I am planning a trip to the area and would like to know where I might find microfilms of local newspapers for the years 1850-1900. I tried the Gallipolis Public Library but kept getting an error message when I tried to search their catalog.

Zink, Ingles Inquiry

I have the 1840 census of Gallia Co with a John Zink listed. In 1850, Gallia Co., Perry Twp is a widowed, Sr. John Zink, born in VA, with 3 children, James Madison, Sarah and William Zink.

Right next door is John Zink Jr., born in VA, married to Elizabeth Ingles, also born in VA, with two children, James and William M. (listed here as what appears to be Thomas??).

The Senior John was born about 1792 and John Jr. was born about 1822.

I have information on Wm. M. Zink, including his death certificate, which lists his parents and verifies they were born in VA.

I also know that James Madison Zink, son of John Zink Sr., married and moved to Indiana.

I was hoping that someone would have additional information about these families. If you can assist, I would love to hear from you.

Rescued Photo, KINDER Surname, Gallia Co. OH Possible Location

As a hobby, I rescue old photos from antique shops and auctions. I picked up a photo of a young lady, identified on the back as Miss Addie Kinder & dated Jan-10-93 (1893).

There is no other information, such as location etc. She appears to be 20 or so. I did some checking on the US Federal Census and in 1880 there was an Addie J. Kinder living in Gallia Co. Ohio, born 1873. While I can't be certain this is the same Addie Kinder as in the photo, she's the only one in the census, that would fit that age in the photo.

My goal is to locate family to send this original treasure to. For details on how to obtain it, contact me at:
digginroots@yahoo.com

Kathy
I am trying to locate some information about Margaret mcAllister who died in the State Hospital in Gallipolis 1935. Does anyone on the board know how to get info from them? what paper would an obituary have been in? She was buried in Columbus by family but the only info I can find is she died from being smothered. I would think that even in 1935 someone who was murdered in the state hospital would get some attention.

Thank you for any help
Debbie

This is to invite you to visit my family history site, West Virginia Memories -- http://wva.homestead.com/index.html I created the site to share photographs and information about southern West Virginia families including the Smith family of Abraham, Raleigh County, W.Va.

The Ohio connection is through Emma Catherine Biars who married George Washington Smith Jr. on Aug. 5, 1908. Emma was born July 20, 1878, in Harrison Township, Gallia County, Ohio, to Gustava “Gus” Biars (1850/1916) and his wife Catharine "Kate" Krause (about 1852/1932). Alternative spellings of Gus’s name include: Gustaphe Beiar, Gustav Bear, Gustif Biar, and Gustas Biar. Kate’s first name was spelled as Catharine and Cathrine and her last name, Kraus, Krause and Croush.

I have a few pictures of the Biars and some information. If you have photos and information to share, I would appreciate it.
Searching for information on death dates, burial location, and descendants of Solon Hayes (b. abt 1810, CT) and Lucinda Watkins (b. abt 1814, NC). Both Solon and Lucinda died between 1880 and 1900. Solon and Lucinda married 1833 in Gallia county, OH, and are found in 1840 and 1850 census in Springfield township, Gallia county, OH. In 1860, 1870, and 1880 census they are found in Salem Center, Meigs county, OH. They had about 10 children, but most apparently died before having families. Only children I can find who married are: 1. Philena (born abt 1838), who married FNU McMillen. They had three children (Lucinda, Henry, and Emerson McMillen); and 2. Franklin (born abt 1853), who married Maria Grimes abt 1878. They had four or more children (Maud, Solon, Frank, and Florence Hayes). There is information that a Frank Hayes married Rosie abt 1904 in Meigs county but I’m not certain this is the same family.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Hello,
I am working on a project for my Master's Degree documenting old schools in Ohio. My website is www.oldohioschools.com

This site is for the schools built after the one-room era. I am looking for pictures and information on any schools from the late 1800s through the mid 1900s.

The categories are :

Gone- Schools which have been razed

Abandoned- Schools which are closed and not used for any other purpose

Endangered- Schools which are closing soon or have recently closed and likely to become abandoned or razed

Retired- Schools which are not used as public classroom buildings but serve in some other capacity (apartments, offices, etc)

Functional- Schools still in use as classroom buildings

** Does anyone know if the old Gallipolis High School is still standing or not (see attached picture). If it is, what year was it built? What street is it on? or When was it closed? When was it razed?

