David and William.

Need help sorting out, thanks.

I am looking for more information on Jesse Lane and Elizabeth Cain who were married on 12/18/1804 in Fairfield Co. I believe Jesse to be a nickname and have found a Greenberry and Elizabeth Lane in the 1840, 1850 and 1860 census with data that all fits with Jesse. Another Jesse Lane in the 1840 census is 20-30 yrs and I believe him to be a son of Greenberry and Elizabeth.

Is anyone working on Lane's or the Cain's--- I am trying to tie this Elizabeth into my family and believe she is the sister to John Cain of Perry County. My website shows the lineage of John Cain ---
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~brandt/Joh...

Thanks for any help!

I have searched high and low to no avail.
My Eli seems to have appeared and disappeared within ten years.

I have the Franklin County marriage license of Eli and Julia 1853. They were listed as living in Canal Winchester.

The Canal History gave brief mention that Eli was in the guard.

Eli and Julia had children until 1856 and she is listed alone with the children in the 1860 census, still living in Canal.

Any help on either would be so appreciated. I cannot find anything.

Is there someone who can do a lookup for me in "Ohio Lands Chillicothe Land Office", by Marie Taylor Clark, C. G?

I need to know if there was any land transfer made by to or from a Coon/Koon/Koontz/Coons/Cone/Gohn in Range 20, Township 12 in the early 1800's, say between 1798 and 1813. That would be Clearcreek Twp, Fairfield County. Or, because of boundary changes it may be Saltcreek Twp, Pickaway County.

Thanks very much,

Raymond Coon
Oregon
I am wondering if there is a transcription of burials in St. Mary's Cemetery that is available. I am trying to determine or confirm death information and burial site for William David GORDON, died in 1874, and his wife Catherine (Keenen) Gordon, died 1877.

I believe that some of their children may also be buried in St. Mary's:

1)Ellen Gordon BATES, 1910, and her husband Thomas Bates, died Dec 1906; their children:
William David Bates
Tomas (Thomas), died 24 Sept 1914
Martha Bates WALLACE, married to John A WALLACe who probably died before 1930;
Patrick Bates, died 1939
Sarah Bates, died 1966
Rachel Bates, died aft 1930

2)Catherine GORDON, died 1919

3) Patrick, GORDON, died 1902

4) Elizabeth Cecelia Gordon MIRGON, died 1880 and her husband George W MIRGON; their children:
William Mirgon
George Mirgon, died 1964
Edward Mirgon, died 1910
Lola Mirgon

So far I have had little luck finding obituaries for these people, so a review of burials in St. Mary's cemetery might be helpful.
Christ/Crist, Keller, Schmelzer of Fairfield and Perry counties, Ohio

Note: nickname of Philumena Frances SCHMELZER who married Charles CHRIST was "Minnie" Anselm SCHMELZER's given name is also spelled Anslum (gravestone) or Absolom. He is the son of J. Blasius SCHMELZER and Maria Walburga CHRIST (no known relation to Chas. CHRIST who married her granddaughter.

Is Margarethe KELLER the dau. of Joseph and Elizabeth KELLER, buried in the St. Phillips Cemetery, Berne, Fairfield County, Ohio?

Descendants of Anselm Schmelzer

Generation No. 1

1. ANSELM-7 SCHMELZER (JACOBUS BLASIUS-6, JOSEF-5 SCHMOLZER, ANTON-4, WILLIBALD-3, JAKOB-2, SIXTUS-1) was born March 29, 1831 in Ornbau, Bavaria, Germany, and died June 24, 1872 in Bremen, Fairfield County, Ohio. He married MARGARETHE KELLER October 30, 1854 in Sacred Heart Church, Geneva, Fairfield, Ohio. She was born August 31, 1831, and died November 17, 1873, presumably at Bremen, Berne Township, Franklin County, Ohio.

