Liberty Township Early Settlers

Searching for researchers that have ancestors to any of the surnames mentioned at the end of this posting. All of which were early settlers of Liberty Twp., Delaware Co., Ohio

I have a couple of letters written in the early 1800's that was written to some of my ancestors, and information taken from a 1916 newspaper.

I know some of the history about the people mentioned, but have questions about a couple, that I am hoping either a family reseacher or a Delaware Co. historian can help me with with the questions I have.

I will be happy to send anyone a transcribed copy of the letters and article, if they are willing to help me.

The names are:
Harden, Hardin, Friend(s), Patten (Patton), Noggle (Nogle), Spangler, Dodge, Humphrey(s), Clark, Cole, and Dodge And possibly....Green(e), Spencer, Goodrich.

All these surnames are inter-related by marriage in one way or another.

Hope someone can help, and who knows.....The information that I have, could possibly help someone break down their brick wall.

Hello Debra,

I am interested in a Rosanna Unknown who married an Unknown Clark in the early 1800s in the Ohio area. If you type in Susanna Clark and George Girkey, you'll find the posting for a family tree I just posted on Ancestry.com. I am also interested in an Unknown Green(e) who had a daughter, Catherine Green(e), that married my grandfather, Jacob Mullen in the early 1800s. I'm unsure of the townships but Delaware wasn't overcrowded in those days. I would be happy to exchange info on what I have. I do have Catherine Green(e) Mullen's death certificate but it doesn't mention her parents. She died in Van Wert Co., OH near her sons.

Jenny;
I noticed the middle name of Cyder in your post. Cryder is a very popular name in Delaware Co. Have you checked with the Delaware Co. Historical Society located here..

Good luck in your search.

Jennifer;
Michelle is right. The name of Cryder and Crider seems to be common in Delaware Co., Ohio. But there may be a connection to your Henry Cryder Hardin to the COLE families (John or Ichabod COLE) of Liberty Twp., Delaware Co.

The reason why I think this is becasue one of Ichabod Cole's children, was Henry Crider or Cryder COLE. The name of Samuel HARDEN is connected to this family. He married a Harriet Greene who was a 1st cousin of John and Ichabod. Her mother was Elizabeth (COLE) Greene who was John and Ichabod's sister. In 1830 and '40 Samuel and Harriet HARDEN was living in Liberty Twp., Delaware Co., Ohio. I don't know if your Henry is one of their son's or not. I only have Oliver P. (killed in the Civil War), Samuel Jr. and Wallace. They may of had more children, but I'm not sure because I haven't gotten that far in my research about them.

Did your Henry Hardin stay in Delaware Co. or did he go out west, possibly to LaSalle Co., Illinois or Lake Co. Illinois? Who did he marry?
If I had some more information about him, it could provide clues into finding out who his parents were.

BINGO!!! There is with out a doubt that your Henry Cryder Hardin had some kind of connection to the family of Ichabod COLE. Check out the COLE and Hardin burials that is in the Cole/Hardin Cemetery in Liberty Township, Delaware County, Ohio.

Cole, Elizabeth --/--/1788 07/26/1875
Cole, Elizabeth Ann 09/06/1839
Cole, Ichabod 06/31/1781 01/--/1878
Harden, child 04/14/1881
Hardin, Alice Hulda 01/28/1852 08/06/1943
Hardin, Caroline 07/12/1828 06/24/1911
Hardin, Dewey --/--/1893 --/--/1900
Hardin, Henry Creter (Cryder?) 08/16/1848 09/09/1934
Hardin, Ichabod E. 07/30/1864 07/02/1940
Hardin, Isaac 10/07/1823 01/31/1912
Hardin, Mary Clementine 03/17/1868 06/21/1943

The Ichabod COLE buried in this cemetery was the s/o John COLE and Susannah Salisbury from Washington County, Ohio. Ichabod and John, Jr. were the two sons who settled in Delaware Co.

In 1820 Ichabod & John's niece, Sylvina GREENE (mother: Elizabeth COLE GREENE) and her husband, Joel DODGE were also living in Liberty Township, Delaware Co., Ohio. But by 1840 Sylvina and Joel DODGE were back in Washington County, Ohio. About the year of 1854 they headed west and settled in Brookfield, LaSalle Co., Illinois, where they both died and is buried in the Maxton Cemetery there.

