I don't think the 1880 Census is entirely transcribed!

I have 1870 Friderike Westenhoff and 1900 Friderike Westenhoff. In 1870 her husband and sons (John, William, Henry, John) are all living. By 1900, I know that she and William were the only ones alive. In 1880, it should have been Friderike, John, William, John (at least).

I've tried searching for neighbors on both sides at both times and the neighbors are missing as well, so I'm thinking this page isn't transcribed yet.

Can anyone help?

If he was adopted, I'd think he would have the JONAS surname. Perhaps he's a grandchild that is being cared for temporarily because the mother is ill? I searched the 1870 census and found a possible match in Garrard Co., KY. There's a Horatio DOTY, b. 1859 KY living with B.F. & Clara DOTY and 4 other siblings. The index transcriber mistakenly indexed this Horatio as mulatto, but the census image, which I've attached, clearly shows he is white.

The Cincinnati Public Library has a fabulous resource called the virtual library, where anyone can download books, music, maps, etc.
They have the images of Cincinnati city directories for most years between 1819 and 1894 online, you can download them as a PDF file.

Here is the link to the Virtual Library page:
http://virtuallibrary.cincinnatilibrary.org/virtuallibrary/

And then there is this site, there are other states on this one!
There are a bunch of Cincinnati directories, as well as other places, up on the Directory page:
http://directory.evendon.com

You can confine your search to the Cincinnati books using the SEARCH SELECTOR in the Left Pane. Or you can browse one book at a time by clicking on that book's link. When it loads, you will find links to all of the pages in the Left Pane. As you click on the link for a page, it loads in the
Center Pane. The Center Pane also includes links to step forward and backward one page at a time.

Don't be too trusting of the search index. It's pretty good but not perfect.

To view a list of material available click on "Browse Virtual Library". The directories are under "Downloadable City Directories".
There are also some books of genealogical interest under "Downloadable Old and Rare Books". They have the Cincinnati Sandborn maps for 1904-1917 online as well (under maps).

Hope this helps you,
Lori Deible Chaffin

Dear J.M.
I didn't find any obvious links in Darke County, Ohio. I am aware of the large Weaver presence there, however none cross into my lines from KY, particularly, George W. Weaver & Mary J. McClanahan. I will be investigating this family in October when I visit Hamilton Co., OH. My connection to McClanahans in KY is well documented through two separate marriages. George and Mary had at least one child, Emily, and she likely married in Hamilton County.
Excellent relpy! I enjoy a challenge, and I'll take this one on. I know I have a starting point in Addyston, ca 1900. I need to copy the actual census schedule for Hamilton County with Geo. and Mary. It will likely give a street address. The next time I'm in Waltham, MA, I'll check the Regional NARA. When I return to Ohio this Fall, I can check Hamilton Co Court records for properties mortgaged by Weavers in that area. I expect to see a marriage of Ethel Weaver after about 1905-1910, she'd be at least 15 yo. Maybe the Cinti Public Library on Walnut St will have some materials. It would be wonderful to identify a male born to George and Mary and trace them down.
I recently checked the phone book, and there are some 200 Weavers living in the greater Cinti area. I reckon one or two of them are related to my line. Also, I am aware of a Weaver family that originated in New York during colonial times and migrated to Hamilton/Ft Washington area. (documented in the New England Historical and Genealogy Society) I know this line is not related to me, however it would not suprise me to find some of their ancestors still about. I truly appreciate your quick response and assistance. Feel free to contact me at my home e-mail, Best Regards, Gordy

Dear Earl,
I just filtered for your name in the Hamilton County queries, and it appears you are the hot researcher of the area. I see you have assisted many other genealogists, and I am very glad to know people like you are available to lend a helping hand.
I really could use your expertise with this Weaver-McClanahan link in Hamilton Co. There's an Ohio death cert in 1916 for a Mary J. Weaver, it could be her. I can't find anything solid on George other than the Census. As I recall, I checked the 1910 and 1920 Ohio Census without success (looking for a George to fit). I may have have missed it. I think if they lived there, there were probably births and marriages in Hamilton Co pertaining to them. Maybe an obituary. I would think Ethel married before 1920. George may have died before 1910. Perhaps a will? I am at a disadvantage, I reside in North Kingstown, RI and do my study on the fly when on summer vacation to Ohio/Kentucky. I plan another trip just for genealogy this fall. Any help would appreciated.