Notes for ANSELM SCHMELZER:
During the American Civil War, Anselm (Absalom) enlisted in Company C, 62nd Infantry Regiment, Ohio, on September 23, 1864 as a private at age 35. This unit was initially organized on Sept. 1, 1861 and mustered on Sept. 1, 1865. During the period that Anselm was enlisted the regiment fought the following battles:

Battle Near Petersburg, Virginia on 23 September 1864;
Battle Near Richmond, Virginia on 9 October 1864;
Battle at Darbytown Road, Virginia on 13 October 1864;
Battle at Hampton, Virginia on 13 October 1864;
Battle at Richmond, Virginia on 14 October 1864; Battle at Chapin's Farm, Virginia, on 01 April 1865; Battle at Fort Gregg, Virginia on 06 April 1865;
Battle at Rice Station, Virginia on 06 April 1865;
Battle at Petersburg, Virginia on 02 April 1865;
Battle at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia on 09 April 1865.

Jean Schmelzer gives Anselm's date of death as June 24, 1872. Other records have shown 1899.

Three children born to Anselm Schmelzer and Margarethe are not listed by Jean Schmelzer: Joseph, b. 1864, Benjamin R born 1866 and Sophia born 1868.

More About ANSELM SCHMELZER:
Burial: St. Phillips Cemetery, Berne Township, Fairfield, Ohio

Notes for MARGARETHE KELLER:
Anselm (Anslum) Keller and Margarethe are buried in the St. Phillips Cemetery in Berne Township, Fairfield County, Ohio. In the same cemetery is buried Joseph Keller b. 1808, d. May 31, 1861 and Elizabeth Keller d. April 11, 1864. These could be her parents but more research is needed. Birth date for Margarethe is based on date given on tombstone.

More About MARGARETHE KELLER:
Burial: St. Phillips Cemetery, Berne Township, Fairfield, Ohio

Children of ANSELM SCHMELZER and MARGARETHE KELLER are:
i.	MARY LORETTA8 SCHMELZER, b. October 05, 1855.
ii.	PHILUMENA FRANCES SCHMELZER, b. October 15, 1856, Logan, Hocking, Ohio; d. October 01, 1904, Washington, Daviess, Indiana; m. CHARLES CHRIST, Bet. 1874 - 1876; b. Abt. 1850, Alsace, France; d. Aft. 1900.

Notes for PHILUMENA FRANCES SCHMELZER:
Jean Schmelzer has Minnie's birth date as Oct. 22. The birth certificate may be in error or perhaps Oct. 22 was the Christening date. In the 1900 federal census, Minnie said that she was 40 years old on her last birthday which would make her born in 1859 rather than the 1857 year shown on her death certificate.

Her death certificate clearly states her birth date as Oct. 15, 1857 and that she was 47 years, 11 months and 15 days old. But if she died 14 days before her birthday, she would have turned 48 on Oct. 15, 1904 had she lived and that would calculate as a birth year of 1856 ... so she would have turned 44 (not 41) on her birthday in 1900. Maybe she just wanted to shave a few years off her age when talking to the census taker.

Notes for CHARLES CHRIST:
According to family tradition Charles was born in Alsace/Elsass and came to the United States to avoid conscription. His birth date and birth place are not known. In the 1880 census for Corning, Perry, Ohio, he claimed that he was 30 which would indicate that he was born in 1849 or 1850. In that census he also claimed that he was born in Germany.

Following the Franco-Prussian War of 1871, Alsace remained under the control of Germany until the conclusion of WWI in 1918. Alsatians who immigrated to the U.S. would sometimes answer “France” and other times “Germany” when questioned about their place of birth by the census takers. Charles Christ may have answered the question in 1880 on the basis of who was currently in power in 1880 and had been for nine years.

iii.	LAYMAN HENRY SCHMELZER, b. 1858.
iv.	MARY ELIZABETH SCHMELZER, b. December 19, 1859.
v.	SUSAN ANN SCHMELZER, b. March 06, 1861; m. JOHN MICHAEL FREEDNOUR.
vi.	MARGARET HELEN SCHMELZER, b. January 01, 1862; d. November 28, 1863.

