Cleo Dettrow is not listed in the Ohio Death Index unless she remarried, then possibly. But of the two possible matches neither lady had a middle initial of F or P.

You could try the Ohioana Room at the Defiance County Library, http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ohdefian/, for an obit. It appears that the site has been neglected and some of the links are broken but there is an email link for questions.

I live about 3 miles from Clinker Cemetery. Will check the Cemetery Records Book for that cemetery for the names you listed. I believe the books were made from the information from the cemetery records. To talk with someone that has the actual records you would need to talk to a Tiffin Township Trustee. The website says they are:
Richard Burk (419) 428-4408
Brady Woolace (419) 428-6000
Thomas Henry (419) 428-4461

SPEISER burials in the Clinker Cemetery

I have several family members with the SPEISER surname that are said to be buried in the Clinker Cemetery in Tiffin Twp. On my trip to Ohio last summer, I walked the cemetery and found only one headstone (John Speiser). Perhaps someone would be so kind as to check the cemetery index books to see what information is available for the individuals listed below. Further, does anyone know where I might get access to the actual cemetery plot records for Clinker?

Gottfried Speiser, b. 24 Aug 1836, d. 26 Sep 1925
Carolina (Hocker) Speiser, b. Sep 1840, d. 08 Apr 1874
Fredericka "Dora" or "Reka" (Shultz) Speiser, b. 17 Sep 1853, d. 07 Apr 1933

Carolina was Gottfried's first wife and Fredericka was the second. John Speiser was a son of Gottfried and Fredericka.

I'm planning a trip to northwest Ohio again this summer and plan to be in several counties including Defiance and Williams.

Regards,

Don Kinzer
Beaverton, OR
Anna's obit says Dunkard Cemetery but the paragraph after her funeral says she was buried in Tittle Cemetery (which is Metz/Tittle Cemetery). That was from the Crescent News Thursday June 12, 1919 Page 5.

Clarence's obit says he was buried on the Tittle Farm (also Metz/Tittle Cemetery). Defiance Crescent News Monday March 13, 1905.

Both Anna and Clarence died in Defiance County they are listed in the Death Records Book. But there is no listing for them in any Cemetery in Defiance County. The Cemetery Books were created between 1978 and 1982. As of that time there were no stones for them. I have seen stones placed for people after the books were created. So I took a drive out to Metz/Tittle Cemetery to have a look. The Cemetery looks like it is on someone's property so I knocked on the door. No answer so I didn't go into the Cemetery and look. I did notice that most of the stones were very old, not many new stones.

I took a picture of the Cemetery from the road. If you would like to see it, please email me you email address and I will send it over.

My best guess is both Clarence and Anna are in that Cemetery without stones.

Julie

I checked the cemetery books and could not find them anywhere in Defiance County. Those books, I think, are compiled from people walking the cemetery. So they must not have a stone. You would probably need to contact Poplar Ridge church to see if they have records relating to ALL people buried at Poplar Ridge cemetery. They probably are there.

I stopped at Metz-Tittle Cemetery yesterday and they are not buried there. On defiancecountygenealogy.org, German Baptist church aka Dunkard church was formed at Domersville and Flory Roads in 1850. Poplar Ridge is the name of the church there now. My guess is they are in Poplar Ridge Cemetery but have no stone. I can stop and look at the cemetery books to check...shouldn't take too long.

Tittle (1866-1905).

As a side note, several of Anna's siblings (and their families) are buried in the Poplar Ridge Cemetery including my great grandfather Alexander Hane. Many of these family members do have memorials on Find-a-Grave, some of which I created.

Don Kinzer

The website www.defiancecountygenealogy.org should give you the info you're looking for. The church at Domersville and Flory is Poplar Ridge but its cemetery is located over on Adams Ridge Road. The cemetery you're probably looking for is Metz-Tittle cemetery aka Tittle cemetery located near the intersection of Adams Ridge Road and Independence Road. Do you use findagrave.com? Both cemeteries are there. I have seen both cemeteries at findagrave.com and there are Tittle graves at both of them.

FLORY is one of the surnames mentioned in connection with the group; one of the ministers was a John FLORY. And the Dunkard references i'm finding in the obituaries are up to about 1920.
FWIW

Ken Thompson (kth0mpsn@yahoo.com)
Moline Acres (North StLouis county) MO

Thanks to all for the information. I had seen the Brethren Church at Domersville and Flory Roads and wondered if that might be the church. The Google Maps satellite view of the vicinity suggests that there might be a cemetery there. I have contacted the Defiance Co. Chapter of the OGS asking about Dunkard Cemetery.

Don Kinzer

The Church was located at the corner of Domersville and Flory Roads. The Dunkards worshiped in homes until they joined with the Baptists in 1850. In 1867 the church became a Brethren church. There doesn't seem to be a location given/known for the cemetery. And be assured, I am not smart; this is from a Google search. Aloha!

Here are some excerpts referring to Dunkard churches & cemeteries:
"from the Dunkard Church to the German Baptist Cemetery."
"the Dunkard Church in Adams Township."
"the Dunkard Church in South Richland."

Am wondering if 'Dunkard' = 'German Baptist'?

Let me check with someone who lives nearby (Henry County); will get back to you.

On the 1932 death certificate for a member of the Tittle family the burial location is noted as "Dunkard Cemetery, Defiance Co.". Another Tittle family member's death certificate (1919, Defiance Co.) simply notes "Dunkard". I can't find any information on such a cemetery in Defiance Co. The nearest Dunkard Cemetery seems to be in Van Wert Co. with only 68 memorials on the Find-a-Grave site.

Does anyone know if there existed a Dunkard Cemetery in Defiance Co. and, if so, what became of it?

Regards,

Don Kinzer
Beaverton, OR

Hello, I wondered if you would be willing to look up an obit for me please? My GGGreat Grandpa died in Hicksville in 1892. I found a brief obit when I traveled there from Az. in 2006, but I believe there is another one, as the one I found just said his funeral was postponed due to family coming & were delayed.
THank you very much

carol in az.

Lewis burials at the Rohn Cemetery

I have noted at findagrave.com several burials of persons with the surname of Lewis at the Rohn Cemetery in Defiance County, Ohio. I have been intrigued with the names of some of these Lewis' burials at this cemetery as they might include a son of Henry Lewis (1770-1824) of Uwchlan, Chester County, Pennsylvania who was a James R Lewis (B: 1803, Uwchlan, Chester, Pennsylvania; D; 1879, Jewel, Defience. Ohio). At findagrave at the Rohn Cemetery is a James R Lewis (1808-1875) who might be the James R Lewis, son of Henry Lewis. Another interesting Lewis burial at the Rohn Cemetery is a Benzet Lewis (?-?). A son of James R Lewis that I have is a Benazetta Lewis, who was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania in about 1836. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have information on the above Lewis'.

Obit for Harlan G Sullivan needed

Is there anyone that could look up an obit for Harlan G. Sullivan who died in Defiance on 14 June 2006? There is an obit on June 15 and 18 in the Crescent-News but I can't get a copy off the internet without subscribing to the newspaper. I live in Washington state and don't need a subscription. A transcribed copy of the obit would be fine. Assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Sherry Ray
sherraygen@aol.com
