UPDATE: Fulton Co. Schools

I have just finished my overhaul of the Fulton County Schools page on my website.

http://www.oldohioschools.com/fulton_county.htm

I am still missing quite a few pictures of some of the old schools as well as some dates and locations. Please check out the new page and let me know what you think or if you can help with any other information. It now loads much faster and is more user-friendly for people wanting to only view a certain county.

BROWNS in WAUSEON

I think I got the date wrong on my BROWN family reunion photo. It is dated 1913, but when I check the ages of the people there, it has to be about 1903 or sooner.

Is there any way to learn what BROWNS were living in Wauseon, OH while this photo was taken? They had to have family there or they wouldn't have held a family reunion in town. I understand that there were other reunions for the same family in about 1930 in New York and one in about 1918 in new York. If anyone has a city directory for that time period it might help. I really want to identify the remailing people in my photo.

Thanks, Beverly

Trying to find information regarding Daniel Wise (1826-1893) in Fulton County Ohio. I believe he married Catherine Single/Lingle (born abt 1832 -?) abt 1847 in Henry Co. Ohio, and from this union had my gg grandfather William H. Wise (and others), but haven't had any luck locating his parents or possible siblings. Also the whereabouts of his wife after his death in 1893. I have his burial in Wauseon Union Cemetery in Wauseon, Ohio, but can't find his wife in the cemetery or death records. Any and all help that anyone can provide regarding him, his parents, siblings, and children would be tremendously appreciated! Thanks!
The age at death reads; '2 years, 9 months, 12 Days'. Lucretia died Dec. 17, 1857 (or could be 1867). Would like to find out where at West Franklin the stone is located.

I am looking for information the Bell family that is buried in Hawley Cemetery in Chesterfield, Fulton County, Ohio. This would be primarily Thomas, Sarah, Edward, and Sarah since they are the names I have found. I believe Thomas, Edward, and Sarah are siblings, children of Thomas and Sarah Bell of England, and the 2nd Sarah is the younger Thomas' wife. Sarah Bell, the sister of Thomas and Edward, would have probably been the first wife of William H. Ware. They would have migrated from Lenawee County, Michigan to Ohio.

I am particular interested in finding any obituary information, but anything at all would be appreciated.

News from The Berea Advertiser / August 30, 1877

OLMSTED

Those who attended church on the two last Sundays, had a chance to listen to a tirade against dancing. On the first Sunday, Mr. Burlison went so far as to call those ladies who attended dances, "Things", and on last Sunday, Mr. Grogan nearly matched him. Perhaps those men have made friends by their remarks but we would like to ask them which is the greater sin: to go to a dance properly conducted and while away few hours in "tripping the light fantastic" or for a crowd to go off into the woods where the temptations to sin are many times greater, and make night hideous until hours when most dancing would be over, and call it a camp-meeting? We wait with patience for the explanation.

Uncle Chancy Mead** is quite low, and fears are entertained for his recovery. Old age and general debility are the cause.

The dance at Shueron's Grove, was not very well patronized by the young people of this place.

Mrs. Mary Moyer, of Oak Shade, Fulton county, is visiting at her father's, Mr. W.W. Meads*.

Mr. Busby is still looking for his mare and buggy, and would probably like to interview ye barefoot tramp for a short time.

The Sunday School will picnic at the lake on Thursday of this week.

Submitted by W.D.B.

NOTES BY TRANSCRIBER, on 4-1-2008.
*According to the 1870 census, this Mary is the daughter of Wm. W. Mead, who is the son of above-mentioned Chauncy Mead.
** According to the 1870 census, born c. 1790 in Vermont.

I know this is a long shot but does anyone out there have any info on a Hattie Munro? Here's what I have on her. She was born to Emma (Watson) Mills and either a Richard Sutclille or a William Mills on July 24, 1890. She married Guey Munro. I don't have the exact date of marriage right in front of me at the moment. They had 3 kids. She disappeared before the 1930 census, there is a rumor she ran off with a salesman. When my great grandfather died, it was listed he was widowed. I've been told that Hattie may be buried somewhere in Wauseon, Ohio but I have no proof if that is true or not. Help, please!! lol Thanks all.

We as a family would especially like to thank the staff of Swanton Heath Care and Retirement Center for their graciousness and compassion during dad's very brief stay. Also, to Dr. Mark Cockley who always had time and patience for us and the many caring nurses and doctors at St. Luke's. Memorial contributions may be made to the Swanton Alliance Church or Hospice of Northwest Ohio. A Dad and Grandpa is a person who is loving and kind, And often he knows what you have on your mind. He's someone who listens, suggests and defends. A Dad and Grandpa can be one of your very best friends! He's proud of your triumphs, but when things go wrong, A Dad and Grandpa can be patient and helpful and strong in all that you do, a Dad and Grandpa's love plays a part. There's always a place for him deep in your heart. And each year that passes, you're even more glad, more grateful and proud just to call him your Dad and Grandpa! Thank you, "Babe"....for listening and caring, for giving and sharing, But, especially, for just being you! We will love you always! Author unknown.
Penney Family of Fulton

