Obit or Castine Cemetery help please - Mary Wheeler Tishman

I would like to find information on the husband and/or children of Mary Wheeler Tishman. She was the daughter of William Wilbur and Julia (Brown) Wheeler. Mary was born about 1871. In 1880 she was living with her parents in Butler Township, Darke County. I cannot locate her for the next 50 years.

The Preble County library website had a death notice for Mary (Wheeler) Tishman. Based on the brothers named in the death notice, this is the right woman. Mary Tishman died in Indianapolis in 1933, age 63. She was buried at Castine Cemetery. The obit file gives only the year of her death, not the exact date.

I need any information on her exact date of death, an obituary, a cemetery listing, or anything that might lead me to the name of her husband or any children.

It is possible that the name Tishman is not exactly correct. I cannot find any Mary Tishman who seems to be the correct woman in any census 1900-1930.

Can anyone help with a cemetery record, obit, marriage record, or any tidbits or clues?

Thanks.

Sharon

Allen Township Information

The 1840 census shows my ancestor, Jacob Shire, living between Samuel (Zerby?) and Jacob Riegle (son of George Riegle?). I'm losing hair trying to find additional information about this ancestor and was hoping to find clues in Allen Township. If there is anyone out there that could provide any thoughts and/or leads I would be forever grateful.

I have found evidence that my ancestors belonged to the United Brethren church in Darke County Ohio and later in Crawford County Illinois. I noticed in the Darke County history that there was an early United Brethren Church in Allen Township near Rossville. I can't find anything on-line regarding this church, so I don't know when it was built or when/where the first congregations met.

My family showed up in Wayne Township in the 1850 census, but I don't know when they moved from Allen Township.

I am convinced that they spoke German, or at least attended German sermons. I feel strongly that my ancestors followed the United Brethren faith from Pennsylvania, but I accept that I could be wrong about that. But if they didn't attend United Brethren congregations in Allen Township, then I believe they attended early German sermons in that area.

I read about Bishop John Seibert and Rev. T. Heistand in the Darke County History as early preachers, however I can't find further information on-line about either of them. Perhaps there is a clue about my family in any early church records that may exist?

It appears my family didn't own any land while in Darke County. Does anyone know what kind of records I can look for (and where) that might have a chance of listing my ancestor's name(s)? Also, does anyone know of any early Allen Township records that can be found that might prove helpful?

I apologize for the long babbling, but I wanted to share the type of information that I had available to potentially provide some insight into what may or may not be helpful.

I appreciate any help at all that anyone could provide.

Thanks!

Dan
dashire@comcast.net
I'm looking for more information on Benjamin Edward Lutz particularly his death. He was married on 01 Apr 1914 to Iva Alberta Ripley of Wood County, West Virginia. Their marriage license says that he was 22 at the time making his birth year about 1893 and was born in Greenville, Pennsylvania but I think they were meaning Ohio. He and Iva had two children, Eleanor Christina Lutz (1916-1975) and Jack Edward Lutz (1919-unknown). His parents names were Benjamin Lutz and Mary Christina (maiden name unknown).

Please check out the new page and let me know what you think or if you can help with any other information. It now loads much faster and is more user-friendly for people wanting to only view a certain county.
1900 Darke census lists A.C. or J.C. SNYDER; William, Carrie, and Vera RANTZ and Helen COVAULT with her son Paul COVAULT. Did Abby (JONES), widow of Abraham RANTZ, remarry, about 1890-96 to Mr. SNYDER? Is Helen COVAULT, in 1900, the daughter listed as Nellie RANTZ in 1880 Mercer Co (based on age)? Helen married ca 1896 but no husband present in 1900 (tho she is not shown as a widow).

Aarrggh. It's way too confusing!

Among the family names are: HANES, BONHAM, CONDON, WEISENBARGER, McCLAIN, HAPNER - and others.
A lot of these people had Darke County origins, but mirgrated over to Jay County, Indiana.
As noted in several of the pictures, I'm not sure just how everyone in the collection is related. If you happen to have information related to any of the people in the pictures, please send me an email, and I'll update the photo information.
The list of pictures is available at:
http://www.glengallagher.com/darkealbum.htm

Glen Gallagher
gallag70@fuse.net

Firth family near Greenville

The following from the Hist. of Mercer Co. (1907, p 395) mentions Phebe Jones who m O. A. Firth (maybe C. A. Firth?). I find no other trace of either in the federal ceneuses once she married, tho she is with her parents, Edward and Mary, back in 1880 before she married. There is a Firth family in the Greenville area in 1910 but not mine. Any hints?

WALKER

Hi-
Can anyone help with my Walker 'problem'...Alexander Walker was born in VA 1812 (place unknown), father allegedly James Walker who allegedly was in the War of 1812. Alexander shows up in Miami Co. OH marrying Catherine Shepherd in 1833, and in federal censuses for Mercer and Darke Counties OH (same location, boundary changed) in 1840 and 1850.
In 1856 the family moved to St. Clair Co. MO, where I have found quite a lot of info for him and descendants. He died there while probate judge in 1876.

