I, too, have become hooked on this family. Seems to be lots of mystery surrounding them. Hard to find records to trace the movements of the family. I have to wonder if the fact that this appears to be a mixed race marriage has something to do with them staying under the radar. In the early 1900's, I don't think society approved of marriage between the races.

Here is the image of the 1880 census listing James as an infant living with his family in Chillicothe Ohio. Also, the 1903 marriage license of James and Bertha. the interesting thing about the marriage license is the return was never filled out listing the actual date of marriage. Was this because someone forgot to fill it our, or did the marriage never take place? Although, in the 1910 census James is listed as married even though that was only 4 months before he married Lizzie.

I still haven't had any luck finding a death record for Lizzie. Is it possible she remarried after the death of James.

I hope eventually you will be able to find all the information about Lizzie to complete your family tree.
Now you have me hooked on this family.

I found James in 1870 in Chillicothe with his mother and grandmother. I only found them at HeritageQuestOnline.com. You can access that through your local library, in the US at least. Talk to your reference librarian.

1870 Census, 3-WD; CHILLICOTHE, Ross Co, Ohio
on Mechanic St
Morris Molly, 66, black, head, widowed or divorced, wash? woman, born in Virginia, cannot read or write
Morris, Samuel, 29, black, son, single, school teacher,
Morris, Issac, 27, black, son, single, laborer, unemployed 8 months in past year
Garland, Margaret, 31, black, daughter, married, domestic servant
Garland, Mamie, 11, black, granddaughter, single,
Garland, James E, 3/12, born in March, black, grandson, single,
all others: born in Ohio
note: Isaac, Mamie, and James E were all checked off as maimed, crippled, or disabled in some other way

http://persi.heritagequestonline.com/hqoweb/library/do/censu...

-----------
James had been previously married, although when he married Lizzie he said he had not:

8 Aug 1903
Marriage, Cleveland, Ohio
James Garland, no age, born: Chillicothe, Ohio
Father: Wm Garland
Mother: Margaret Morris
no race information
and: Bertha Goodman, 19, born: Cleveland, Ohio
Father: Jno. I don't think you are going to find descendants for them.

That is an interesting article about how the census takers determined the race of the respondent. That could answer a question about this Lizzie/James confusion. Perhaps James was black/mulatto and Lizzie was white. The 1910 census record (when he was a servant in a boarding house) and the death certificate list him as black/colored. However in 1930 when Lizzie probably answered the door to the census taker, he would have seen her race and assumed the husband to be the same. Very interesting. I still have not been able to locate them in the 1920 census. I will start looking for Lizzie's death in the New England area in case she moved there after James' death.

I'm not familiar with this family but came across your post while going through the Cuyahoga county board.

There was just recently an interesting article called
"From Appearance to Identity: How Census Data Collection Changed Race in America" at http://www.psmag.com/culture/census-data-collection-changed-...

Up to and including the 1960 census, the race or color of a person was determined by the enumerator based on their appearance. From 1970 on, the census was taken by mail and people identified their own race.

A picture of James would be interesting.
Oh thank you!!!

I remember something. My mother told me many years ago that my father went by train, in New-England area to visit his aunt. I don't remember that my father stay away from home for a couple day. That means that I was realy young and I born in 1951.
If it's true he went there after 1947 and probably before 1955
Is Elizabeth could move in this area after her husband died!?!?

This link, if it's good, is the only I have for McCraig...

Many thanks again,

Johanne

I'm glad I was able to help you find a piece of your puzzle a few months ago. I have been looking for more information about James and Lizzie. I am a bit confused by some discrepancies I am finding in records. The 1937 death certificate shows James' race to be "colored" and his occupation to be "lather" (Lather - Installer of lath strips in old-time walls). A 1910 census shows a James Garland living in Cleveland, occupation "lather" and race "black". (This 1910 James was listed as married for 10 years; however, this census was taken 4 months before your James and Lizzie married). And to confuse things more, a 1930 census record shows a James and Elizabeth Garland living on E 63rd Cleveland, James as a custodian and the race of both as "white". No children lived with this couple.

The really confusing part is the 1937 James (colored) was born in Chillicothe Ohio around 1879 and the James who married Lizzie McCraig in 1910 was born in Chillicothe Ohio around 1879.

Are these men the same person or two different men of different races? I wish I could find James and Elizabeth in the 1920 census to see what the details were for James that year. I will keep looking for more records of the two of them and especially for a death record for Lizzie ( no luck yet on that)

I’m not related to any member of this family.

OH Vital Records -
. Ohio law established the Bureau of Vital Statistics on December 20, 1908. On that date, the mandatory registration of birth and death certificates occurred. Since that time, all birth and death certificates have been registered through our office.

Prior to September 7, 1949, marriages were record at the county probate courts as each county was formed. At that time, an index of all Ohio marriages was not maintained. It was not until 1949, that a statewide index of marriages that occurred in Ohio was created at the state level with the Ohio Department of Health, Office of Vital Statistics. While the state Office of Vital Statistics maintains indexes of all marriages, the county probate courts where the married couples applied for their license is where the official marriage certificate resides.

statement source -
Mark Kassouf
Compliance Manager/State Mass Fatality Planner/Chief Fraud Officer
Ohio Department of Health
Office of Vital Statistics
614-644-0165

Because Ohio first recorded deaths in 1867 you won't find any death record but there is a burial record (Vol 1, Pg. 82) for Lydia at https://familysearch.org based on info from "Cleveland Cemetery Interment Records, 1824-2001."

