Hello....I'm looking for any information concerning Thomas J. WILLIAMS and Hannah ASHBY WILLIAMS. I know the couple lived in Crawford Co, Holmes Twp in 1880 as they are listed in the 1880 Census. They had a child in Ohio (not sure which county) in 1862, another in Sandusky, Wyandot Co in 1866, and other children (not sure what counties) up through 1879. I know they were in Cass Co, IN by 1889 when Thomas died. Could someone please help me. I'm at a dead end. I know Thomas and Hannah were born in Sussex, England. I'm searching for any information anyone could possibly help me with. Thanks so much.

Henry Rosenberger, buried St. Joseph, Crestline

Henry Rosenberger, born c 1854, Indiana or Illinois, married Mary M. Schmuck (1857-1940)daughter of Anthony Schmuck and Mary Fry. Henry died fairly young and is buried with Mary's parents in St. Joseph Cemetery, Crestline. "Richland County OH Cemetery Records" by the Richland Co Chapter of OGS give these dates: 'Henry Rosenberger died 14 Aug 1889, age 35' which do not seem to work with the birthdates of his known children.
1. Charles 'Rudy' b 11 Feb 1882, d 15 May 1948, buried St. Joseph.
2. Vernandena b c Sep 1885, living 1900 census, Vernon Twp
3, Albert J., b c Jun 1887, living 1900 census, Vernon Twp
4. Emma, (c 1889- 6 Mar 1959) , married John Jacob Greter. Both are buried St. Joseph
5. Jacob H. (a 'problem child') born c Oct 1893, 4 years after the death date of his father according to the cemetery records. Jacob married Anna Bayer. Both are buried St. Richard, Fulton Co, OH

Mary Schmuck Rosenburger married (2) Nicholas Kurtzman (1854-1923) c 1899, as his second wife. She died 1940 and both are buried Sacred Heart, Sharon Twp, Richland Co, OH. They had one child, Clarence born 5 Mar 1900. In the 1900 census, the family is in Vernon Twp, Crawford Co.

In the 1900 census, Jacob Rosenburger is listed as a step son of Nicholas Kurtzman. Is Jacob really a child of Henry? If not, who is his father? Also - in the 1900 census, Mary says that she has 6 children, 6 living. Who is the sixth child?

Uhl family living in Crawford Co. from late 1830's until at least 1870's

Searching for any info on the Uhl family living in Crawford County from at least the late 1830's until the late 1870's. Here is what I know:

John Henry Uhl b. in Germany married Elizabeth Linn and they had at least one child - John Jr. b. 1839 in Crawford County, OH. John Jr. married Margaret Rank b. abt 1838 also in Ohio. John Jr and Margaret were living in Lykens, Crawford County, in the 1860 census (this census shows that John Jr and Margaret were "married within the year). I cannot find the John Sr family in the 1850 census.

John Jr and Margaret had at least 7 children...with 6 of those born in Ohio...most likely in either Lykens or Holmes townships, Crawford County. I don't know when the family moved from Lykens to Holmes Township. The family moved to Indiana between 1877 and 1879. In the 1880 Indiana census, John's mother, Elizabeth, age 77, is living with them, however, her last name is NOT Uhl...it is Sheffer (the spelling may not be correct)...so she must have remarried at some time.

I would appreciate any and all help on this family. I can provide the names and ages of the children of the John Jr family, if necessary...but I got the information from census records - so it may not be completely accurate.

Thank you very much for your help!!!

The remains of Field W. Bush arrived here this morning from Florida and were laid to rest this afternoon in the family lot in Oakwood Cemetery. Mr. Bush died of angina pectoris, or disease of the heart, at Daytona, Fla., Feb. 23, 1896, and temporary burial was made at that place. The body, accompanied by his son, Eugene, lately of Utah, came the long journey in a hermetically sealed metallic casket, which, of course, was not opened here. The daughter, Mrs. Alfred, of Mt. Vernon, is also here. Other relatives and friends in this community assisted in the obsequies. The age of the deceased was about 63 years. Bucyrus was his home till about 25 years ago when he removed to Mansfield and afterward to Florida. His widow is the daughter of the late John Shull and wife.
VALENTINE, Horace Eugene, born 1859 in Crawford county