More about MARGARET HELEN SCHMELZER:
Burial: St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery

vii.	JOSEPH SCHMELZER, b. 1864.
viii.	BENJAMIN SCHMELZER, b. 1867.
ix.	SOPHIA SCHMELZER, b. 1867.
x.	LEOPOLD SCHMELZER, b. 1869.
xi.	JACOB SCHMELZER, b. 1870.
xii.	FRANK SCHMELZER, b. 1872.
Fairfield County Cemeteries Photographed

Hello fellow researchers,

I have done some work in Fairfield county photographing whole cemeteries to place on my husband's website. I have some ancestors buried in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery, Berne Tp (Shoemaker, Shumaker), but the cemeteries I have photographed are not relatives of mine, so please do not ask me questions about the people, as I have not researched them. This link is simply to aid people who might have ancestors buried in the following cemeteries:

Job's Cemetery
Greencastle Cemetery
Pisgah Cemetery (in Pickerington)
Raver Cemetery
Shoemaker Cemetery (not my branch however!!)

To view these photographs (for free of course), visit http://www.ohioexploration.com
and then follow the cemeteries link. After clicking on the specific cemetery you're interested in, then you must click on the yellow link at the bottom of the paragraph, and that will take you to the complete listing (and corresponding photographs) of all those buried there.

Enjoy!
Jodie Robinson
Where is Houser Cemetery

I'm trying to locate the Houser Cemetery in Violet Twp. The 1990 cemetery book says "Burials in the Houser Family Cemetery is on Huffman property in the woods on a small bluff approximately
fifteen feet above the stream bed and some ten feet back from the edge of the embankment, There is no immediate danger of the stream encroaching on their resting places."

Can anyone tell me exactly where this is?
Thanks

This invitation is to all Houser family members originating from the Houser family in Fairfield County, Ohio, then moving to Randolph Co, IN, Hardin Co, OH, and Iowa. You are descendants of the Humrickhouser family, often seen as H. Houser, (middle name H, last name Houser) on census records in the early to mid 1800s. Humrickhouser is one of 8 or 9 spelling variations of the Homrighausen family name, as is mine. It has only been recently that we've been able to tie the Houser family in with the larger tree.

There will be a national family reunion on June 19-20, 2008 in Dover, Ohio in Tuscarawas County, and we would love to have members of your family participate.
We realize this is a last minute invitation, but if you are able to steal away for a Saturday, we'd love to have you.

Please email myself at hammerhummer@hotmail.com, or Rex Humerickhouse at rexh@charter.net for information.

Redd - Painter challenge #2: Frederick Co., Virginia 1799 & Franklin Co., Ohio

Who were the children of Franklin County, Ohio, settlers Isaac Painter and Elizabeth Redd? Candidates, based on time and location, include Nathaniel, John, and Andrew Jackson Painter enumerated in county censuses beginning in 1840, plus Sarah Painter, who married John C. Martin in 1826, and Mary Painter, who married Abraham Strait in 1836. Are there any records that connect Isaac and Elizabeth with the younger generation of Painters?

Isaac Painter and Elizabeth Redd were married on 13 August 1799 in Frederick County, Virginia. [A] Isaac, a son of Isaac Painter and Sarah Hains, was named in his father’s 1805 will. Elizabeth, a daughter of Andrew Redd and Elizabeth Hollingsworth, was named in her father’s 1818 will.

Isaac was an early settler of Jefferson Township, Franklin County, Ohio, and was a justice of the peace there in 1821 and 1835. He was enumerated in the township in the 1830 census, but does not appear in the 1840 census. Elizabeth reportedly died on 11 November 1847--does anyone know the source of this information?

