We are looking for any information on Ashford Dennis, born
about 1824 in Claysville, Guernsey County, who married
Mary Jane Hill or Mary Jane Ball (we are still uncertain
but lean strongly towards Hill) daughter of W M Hill and
Ziza Ball (names provided by older family members and not
documented). Mary Jane was born about 1829 in Claysville,
Guernsey County. Ashford Dennis appeared as head of household in 1850 County census and he served during the Civil War. We would appreciate any information on Union Army regiments or units formed in Guernsey or Muskingum County. Ashford had nine children, Evaline (1850), Liston (1852), Thomas(1855), Charles (1857) Harriett (1860), Lucy (1866), Joseph Austin (husband's ggfather - b. 1869), John (1872) and Amelia (1876). All were born in Claysville, Guernsey County. Joseph Austin Dennis moved to Illinois as a young man, married there, but we believe he returned to Ohio as his daughter, Ruth, (husband's gmother) married a man from Guernsey County, Clark Valentine.
Christina Webster, Died may 19th, 1903, Aged 91.
She was a daughter of Henry Beymer and Elizabeth McMullen Beymer, who were pioneer setters at Washington this county, and was born in Washington August 21st, 1812, and was married at the same place April 12, 1831 by Peter Umstot, Esq.; to Bateman Webster, of Somerset County, Penn. After their marriage they made Norwich, Muskingum County, their home for many years.
Bateman Webster was a soldier. They both became members of the M. E. Church and their home became a stopping place for the Methodist itinerants of that early day.
They removed to Cambridge in 1862 and united by certificate with the church in April during the pastorate of Rev. W.B. Watkins. Bateman Webster died April 19, 1873. He built and resided in the house which was removed to give place to the Colonial block. Since his death the widow resided on North Sixth street. They were childless.
Sister Webster, although having but little education was naturally a very intelligent woman, and a well worn family Bible attest her study of the word of life.
She had many strange characteristics, and much disposed to fault finding, especially with the younger class, and as she grew older was disposed to think that the boys and girls that passed her residence, were purposely annoying her. But with her "after life's fitful fever she rest well."
She was the youngest daughter of her father's family. Her father died at the age of 90 years. Of the family all are deceased except a brother, Noah Beymer, of Washington. Interment in the South Cemetery, funeral conducted by Dr. R.B. Pope, Wednesday at 4 o'clock from the M.E. Church.

J. W. Hare, of Quaker City, died Tuesday, June 3, 1902. He had been in ill health for some time past and was taken to Columbus and put in the care of eminent specialists, who upon surgical investigation discovered a cancerous condition of the liver. He very much desired to return home to see his children before death and on Tuesday accompanied by Mrs. Hare and Dr. G.W. Jones started homeward. He grew suddenly worse as they came on the train and soon after noon, when between Newark and Zanesville, he died.
Mr. hare was a son, of Rev. John Hare, a pioneer M. E. preacher who resided in Summerfield, where Mr. Hare was born. His father died leaving a widow and a large family of children of which J. W. Hare was one of the youngest. He grew to manhood in and near Summerfield, where he married and soon after went into business at Spencer's Station, afterwards in Quaker City.
When a boy he made his home for some years with Mr. and Mrs. G. Trott, who having no children of their own, assisted young Hare, whom they loved as their own child, to start in business. In all his dealings he was the soul of honor and held the confidence of all his customers to a remarkable degree.
He was scurrilously honest and always courteous, Christian gentlemen, a member of the M.E. Church for many years.
The family consists of his wife, Miss Grace, who is deputy probate clerk in the office of Hon. W. H. Gregg, John, Nellie and George, who are left to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father. Thursday 5 June 1902 Cambridge Jeffersonian Cambridge Ohio.