Another neice of Ichabod and John COLE was the sister of Sylvina GREENE DODGE. Her name was Harriet GREENE (mother: Elizabeth COLE GREENE). She married Samuel HARDEN on October 28, 1824 in Washington County, Ohio. In 1830 and 1840 they were living in Liberty Township, Delaware County, Ohio. By 1850 they are in Grand Rapids Twp., LaSalle County, Illinois. Here is the information obtained from the 1850 census for them:

1850 Census, Grand Rapids, LaSalle Co., Illinois Sept. 24, 1850
Saml. HARDEN 49 Farmer Vt.
Harriet 49 Ohio
Wallace 15 Ohio
Oliver 15 Ohio
Saml. 13 Ohio

I believe that Joel and Sylvina DODGE and the brother of Sylvina and Harriet's whose name was Willard GREENE, Jr. all went to LaSalle Co., Illinois to be close to their Aunt Harriet and Uncle Samuel HARDEN.

If anyone can establish a connection with Samuel HARDEN and Henry Cryder Hardin, please let Jennifer Houchin and I know.

Surnames: COLE, PATTEN,
My research indicates that John Cole, who is shown in 1820 and 1830 Census for Delaware County (Liberty)is likely my 4th great grandfather. Sketchy information is he married a "Nancy" (last name unknown) in OH in about 1805, but I have not verified. I also have a 4th great grandfather, Richard Patten (Patton) who I have tracked back to Darke Co. Ohio in 1826, but not further back than that. These two individuals ended up in Indiana and had kids get married to each other (Cole - PATTEN link). Back to John Cole and Delaware County. He had children as follows: Samuel (1808), Isaac (1810), Sally (1812), Mary (1814), Ramona? (1815), Susannah (1817), Abigail (1819), Lydia (1821), Nancy (1824), twins James Jerome and John Durban (1826), Phillip (1829) and Eady Jonah (1833). Am not sure how many were born in Delaware County. It appears that one of the 3 girls born 1812-1815 had died by 1820 census. I do not see any burial records on Delaware County web site so that is another unknown. If any of this rings a bell, I would appreciate knowing it. I cannot locate this Cole family in any 1840 Census. Thanks, Chuck Hawkins (chawkins@wvi.com)

John Cole's wife was Nancy HARDIN (Harden). He was the son of Nathan Cole and Mary Daufet Jett. I believe that she could of been the brother of my Samuel Harden that married Harret Greene. HarrieT's mother was Elizabeth Cole. Elizabeth Cole was Nathan's 1/2 sister.

And yes......The Cole, HARDIN (Harden), Patten (Patton), and Friend Families in Washington and Delaware counties all inter-married each other.

Are you descended from the Richard Patten (Patton) that was the son of William & Mary (Harden) Patton? Richard's sister was Ruth Patton?

Click the link below, and you will see how this all comes together. By starting with John Cole, and Nancy HARDIN(Harden).

http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&...

DON'T FORGET TO SEE THE 'INDEX' OF MY SITE. THERE YOU CAN SEEN ALL THE Harden, Patton, Cole NAMES IN MY DATABASE.

I have a copy of the below "originial" 1839 letter that was written by Harriet Greene Harden to her sister Sylvina & her husband, Joel Dodge (My 4th Gr. Grandparents). It it she mentions, Ruth Patton, John Harden, Sally & George Friend. Sally's maiden name was Harden. She was the sister of Samuel Harden, and Mary Harden, who married William Patton.

Below is a transcribed version of a copy of a letter written by Harriet (Greene) Harden to her sister, Sylvinia (Greene) Dodge on May 13, 1839. (Found the copy of the 'orginial' letter' in the Dodge family file at the Washington Co., Ohio Historical & Genealogy Library.) I believe that Harriet (Greene) Harden was living in Liberty Twp, Delaware County, Ohio (census 1830 & '40) at the time she wrote this letter. In 1849 they were living somewhere in Iowa (fr. Julia Cutler's Diary), but by 1850 they were in La Salle Co., Illinois. Samuel Harden died in LaSalle Co., 1856. Harriet died ??? in Sheldon, Iroquios Co., Illinois according to the 1882 book "Counties of Porter and Lake Indiana." The book does not give the state or county she died. Thanks to Teri Gregg, she sent me the death record for Harriet.

This letter was hard to read at times, and took some time decipering the old handwriting styles when transcribing it, with sometimes I had to use a magnifying glass.
(The ____ (spaces indicate that it was unreadable) The ?'s indicate that the word was questionable. There were no periods or captial letters to indicate the beginning and ending of a sentence. Only the "I"s and names were captialized. This is typed just as it was written with leaving 3 spaces to seperate sentences).
