think or if you can help with any other information. It now loads much faster and is more user-friendly for people wanting to only view a certain county.

Richard and Barbary Butler, in Henry County, Ohio 1850

I's searching for Anthony Butler (aka D. Anthony and Dunn Anthony). I found Anthony on the 1850 census for Henry County, Ohio. It lists the following Butlers, which appear to probably all be family (all are on page 40B, lines 2-7, home number 555). Barbary and Richard, both 50 (this are the names I have for Dunn Anthony’s parents, Richard was a farmer). Children are Jefferson (14), Hamilton (11), Annas (female - 8), and Anthony (4). Anthony shows up again in 1880, in an Indiana census with his wife Sarah Alice Knepper, also from Ohio.

Does anyone have ANY information on these names? I'm mainly looking for Richard's parents but would love ANY data on any of the other listed people. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!!
Death Certificates for Ohio from 1903-1953 are now available online at:

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html

You can see the actual death certificate and might be able to print it off, but some users are having problems with that function. There is a place to report problems so maybe the site needs some "tweaking" yet.

You will need to register your name and email address and wait for an email confirmation before you can use the site.

When you go to the site for the first time, if you don't have Adobe Flash Player on your computer, you will be prompted to download it. If you have a dial-up connection, be patient because everything will take a little longer to open. After you download Adobe Flash Player, you will be prompted to close your browser window to complete the download process. If you have AOL dial-up connection, you will need to sign offline completely and then sign on again.

Marilyn - Board Administrator

I'm trying to find out exactly when and where Otto John Nichols died. He was also recorded as John O., John Otto, or O. J. Nichols and was born in Monroe County, NY, on 26 Nov 1884. He moved to Henry County, OH, and married Ethel M. Rike in 1909. She died 9 Dec 1918, and he then married Ella Clausen in the early 1920s. We think he died in 1927 or 1928 (definitely by 1930), but there appears not to be a death certificate for him. Any ideas? Thanks.

Johann Spadholtz's family lived near Jewel after 1866. His sister was Maria Biederstadt (August) who lived next door, then moved to Napoleon. A second sister was Wilhelmine Albertine Friedericke, married John Herman Rohrs. Maria's daughter was named Mary, married John F. Oberhaus. Their daughter Mary C. Oberhaus (b 1875 in OH) married Fred Zum Felde on 24 Dec 1904, lived in Napoleon. I did not know my great-grandfather (Johann) had sisters until I recently found a wedding photo of Mary Oberhaus and Fred Zum Felde. Would love to share/communicate. Family was Lutheran. Worshipped in Florida, Okolona and Napoleon, that I know of.

MCQUEEN / SNYDER CONNECTION

Looking for the parents of WILLIAM H. MCQUEEN (and his sister Adeline/Angeline), who are shown living with John J. and Elizabeth Snyder in the 1870 Ohio census of Ridgeville Twp., Henry County. Henry was 16-years-old and Adaline was 14-years-old.

In the 1860 census of Clinton Twp., Fulton County they are still living with John and Elizabeth Snyder.

I believe Hannah Snyder was the mother of these two McQueen children. Hannah must have married a McQueen. Perhaps the information I am looking for is in the death records before 1860. I believe the parents of William H. and Adaline McQueen died before 1860. Two of the Snyder's teenage children died before 1860 and were buried in Kline United Brethren Cemetery, located in Freedom Twp. I know I am close to finally closing this ten year search to find the name of my great-great-great grandfather McQueen. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Looking for Harry Ostrander m. in Henry Co. 24 Dec. 1896

I'm looking for Harry Ostrander and any information about him. He is my ggGrandfather and he seems to have disappeared when my ggGrandmother died when my great-grandmother was two. My G-Grandmother (his daughter) only met him once in her life. The family rumor (from my great-aunt) is that he abandoned his daughter after her mother died and went to either Pennsylvania or New York to teach at a University or College. He had a brother, Roy Ostrander, who was close to the family whom my G-Grandmother saw relatively often.

Here is what I do know about him:

I found some info on FamilySearch.org that lists his birth year as 1873 and gives a middle initial of "C". His wife (my ggGrandmother) ws Adella May Mohler b. 26 Nov 1877 in Ohio and d. 23 Jul 1899 (presumably in OH although this isn't confirmed). They were married 24 Dec. 1896 in Henry, OH (not sure of the exact source for this since it came from information I inherited from my Mom).

Their daughter (my great-Grandmother) is Edith Ruby Ostrander b. 27 Nov 1897 in OH and d. 4 Feb 1951 in Toledo, OH. Edith was raised by her maternal Grandparents- John and Caroline Dunmire Mohler.

I would love it if anyone "out there" had any information at all on Harry- this has become a major brick wall.

Thanks!

Melissa

Silas BURRILL - 1st Wife: Louisa Hoffman, 2nd Wife: Elizabeth Andrews

My GG Grandfather, Silas Burrill married Louisa Hoffman abt. 1849. Silas was born in OH in 1827 and Louisa came to the U.S. with her parents from Bavaria and I believe they settled in the Henry Co. area. I cannot find Silas Burrill's parents and I am wondering if he was Native American. My maternal grandmother always told us she was 1/4 Native American. Also, Silas and Louisa had a son, Philip who was about 8 years old in the 1860 census and my G Grandmother Louisa Burrill was 5 years old. Perhaps her mother, Louisa (Hoffman) Burrill died because Silas Burrill married Elizabeth Andrews in 1859. Does anyone have any information on these families? Thank you very much

I am trying to get some documentation to prove Rosina Inman's father was Jonathan Inman. She was born about 1830 in Maine and the family moved to Ohio shortly after that. She married John Sheneman about 1848.