I would appreciate any updates to the information I already have posted, such as dates and locations, as well as any pictures or new information ton post. Please contact me at aaronturner@Neo.rr.com if you can help!

He was in the 1840 and 1850 censuses. He lived near Harrison Wood and William Wood--but wasn't their brother.

I am looking for Peter J.L. Roberts, born July 14, 1793 in New York (the town is questionable). Most of his relatives settled in northern Ohio but I have been unable to find him there. I did find information that shows he died on September 21, 1875 and is buried in Fairview Cemetery, Gallia, Ohio. I am trying to verify this. Any and all information gleaned from cemetery records would be very helpful. In addition, if someone has access to marriage records, I would be interested in knowing if he married in that area and his wife's name. If he shows up in any census' that would be great too. Thank you so much.

Institutions/hospitals circa. 1927?

I am wondering if anyone can tell me if there were any tb hospitals, or mental institutions or something along those lines in Gallia County around 1927. I have a great aunt, Nannie K. Davis, who was never mentioned to me growing up, I have only just discovered her. According to family legend, she was possibly mentally handicapped or had some kind of illness. She lived in Miami and Madison counties but I believe I have found her death certificate in Gallia County in 1927 -- I am waiting for it to arrive in the mail. It is very strange and I am trying to figure out if it is her, then why would she have been so far away from home in Gallia County? Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kathy

Searching for parents and relatives of SAMUEL LEWIS DOB ca 1800 PA
1. Samuel Lewis and his family are listed in the 1850 census for Twp 9N IE, Knox, Illinois; Roll: m432_113; Page; 324. Samuel gave his birthplace as Pennsylvania and age as 50. Nancy, his wife, gave her age as 35 and her place of birth as Ohio.

2. The family had 10 members: Samuel, Nancy and eight children. The eldest three children were stated to have been born in Ohio. Cynthia, aged 16, Samuel, aged 15 and Martha, aged 12 were said to have been born in Ohio while Joseph, aged 9, was said to have been born in Illinois.

3. The elder Samuel Lewis does not appear in the 1860 census, but his wife Nancy and their youngest child, Samantha, do appear on the1860 census for Orange Twp, Knox, Illinois; Roll: m653_195; Page: 682; Image: 348. I suspect that the elder Samuel died after the 1850 census, but I have no evidence to sustain that belief.

4. Cynthia Lewis married John A. Buffington on 23 Oct 1853 Knoxville in Knox County, Illinois. They had a family of ten children all of whom were born in Knox County, Illinois.

5. I am interested in the relatives of Samuel Lewis, ca DOB 1800, to determine any connection between Lewis and Hannah Buffington, ca DOB 1785 VA or PA, and to trace the background of Cynthia Lewis Buffington.

John Cottrell, s/o Jonathan & Catherine Cottrell, b. 1861, OH

I'm searching for information on the marriage of John Cottrell, s/o Jonathan Cottrell and Catherine Gilfillen, who were married 22 Dec. 1853 in Gallia Co. Their son John was born about 1861 in OH, probably Gallia Co. Other known children of Jonathan and Catherine Cottrell, all born in OH, are Mary C., Francis L., Thase?, and Jane Cottrell. Jonathan and Catherine moved to Mason Co., (W)VA before the 1860 census was taken.
I'm hoping to find enough information to help me determine if this John Cottrell is the same person who married Virginia Unknown abt. 1884 and settled on Sugar Branch of Hurricane Creek in Putnam Co., WV.
In September, my husband and I posted a request for information on Cornelius Halley. We are still in need of information, but have found that we made a mistake on one of Cornelius' spouse's names. He was married in about 1878 to a Rhoda in Gallia County. His second wife was ATLANTA VIRGINIA SHULL and not Virginia Scarberry as we previously stated. I also learned from my 82 year old great-aunt that he went by the nickname of Neal. I also know that he was born in about 1855 but do not know who his parents are or any of his siblings. I would greatly appreciate any information on this family.

Thank you.

