Hi all, I've been trying to track an ancestor of mine, James Bromagen/Bromagem (various spellings have been seen) who was living with his family in Cincinnati in 1870. By 1880 his wife was a widow so I was hoping to be able to find him in the Hamilton Co., death records at the Blegen Library. I got notification yesterday though, that they did not find anything for him. So now I guess that means that he died outside Cincinnati but I don't know how to find out when since state-wide registration wasn't required until 1882. I was thinking of looking for a tombstone transcription project that may have come across a grave for him but the odds of that seem pretty slim, especially with a 10 yr. search range. Oh and to make matters worse, it looks like there is a question of identity with another man, same name and same approx. age from Darke Co., OH. If anyone has any suggestions on other ways to find out when he died I would greatly appreciate it.

Closed Irish Portion of St. Joseph Cemetery

I recently found out that my great great grandparents are buried in the closed Irish portion of St. Joseph Cemetery on W. 8th Street and Enright in Price Hill. As I understand it, this was originally a part of the Old St. Joseph Cemetery but is now maintained by New St. Joseph Cemetery.

New St. Joe's was kind enough to e-mail me an old map of the closed Irish portion with my great great grandparents graves circled in red.

I'm looking for any information as to why the Irish portion was closed to the public. All that New St. Joe's could tell me was that over the years it fell into great disrepair and that in the early 1960's, after weeks of newspaper notices for families to claim whatever they wanted to save, the cemetery was cleared of all broken and dangerous monuments and that they keep this portion closed to the public for safety concerns.

I checked Newsdex on the Cincinnati Library's site and there is an article that appeared in the Cincinnati Post Times Star on 9/19/1960 1:2 entitled "Vandals Smash 22 Tombstones in the Old Blocks Section of St. Joseph Cemetery." There were two more articles about vandalism on 5/22/1966 and 8/18/1966. Didn't see anything about closing the Irish portion.

Does anyone out there know anything about this or maybe can direct me to resources to check out.

Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I keep finding family members listed as being buried there... which is a good thing ...right!!! It's just that every time I have my list together.. I find 1 to 5 more people there... I'm up to 53 right now... I was thinking it would be easier to find them if there was a master list I could read...

I live in Texas so I can not go to the Library to look them up... darn..

Thank you

Searching for information about a Mary Schwartz. Her funeral card says that she was born in 1856 in Delhi Township and died in 1956 in Green Township. I don't know if Schwartz was her maiden name or her married name. She is buried in St. Al's Cemetery in Bridgetown. This card was found with my grandparents' belongings. We cannot connect her to our family. However, it is possible that she was the second wife of a George Schwartz (Swartz) born 1844 in Germany, and died in Hamilton County after 1880. In 1880 he had a daughter Mena, (11) and was a widower.

Barb Walter

I am looking for information on the German families,Endres and Dukarm who came to the US from the Banat region of Hungary (Now part of Romania), in the early 1900s. All indications are that both families first settled in the Hamilton Co., Ohio area. Elizabeth Dukarm and Peter Endres married and went to Akron, OH. Frank Endres married a Pauline and ended up in Michigan, 4 children (Karl, Frank, Louise and Kathryn). Jacob Endres stayed in Cincy, had 3 children (Karl, Helen and ?) Katie Endres (Peter's twin) and Barbara Endres Leidecker probably stayed in Hamilton Co. Elizabeth Dukarm (a sister to Elizabeth Dukarm Endres) married John Brunner and farmed in Batavia, OH, atleast 2 children ("Babe" and John). Anna Endres and Nicholas Haasz married and had two children (Nick Jr. and Elizabeth) in the old country. They also went to Akron Oh. If any of these name sound familiar, please e-mail me at BrinTx@aol.com This part of my family tree is really baffling me, I can make no headway. Thank you.

I am hoping to find information on the burial of my 3rd great grandmother Catharina Elisabeth Menkhaus (nee Tubesing, born Dierker). She died 9/8/1891 in Covington, Kentucky aged 59 years and her death record (which can be found on Ancestry.com by searching for "Kathrine Menkalaus") states that she was to buried at St. John's in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky but it is crossed out and "St. Bernard Cincinnati" is written in underneath. Furthermore, there are more stray writings on the death record such as "Sept 8/91 Linneman & Moore undertakers", and "7479 Sept 10/91".