Three brothers are living viz: William and Andrew, of Cambridge, and Newton and three sisters: Mrs. Mary McCoffery and Mrs. Carrie Harris, of Baltimore, Md., and Mrs. Thomas Cochran, of Bellaire, Ohio.
Dr. Downar was a kind hearted generous man, exceedingly kind and indulgent to his family and amiable and gentle toward all his acquaintances.
Benjamin W. Wilson

Looking for information on Benjamin W. Wilson and family who left Guernsey Co, Ohio for Jo Daviess Co, IL in about 1836-1839. His first wife is supposed to have been Sarah Headley. They were living in Richland Twp, Guernsey Co, OH in 1830. They are alleged to have had a large family and some of his children may have stayed in Ohio. He was born in Randolph Co, VA and it is unknown where he first married to Sarah Headley, but the marriage is thought to be in 1806. Does anyone have the exact date and place? Sarah (Headley) Wilson died in about 1823-1826 and he remarried Priscilla Smith. Does anyone know her parents? Or the exact date and place of the marriage? Does anyone know the date of Sarah (Headley) Wilson's death and where she is buried? Benjamin and Sarah are supposed to have had a large family. The father of Benjamin W. Wilson was William Wilson, Jr whose wife was Mary Sarah Friend. They lived in Hardy Co, VA (Now WV), served in the Revolutionary War and died in Noble Co, Ohio in 1851. Would be most interested in contacting anyone with knowledge of this family or anyone who may descend from this Wilson line.
Ron Moore
rmoore@cybergate.com

He was carried from the field to the temporary hospital where his limb was amputated, three different operations being necessary, and finally was sent to the hospital at Cincinnati. Word of his removal to the Cincinnati hospital was received by relatives here, and arrangements for his honorable discharge and removal home were at once made. The late Dr. J.P. Tingle went to Cincinnati and accompanied the wounded man home. Here with careful nursing and the best of medical attention he recovered his strength.
November 15th, 1870, Mr. Hammond was married to Ella Simons and to them were born seven children, three of whom, two sons, John and Howard, and one daughter Ella are dead. After serving time as clerk of the courts he was again elected justice of the peace, and held this office until the day of his death. Mr. Hammond was a member of the Cambridge First U.P. Church, uniting while yet a young man, and always lived an upright Christian life.
For about twenty years up to the time of the building of the Colonial theatre Mr. Hammond assisted by his sons, conducted the only opera house in Cambridge. Almost year ago he became ill with the grip which left him in a weaken condition and since that he had been in poor health. Now and then, since his first illness he was able to leave his room, and during pleasant weather was seen on the streets greeting his many comrades and friends, but gradually those trips became less frequent, until about three months ago he took to his bed.
The funeral services will be held at his late home on South 8th Street Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by his pastor, Rev. J.W. Ashwood, of the First U.P. Church, assisted by other ministers of the city. The services will be under the auspices of the G.A.R.
Post Only Obit for Margaret Temple Smith 1898

Death has again visited out community and taken from our midst a kind and loving wife and mother, Margaret Smith, whose death occurred at 3 o'clock a.m. January 7, 1898 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. J. Law, near Middlebourne, Guernsey County, Ohio. The deceased was 78 years and 19 days of age, she was surrounded by her children when bade to succumb by deaths never failing blow. She seemed to enjoy the best of health until within the last three months, when the infirmities of old age began to make their appearance.
The deceased was the second daughter of William and Biddy Temple, who came to this country from Ireland in 1819 and located in New York City, and was born December 18, 1819; she came to Guernsey County sometime during the decade between 1830 and 1840, and was married to John Smith, June 20, 1840, who with ten children, forty-one grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive her. Their children are given in order of birth; William Smith, Mary E. Wherry, Sarah J. Henderson, Elizabeth Smith, who died in infancy, Margaret S. Carter, Geo. M. Smith, Emma Spencer, Etta Doyal, Amanda Law, John F. Smith and Nannie Law. Shortly after their marriage they located on a farm on Pultney Ridge, where they continued to live until last spring, since then they have been temporarily living with their daughters. She was glad to see her children all married. She was a very consistent Christian having united with the U. P. Church at Sand Hill over thirty years ago, and her life was truly consecrated to God and His services, and her chief aim in life was kindness toward others. By her death a kind and loving mother is gone and an affectionate wife is missed, whose noble acts and deeds of kindness while living, has left for her a monumental record which will perpetuate her name to future generations.
The funeral services were conducted Sunday at 10 o'clock at her daughter's home by Rev. L. N. White after which the remains, followed by a long line of relatives and friends, were taken for interment to the Fairview Cemetery
The relatives have full sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement.
Thursday 13 January 1898 The Republican Press Cambridge Ohio.
Post Only obit for Winfield Scott Stone 1897