In the 1840 U.S. Census for Jefferson Township, Franklin County, Ohio, the households of John Painter and Jackson Painter are listed on successive lines. And Nathaniel Painter was enumerated in the county’s neighboring Truro Township.

John Painter remained in Jefferson Township in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, and Jackson—as A. J. Painter or Andrew J. Painter—was enumerated there in 1860, 1870, and 1880. In the 1850 census for Truro Township, the household of Andrew J. Painter immediately follows that of Nathaniel Painter. (While Andrew’s name was recorded as “David” J. Painter, his identity is confirmed by his wife Rachel, who tracks consistently from the 1850 through 1880 censuses.)

The late Harold Painter in “The Painter Family” (1975), p. 42, identifies only one child of Isaac and Elizabeth: son John Painter, born 1809, plus grandchildren including Lewis Painter. The source of Harold Painter’s information is not indicated.

The "History of Franklin & Pickaway Counties, Ohio," (Williams Bros., 1880), p. 399, gives the following account of the early settlers of Franklin County’s Jefferson Township:

"In the same year [1814] came Isaac Painter, John Inks, and Joseph Compton, all of them from Lancaster county, Pennsylvania. Isaac Painter located at the crossing of the Black Lick road and Broadway pike, where J. Milburn now lives. A son Lewis Painter, is in the township, and is one of its large farmers, and representative men."

The account is partially correct, but the Lancaster part is wrong. Isaac Painter had no connection at all with Pennsylvania. The correct Lancaster is the county seat of Fairfield County, Ohio. Before settling in Franklin County, Isaac and Elizabeth Painter probably lived for a time in Fairfield County, Ohio, where Isaac Painter was a witness of the 1808 will of wife’s brother, “George Reed.” Sergeant Isaac Painter served for a few weeks in a militia company probably from Fairfield County during the War of 1812. Isaac’s brother, Abraham Painter spent the winter of 1810-11 in Lancaster, Ohio, when he migrated from Frederick County, Virginia, to Logan County, Ohio.

As for Lewis Painter, he was born in 1838, possibly when Isaac Painter was no longer living and Isaac’s wife Elizabeth would have been age 55. Lewis was enumerated in 1850 in the household of John Painter, and appears to be John’s son—and thus possibly a grandson of Isaac Painter.

EEP

[A] Marriage license: Isaac Painter and Elizabeth Redd, 13 Aug 1799, Frederick Co., Virginia. (John Vogt & T. William Kethley, Jr., "Frederick County Marriages, 1738-1850" (Athens, Ga.: Iberian Publishing Co., 1984), p. 400.)

Cross posted to: Painter; Redd; Fairfield County, Ohio; Frederick County, Virginia; and Franklin County, Ohio message boards.

I am looking for information on ancestors and descendents on the two Frederick Miller's listed in 1850 Fairfield Co, Oh census:

p. 248, Lancaster, Fairfield
Miller, Frederick, age 54, wagonmaker, b. Switzerland (b. abt 1796)
" Catherine, age 53, b. Germany (b. abt 1797)

and...p. 383, Greenfield Twp, Fairfield
Miller, Frederick, age 76, b. PA, farmer (b. abt 1774)
" Susan, age 64, b. PA (b. abt 1786)
" William, age 24, b. PA
" Charles, age 21, b. PA
" Mary A., age 19, b. OH
" Benjamin, age 17, b. OH

From Fairfield Co, OH marriage records on May 4, 1849, a Frederick Miller gave consent for his daughter, Caroline Miller (sometimes referred to as Catherine/Katherine)(b. 1831 or 1832 in PA) to marry George Burkhart. Marriage performed by F. W. Richman, I believe he was a Lutheran pastor.

George, (b. 1818, came over from Wurttemburg in 1847) and Caroline (Miller) Burkhart, moved to Auglaise Co, OH in 1851. I have information from there, and Germans records on the Burkharts, willing to share.

