I’m not related to any member of this family.

Facts you should know about the early census records –

All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++

PPL frequently used nick names for the census records.
Remember census takers were hired for their ability to either print or write and not nesessarily spell correctly.

PPL also changed their 1st names as time went by.
Matt,
You may want to request from the Social Security Administration the Application for Social Security Card (form SSA-5)for Norma J Sutton, nee Smith and Judith L Shaffer-Moore, nee Smith. To request the original SSA-5 you use the form SSA-711 at the www.ssa.gov website. When I requested my grandfather's 1936 SSA-5 application it listed his father's full name and mother's full maiden name. This could let you know if these individuals are the ones you are interested in. To complete the form SSA-711 use the information for Norma and Judith from ancestry's database of Social Security Death Index.
David in Pennsylvania

Thank you so much for the Mary (Freeman) Ross obituary. It seems to prove that she was the wife of Donald M. Ross who was a descendant of my ggg-grandfather Alexander Ross. There are no children mentioned in this obituary which leads me to think that Donald was yet another Ross who was childless. I haven't found a single living male Ross descendant from Alexander. There are females, but no one to carry the Ross surname.
I appreciate your help.

Actually, Matt, I DO have my psychic moments; have been like that since I was a kid - seriously. ;-) It used to really spook my parents too. LOL!

Don't give up yet! You're so close...

[BTW - I still have the same e-mail address, do you?]

That Norma J Sutton on that private tree was born in Bellflower, CA. I know that your Norma was born in Columbus. Wouldn't hurt to e-mail that individual and inquire about the Norma on his tree though, just to rule it in/out.

Based on some snooping I did when I got home from work, I think we can rule out the Norma J Sutton info I found in Eugene, OR this morning.

Me thinks your Norma lived in Hesperia, CA, Junction City, OR, Lynnwood, WA, Waldport, OR, and Seattle. This Norma would be 79 (right age); whether she's still alive, I'm not sure. So that's why I'd suggest you e-mail that private tree owner [if you haven't already] to see if they do have the same Norma J and are just confused about where she was born.

In the meantime, I 'think' I just found her [Norma] husband's name...how about you e-mail me privately, Matt. DON'T get your hopes up too high, but I'm working something [another angle] on it....

Kat

Hi Kat

You must be psychic, I was actually writing an e-mail to you today, but my parents turned up so I was going to finish it off later and send to you.

With regards to that person who had Norma J on their tree, either it was a different Norma, or they had the wrong details for her. I know for certain that Norma was born in Franklin Ohio, from my grandfathers military records and I found hr birth record on here as well.

I think the city directory for Norma Sutton is the correct one, because the birth date is correct and the address is the same as what was said in my Grandfathers Obituary.

I think the listing at http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uspublicreco... for Judith may also be correct because on my grandfathers obituary it said she was living in Vancouver, and I did a google search for that address and I think Vancouver is a district in Washington?
The only think I found confusing is the surname, The Obituary says shaffer, where as that listing in the directory says shaffer-moore.

I put in a request for ask a librarian for Norma Sutton at Washington Library, hopefully that might turn something up as well.
I would really love to find the marriages and children of my Mum's siblings.
My Mum has now got her heart set on finding a photo of her Dad, I wish I had never got her hopes up quite so much, but I can only try.

Thanks again for everything, I do appreciate it.
Spk soon

Matt

Hey Matt,

Kat again here...I too, found that SS Death Index record the other day for a Norma J Sutton, born Feb 21, 1934 - died Dec 16, 2009 in Seattle...if you look further, you see that someone has her attached to their private tree, and that she was Norma JEAN Sutton, and was born in CA; so maybe that's not your Norma JANE....??

I did however, find a City Directory listing for the 1991-93 timespan for a Norma J Sutton, born Feb 21, 1934, living on River Road in Junction City, OR. There's a phone number listed there too, but hey, that was 10 years ago also, so.... but I bet that's her, as it lines up with what's in your grandfather's 1991 obit.

You said, "I must be doing something wrong as I can not find anything." Noooooo, not necessarily. First of all, every marriage record for every marriage in the US is NOT online, not even here at Ancestry.

Second, their married names at the time of their father's 1991 death/obit aren't necessarily their first and only married names either....they may have been married & divorced/widowed and remarried again before his 1991 death.

Norma would have been about 57 years old when her Dad died; she could have been on a 2nd or 3rd marriage - maybe not. Maybe Sutton was her one and only marriage. Plus, you don't yet know where they married....CA, OR, WA, AZ, or eloped & honeymooned in another state/country all together.... I have ancestors that married in states they were not living in, a few went to Canada to get married, and one was living in CA but they went to Vegas to marry.

There's also an address/phone number here for a Norma & HG (Bill) Sutton living in Eugene, OR, for the 1995-2002 timespan, but no birth date info included to prove that it's her. [Under US Phone and Address Directories 1993-2002]

More later, gotta run,

Kat

Thank you so much guy's for the info and help. I really do appreciate all your help.
I am hopeless at all this.

My mother never knew her Father " William Richard Smith" She was a war baby.
So it was for my Mum that I started all this tracing of her family tree. I never realized how difficult it was all going to be lol.

We got access to his military records.

So from the Records, We found my Mum's siblings.
I know they where all born in Columbus, Ohio

They moved to California for a while. Then my Grandfather joined the Military.
In 1945 He moved back to Columbus Ohio and married a Juanita West and they had a daughter Judith Lynn Smith.