Died at his home in Claysville this county November 10, 1897, after a few hours illness of cerebral hemorrhage.
He was a son of Marshal Stone, deceased, who was one of the most prominent farmers in western Guernsey County. Scott Stone, as he was familiarly known, was born near Claysville thirty years ago. In 1894 he commenced clerking in the store of Francis Johnson where by his genteel, obliging and refined disposition he made many friends.
September 12, 1895, he married Miss Emma Burris who with a little daughter Bernadine, aged 17 months survive him. After his marriage he went into business for himself, purchasing the general store of F. C. Shively and was conducting this business in a successful manner at the time of his death.
In politics he was ardent Republican. He was township clerk at the time of his death and had he lived would have been appointed post master at Claysville. He was a member of the Claysville M. E. Church and was active in all movements intended to build up the church and was active in all movements intended to build up the community. His sudden death was a serve shock and a sad affliction to his wife and little daughter who will never know the care of a kind and indulgent father.
The sympathy of the entire community and many friends in other parts of the county is extended. May God bless and care for them and fulfill in this case his promise to be a husband to the widow and a father to the fatherless.
Funeral services were conducted in the Claysville M. E. Church, Friday at 10 a.m. by his pastor Rev. T. I. McRae. After services at the church the remains were followed by a large concourse of friends to their last resting place in the Cumberland Cemetery.
Death has closed the earthly career of Scott Stone at an early age, in the mist of his usefulness but his short life has been one of excellence and worthy of emulation.
Thursday 18 November 1897 The Republican Press Cambridge Ohio.

James Hannum in Guernsey Co. between 1828 and 1851

Seeking any information on a James Hannum, wife Jane (Baird) who farmed in Guernsey County Ohio somewhere between 1828 and prior to 1851. The family relocated to Guernsey Co. from Jefferson Co. Indiana and later moved to Pittsburgh, PA. More than likely, some of their 9 sons would have been born during these years in Guernsey: John, Alexander, Samuel, William, James, Joseph, Finley, Hugh, and Thomas. The last two boys are recorded as deceased in a family history with no information on them at all. Highly possible they were victims of infant mortality and could have died in Guernsey County. Any information on the above would be deeply appreciated.

About two months ago he was confined to his bed and for the past two weeks had been entirely helpless. There was no suffering, no complaint.

Mrs. Francis Ann Pratt (nee) Willson was born in Maryland on the 10th day of October 1822; died on the 27th day of March, 1906, of apoplexy, aged eighty-three years, six months and seventeen days.
Funeral services conducted in the Birds Run Baptist Church by Rev. Thomas. Mrs. Willson had been a consistent member of the Baptist church ever since she was thirteen years old, having united with the Brisly Fork Baptist Church in Madison township.
She was united in marriage in 1844, who preceded her to the better world eighteen years ago. To this union was born seven children. Those living are; Henry Willson of Birds Run; Thomas of Canal Dover; Edward of Cambridge; Martha and Mitchell of Adams Township; Rachel Goodie of Afton, Iowa. All were present at the funeral except Rachel Goodie. She was borne to the tomb by her six grandsons, caring their dear old grandmother to her last resting place in the clay.
We are pleased to know that her old age was spent in quiet retirement; free form the cares and anxieties of life; that a useful career was crowned by a happy and contented end; at the extreme age which she attained her death could not have been unexpected. We did not realize how dearly we loved her.
Darling mother, thou hast left us here,
Thy loss we deeply feel
But it's God that has bereft us:
He can all our sorrows heal.
Thursday 12 April 1906 Guernsey Times Cambridge Ohio.

Looking for info on Abrams Family and Harmony Cemetery in RD1 Cambridge

My grandparents were Gus Abrams and Emma (Vititoe) Abrams
They were married in Jackson Co. in early 1900's and moved to Guernsey about the same time. I'm guessing because of work in the coal mines. Gus was killed in an exposion at McFarland Mine in 1942 (anyone ever see any info about McFarland Mine?). Gus' parents were Henry and Agnes (Monk) Abrams. Agnes died in Guernsey Co. in 1920's but I don't have an exact date. Trying to find info on Henry and Agnes' parents. Also, anyone ever try to locate records from Harmony Cemetery in RD 1 Guernsey? I have many Abrams family buried there (including an infant brother). Not sure exactly who to contact. Thanks for any input!!

