Please check out the new page and let me know what you think or if you can help with any other information. It now loads much faster and is more user-friendly for people wanting to only view a certain county.

From
The Coshocton Times-Age
Coshocton, Ohio
(Coshocton County)
Thursday, April 23, 1914

MRS. DAVID BALO DIES
AFTER EXTENDED ILLNESS

Mrs. David Balo, aged seventy eight, died at her home near Adams Mills Wednesday afternoon at 4:30. She had been ill since last October with catarrh of the stomach, and owing to her advanced age, her recovery was scarcely expected. Mrs. Balo was born in Richland county and previous to her marriage in 1869 was Miss Maria Howell. She came to this county when a young woman, and has lived in the Adams Mills vicinity for many years. Mrs. Balo was a member of the Plains Methodist where she had charge of a class in the Sunday school. Her devotion to the church and her class work is well shown in the love and respect of the pupils, who will feel most keenly the loss of a kind and patient instructor.

The husband, David Balo, two daughters, Mrs. W. T. Marquand, and Miss Carrie Balo and one son, Joseph Balo, of Adams Mills, survive. One brother, Frank Newell, resides in Illinois.

Funeral services will be held at the home Friday afternoon and interment will be made in the Adams Mills cemtery.

I am looking for info on the John S. Kent and his wife Jane. According to the Census of 1900 John and his 3 children (Robert, Ella M and Carrie E) was living in Newcastle. The census indicated he was a widower. The youngest child Carrie E Kent was born abt November 1893. So I am assuming that Jane died sometime between 1893 and 1900. I would like to find any info on Jane and also Carrie E. This would be my great great grandmother and her daughter.

I would like to find Jane's maiden name, DOB, DOD, Her maiden name ....anything would be helpful in my search.

Varinia Atkinson

JONES, Benjamin Franklin, David, Mary - 1850-60s

I am trying to confirm that my GGGrandfather, Benjamin Franklin Jones, was born in Coshocton Co. His birth date, according to his death certificate and Obit. he was born in Coshocton Co. 30 Sept 1835 to David and Mary Jones. David was either born in Georgia or Virginia, Mary was born in Ohio or Virginia. Based on census reports from 1850 & 1860. I'm having trouble also finding any definate record of them, because of how common the names are. I know that in 1840 there was an older sister, but by 1830, Benjamin was 13 and the only child there. By 1860, he had married in Hendricks Co. Ind. and brought his wife, Lucinda, back to Newcastle to live with his parents. I'm doing this research from California, so any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
From Democratic Standard (Coshocton, Ohio) July 1, 1904, Pg 2

REMARKABLE JENNINGS FAMILY OF SOLDIERS

M. W. Wimmer, pension attorney, secured an original pension for Hiram W. Jennings, late a member of of Co. E, 142 Regiment, O.V.I. The rate of the pension is $12 per month, from May 2, 1904. The pension was granted under the new order. The above named soldier was one among the eight from one family, who were in the service being the children of Joseph and Abigail Jennings.

The eight are as follows:

Hiram W., of Company E. 142d, O.V.I., still living.
Reuben, of Company E, 142d Regiment, O.V.I., died while in army.
John C., of Company K, 24th Regiment, O.V.I., died in army.
W. H. of Company K, 32d Regiment, O.V.I., still living.
Leander, of Company G, 72d Regiment, O.V.I., still living.
Joseph, of Company M, 9th Regiment, Ohio Cavalry, still living.
Orin, of Company E, 142d Regiment, O.V.I., still living.
Alexander, of Company E, 143d Regiment, O.V.I., died at home.

Pension Attorney Wimmer says this is the only case he knows of in which one family sent so many brothers into the civil War and that it is possible that there is not another such case in Ohio.

Lucia Fleming Schoonover

In the 1930 Coshocton Co., Ohio Tomahawk Yearbook (found on-line) there is a Lucia Fleming Schoonover listed under the Class of 1924. I am very interested in this person, and would like any info or suggestions you might have.

Here's why:
My great-grandfather is Fleming Schoonover. He was born in PA in 1836, married 27 Feb 1857 in Snicarte, Mason Co., IL and died (we think) in the late 1870's. No indications that he ever lived in Ohio. His name, "Fleming Schoonover", is very rare -- I've never found another. So I was astounded to find a lady with exactly the same name. I've wondered if she might be a daughter or descendant?

I'm not even sure what specific questions to ask, but it seems that a census record containing her name would be of great interest since it should reveal her parents. That probably means a census for 1920, or maybe 1910.

Lucia was probably born about 1906, long after we think my G-G/F died. But I would really appreciate any insight about Lucia, or how I might pursue this issue.