I am hoping to find her place of burial as well as anything else that record may state. She may have been buried in a Menkhaus plot in that cemetery, but I am unsure because she died before her husband (he died in 1909). She also was previously married to Johann Heinrich Tubesing, who died in 1870. Maybe she is buried with him?

Thank you for any help you can provide,

Erik

Obit Lookup Request Please - Fürst/Fuest

Request an obituary lookup for the following individuals that are shown in the Hamilton County Genealogical Society's obituary / death notice index.

For the ones that appear to be duplicates (e.g., likely the same obit/notice posted to Cincinnati Volksblatt (Vb) and Cincinnati Volksfreund (Vf)), only one is requested. For Clara Fürst/Fuerst, the Cincinnati Daily Gazette (Gz) would be great...

Many, many, thanks in advance. For anyone interested, my current research on the these individuals is included below.

Vb 1860-1869 c Fürst, Carl
Vf 1860-1869 c Fürst, Karl

Vb 1870-1879 * Fürst, Karl

Vb 1870-1879 x Fürst, Clara
Gz 1870-1879 Fuerst, Clara

Vf 1860-1869 Fürst, Margaretha Jung

Vf 1860-1869 Fürst, Sophia Heins
Vb 1860-1869 Fürst, Sophie Heins

My research "guess" is that Karl Fürst was born in Hesse-Darmstadt about 1829. On 19 Jun 1856, he married Margaretha Jung in Hamilton County -- where they can be found in the 1860 census with a one year old daugther, Clara. But his given name was recorded as "Chas".

Margaretha Jung Fürst died 12-18 months after the 1860 census and on 5 Feb 1862, Karl Fürst remarried Sophia Heintz, who was born about 1830 in Bavaria, Germany.

Karl and Sophia had two daughters, Sophia and Mathilda ("Tillie") Katherine Fürst - and maybe a son, Carl who died in infancy / childhood in the 1860s. Sophia Fürst never married and died in 1950 in San Francisco. Mathilda married William Helck (about 10 years her junior) on 3 Jun 1903 in Hamilton County and died in Hamilton County on 24 May 1944. William and Mathilda are buried in Spring Grove Cemetery.

Sophia Heintz Fürst died in the late 1860's and Karl Fürst again remarried, this time to a Magdalena Heintz -- whom I suspect was the younger sister of Sophia Heintz. Karl and Magdalena, with three daughters (Clara, Sophia, and Tillie), can be found in the 1870 census. Karl's given name is again recorded as Charles (and Magdalena's is transcribed as Lena). On Ancestry, the surname is mis-transcribed as Turst.

Karl and Magdalena had one daughter, Ida Fürst, born 24 Aug 1870, just after the 1870 census. She never married and died on 18 Apr 1916 in Hamilton, Butler, Ohio -- living with her widowed mother.

Karl Fürst died in 1870s. In the early 1880s, Magdalena Heintz Fürst remarried a Peter J Burkhardt, after his first wife, Elizabeth Vollmer, had died in 1881.

Peter Burkhard died in 1891 and is buried in Spring Grove Cemetery. Magdalina Heintz Fürst Burkhardt died on 30 Dec 1923 in Hamilton, Butler, Ohio and along with her daughter Ida, is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Hamilton, Butler, Ohio.

Lost Relative: Augusta FUHRMANN

I seemed to have hit a brick wall on Augusta Fuhrmann, my grandfather’s first wife.

When my grandfather married the second time on 10/25/1913, he stated that he “was once previously married and divorced.” I checked with the Clerk of Courts in Cincinnati (wound up talking with Jeff in the Research Center at 946-5606 if anyone needs this resource) and they have nothing on file regarding a divorce between Augusta and Fred Fuhrmann during the time of 7/8/1902 (birth of their last child) and 10/25/1913 (date of grandfather’s second marriage).