I am coming to Guernsey County this weekend and wonder if anyone can give me the exact location of Sand Hill School/Church (same building). I believe it's on Pultney Ridge Road in Millwood Township, and I think it's at an intersection, but I don't know what the crossroad is. I do not know whether the building still stands. In my ancestors' day, it was a Presbyterian church.

Obit for Kate Secrest Dickerson 1905 (Post only)

                Pioneer Gone

Aunt Kate Dickerson, died yesterday noon at the home of her son, George Dickerson, in Derwent, aged 90 years and 13 days. She had been gradually declining in health for some time, but was reasonably well for one of her extreme years, so that her death is attributed to "old age" only.
Catherine Secrest Dickerson was one of the thirteen children of John and Sarah Secrest, pioneer settlers who came from Virginia in the early years of the last century and settled where Hartford now stands. Nearly all of them lived beyond the biblical period of the score years and ten, but Mrs. Dickerson survived them all. She was born October 29, 1815, and was married to Asa Dickerson in 1836.
To this union were born four children, as follows; George, of Derwent; Mrs. Edward Spaid, of Hartford; John who died a few years ago, and Samuel, who died infancy. At her death she leaves two children, nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson, Byron Albert Wycoff, thus making before her death five generations in the line.
Mr. Dickerson died about eighteen years ago and for while his widow lived alone, but for the past twelve years, she made her home with her son George and family in Derwent, who cared for her patiently during her declining years.
Aunty Katy, as she was know to everyone, was a strong character and fine patiently during her declining years.
The funeral services will be held at the M.E. Church, Hartford, tomorrow at 10 o'clock. Rev. Humble of Pleasant City will have charges of the obsequies. Burial will be made in the Hartford Cemetery.
Thursday 16 November 1905 The Weekly Guernsey Times Cambridge Ohio

I would be interested in information on any of the soldiers serving the 30th Ohio. Thanks,
David Hayes

I am looking for any information on Rebecca A West (1826-1865). She was the wife of Lester St.Clair (1819-1895) both of Guernsey county around the Spencer/Cumberland area.
She had 9 children, but died. Lester married Priscilla Fox. In Priscilla's obit. it said she was a mother to all of Lester's children. Lester and Rebecca's son David moved to Florida. His daughter was my grandmother Rebecca Jane St.Clair. I am named for David.
Have not found anything on Rebecca except the information I have. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The Guernsey county genealogical people gave me tons of St.Clair stuff which was really great, but even they don't have anything on Rebecca.

Thanks,
David Beers

Married Joseph Albert Voorhes. Cousins married cousins. Father was Zera Albert Voorhies and her mother was Mary Hawkins per her death certificate. She died June 15th 1950.
I can trace my Voorhies ancestors back to the original three in 1830. However , I cant find the connection for my Hawkins in the early census records.
Betty Shinns early birth records for Guernsey County records Zera Albert and a May E Hawkins had a child on August 15, 1880.
Any help would be appreciated or suggestions you may have would be welcomed.
I know she is buried in Old Washington cemetery but no information is available on her tombstone and as I understand the records were destroyed by a fire.
Thank you in advance for any assistance.
Regards
Mary Voorhies

I recently found a link in my family to the Beymers. After being intimidated by the large number of them in Guernsey Co. OH, I was hoping I might someone who had been researching the name longer to tell me if they know of the marriages of Susanna And Elizabeth Miller to two of the Beymer boys in the 1830's and if the boys were brothers.
Also a Catherine Beymer married Jacob Umstott.
Am looking for information on two churches that were in Kimbolton around the time the township was established. They were the United Presbyterian Church and The Methodist Episcopal Church. I know that the Presbyterian church was there in the 1800's and beleive it was the first church. At some point around 1947 it was closed. That left just the Methodist Church.

If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

I am looking for James Arnold, who married Metilda Byrd and the names of their children.I know one of their sons was George Albert Arnold, who was born in 1856 in Fairview. He married Lydia Jane Robinson who was born in Belmont Co. I believe all of these families lived in Fairview, Guernsey County, Ohio. I believe James might have been born in Belmont County, and his parents might have been Putnam Arnold and Sarah Haines. Metilda Byrd was the daughter of George Byrd and O'Brae Shipley and was born in Fairview, Guernsey Co., Ohio. I am really in need of information on this family.
