I have been trying various web-sites to find the 1850 census for Geauga County but cannot locate one; why? I do not have access to research libraries where I live, so have to rely upon internet for research. I want to find Seger in Huntsburg, Ohio 1850.. I have a mess I am trying to untangle and am hoping the 1850 census will help.

I have just finished my overhaul of the Geauga County Schools page on my website.

http://www.oldohioschools.com/geauga_county.htm

I am still missing quite a few pictures of some of the old schools as well as some dates and locations. Please check out the new page and let me know what you think or if you can help with any other information. It now loads much faster and is more user-friendly for people wanting to only view a certain county.

In Parkman, Geauga County, four members of the family of Erastus Bierce, died within six weeks. First Frank, September 20th., aged 16; Arthur, aged 6; Mrs. Bierce next; and last a boy of 16 months -- all of typhoid fever. The knowledge of the death of the first two children was carefully kept from the mother, and yet, says the correspondent of the Geauga Republican, October 21st., she knew herself to be dying, and said "Frank and Arthur, come and take me away", and soon was gone. Were they there in her sight, waiting for her? or was her mind wandering? or does God disclose the New Jerusalam to the dying, to cheer them through the shades of Death!

source: Shelby (OH) Independent News: 05 December 1872, Vol. 5, No. 6

Stephen Northrop

I believe there is an error in stating that the following man served in the Rev. War:

Stephen Northrop
born 22 Jan 1759 Ridgefield, Fairfield Co., CT
died 17 Oct 1831, Munson, Geauga Co., OH
married 1st Betsey; married 2nd Deborah Robinson

I descend from Stephen through his son, Amaziah Northrop. I have been researching Stephen Northrop's family, including his children from both marriages. I planned to apply to the DAR but now believe that the information about his military service is incorrect.

In the book, Raccoon Brigade, Soldiers of the Revolution in Geauga County, OH, by Jeannette Grosvenor, Stephen is noted on pages 468-470. It states that Stephen Northrop "served as private in the 9th Connecticut regiment". He is listed as serving in the "5th Connecticut Regiment, Col. David Waterbury, 9th Company, Capt. Nehemiah Beardsley. He enlisted as a private 16 May 1775 and was discharged 11 Dec. 1775". In 1926, Stephen Northrop was identified as a Soldier of the American Rev. and later a gravestone was placed at Fowlers Mill Cemetery, Sec. 3, Lot 37. His gravestone reads:

Stephen Northrop
Connecticut QM SGT
9th Co. 5th Regiment
Revolution
22 Jan. 1759-17 Oct. 1831

An Amy E. K. Wheeler (Mrs. Silas C.), #155361, applied (before 1928) through the Nathan Perry Chapter as a descendant of this Stephen Northrup.

In my research into Stephen's family, I received a copy of the DAR application (before 1928) for another descendant, through his daughter Nancy. In this application it states that Stephen served in the Rev. War in the 6th Regiment, Dutchess Co., NY.

I ordered Stephen Northrop's Rev. War Pension Record and Military Record. I requested for service from both NY and CT. None was found. I believe that Stephen is not the Stephen Northrop of the 9th Co. 5th Regiment CT.

I have been able to find 3 Stephen Northrop/Northrup's who served in NY or CT as follows:

~ 9th Company CT, Col. Waterbury Regiment, Captain Nehemiah Beardsley
~ Westchester County Milita, New York, 4th Regiment, Col. Thaddeus Crane, Capt. David Pardee, (was "Quartermaster Sergeant")
~ Dutchess Co. NY 6th Regiment, Col. Morris Graham, Captain Richard Sackett's Company

I ordered the Rev. War Pension Record for another Stephen Northrup,
Born April 1785, South Salem, Westchester Co., NY
Died 24 Sept 1841, Sullivan, Madison Co., NY
wife Rhoda

This Stephen Northrup, (born 1785) is the man who served in the 5th CT Regiment. His pension records also state he served several times over numerous years, including under Capt. David Pardee and Capt. Richard Sackett. This Stephen Northrup served in all three of the above mentioned military company's from CT and NY.

Michael came to the US in 1890 with his mother, brother and sister first settling in East Liverpool. Prior to 1900 Michael moved to Chardon where he married Hannah an Irish woman whose maiden name I don't know. They had three kids, Mary born abt 1907, William born abt 1912 and Michael born about 1915. When Michael died in 1934 he was a policeman. Any information or help would be appreciated.

Hello,
I am working on a project for my Master's Degree documenting old schools in Ohio. My website is www.oldohioschools.com

This site is for the schools built after the one-room era. I am looking for pictures and information on any schools from the late 1800s through the mid 1900s.

The categories are :

Gone- Schools which have been razed

Abandoned- Schools which are closed and not used for any other purpose

Endangered- Schools which are closing soon or have recently closed and likely to become abandoned or razed

Retired- Schools which are not used as public classroom buildings but serve in some other capacity (apartments, offices, etc)

Functional- Schools still in use as classroom buildings

** I am in need of a PHOTO of the Russell Township School in Russell Center that is or has been razed recently. Does anyone know when that building was built?

I would appreciate any updates to the information I already have posted, such as dates and locations, as well as any pictures or new information ton post. Please contact me at aaronturner@Neo.rr.com if you can help!