ANY and ALL clues as to the ancestry of either of these Miller families would be much appreciated, especially any Miller church records and/or records that may show baptism of a Frederick Burkhart, b. May 1850.

Many, many thanks, and please email me directly also..............Pat Lenhart
Seeking proof of parents of Edward Devore Haynes, born in 1843 in Fairfield Co., Ohio. He was a soldier in the 17th Ohio Infantry during the Civil War. According to his pension papers, he lived with a Crites family prior to enlisting. Is he the five year old Edward Hanes in the 1850 Census of Fairfield Co., in the household of John Hanes? Edward married (1st) Mrs. Aurilla Turner in Putnam Co., Ohio, and (2nd) Christina Burwell in Allen Co., Indiana. They migrated to Kansas and later to Missouri and Florida. Edward died in 1910 and is buried at St. Cloud, Florida. Christina returned to Kansas, married Silas Roach, and died there.

Ran across this 1798 Pennsylvania law suit that names Fred'k' Leathers' (1754-1822) siblings. The Jane Leathers name is his step-mother.

1798 JANE LEATHER and JAMES WILLIAMSON against FREDERICK LEATHER, jun. HENRY BREAM and BARBARA his wife, JACOB LEATHER, JOHN LEATHER, RICHARD MALONE and MARY his wife, DANIEL LEATHER, ELIZABETH BIEGLER, MARY BIEGLER and JOHN BIEGLER, June.
Copy of a deed, evidence, where a reasonable account has been given of the original.
THIS was a feigned issue, to try the validity of the will of Frederick Leather deceased. The defendants' counsel apprehending that the plaintiffs affected delay, ordered a distringas ; and they now cited as their ground of doing so, 4 Term Rep. 767. The defendant may carry the record of an issue, directed by chancery, down to trial, on a suggestion, that the plaintiff intends to delay it.
And of this opinion was the court. This feigned issue is not like common cases. It may more properly be resembled to replevin wherein both parties are actors. 1 Black. Rep. 375. 1 Espinasse 54. The cause was afterwards postponed by consent.
Messrs. Hamilton and Watts, pro quer. Messrs. She was not buried by her first husband, John Blessing, in the Fairfield Primitive Baptist Cem, Bellbrook, Greene Co, OH, nor with other close Blessing relatives in the Woodland Cem, Xenia, Greene Co, OH, nor in Greene Co, period. I'm looking for ANY evidence of her death/burial in the Greencastle area. I wonder if she was part of the extended Levi Moore family?

Richard, Samuel and William ROLAND - 1830 Census Rush Creek

Does anyone have any information on any of these ROLAND families found in 1830 Census for Rush Creek Twp? Richard male age 30-40, Samuel age 20-30 and William age 60-70. Is William the father of Richard and Samuel? Where did they come from? Did William die in Fairfield County and if yes, is there a will, probate records? I am looking for parents and siblings of my ancestor John Roland, born April 1806 probably in VA. Earliest record I have found for John is marriage Oct 1837 in Montgomery Co Ohio, Clay Twp (he married Lydia Fields b. about 1820.) They moved from Montgomery Co to Shelby Co Ohio about 1850. Their children were Ann Elizabeth, Isaac, Jesse, Catherine, William Franklin and Sarah. Only thing I have to go on is statement from deceased great-uncle that the Rolands came from "south of Columbus." Thanks, Dianne 2bitz@embarqmail.com

SPITLER - need verification of info for DAR membership

I'm hoping someone can help me out there. I decided to join the DAR and I know that I have an ancestor named Jacob SPITLER (1749-1829), who fought in the Revolutionary War from Virginia. He's buried in Fairfield County, OH. From what I understand there is even a DAR marker on his grave, which means he is officially recognized as being a Revolutionary War veteran.