Children of Alexander and Catherine WALKER are:
John N., b. 1834, married Mary Riegel in OH, d. in MO in 1914.
Hannah M., b. 1836, married Henry Denney in OH & died in MO in 1861.
James M., b. 1838, married Elizabeth Conner in MO, died in MO in 1863.
David, b. 1842, married Frances E. Kellerman in MO, died in MO 1917.
Nemiah (or Nehemiah) b. 1844, no marriage found, died in MO 1861
Jeremiah, b. 1848, married Eliza Jane Lee in MO, lived in Pettis Co. MO, died in 1926
Nancy Olive Jane, b. 1851, married John M. Francis in MO, died in 1931 in MO.
Francis G., b. 1857, died before 1870 in MO
Amanda Elizabeth ('Libbie') b. 1859, married Joseph H. Smith in MO, died in 1944 in KS.

Although I find James Walkers in the Mercer/Darke Co. OH censuses I can't tie them together.

Yes, I am trying to get DNA testing lined up but it will take awhile as I must rely on a very distant branch of the family that isn't very keen on the idea, so I keep trying....

Has anyone any Walkers that might be related at all?
Thanks...
Roma Walker Deakin

Glove Factory

Hello,

I have posted a picture taken in 1924 and short article about the Union City Glove Factory, owned by Julius and Jack Lewis. This concern, which flourished for at least thirteen years, was also known as the Union City Glove and Match Company. The photo and information was given to me courtesy of Billy J. Baker.

Billy and I would love to know more about this company but even more, would like to be able to identify more of the people in the photograph. There are 32 young women pictured and two males. As of Jan. 2007, we can identify only one person -- Billy's mother, Ethel Porter. So, if you had a young female in Darke Co. or Randolph Co. in the 1920s, please take a look to see if you might spot someone you can identify.

The information about the factory that we have so far is posted at: http://randolph.dcoweb.org/UCGlove.html and the picture (with a numbered key at the bottom of the page) is at: http://randolph.dcoweb.org/UCGlove2.html.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

--Jane Barr Torres
Mr. Richard Rininger - I found an old post (from 2002) stating that you were looking for obituary and burial information about Edward Jones. At this minute, I don't have this information, BUT it turns out that my Grandma's sister, Ruth Hinkle, married Edward's son, Ronald. I will be attending a family reunion in a little more than 2 weeks & his children will be in attendance. I hope that you find this message and reply to it - whether it's that you've found the information you were looking for, or that you're still in need of this information, and I will be happy to find out what I can.

Susan Thompson
St. Paris, OH
Looking for information on Lewis Nagel from Greenville. He and his family were on the 1910 census and I cannot locate him after that. His wife, Ida, passed away April 1911. On the 1920 census their youngest daughter, Mary[born 1910], was in the childrens home in Greenville. But, I cannot locate him or his son Russell[born 1907] anywhere after that. Russell eventually ended up in Chicago, but I don't know when he arrived there. I can't locate him on the 1920 or 30 census'.
Lewis, born April 1880, was the son of Charles Nagel and Catherine Jenkinson. If anyone knows where Lewis went after 1910 please let me know.
Thank you.

I am looking for the parents of Caterine Jenkinson, who married Charles Nagel. What I would like to know is if the Catherine Jenkinson on the 1850 census is the same Catherine who married Charles Nagel around 1866. On the 1880 and 1900 census' it has Catherine's parents as being born in Pennsylvania. The only Catherine Jenkinson I can find, born in Ohio and lives in Darke County, is on the 1850 census. On that census her parents are George and Catherine Jenkinson, but it has them born in Ohio and not Pennsylvania. Does anyone know if this is the same Catherine.
Also Catherine Nagel's middle name is Ann and the 1850 census has Catherine A. Jenkinson.

I am a descendent of John A. and Maria Coleman. They emigrated from Hamburg, Germany, to the USA and arrived in Union City in about 1833. Their son William Coleman, my direct descendent, was born in Union City in 1835. The other children of John A. and Maria included Barbara, Margaret, Susan, Little Barbara, William, Rosena, and Leonard. John A. Coleman died in Union City in 1878. Maria died in Union City in 1884. They were members of a Lutheran church near Union City but I do not know which specific church it was. Eventually the family moved to the region near Boonville, Missouri. If anyone has any interest in this family, please let me know and I will share what I have with you.

I am interested in an entry for David Putman in the 1900 edition of "A Biographical History of Darke County Ohio". All the ones I'm finding on-line are only excerpts that deal with his father-in-law, Mark T. Mills. If anyone could provide me with the remainder of the entry, I'd be appreciative. Any information on David, his wife Sarah Mills, or their foster son Mills Putman Simison, would also be of interest.

Cassel Corner

I came across an old map of Darke County and found a place called Cassel Corner. It is at the North East corner of Southeastern Rd and Versailles Rd. about 4 miles south of
Versailles in Darke Coumty. Why was it called Cassel Corner? Does anyone know about it?