Does anyone know of any school records from that time that may list her parents or have access to probate records? I looked for a will for Jonathan (who died before the 1880 census) and could not find one. Her mother was living with another family in 1880.

Or does anyone have access to church records at that time?

Does anyone have any ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated

Also includes a photo of Martha Hahn. Apparently the photos at one time belonged to Verna, Carl's daughter. Does anyone have information on this family?

Mary Ann MATHERS

my sister just recently sent in to find out our dad's biological mother & father's name. well the state of ohio gave us the name of the mother, MARY ANN MATHERS, who was born in Napoleon, OH on Aug. 7th, 1924 and died in 1965. Her parents were JAMES CHARLES MATHERS & EVA MAGDALEN MOTTER. there was no given father's name on the record. However, we found out through some searching that MARY ANN had a sister, BETTY JEAN and she died 2 yrs. ago. so my sister contacted BETTY JEAN'S husband and basically told my sister that she was losing it and there was no way that MARY ANN could be the mother of my dad. He told her that MARY ANN had celebral palsy. Now why would the state of ohio give us this name and it not be right. Or is the family that determined to keep it a secret?

So i guess what i want to know is if there is anyone out there who knows of a MARY ANN MATHERS that did have a child and gave up for adoption. she even named my dad~GREGG THOMAS MATHERS.

I'm looking for anyone who may be able to help me find out where John E. Black, born sometime between 1810 and 1820 in Ohio, was born, and who his parents were. On the 1880 census his parents are listed as being from PA.

He was married to Elizabeth (Ward) in Orange Twp, Hancock Co., Ohio, April 21, 1842, and they had 3 sons that I know of,

Ira Dewey b.July 12, 1844 m. Lucetta (Lucy) Baumche and moved to Iowa, (my line)(served in the Civil War and lsited father as living in Napoleon, Ohio)

John W. (maybe Wesley) b.abt. 1846 m. Hannah Long/Hannah Bost, stayed in Ohio

Eli Franklin b.abt 1849 m. Nancy Jane Thompson, also stayed in Ohio, buried in Findlay, Hancock Co., Ohio.

If anyone recognizes these families and can tell me anything, please help! I have much info on my own line, but not much on the brothers, or the parents. I seem to be stuck with John E.-one thing I have noted, he was apparently a shoemaker later in life and I had found a reference to a Black in PA that was a shoemaker, just can't remember where I found this info....

Thanks.

I have finally traced my great-great grandmother to living in Henry County in 1910 and dying in Toledo Dec. 28, 1915. This was exceedingly difficult because she married 6 times(twice to 1st husband) and lived most of her life in Indiana. Now that I have her death certificate confirming that she died in the hospital in Toledo, it says place of burial was Napoleon Ohio. The undertaker's name is scrawled, perhaps Bukenkamp at 1003 Browley??? My question is, where do I turn to to find out in what cemetery she was buried? I tried the online obituary index, no luck. I don't know how many cemeteries are in Napoleon nor if there are books of tombstone inscriptions. Her husband was John S. Black and I know absolutely nothing about him except that she married him in Miami County, Indiana and she is listed as "married" on her death certificate, but the informant was someone with the Lucas Co. Infirmary. Her daughter who lived with her in 1910 was Gertrude Shay, a widow. Lucy is listed as married in the 1910 census but John Black is not in the household. In 1900 she was still in Indiana, listed as married and her name was Black, but John Black was not in the household. Can anyone help me find her tombstone - if there is one..... I have looked through Miami Co. Indiana tombstones (most of them online) and did not find her there, so assume she is in Henry county.

From what I've seen in a World Connect file, George W. Foltz married Adaline R. Dilsaver in 1885 in Henry County. I assume that this is based on county marriage records. I think this George may have been the son of John and Katherine Foltz, found in the 1880 census in Damascus. I'd like to know when George died. I think I found Addie in 1900, staying as a guest in the home of Benjamin Carlisle, and widowed. Any information appreciated.

The entry just before Zenz is for Zeller Family, F590, submitted by Terry J. Foss. The entry after is for Zimmerman, Jean and Ed.

I'd like to know the title of the book this is from and page number.

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Henry County, Ohio as his home of record.

Soldier: Robert H. Quillman
Born: July 23, 1927, Caucasian
Date of loss: November 29, 1950 Killed in Action in North Korea. His remains were never recovered.

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 158 families in Ohio that have not been located. There is one family from Henry County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial.
QUILLMAN, KIA Korean, War, Henry County

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Henry County. Ohio as his home of record.

Soldier:
Born:
Date of loss:

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 158 families in Ohio that have not been located. There is one family from Henry County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/.
MEEK in Washington Twp

I am seeking MEEK burials in Washington Twp cemeteries. I do know that a John Meek born 1767 and died 9/7/1835 is suppose to be buried in Showman Cemetery. I am trying to confirm this. He served in the War of 1812.

Possibly a John Meek born 1804-1807 and died before 1870 and his wife Harriett born 1804-1807 died before 1854 could be buried in Washington Twp. It is led to believe that John Meek above could possibly be father of this John Meek.

Would appreciate any Meek information buried in Washington Twp.