The problem is this. I have only been able to get birth and death certificats for my parents, nothing further back, no family Bibles have turned up, etc. I have Arlie Spitler's genealogy of the SPITLER family, but I doubt if that will be enough. I'm not sure census records will be either, because the DAR has become more rigorous in recent years in what evidence concerning the "patriot" and the family genealogy it accepts from prospective members.

I'm sure there must be someone from Fairfield County who has joined the DAR based on Jacob SPITLER's record and perhaps they even have some of the same ancestors further down. I have sent an email to the DAR in Fairfield County, but have heard nothing back. It would surely help me if there was someone out there who had the required information and would be willing to help me out.

I am not living in Ohio at present. I am quite a distance away, so at this point I cannot come there, but I really need some help on this situation.

My lineage is this:

John SPITLER ( -1752), Jacob SPITLER (1749-1829), Jacob SPITLER (1784-1865), Martin SPITLER (1824-1904), Fremont Dayton SPITLER (1858-1938), Fred Sherwood SPITLER (1891-1960), and myself

Looking forward to some replies,
Betsy SPITLER Phillips

I'd like to invite you all to stop by and look at my new genealogy blog. My main purpose is to try to puzzle out problems and get past brick walls, but I have many other ideas for it, such as postiing photos, creating and
posting maps tracing families from one place to an other, putting up family group information, posting interesting bits of information. I hope it will be helpful to some of the people who read it, and maybe I'll find some cousins or break down one of those brick walls. The topic will not always be related to Fairfield Co., as I have more than 75 surnames and will probably be jumping back and forth, but I'll be sure to tag all my posts so you can find things that relate to your research.

It's a bit skimpy right now, but bear with me and keep reading--and please feel free to leave comments!

Judi Hardin
http://genealogicalswamp.blogspot.com
Emanuel (or Abraham ??) BIXLER is my GG Grandfather. According to a letter in the family Bible, he married Eva Ann FLETCHER (1845-Fairfield Co). They had one son, Joseph Bixler June 22, 1846 but I do not know where he was born. Emanuel is said to be related to the Bixlers from Indiana. I cannot seem to locate them anywhere in the 1850 or 1860 census. Eva and Joseph appear in the 1870 and 1880 Fairfield Co census. Another interesting bit of info..the 1890-91 directory lists Eva as the widow of Abraham (interesting). If anyone has any idea where I fit in with the Bixler families, please contact me at PatCox711@aol.com..would love to hear from you...I may have some information for you too!
Thank you, Pat

Martin, born January 5 1864 (probably) Perry County, OH, and died November 6, 1921 in Kanawha County, WV; his wife, Sarah Jane Holcomb, born September 16 1871 (also probably) Perry County, OH, and died June 6 1936 Kanawha County, WV; Charles' mother, Jane McCullough, born May 26, 1844 Perry County, OH and died December 23, 1928 Kanawha County, WV, and Charles' father William Martin DOB unknown but died before December 23, 1928. The three death records I found (Charles V. Martin, Sarah Jane Holcomb Martin, and Jane McCulloguh Martin) all state that they were buried in Bremen, OH. The information for Sarah Jane Holcomb's death was provided by her brother Edward B. Holcomb of Bremen. No cemetery name was given on the records, just "Bremen." Anybody know about this family? Or any suggestions as to who I should contact or where I should look? The fact that they all spent part of their adult lives in WV but went home for burial speaks to their strong ties to OH. I am also interested in making contact with an descendants of these folks. Thanks in advance!