Bill

Death Record for Lydia Cardozo/Cardoza d. Cleveland May 1864

I'm trying to confirm the death of Lydia Cardozo/Cardoza, who was living in Cleveland when she died on May 10, 1864. I've searched the cemetery records and found an infant Cardozo who died on March 7, 1864 and was buried in the Woodland Cemetery, but no mention of Lydia Cardozo. There was a family connection: Henry Cardozo, the child's father, was Lydia's eldest son.

The Cardozos, who originated in Charleston, South Carolina, were black; they were described as "mulatto" in the US Census and as "colored" in the Cleveland city directory, where Henry Cardozo was listed between 1861 and 1867. The family is related to the Jewish Cardozos of Charleston.

Are there death certificates available for Cleveland in the year 1864? Where might I find them, and is it possible to search and obtain a copy?

I appreciate any help from the collective mind.

I did see one resource that showed they were married in Erie but could not find it and I knew they got married on that date as they were married for over 60 years. Nellie and George were my great grandparents and I remember them so well. I do have info on her family....at least her parent's names but little else. We have lost her sister, Maggie, but I have a picture of the daughter Pearl as a baby. Are we related through Nellie? Again thank you for your info and helping me close this gap.

Christi

I'm searching for my great grandparents marriage license/record. I had it in my hands when my great grand mother died on April 28, 1965 but I was too young to realize what it was and it has since disappeared. My great grandfather is George Henry Williams, born 14 Sept. 1880 in Mass. Great grandmother is Nellie Elizabeth Brittan born 16 Sep 1883. 1900 Census has them living in Cleveland and indicates they were married for one year at that time. They were married on 11 Jul 1899. in Cleveland but I cannot find any record of their license or marriage in the records index. Of course there is very little information in the index. Can anyone direct me to where else I should look for this document?

We are working on doing more research on family ancestry, etc. We would love to hear from you.
DENNIS CLARK BROWN, from Parma, OHIO, died on April 19, 2013.
He was a better grandpa than he was a dad, but he had some decent moments with his kids that involved nature walks, Geauga Lake, and watching campy horror films.
He enjoyed working at the local deli, with his friend Al, and he made really good sandwiches. He put a lot of thought into it and always put the sliced tomatoes separate so they didn't make the bread all wet and soggy.
He could cook anything on the grill, and he could grow anything in the garden.
He liked animals, especially birds, as well as flowers, trees, and well-tended gardens. He knew a lot about these things, as well as astronomy and metallurgy.
He also enjoyed reading National Geographic and the Smithsonian.
He hated rap music, people who took too long to make left turns, and the invention of the breathalyzer.
He loved his parents, Jack and Dorothy Brown and enjoyed his grandchildren.
He is survived by his mother, brothers, Gary and Keith Brown, and children, Heather, Meggin, Aaron and Hilary.
In spite of everything, he will be missed, especially by his grandchildren, Hailey, Clara and Simon.

Cuyahoga

Relative (?) was Abial Cushman, Sr. born 17 Feb 1793 in Thetford, VT and died about 28 Jan 1837 (buried 29Jan) in Cuyahoga, OH. His wife was Tabitha Keyes Cushman born 1805 in Genesee, NY and died 7 Mar 1886 in Collamer, Cuyahoga, OH. They had children Harmon Noble Cushman 1824-1889 and Ellen Cushman Luster 1835-1914 and Abial Cushman, Jr. 1827--??. This is the specific Abial I am trying to trace since the last record of him in Ohio was when a guardianship was established on 12 Nov 1842 at age 15 to end at age 21. There were some real estate transactions after 29 Jan 1837 where someone was supposedly asked to sign for Abial Sr. I can find no record of him after that; however, on 12 Dec 1848 in Montgomery, TN an Abial Cushman, my great great grandfather, married Elizabeth Bryant and in 1850 they appear on the Census in nearby Nashville showing that Abial was born about 1827 in Ohio. They are with my great grandfather W. A. Cushman born 1849. W.A. and Elizabeth Bryant Cushman appear on the 1860 Census across the state line in Christian, KY without Abial but an Abel Cashman born about 1827 in Ohio died of Consumption in Christian, KY on 30 Aug 1856 and I would like to be able to connect him with GGGF Abial Cushman and him with the Abial Jr. previously described. I had thought there might be some record of the guardianship being ended in 1848. So far no luck.

this is not uncommon, children, siblings or others continuing to operate as if the deceased person is still alive in order to skirt around inheritance rules or avoid paying other fines, fees and levies...

if your relative died childless and spouseless, its also possible their neighbors took advantage...

i've seen this before...

Thanks!
I also like challenges.
I have nailed down most of the family in Ohio using FamilySearch.org - Most of the births were recorded at St. John's Episcopal Church in Cleveland so they probably lived on a nearby farm. The records are in the library at Western Reserve Historical Society.
The big challenge is finding the family in N. Ireland without the mother's name.
The 1901 Irish census is too late to pick up someone born in 1800-1815.

I'm not related to the family, I just like a good challenge to find genealogy records. I will see if I can find their location in Cleveland, but I had already looked for them in the 1860 census with no luck. I will keep trying. That and city directories.

Have you tried the 1901/1911 Irish census to locate relatives in Ireland. You can find it at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

I have the 1870, 1880, 1900 and 1910 census records and death records. I am looking for their residence location in Ohio. They should have been in the 1860 census.
The other issue I am working on is the Ireland residence of Richard Gilpin 1827-1902 and his father John Gilpin and unknown mother so I can trace back earlier ancestors.
Are your ancestors part of this family?