This from the Crawford county history, 1902, which I have a copy.
I am attempting to scan in all pages and then burn that onto a CD to offer folks interested.
I am no relation to Horace. Here is his biography and I am attaching to this message board post a photo as it appears in the book (if you are reading this on the mailing list, visit the Crawford Message board link to see the picture):
Page 26
HORACE EUGENE VALENTINE.
In the affairs of state, as taken aside from the extraordinary conditions of warfare, there are demanded men whose mental ken is as wide and whose generalship is as effective as those which ensure successful maneuvering of armed forces by the skilled commanders on the field of battle. The nation's welfare and prosperity may be said to hang as heavily upon individual discrimination and executive ability in the one case as the other. It requires master minds to marshal and organize the forces for political purposes and produce the best results by concerted effort. One of· the honored Democratic political leaders of Crawford county is Hon. Horace Eugene Valentine, who served for two terms as state senator from the thirty-first senatorial district, and his public record reflects credit upon his constituents and district which he represented. He is also an active man-of-affairs in business circles, being the cashier of the First National Bank of Bucyrus, which position he has occupied since 1898.
Mr. Valentine is one of the native sons of Crawford county, his birth having occurred in the village of Benton in Texas township, April 8, 1859. He represents an old New York family, his ancestors having come from the Empire state. His father, James Valentine, removed to Crawford county from the city of Syracuse, New York, about 1830, his wife and his parents coming with him. He secured a tract of land in Texas township and there devoted his energies to agricultural pursuits until his death, which occurred in the year 1861. His wife bore the maiden name of Angeline Clark. She was born near Syracuse, New York, and was a daughter of Edward Clark, who served in the New York Militia in the war of 1812. Mrs. Valentine was called to her final rest in 1866. They had four sons, the eldest being Edward, who enlisted for service in the Civil war and died in Libby prison; Jabez Clark,

Page 27
deceased; George B., deceased, and Horace Eugene. There was one daughter, Emily, now deceased.
Throughout his entire life Horace Eugene Valentine has been a resident of Crawford county. His preliminary education, acquired in the common schools, was supplemented by study in the Ohio Normal University, at Ada, Ohio, where he was graduated in the class of 1888. The following year he was elected county surveyor of Crawford county and was re-elected in 1892, serving continuously until 1895, covering a period of nearly seven consecutive years. Before his retirement from that office he was elected, as a Democrat, to the position of state senator to represent Crawford, Seneca and Wyandot counties, or the thirty-first district. He served for four years and filled the position so creditably that in 1897 he was re-elected. He was one of the active working members of the senate and gave to each question which came up for consideration earnest thought and study and left the impress of his individuality upon the legislation of the two terms served by him. He was the author of the anti·trust law of Ohio, known as the Valentine Anti-Trust Law. It was declared constitutional by the state supreme court and if enforced would effectually do away with injurious and unlawful trusts. His labors were untiring in behalf of the people and his record is creditable to the district which honored him.
In 1889 Mr. Valentine was united in marriage to Miss Josephine Nedry, of Texas township, a daughter of Joseph Nedry, one of the pioneer settlers and native sons of Crawford county, who is now seventy-five years of age. His father came to Ohio from Pennsylvania at a very early period in the development of the state. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Valentine have been born two children, Allen Gladstone, and Florence Emily.
Mr. Valentine is a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and on the political stage such is his popularity and such his personal magnetism that his appearance to address the people is the signal of due enthusiasm. He is a sturdy American character and a stalwart patriot, and has ever had the strongest admiration for our free institutions, being ever ready to make any personal sacrifice for their preservation.