Log Cabin found in Violet Twp., Fairfield Co., OH

"Violet Township employees recently made a discovery while making way for the Diley Road widening project. While removing the siding from a home at Diley and Busey roads, workers found an early 19th century log house that is thought to have belonged to the Root family, one of the first families to settle the Pickerington area. Pictured here, Violet Township Engineer Greg Butcher directs his crew as they carefully remove the siding to expose the logs beneath. The condition of the house is not yet known and it is still uncertain whether the structure can be saved." [Southeast Messenger, SE Columbus, OH, V 25 #20 p 1, Oct. 1, 207]

There is a picture available at the moment of this log cabin at http://www.columbusmessenger.com/NC/0/798.html
I have not been able yet to find Henry TUSSING's parents. In the 1840 Fairfield co. census, there was a Christian TUSING, age 60-70, and a George TUSING, age 60-70. Henry was age 30-40, apparently living by himself. Would either Christian or George have been Henry's father? Henry married "Polly" BRITTINGHAM in Fairfield county in 1823.

Attached is a transcribed copy of James Strode's bible. James was originally from Berkeley County, Virginia and died in Fairfield County, Ohio. Nancy remarried after James's death to David Devore. The bible lists the two children Nancy had by David. James and Nancy Arnold Strode were my g-g-g-g-grandparents. I have much more data and would love to share.
I'm trying locate information on my 3rd great grandfather Philip Spohn who appears with his family in the 1850 census for Rushcreek Twp as Philip Spoon.

That census shows:
Philip aged 38, his wife Elizabeth 32, their children at that time, H.R. (Hanna Rebecca) 6, G.W. (George W.) 4, J.W. (male) 1; and a female, E. Spoon, 31, all born in Ohio.

By 1860 the family had moved to Bath Twp in Allen Co were the enumerator gave their surname as Sohn:

P. Sohn 48, Elizabeth 42, Hanna 15, G.W. 13, J. 11, Hemilia (Amelia) 8, Mary 4, Wm 2.

It looks like Philip and young William must have died prior to the 1870 census and only Elizabeth, George, Amelia and Mary (Hanna had married)are found in German Twp, Allen Co.

If anyone could shed some light on Philip's parentage or Elizabeth's maiden name, I would be truly grateful.

I am looking for the Thomas family in Fairfield Co. This family descends from Aaron Thomas who settled in Perry Co. in the early 1800's with his sons David, Jacob, Samuel, Evan and Jesse and his daughter Elizabeth Thomas Morrow. Some of the children of this group later moved to Lancaster. Rev. B.F. Thomas and his family which included his children Amos, John, Mary and Hettie lived in Lancaster at some point. Amos S. Thomas was a banker in Lancaster in the early 1900's. Any info on this family is appreciated.

OBIT: Columbus Dispatch, Date Friday, April 22, 1938; page 14 B - MYERS---Loretta, of Pickerington, O., Thursday, age 71. Survived by husband, Albert; 2 grandchildren, Jack and Undine Weaver. Funeral services Saturday, 2 p. m., at the J. E. Grimes Funeral Home, Pickerington. Burial Violet cemetery.

Sarah Ann MASON, daughter of Henry MASON (b. 11 July 1802 in MD) and Margaret TAYLOR, married 1st Jesse MASON in 1841 in Fairfield Co., OH. Jesse died in 1864 and Sarah Ann married 2nd David SCOTT in 1866 in Fairfield Co., OH. That is the only record we have for David. Sarah and David had one child, a daughter named Luretta "Rhetta" SCOTT born about 1867/1868. Sarah Ann married 3rd Andrew EDWARD / EDWARDS in 1870 in Fairfield Co., OH and he died in 1878.

For quite sometime we did not know what happened to Luretta / Rhetta SCOTT. She was 13 years old in 1880 and residing with her brother-in-law and half-sister, John and Mary Elizabeth (MASON) SPIERGY / SPEARKY, & family, her mother, and half-brother, Elmer MASON. No sign of her in 1900 and could not find a marriage or death for her.

Nelson and Elizabeth (MARSHALL) MASON's grandson, George W. MASON, married his second wife, Retta MANVILLE, in 1896 in Fairfield Co., OH. This information was from some hand written notes made by my mother and a cousin-in-law as they looked through the Fairfield Co. marriage records after 1880 for Masons while my third cousin and I were looking through probate packets.