I am well equipped to help anyone with Weaver research in Kentucky, I have a huge inventory of resources to search from, plus genealogist links across the nation.
I am also researching any and all Pendergest (variant spellings possible) family members in Ohio and Kentucky.
I just wanted to add that Mr. Stout's fine book is located on the Internet and I found what I think are my ancestors, Andrew Stout and Deborah Golden, who migrated with the New Jersey Settlement to the Butler/Warren/Hamilton County area in the early 1800s. Andrew Stout is listed as a Revolutionary War soldier from NJ on the Hamilton County, Ohio, Web site. He lived in Colerain Township. I haven't been able to find anything more about him, though. But this all ties in and thanks to everyone (Mandy and Barbara this time) who shares little bits of info!

If that person (phyllish2004) will contact me at AnnBergelt@aol.com, perhaps I can help with this search. I did find reference to one marriage -

Frank RETTING married Alice R. EYSTER 24 Jan 1875 - page 2, Cincinnati Freie Presse.

Hi Bob;

Thanks for the reply. I was not sure how much information would be available but you have been able to clear it up. I would still be interested in the exact marriage dates. I have a pretty good connection on the Winter-Degenhardt couple but I would appreciate better information on the Barbara Winter - Johan Haak marriage. Her age at the time of her marriage would help me determine if she is the Barbara Winter from Baden that I am looking for.

Thanks for your offer to look this information up.

Hi. I am looking for the death record of William Helson, who is my great great grandfather. He died after getting struck by lightning. I am thinking that the time frame is somewhere between 1904-1907. He left his wife, Alice Mershon Helson, with 5 young children.

Wow. Thank you very much! This was very helpful. Most of my research has been in the Chicago area, so I am unfamilar with this area of the country. There are 5 Helsons in this cemetery. Do you have any ideas on how to find out who the parents of the two children are: Helson Jr, W H - 10 months and Helson, Edna - 2.

I appreciate your help.

On January 2, 1790, general Arthur St. Clair, governor of the Northwest Territory, established Hamilton County and made Losantiville its county seat. Because St. Clair disliked the name of Losantiville, he changed its name to Cincinnati.

Cincinnati was named in honor of the Society of the Cincinnati, which was an organization of former officers of the American Revolution and of which St. Clair was a member. The society was named for the retired Roman dictator, Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, who left his farm to lead his Roman soldiers to victory, then returned to his farm. Aside from St. Clair, other members of this society were Israel’s father, Cornelius Ludlow, and President George Washington.

Although there were troubles with the Indians in the area during that time, Ludlow continued to survey Symmes Purchase. Ludlow had repeatedly asked for military protection while surveying but was denied.

In 1790, Ludlow built a blockhouse along Mill Creek, which he named Ludlow Station (present-day Cumminsville, Ohio). In 1796, Ludlow built a frame home, which many people called the Ludlow mansion.

Ludlow, who had obtained the rank of colonel, completed the survey in early 1792. On May 5, 1792, Ludlow sent his final report to secretary of the treasury Alexander Hamilton. In his report, Ludlow stated, “I now have the satisfaction to present to you the whole of the survey of the Ohio and part of the Miami purchases executed agreeably to instructions.”

When Colonel Israel Ludlow became the surveyor of Cincinnati he laid out the city's streets like those of Philadelphia which was, at that time, the nation's capital and largest city. He laid out the city's streets in straight lines with the river as the main axis. He even named many of the streets like those in Philadelphia, using numbers and native tree names. The main streets were 60 to 66 feet wide except for Broadway which was 100 feet wide. Originally, each square was divided into eight lots of 99 by 198 feet. The busiest streets in the first decade was Front and Water Streets which ran east-west along the river, and Broadway and Main streets which ran north-south.