I have found an Elenor Penney (b. 1798 NY - after 1870 Fulton,OH?) on the 1850 Milan, Erie census. Her husband is dead, probably after 1842. Their children were: Alphonse (1825), Isaac (Nov 1828), John (1832), Anna (1834), Jacob (1839), Louisa (1842).
Jacob may have moved to NY, married a woman named Mary and had two sons, Eugene and William. He may have served in the Civil War in Ulster, NY, discharged 1861. Mary may have died as Jacob is found later in Fulton, OH near his brother, Isaac, in 1880.
This same Jacob may have remarried a woman named Jemima and had more children : Frank, James, Burdella, George, Anna Maria, John and Cora Olive.
I am hoping to discover whether this is indeed the same Jacob Penney. I am inclined to believe it is since the person I believe to be his brother Isaac also named sons Eugene and William, although they may have just been popular names.
Can anyone prove or disprove my theory? I'd be happy to share other Penny family research, too.

When he entered service he gave Fulton as his home of record.

Soldier: Donald Homer Loudon
Born: Jan. 27, 1915, Caucasian
Date of loss: Missing in Action December 1, 1950 in North Korea. His remains were never recovered.

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 158 families in Ohio that have not been located. There is one family from Fulton County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
Sarah Spencer died Dec. 15, 1870, Pleasant View Cem., Fayette

Sarah was the wife of David F. Spencer. I am trying to learn her maiden name. I believe she was most likely the dau. of Abram (Abraham) and Hannah Snow Emerick of Lysander, NY., who had two dau. born 1810-1815. Some Emericks migrated from Lysander, NY. to Fulton about the same time as David (1845). Another Emerick migrated to Gorham, after mar. Rensselaer Humphrey (sp). There was another Emerick-Humphrey mar. earlier, that family staying back in NY. I have tried to get mortuary records, a death record, a newspaper obit, military records from Sarah`s Son John, First MI. Sharpshooters, and I have searched for the will of the suspected father of Sarah back in Onondaga, NY. I am now looking for grade school records but have not found any yet. Sarah`s name is on the 1850 Fulton Census, through the 1870. Is there something else in the court house records that I might check? Any ideas welcome, Please. Wendell Spencer

I'm looking for any information on the parents of my g.g.g.grandfather Philander Clark who marreid Mary Ann (Rolison) Clark of Seneca, NY. Philander Clark was born Sept. 12, 1810 in New York and died Sept 26, 1893 in Dover twp. Ohio. Mary Ann was born in Seneca County New York on March 21, 1820 and died Aug. 18, 1878 in Dover twp Ohio. The children of Philander and Mary Ann Clark, Lemar, Amaziah, Leander and Harrison Edgar were born in Livingston, NY, while Martha, and Mary were born in Lake, Co. Ohio. Mary Ann's parents Charles and Susannah (Harrison) Rolison were born in Sussex, Co. New Jersey in 1780 and on 12/27/1782, respectively. The information I'm search for is the name of Philander Clark's parents--we think they were born and lived for sometime in Conn. Philander had a sister named Eunice and a brother named Amaziah all born in New York.
Thank you

Finding William Spencer`s Ohio b. Wife

David F. Spencer brought his family to Fayette (village) in 1845. The oldest son William b. in 1829 in NY. missed the 1850 census, but he found an Ohio wife who would go with him to Jackson, Michigan. There is some evidence she was a Turner (Amajiah) from Chesterfield, and other evidence she was dau. of Samuel P Knapp of Clinton. Two other names, Sigsbey and Bardorf from Royalton and York respectively, are lesser possibilities. The name of William`s wife is Olive A. and at times she went by Angela. Olive would have been born abt 1839. Do you know any of these Fulton Co., Ohio surnames from 1845 on? Thanks. ws

Some years ago while visiting Fayette, I inquired at the mortuary there about records they might have had. I learned at that time the mortuary had changed ownership, and the previous owners had taken the records with them, and my best recollection was that the previous owners had moved to Florida. Have the records been located, restored to the village, or presented to some library or society perhaps? What became of the records? Thanks