J.N. Vantilburg, of Mansfield, and C.J. Gugler, of Galion, have been appointed administrators of the estate of Mrs. Emma Lee, of Galion, whose body was discovered some days after she died of cerebral hemorrhage at her home there. "George Davenport and Robert L. Hutchinson, guards, placed at the Lee residence at Galion by Coroner R.J. Caton, were digging around to secure room enough to turn around in the living room Sunday when they discovered $9,800 in government bonds lying under a chair on the floor." "This find outclassed that of Friday when a can of $20 gold pieces and a collection of nearly 300 silver dollars were found. There is no estimate of the value of the estate left by Mrs. Lee. She was the former wife of H.D. Lee, a millionaire manufacturer of St. Louis, who is said to be the owner of several stores in the West, and their marriage was annuled several years ago."
Eliza J.D. Green, 1876

Died, at her residence, in Crawford Co. (OH), Sept. 3d., 1876, Eliza J.D. Green, wife of Walter Green, aged 57 years, 8 months and 8 days. Mrs. Green was born in Richland County, O., December 25th., 1818, and was married to the husband she has left behind, November 1st., 1837. She united with the M.E. Church in the winter of '54 under the ministrations of Rev. S. Seymour. Some time afterward she transferred her membership to the Lutheran Church in Plymouth, and a few years ago, removing to her late home, too far from Plymouth to attend services there, she united with the Lutheran Church at Oakland, of which she was a member until her death. Living for some years in our midst she is remembered by her friends and neighbors as a devoted Christian woman. Coming into service in middle life, she seemed to be trying to atone for early neglect by assiduous service during the time that remained. Much of the after part of her life was one of pain and sickness, so that her attendance upon the services of God's house was very infrequent. During her last illness which had continued for several years, though it was apparent life must soon close for her, and the pain of parting was long before her; she yet enjoyed the consolations of religion, and was able to bear with patience the blow of the hand of God. Confidence in the love of God as her Father sustained her heart. Owing to the absence of her pastor, the services were conducted by Rev. Stough of Plymouth, after which her remains were carried to the graveyard followed by a large concourse of friends. [Shelby (OH) Independent News: 14 September 1876, Vol. 8, No. 47 as reprinted from the Plymouth (OH) Advertiser]

Seeking information on Mathew Black Mitchell and his family after 1850, when I found last census. His wife was Hannah Bryant Mitchell and they have several children who I was able to trace to other counties after 1850 but no sight of Mathew and Hannah. Their deaths weren't until 1878, so they should be in at least two more census after 1850. Any info will be appreciated.

Jenny Edmund

Died, at DeKalb, Ohio, January 25th., 1873, Philip Artz, aged 48 years, 2 mo. and 19 days. He was for some years a resident of Shelby, but of late resided at the place of his death. His sickness was short and death quite sudden. His neighbors speak of him as a quiet and peacable citizen. His sorrowing widow and interesting daughters are severely bereaved of a kind husband and indulgent father. Many neighbors followed his mortal remains to the place of burial, thus manifesting their unfeigned sympathy for the afflicted family in this their sad hour of tribulations. -- N.H.L.

source: Shelby (OH) Independent News: 30 January 1873, Vol. 5, No. 14

Mrs. Emilie Jane Meriman, formerly of Bucyrus, O., was on the 3d. day of September, 1872, married to Mons. Chas. Jean Marie Loyson, better known as Father Hyacinthe. The ceremony was performed in London, England, before the Magistrates of Marylebone District. The distinguished Reformer and his accomplished bride, left London the same day for Weybridge Heath, a little village an hour distant where the Forum says, "among flowers and pines and heather, in a charming little cottage, surrounded by lovely fields and beautiful walks, they will remain until November. Thence they go to Paris to take up their permanent abode." Mrs. Loyson (or Mrs. Hyacinthe) is a native of Oswego County, New York. Her father Amory Butterfield, removed to Melmore, Seneca Co., O., in July 1834, where he was killed by the falling of a beam at the raising of a Methodist meeting house on July 16th., 1836. She was married to Edwin R. Meriman, a Bucyrus merchant in 1851, at Melmore, O., who died about five years ago. She is a sister of C.W. Butterfield, of Bucyrus, Ohio. Through Rev. Henry Ward Beecher she procured the position of correspondent of the New York Times in Paris, during the lifetime of Henry J. Raymond. She is said to be an exceedingly beautiful woman, and as bright as she is beautiful. Mr. Raymond was enthusiastic in his praise for her, remarking the lightning rapidity of her mind, and the brilliancy of her literary performances.

source: Shelby (OH) Independent News: 26 September 1872, Vol. 4, No. 48

Mr. John M.