Augusta Fuhrmann appears in the 1900 census with my grandfather and two children. She says she was born in Ohio in 3/1879, her father in France, and her mother in Germany. I have four variations of her maiden name – Purath, Purott, Pierott, and Pierot – taken from her 12/9/1896 marriage certificate and death certificates of her children. I can find nothing for her using the variations of her maiden name. She does not appear in the 1910, 1920 or 1930 census for Cincinnati. I have checked the Death Indexes for the City of Cincinnati and also for Hamilton County with no success. She could have moved out of state. Other Augusta Fuhrmann’s appear when I search on ancestry.com, but the dates don’t work.

The only other thing I can think to do in Cincinnati is to check the Probate Court marriages records and see if it shows that she remarried.

Any other ideas on what to check would be really appreciated. Thanks.
I have tried to find where my gr gr grandfather and his wife are buried. I don't know their religion and can find no death certs on either.
They were said to live in an area call Sadamsville?
What cemetaries were around at that time?
He was Tilghman(spelled many ways) WRIGHT b. NY, 1818 and lived in Cincinnati in 1880 census with his wife Annie, sons James, George & Frank. Tilghman is said to have died in 1891. No cert or cemetary found

His wife was still alive and living with sons Frank (hoh) and George in 1900. She is said to be put in either county or state hospital ca 1910/11, where she died within a month.
He next of kin was James Wright, her son. Nothing found on her either. She was Annie Fleming AGNEW Wright b.PA ca 1828. I would think dieing in a county or state hospital there would be SOME info.
If certs were not being employed at the time, than what cemeteries were around for their burials.
I have spent 15 years writing to courts, probate, historical society and everywhere else I could think of.
HELP!
GINNY 2 at vmartinez5946@aol.com

Would like to obtain, or otherwise confirm, the date of my great-grandfather's marriage in Cincinnati. The Hamilton Co. Genealog. Soc. index tells me it occurred between 1870 and 1879, and was reported in the Cincinnati Daily Times on page 1. Thomas Garrison's web-page, Roots.Web, gives a date of Feb. 11, 1874, but no source listed and have not been able to verify this. His name: Allen Dinkle; bride (not my great-grandmother): Signora Berry. Can anyone help with this?

GENTLE and COTTY Families of Delhi, Hamilton OH

Hi, I am looking for help figuring this out.
My 4th great grandmother Mary Cotty was married 13 May 1858 in Hamilton Co OH to Jeremiah Parker. I found her and Jeremiah living with a Julia Gentle in the 1850 Washington, Preble Co., Ohio Census.
Mary stated her mother was born in MD and her father in DE.
Julia Gentle's surname was Hendrix, she was married to John Gentle 05 Jan 1814 in Ohio. In the 1820, 1830 and 1840 census I have found a William Cotty and a William Gentle on the same census page living in the same township and county together, Delhi, Hamilton Co., Ohio.
I believe William Cotty may be Mary's father and William Gentle could be John's father or brother and that Mary's mother's maiden name might be Gentle. John Gentle also came over from Maryland where Mary stated her mother was born.
This would all make sense since Mary was living with the Gentle's in 1850 at the age of 18.
Does anyone know anything about these two families and if they are indeed related.
I have had no luck finding a birth record for Mary or figuring out who her parents are or if she had any siblings. I found her obituary in Illinois but that gave me no family information. I don't know if she was orphaned. William Cotty doesn't appear in the 1850 census so that is a possibility which is perhaps why she was living with the Gentles.
Your help is much needed. Thanks in advance. -Summer Owens
I'm searching for the death of my 4th great grandfather, Johann Hermann Räkers. He and his family arrived in Cincinnati in 1847, and his wife remarried on 6 Jan 1850, so that would likely put his death between 1847 and 1850. He would have been about 73-75 years old (he was born 31 May 1774).

Possible surname variants include Rakers, Rekers, Reckers, Rackers...

Hopefully there is a resource out there that would provide such a record for this time period.

Thanks,

Erik

I'm trying to find an obituary for Charles Denton, born about 1880 and died sometime between 1950-59. His wife was Luella Denton, who died Dec 1, 1959 in Cincinnati. Is there anybody in Cincinnati with access to old newspapers who could lookup Luella's obit for me? I'm hoping her obit will mention when her husband died or at the very least say where she is buried, then I can check that cemetery for her husband's death date (assuming he is buried beside her), and eventually get his obit. Thanks for any help. Will gladly pay for any copies or postage.