The 1900 Census record indicated George had 3 children by his first wife, Elizabeth "Bettie" BROWN, and 1 child, named Eva, by his second wife . The birth record for Eva found in the Fairfield Co. Birth records Vol. 3 gave her mother's maiden name as Rettie Manvil, so we had no reason to suspect that MANVILLE was not her maiden name.

I found an Eva Mason WEAVER in the Cemeteries of Violet Township Fairfield County, Ohio compiled & published by The Fairfield County Chapter of The Ohio Genealogical Society with the correct birth date and buried by relatives of George W. MASON. No Weaver husband buried there so I did not know who she married. I found her in the online Ohio Death Index on the OHS website and obtained a copy of her death certificate. The death certificate gave me a first name for her husband, but I was certainly surprised to see her mother's maiden name listed as "Loretta Scott, b. Pickerington, Ohio"!

An obit for Eva Mason Weaver in the Columbus Dispatch newspaper said she was survived her mother, Retta MYERS. A letter to the Fairfield County Courthouse produced copies of 3 out of the 4 requested marriage records. No marriage for a Retta/Loretta/etc. SCOTT to a MANVILLE. The license for her marriage to George W. MASON has her name as Mrs. Retta MANVILLE (no Mrs. on the return so it was easy to miss). The marriage for Eva MASON to Elza WEAVER. Most importantly, Retta's marriage to Albert MYERS in 1924 which gives her father's name as David SCOTT and her mother's maiden name as Sarah MASON.

The 1880 Census has Rhetta's father born in Ohio, however, the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 census records say her father was born in England.

Neither Retta / Loretta or her husband George W. MASON are in the Cemeteries of Violet Township Fairfield County, Ohio compiled by The Fairfield County Chapter of The Ohio Genealogical Society, so apparently they did not have tombstones to read.
Eva MASON married Elza Soliday WEAVER (found on the 1930 Census as Ellsworth) in Fairfield Co., OH. She is found in the Fairfield Co. Birth Records Vol. 3 (1888-1899) as Eva Mary E. MASON, Father George W. MASON, Mother's maiden name Rettie MANVIL. Turns out Rettie's maiden name was not MANVIL but SCOTT (Eva's death certificate & the license for Rettie's 3rd marriage) and Eva has a double Mason connection.

Eva's father, George W. MASON, was the son of John W. MASON & Elizabeth L. FLICK who married in Fairfield Co., OH in 1860. John W. MASON was b. in MD, son of Nelson MASON & Elizabeth MARSHALL who md. in Baltimore, Baltimore Co., MD in 1833 and migrated to Violet Twp., Fairfield Co. about 1848.

Loretta (Luretta, "Retta", "Rettie", "Rhetta") SCOTT, mother of Eva, was the daughter of Sarah Ann MASON and her second husband, David SCOTT. Sarah Ann MASON was the daughter of Henry MASON (b. 11 July 1802 in MD) and Margaret TAYLOR who resided in Violet Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio most of their lives.

OBIT: Columbus Dispatch, Date Saturday, May 25, 1935; page 2 - WEAVER---Eva Mason, 36, Pickerington, Friday. Survived by husband, E. S. Weaver; son, Jack; daughter, Undine; mother, Retta Myers; sister, Lucille Mason; brother, Walter Mason. Members of O. E. S. and Rebekahs. Funeral Sunday 2:30 at Pickerington M. E. church. Burial Violet cemetery by J. E. Grimes.

Eva Mason WEAVER is found on p. 64 of Cemeteries of Violet Township Fairfield County, Ohio compiled by The Fairfield County Chapter of The Ohio Genealogical Society.

Her husband, Elza S. WEAVER, died in 1975 and is found on p. 20 of Cemeteries of Liberty Township Fairfield County, Ohio compiled by the Fairfield County Chapter of The Ohio Genealogical Society, buried in the Old Basil Cemetery.