Grove A.D. & Achsah Eddy-Streeter, Painesville

Achsah Eddy married Grove A.D. Streeter. Both were born in Vermont in the 1790's, but by 1820 were living in the Painesville, Geauga, Ohio area. There are many Eddy family members that settled into this same area, and also at least 1 brother of Grove Streeter; Anson Streeter, who settled near Ashtabula. Anson also had a son named Grove A. Streeter, presumably after his brother Grove A.D.

It is rumored that Grove and Achsah Eddy Streeter had 10 or 11 children. Later, after Grove's passing in 1837, Achsah Eddy remarried one Titus Doolittle, also of this same area.

What I am looking for is anyone who knows anything about the names of the children of Grove A.D. and Achsah Eddy-Streeter. It appears that the first two were boys, as they show up on the 1820 Painesville Census with 2 young boys in the home. These 10 or 11 Streeter children would be born between 1815 and 1837. There were simply too many children for there to be no record left of them in this area of Ohio.

Any help would be dearly appreciated.

Gary

Silas STAGE in Newbury Geauga Co abt 1840

I have recently found the family of Silas STAGE b abt 1775 in NY and wife, Phebe b abt 1780 NY who are buried in Newbury Ctr Cemetery in Geauga Co NY. It looks like this might be the same Silas STAGE family who was in Wolcott, Wayne Co (formerly Seneca Co), NY in 1820 and 1830.
possible children (but not proven) are:

-Elijah

-John F b abt 1802 NY m Marietta DAVIS 1860 in Geauga Co (John is buried in Newbury Ctr Cemetery) May have been married before in NY.

-James R

-Ann m Harrison RUSSELL Oct 1843 in Geauga Co

-Phebe m Orman TROWBRIDGE May 1837 in Geauga Co

-Mary m S.W. LARAWAY Nov 1851 in Geauga Co

-Nelson D m 1) Martha A BAKER Nov 1851 in Geauga Co
2) Mary Ann LUTHER Jan 1865

Does anyone recognize this family? I am wondering (pure speculation at this point) if this could be the parents of Greta Stage b 1811 who m Daniel Smith in Wayne Co NY in 1831. Their older children were b in Wolcott, before they moved to Sodus/Huron in Wayne Co, NY.
Mary Ann was born in Seneca County New York on March 21, 1820 and died Aug. 18, 1878 in Dover twp Ohio. The children of Philander and Mary Ann Clark, Lemar, Amaziah, Leander and Harrison Edgar were born in Livingston, NY, while Martha, and Mary were born in Lake, Co. Ohio. Mary Ann's parents Charles and Susannah (Harrison) Rolison were born in Sussex, Co. New Jersey in 1780 and on 12/27/1782, respectively. The information I'm search for is the name of Philander Clark's parents--we think they were born and lived for sometime in Conn. Philander had a sister named Eunice and a brother named Amaziah all born in New York.

1870 U.S. Census for Geauga County

I was looking up my ancestor's in Geauga County in the 1870 U.S. census and I found them twice! Once with the enumeration date of July 14, 1870 and one with the enum. date of March 21, 1870 (the zero actually looks like it is crossed out with a line) and my ancestors are all stated as being a year older than they were on the July 14 1870 census. Does any one have any info. on this matter? Was the 1870 Census taken twice in Geauga county? And if so why?
Thanks for any info!
My ggg-grandfather and mother (Albert O. Hayes, Lois Hayes) and gg-grandfather (William Hayes) are buried in Monville Cemetery in lot 19. The cemetery map shows that the lot is full, but no headstones are there. The Pioneer and General History of Geauga Cty. lists Lois Hayes as being a charter member in the United Methodist Church, which is right across the street from the cemetery. When I visited the grave in May, the church was now a private residence. Does anyone have any idea of where the church records were transferred to, or where I can start seaching for them? The Hayes families started to settle in Burton in 1800-1801. Albert should be the son of Eli Hayes of Burton, and Lois (nee Young) daughter of William Young (I think from Ct.) It looks like Seth Hayes in Burton and Joseph in Burton are the brothers of Eli Hayes. I am also searching for the marriage license for Albert and Lois. Any info on the church or the Hayes family would greatly be appreciated. I have some records of the family and am very willing to share.

Roxie Swanson
wvswanson@aol.com

Roxie Swanson
wvswanson@aol.com

Horatio Nelson Pratt married Sarah (Maria or Mariah) Abell in Troy 1 April 1840. They relocated to Kent County Michigan in 1852. I am trying to prove her parents. Have several clues that she was the daughter of Joseph Abell d. 23 Nov 1844 in Troy and Polly Pool d. 25 Sep 1868 in Troy. Polly was the daughter of Jepthah Pool a Rev. War soldier.

Horatio descends from a long line of well researched Pratts. I have quite a bit of info on the Pratt line if anyone needs help.

John Atwood family in Parkman, 1840

John Atwood was born in 1805 in Vermont, lived in the Genesee County, NY, area until about 1834, and was living in Ohio in 1840. The 1840 census of Parkman, Geauga, lists a John Atwood, but I do not know for sure if he's the right one. Does anyone have any other information about Atwoods living in Geauga County around 1840?

John's wife was named Allice (or Alice) and five of their children, Harriet A., Charles, Maria L., James and Frank, were born in Ohio. The family was living in Wayne County, Michigan, by 1850.

Thanks.