At some point the family all moved back to California then in 1981 moved to Washington.

Although I now have the married names of the daughters from my Grandfathers Obituary in 1991, I do not know if they were previously married and have not found any marriage records for any of them. It has all been very frustrating indeed lol.

I don't suppose I could be really cheeky and ask you guys for some guidance on how I would go about finding the marriage records, because even though I am a fully paid up member of this site, it does not seem to be giving me any hints or positive search results.

Thanks again and Best Wishes

Matt
OK, not a problem. I will take you through the process step by step. This will be a "teaching experience" so that you can do this anytime you are searching for anyone.

Since there could be many people with the same name we have to eliminate some by checking if they have died so we start with the Social Security Death Index. Most people born in the mid-1930s had a SS number.

Let's start with the oldest daughter, Norma and only type in her name and birthdate. Bingo, #3 is Norma J. SUTTON, died 16 Dec 2009 possibly in Seattle, WA. You also know that she got her SSN in California before 1951. If she was born in 1934 she would have been 17 or younger.

Next daughter is Judith born 14 Dec 1945 and #9 is Judith Shaffer MOOR, died 16 Dec 2009, possibly in Moab, UT. This is an example of why you don't type in a last name; apparently Judith remaried. She got her SSN in California in 1960 when she was 14 or 15.

Do the same for David and William. Hint: William may be living.

In both of these instances their age suggests that they still lived with a/their parent(s) in California.

You could search online for newspapers that published an obit but it is much easier and usually cheaper to contact the library in the city where they last lived. Some libraries can even scan the obit to you in an email for free.

Bill
Thank you David, that's much appreciated.

I think the Judith Lynn Smith who married someone called Shaffer was living in Vancouver, Washington.

Ancestry came up with a hint on U.S. Public Records Index, Volume 1 with the name Judith L Moore
there was another record for the same address on the U.S. Public Records Index, Volume 2 with the name Judith L Shaffer-Moore
So I think it is possible that they are the same person.

I have not been able to find a marriage record though.

So confused, I am not very good at this lol

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer at www.seattlepi.com shows a public death notice for Norma J Sutton. It gives her town as Shoreline, Washington. This is 9 miles outside of downtown Seattle, Washington.

David in Pennsylvania

If you use the link provided in the previous response it is for the Social Security Administration Death Index. In the search form put in Norma J Sutton for first and last names, and put in year of birth of 1934. The results show a Norma J Sutton born 21 Feb 1934 and died 16 Dec 2009. The last residence was Seattle, King County, Washington. The social security number was issued in California, before 1951. Here is the link to the ancestry Social Security Death Index:
http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=3693 .

Judith Lynn Shaffer was born 1945 and living in Vancouver in 1991, so it's possible she is still living today. You may want to narrow your search for her by specifying only Canadian records.

William Henry Smith II born 1932 will be a more difficult search because it is such a common name. If you can track down an obituary for Norma it may give you some leads to finding her siblings, William and Judith.

David in Pennsylvania

But I have not been able to find any further records for him either.

I would be so grateful if anyone was able to help me in any way

According to William G. Martin's 1858 History of Franklin county, chapter XXXVI (36), pages 384-386 - http://www.genealogybug.net/franklin_1858/churches.htm - there were three Lutheran Churches organized before 1849. They were, German Lutheran Reformed (1821) at the corner of High and Mound Streets in Columbus; The German Reformed on Town Street between Fourth & Fifth; and Trinity German Evangelical Lutheran. Trinity is still active - http://www.oldtrinity.com/

I am looking for info on Seney Ann Thomas born abt 1817 possibly in Virgina. I Know she was married at least 3 times. First to Joseph Pritchard about 1836. She was married second to John Barcus on 9/3/1844. She married third Elisha Stein 5/1/1851. All marriages were in Franklin, Co, Ohio. The problem I am having is I have seen her first name as Seneca Ann, Seney Ann, and Mary Ann not sure which is her first name. I know she had two children with Joseph Pritchard, George W Pritchard b: 1840 and John Pritchard b: 1842. She also had two children that I know of with John Barcus, Hiram Barcus b: 1845 and William Franklin Barcus b: 1848/50. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You,
Diana

I even called the Sisters (Order) who were in charge. When they pulled out, they didn't take any records. I talked with a Sister in their Geneology dept. She said many times back then (turn of the century and before) kids came because their parents couldn't take care of them, then when the parents got back on their feet, the kids went back home. I talked with St. Vincents a couple of years ago and they said they didn't have any records. I will try to contact the Catholic Diocese this summer. Do you even know a family name?

I lived at St Vincent in the early 1970's and was adopted by a staff member who died in 1986. I have been unable to find out anything about my (birth parents) or the 3 years that I lived there.
Dear friend I hope that you have better luck than I did. St Vincent was and is a place that likes to keep its secrets.

Many of you know Solomon Irick is buried in Ohio under the name Solomon Price. I'm trying to persuade the VA to replace his damaged headstone with his correct name. If you would like to join this effort, please email kimberley.bernard@va.gov and request a replacement stone. Our family scion should be remembered under his own name. Please reference Solomon Irick #55658561. It also might be helpful to explain how you are related to him.
Thank you very much,
Judy Clonts
