I find a transcribed marriage between this man and a Mary Dunaver on 3 Jul 1862 in Guernsey Co. try as I might I cannot find them in the census. I've tried soundexing, searching with just a given name, and several other tricks.
does anyone have access to the originals and can you tell me if the name is indeed Flender?
I am looking for Mary Dunifer (born Dunheiffer) b. 21 May 1843 in Cambridge. I have her twin sister Martha K. and most of her information (just missing what her middle name was). Martha is easy to research, but Mary is elusive. I'd appreciate anything, even a tombstone for Mary at the City cemetery...when the weather improves, of course...

Looks they could be in Radnor Township of Delaware County in 1880:

William Flender's age is given as 28, and his wife Mary as 33, rather than the probable ages of 37 or so that you provide, but this wouldn't be the first time that the census had inaccurate information.

thank you. her father's birthplace of Wales brought me up short, so will check the rest of the census...the next door neighbor is a Bunford from Wales. definitely not a Welsh name...definitely them in 1910 Toledo, their middle initials are with them. still says her father was born in Wales. her twin sister gives her father's place of birth as Bavaria. that messes with my head. 2 daughters, may be adopted? they are born after 1880. both are full adults and single.
ok, if the 1900 census is anywhere near correct, (and it's so faint the transcriber had difficulty) this William and Mary married in 1880. I'm asking for someone on Roots list to check somewhere other than Ancestry and transcribe it for me to be certain. nothing quite fits with this couple.

William M. Flender m. Mary E. Thomas, so they aren't the ones I'm looking for. maybe they're in the early death records. now her father being born in Wales makes sense, she isn't Martha's sister.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about their father's birthplace. In the 1850 census he (Jacob Donheffer/Dunheiffer) is listed as coming from Pennsylvania. But of course, all of his children are, too, though later they say Ohio. And in 1880, his son Jesse says he was born in Ireland, as does his other son Edward (apparently the E.R. Dunifer in Coles Co., IL).

It might be possible to confuse Ireland with Wales, but who knows. Perhsps her husband died, and she remarried.

yes, it's been a struggle, especially with the name apparently badly miss-spelled in America. the best I've come up with is Tonhoefer or something near that.

the confusion with the surname is when it changed from Dunhieffer to Duniver. Duniver's a very common Irish name. but Jacob isn't an Irish name. well, I'll need to investigate that avenue, though I'm not looking forward to another commone name in his tree. he's got so many of them.

yes, that is Edward in IL. he eludes me in 1870, I have all of his census except that one.