I have a Charles Foster Gordon b. abt 1879. S/O William H. Gordon and Eliza Jane Holmes. Also found him listed with father Samuel Gordon, so not sure who daddy is. Married a Leota Jane De Witt in 1899 in Mason County, WV. In 1900 census, he is listed with Leota and a son named Fred Gordon b. 1900. Also in the 1900 census a few days later, Leota is listed with her parents, using her maiden name but no Charles or Fred is found again. Leota remarried abt 1906 to a Jack Arbaugh of Fayette County, WV and lived her life out there till her death in 1954. My grandfather is Frederick Earl De Witt and on his obituary it listed several stepbrothers and sisters with the last name of Arbaugh. These Arbaughs are the same names of Leota and Jack Arbaugh. So I am looking for Fred Gordon and Charles Gordon. Did Charles die and Fred took on his mother's maiden name. My Fred De Witt, b 1900, lived his life from at least 1918 till his death in 1957 in Montgomery, WV and worked on the C & O railroad in Handley, WV. Any information would be appreciated.

Hello: I am trying to connect the dots about family (lore) connection to the (Ohio) 'French Five Hundred'. Remember seeing a faded paperback book (Sibley, published circa 1933?) when I was a kid. The family heritage book that refers to 'FFH' is the "PETHOD" family. I am part of the ANTHONY line that traces its roots to OH circa 1825 (Levi Anthony). 'FFH' arrived circa 1790 in present-day Gallia County. My trail runs cold at 1825. Early Ohio tax records show David Anthony (1825: Jackson County) and William Anthony (1819: Brown County) and William Anthony (1806: Butler County). Any assistance would be appreciated.

Am searching for John Zink who was born about 1792 in Virginia. That we know, he had 5 children (1840, Ohio, Gallia Co., Walnut Twp.): John Jr. born about 1822, married Elizabeth; James Madison born about 1826, married Susan; William, born about 1836; and Sarah born about 1834. All these children were born in Virginia.

According to the 1840 census, John's wife is still living, but in 1850, Gallia Co., Perry Twp., John is a widower.

James Madison Zink and his wife Susan moved to Franklin Co., Bath Twp., Indiana between 1856 and 1860. They are found there with three daughters in 1860: Sarah A., age 10; Mary E., age 7; Jane, age 4. In 1870, there is an additional young lady, Lila May.

As of 1860, John Sr., born about 1792, is not in Gallia Co anymore and I can't find either Sarah or young William. John Zink, Jr. and wife Elizabeth are still there - their children are James Madison, William, Sarah Elizabeth, Emily & John.

By 1870, John Jr. is deceased an d Elizabeth is still living in Perry Twp., Gallia Co., OH. She is still there in 1880, but deceased by 1900.

I can't seem to locate any records in either Perry or Walnut Twps., in Gallia Co, so I am at a loss as to where to turn next. In 1850 they were in Larence County, Ohio. In 1860 they were in Cabell County, Virginia.
I found Arthur Nelson's Civil War papers and he was absent Nov. 1864 and at wars end in 1865 had not been found. I was not surprised by this as I could not find him in the 1870 census. He said he was born in Gallia, Ohio.
I am hoping there are other Nelson's there that might br related to father or siblings of my lost Arthur.
Sincerely,
Brenda Moss

Solomon Smith-Catherine Hartsook Family-Virginia & Ohio

I need info on the children of Solomon Smith born ca 1786 probably in Maryland. I only know of Mary born 1825. The census shows 3 daughters & several sons. He & Catherine Hartsook were married January 4, 1812 in Augusta Co., Virginia. About 1817 they moved to Gallia Co., Ohio. Catherine was born Dec. 22, 1788 in Frederick Co. Maryland, daughter of William Hartsook. I have info on the Hartsooks, but nothing on the Smith line. Catherine may have died between 1840 & 1846 as a Solomon Smith married Christina Lewis in 1846 in Gallia Co. Solomon appears in every census in Gallia Co. from 1820 to 1860. It appears he died between 1860 & 1870, but there is no will.

I need the help of anyone who has researched Court Records
for Apprenticed Ancestors. My Ancestor Allen Murphy was
apprenticed to a man who may have lived in Jackson or Gallia
County, Ohio. This would have been in the 1830s'.
To make things more complicated, Allen took on the last
name of this person. Therefore, Allen does not show up on any Census until his Marriage in 1850. His family insisted that he marry useing his family name! I am seeking the court
record, to find his mothers name and locate his siblings.
Helpful hints are welcome!
