Currently researching several Co. Mayo immigrants and have learned of large numbers of them settling in Cleveland. What were the major employers in Cleveland in the middle 1800s? Some of the surnames in my lines are: Kilbane, Gallagher, Mc Hugh, Mc Ginty, Mc Laughlin/Mc Loughlin, Mc Cann, Gibbons, Burke, Bains/Baines, Barrett, Corrigan, Conway, Costello, Cooney, Coughlin, Grimes, Cleary, Sheridan, Sweeney. Would love to connect with others researching these lines. Thanks!

I am looking for information about Ellen Flynn Burke that married Thomas Burke in 1905. Both immigrated from County Mayo to Baltimore, MD. Ellen immigrated in 1904 and Thomas immigrated in 1896. In 1905, they married and moved to Cleveland.

Ellen Flynn is the sister of my great grandmother. She was born in 1884, daughter David Flynn and Mary McHale of Tawnaghmore, Kilbefad.

I believe Thomas Burke is also from the same Parish in County Mayo. The dates on the census indicate that he was born between 1868-1879. Thomas had a brother Pat that immigrated in 1905 to Cleveland.

If you are related or have any information that you can share about this family, I would love to hear from you.

Thank you.

Hi, Lynn!

Sorry to say that none of your names sound familiar. That's not to say that there may not be a connection, but I don't know of any. My ancestors came to Cleveland about 1860-1867 and moved on to WI. Have you looked at any County Mayo sites on Google.com? You may find some connections there. Best of luck!

Joni

Hi Joni !!! My ancestors the Sweeney girls came from murrevagh, county Mayo in the early 1920's, the irish were discriminated against when they came to the usa, they usually worked at hard labor, building railroads, skyscrapers, bridges, canals, but in Cleveland the irish eventually took over the police services and fire dept., my ancestor Bridget Sweeney changed her name after she got married to Grace. I live in Cleveland. Geordav

Geordav,

Post the full names of the Sweeney girls here and, if you know them, their dates of birth. I may have Naturalization documents on them.