CHANGING STREET NAMES

Broadway was first called Eastern Row.
Sycamore St. is called that because of a large sycamore tree that stood on the Ohio River bank at the foot of the street.
Walnut Street was originally called Cider Street.
Central Avenue was known as Western Row.
Reading Road was Hunt Street.
12th Street east of Main was called Abigail.
13th Street east of Main was called Woodward.
14th Street between Vine and and Main was called Allison.
Woodward Street was Franklin.
Yukon was Hanover Street
McMicken was Hamilton Road.
Lang Street was Locust Street.
Frintz was Oak Street.
Stonewall was Hamburg Street.
German Street to English Street.
Bismarck Street to Montreal Street.
Berlin Street to Woodrow Street.
Brunswick Street to Edgecliff Point.
Frankfort Street to Connecticut Street.
Hanover Street to Yukon Street.
Hapsburg Street to Merimac Street.
Schumann Street to Meredith Street.
Vienna Street to Panama Street
Humboldt Street to Taft Road.

Thank you for reply.

Nancy Kenrick was Irish immigrant to Portsmouth OH.

Only possible OH census record found for a Nancy Kenrick was 1860 census of Scioto County OH which includes a Nancy Kenrick, 21, b IR, as a domestic in household of George Johnson, b PA, lawyer, and family. Another domestic was Cecelia Ryan, 33, b IR

Did see the Cincinnati record you noted, but don't believe this is the same Nancy Kenrick Boswell.

Nancy Kenrick was born in Ireland ~1842, daughter of John and Katherine Kenrick.

Believe that Nancy married a John or William Boswell.
Possible that her given name could be Nancy Anna Kenrick( based on search of vital records for Boswell's with mother a Kenrick, and in Cincinnati).

Ohio vital records:
* William Boswell, b 17 Aug 1878, d 28 Aug 1949, Cincinnati, parents John Boswell and Anna Kenrick, single.
* Kate Boswell, b 1883/OH, d 1953/OH, parents John Boswell and Anna Kinrick, single.
* John Boswell, b 22Jun 1888, d 7 Apr 1950, Cincinnati, parents John Boswell and Anna Kenrick, single.
Informant was Mrs. Emma Turner.
* John William Boswell, b 10 Jun 1841, DC, d 15 Jun 1912, Cincinnati, widowed. Father George Boswell. If this Joh Boswell was husband of Anna Kenrick listed in previous records, Anna would have died before 1912.
Not confirmed this Anna Kenrick is our Nancy Kenrick, but possible.

Patrick Kenrick was born ~1839, Ireland, brother of Nancy Kenrick.Patrick md Sarah Rhodes in 1875. They had no children. Have details and obit on Patrick.

Another brother was Edward Kenrick, b ~1836, Ireland. He married Harriet Mulligan. Also have considerable information on Edward.
I checked a book I have from the historical society and the change from Abigail to 12th is listed as an "Early street name change" but there is no date. It doesn't mention the change from Woodward to 13th. It does suggest contacting the City of Cincinnati Dept of Transportation & Engineering, Engineering Division/Right of Way Management at 513-352-2404 for info about street name changes.

Re: Longview Hospital medical records

I have had no luck in getting my Aunts records from the hospital. She was put in Long-view by her sister Maudie Shelton in 1949 and died there in 1978 at the age of 45. I have never been able to get her information and have been told that none of the medical records are available any longer? Her name was Martha Louise Glover and I was also told that her body was donated to the department of anatomy in the university of Ohio, no luck in getting her records Either from them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Does anyone know what year the street names in downtown Cincy were changed? I'm specifically looking for info on when Abagail St. was changed to 12th Street and when Woodward St. was changed to 13th Street. (I know some street names changed around the time of WWI due to anti-German sentiment, but see no reason for the name change of the above streets.) Thanks.

I don't know if this connects, but a Rettig family was in White Oak, which is a suburb of Cincinnati, in the 1800's. There was a Joseph Rettig, who may have been related to the Joseph Retting/Rettig you are looking for. If you are searching, White Oak is in Colerain Township, on the west side of Cincinnati. There is a Father Rettig who teaches at Elder High School in Cincinnati, who is a descendant of this family.