Cordelia Spencer, David F. Spencer Genealogy correction

1850 census Oneida, Ephraim and Cordelia and children. 1860 census, Cornelia a widow.. Also on the 1860 Oneida census, George & Saphronia Spencer with children Ida, William & Henry. George W. goes to war, 117 Oneida. On return they move to Seneca Michigan and add Albert.. 1870 census, MI., Cordelia living with mar. dau. Electa Whipple in Kent Co., Grand Rapids. 1880 census Cordelia living in Seneca MI. with son George W. Spencer and wife Sophronia. Cordelia had mar. David F. Spencer between 1870 and 1880, David granting full dower to his farm for Cordelia`s care (ill with long term ague-malaria). Both were in their later 60`s when they married. David died Dec. 6, 1879. Two corrections to the two Spencer genealogies. The pioneer history book of Oneida has Cordelia dead around 1850, according to her son Elias. She lived on in NY. and MI. untill her death in 1888, and was returned to NY, Oneida to be buried with her 1st husband and father of her children, Ephraim Spencer , b. Litchfield Ct. The second correction is to Flora Clark`s 4 Spencer Bros. to N. England.genealogy. Under the line of the brother Michael Spencer go to David F. Spencer in the index, the real identity of Cordelia Spencer. A rearrangement of David F. Spencer`s wives needs to include Sally (Sarah) Spencer who came with him to Ohio in 1845, shown on 3 census in Ohio, Fulton Co., Gorham Twp, Village of Fayette, mother of his children b. after 1840 with good evidence, and buried with him at Pleasant View Cemetery at Fayette Village, on line. If there ever was a Lucretia, she did not go to Ohio and die there as David`s wife as the Flora Clark Genealogy states. This error has been circulated for half a century at least and may well go back to a genealogist of 1889 who wrote about the line, only to be copied through time as fact. Is anyone familiar with old downtown photo's of Swanton or the Toledo area well enough to confirm the location? Only one business sign is legible, A.G. West. Horses and Wagons line the side of the streets. A 14 man brass and drum band stand below a Welcome sign that stretches the main road. The only two men I can identify are Frank McBride (1st on the left) and Ed McBride (2nd on the left).

Erbskorns and Bauns/Baums

Seeking information on Anna Erbskorn (1873-1951) and her husband Gotlieb Baum/Baun (1864-1907). Anna was the daughter of Johannes and Barbara Erbskorn. She married Gotlieb sometime around 1892. Both are buried at Ottokee Cemetery. I believe that most of the Erbskorn children resided in or around the Pettisville area, with one son, William, moving to Indiana.
There is a bit of confusion as to whether or not Gotliebs surname was Baun or Baum. Some of their children used the name Baun whereas others carried the Baum surname. I am really hoping to get to the bottom of this mystery, but as of yet have hit nothing but dead ends.
I would appreciate any and all information anyone might have regarding this family, it's descendants or other relatives. .

Can't find him after 1870? What happened to Ozell? His mother, Mary Anna (Sheldon) Green died 17 FEB 1872-1873 in Ottokee, Fulton Co., OH. Although I cannot find where she is buried. Looking for an Obit for her or Ozell. Maybe she and Ozell died of some illness at that time? Are there any Ottokee cemetary records other than the main Ottokee town cemetary? Were there any major illnesses in Ottokee about that time?
thanks, Bonnie

They were originally from Maryland, and likely the people of the same names who were married in Frederick County there in 1805. I know Elizabeth passed away at a young age and is buried with Samuel at Beck Cemetery. My question or info I am seeking is if Samuel possibly remarried after Elizabeth's death. Please respond if you think you have info. Thanks so much.

I'm seraching for the parents of Philander Clark of Conn/New York/Ohio. Philander Clark(Born 8/19/1813) and Mary Ann (ROISON or Rowlison)(Born 3/21/1818)married in New York or Conn.around 1836. Philander's family (Clark) came from Ireland and settled in the New York/Conn.area and then Philander and Mary moved west to Lake county Ohio and lived out their lives in Fulton County near Wauseon Ohio. Most of the family members are buried in Fulton county in a small cemetary near Tedrow, Ohio. Three of Philander's sons Amaziah, Leander and Edgar served in the Civil War. Leander was killed fighting at Fort Gregg on April 2, 1865. Following the war Amaziah and Edgar returned to Fulton county Ohio and farmed for the rest of their lives.

bcw
For the time being, I have a copy of "Delta, Ohio Area History" (1990, Curtis Media Corp.) and am willing to look up family names who lived in the Delta area. There are 518 family histories, for the most part they are written by living descendants. Some of these histories are relative newcomers to Delta, but there are many which give great history about a family first arriving to the area.

The surnames are indexed so it will not be hard to check out names. I would need name and approximate date to be sure we are talking about the same individual.

Let me know if I can help out anyone. -- Denise

I have been reseaching the Gollswoods legend, or at least trying. I found a paragrah on the net that stated that the family was banished to the woods and all died and the last to go was the father who haunts the place. Well as far as I can tell it is not the Golls who haunt the place because I track them from coming to the U. S. to their deaths. They did however give us the great park that we have today. Does anyone have any info as to the orginal start of the legend.

Looking for Daniel Hall and Elizabeth Downey. My ggrandmother was Lucinda Hall born 1855. Maybe in Metamora. She grew up there. The family story goes that her father at some point in time changed his name and went to Canada. This was sometime after Lucinda had her first Child, about 1877. I know that Lucinda married James Palmater and had two children in Metamora. They were William and maybe Phoebe. It is assumed that Daniel and Elizabeth went to Amhurstburg with James and Lucinda around 1877 as this is where James came from. The rest of the Hall Children went to Adrian and started a furniture store. One sang on the locale radio station there. I do not know if Daniel changed his name to Hall or from Hall. Thank You....
