Jonathan Gilson, of Center Township, died Wednesday 7, 1902, at the home of William Eagleton Esq. He had gone to husk corn and after hauling a sled load of fodder into the barn took the horses to water. While at the trough he called to his boy, who was helping him and Mr. Eagleton, rushed to him. He said he was blind and was taken speedily into the house at Eagleton's and Dr. O. J. Alpin sent for. At two o'clock in the afternoon and before the doctor arrived he passed away without recovering consciousness, and his remains were taken to his home near by.
Mr. Gilson was a well known colored man and esteemed as an industrious and good citizen.
He was a good soldier in the Fifth U.S. colored troops, and a member of the Cambridge Grand Army Post, which sent a delegation of pall bears to the funeral which leaves the home Friday at 10 o'clock. The detail of six comrades meet at A.K. Broom's store at 8 o'clock. Burial in Northwood Cemetery where others join.
Comrade Gibson was a son of Nero Gilson, who gained celebrity as the first colored voter in Guernsey County, and whose one vote elected Tipton to the legislature over Lawrence.
