Some say that Hugh Carter's father is Thomas born 1770. I have not been able to determine that myself. Unfortunately there are many Thomas Carters in the early censuses of Ohio, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Hugh's wife Emma Wychoff(Wyckoff,Wickoff, etc) was born 1821 in Ohio to William Wychoff. William married his 2nd wife Freelove Crabtree in Cadiz, Harrison, Ohio. William died in 1865 in Harrison County, Ohio.
Hugh's first child Mary was born in 1843 in Harrison County, Ohio. Hugh was a tinner and sometime in the early 1850s he moved to Iowa where his wife died in 1856 and he died in 1860.
Of interest is the adult with Hugh's children in the 1860 Iowa census. She is Mary Carter born 1801 in VA. Her husband could be a relative. A Mary Adams Peake b. 1801 in Fairfax,VA married William Brown Carter in 1825 according to an Ancestry family tree,