Thanks for any help.

Bob Schoonover
Hi,

I am hoping that someone here might be able to help me. I am looking for the parents of Margaret Perry or any information related to her, her husband, or her children.

She was born in April of 1837 in Pennsylvania. Her parents came from Wales. She married Henry Shearn. I was abled to find Margaret in the 1860 census for Jackson Township, Coshocton Co., OH - In the 1870 census for Shenango Township, Mercer Co., PA - In the 1880 census for Brookfield Township, Trumbull Co., OH and in the 1900 census for Van Buren Township, Clay Co., Indiana. I also found civil war pension records that list her as Henry Shearn's widow. Margaret and Henry had 12 children.

I also know that Margaret died at the age of 71, in Carbon, Clay CO., Indiana and April 14, 1908.

Thanks
I am trying to locate information on lineage of Carey S. Dickerson. I believe he died in 1959. (They used to live on Route 5 (Coshocton). (I believe he was a minister?) His wife was Bertie and died just a few years back. They had several children. (Harold, Jack, Donis, James R. (deceased 1990) and three sisters, Jeanne, LeLeen (spelling?), and another daughter too? Does anyone have information to share on them? Or someone to contact? Thank you.

John Valentine Reiss was born in Coshocton (the town). I would like to find out what year he actually died. I have information that he died in 1896, 1899 or 1900. The family member who compiled the Reiss family information copied the papers many times and the last number from the date of death was dropped. I found him enumerated in 1900 however. I think that he must have died in the summer of 1900. He died of diptheria.

Martha died Nov 13, 1900 and is buried in Southlawn Cemetery, with I believe at least 1 infant daughter named Lila, who died Apr 22, 1896.
I found their children, all born Coshocton, OH:
Stella born Apr 1884
Joseph 5-1886
Paul 7-1893
Helen B. All born Coshocton Co. They were:
Margie Jan 1899
Revere (male)1902 d Nov 5, 1934
Merrel (twin) b 5-18-1904 died 6-4-1966
Earl (twin) 5-18-1904
Opal 1909
Evaline 1913
Irene 1915
Elnora 1917
Gertrude Feb 1910
If any of these people sound familiar please contact me
Linda M.
name of Roscoe/ Roscoe Village

Greetings from Southport, Lancashire, England.
I am researching aspects of the life of William Roscoe (1753-1831) of Liverpool. I found a website for Coshocton which gave a brief explanation of the origins of the name of Roscoe Village regarding the petition of 1830 to change the name from Caldersburgh. I was wondering if anyone could supply me with more information about the 1830 petition; is there a pamphlet I can get hold of or a more detailed web page? I want to know, if possible, the content of the petition; was it because of Roscoe's reputation as an abolitionist that the petitioners particularly admired him? Or his Unitarianism? Or his books on the Medici in Florence? I received leaflets and a helpful letter from Roscoe Village with the contact email for their historian, but the contact doesn't seem to bear fruit, so to speak. All information gratefully received and acknowledged in the text. I'll send a copy of the finished work to the Roscoe Village historical centre. Also, if anyone wants details about Roscoe of Liverpool, maybe I can help out; though I'm no genealogist I may be able to point out records of interest in local offices.
Best wishes,
Kevin Littlewood

The family is listed in the 1880 census at Bedford, but I can't find them anywhere after that.

What happened to them? And who were the parents of George W.
Francis Baker, born abt. 1823 in New York

I am seeking information on this family found in the 1850 census of Franklin township, Coshocton county, Ohio:
Frances Baker, male, age 27, born in New York
Rachel Baker, female, age 22, born in Ohio
George W. Baker, Male, age 1

The family is located in Tipton county, Indiana in the 1860 census. I am particularly interested in the youngest daughter listed in the 1860 census, Julia A, age 1. Julia Ann Baker was the name of my great grandmother. She married Frank Wright and can be found in the 1880 Tipton county census living with Susan Baker, age 58, widow, head of house. Julia is listed as her daughter and Frank is listed as her son-in-law.

I found a William Baker(b. NY 1825) and wife Susan (born Indiana 1835) living next door to Francis Baker in the 1860 Tipton county census. I believe that Willliam and Francis are probably brothers. Perhaps Susan took Julia in to raise or maybe Susan was Rachel's middle name. I am unable to find any marriage records for Frank or William.

If anyone has any information on this family, please reply.

What relation was Rezin to Esaias if any? I have proof that Rezin was the son of Zebediah and Elizabeth Lane Baker. I also have information that indicates Zebedian and Esaias were brothers, the sons of Maurice/Morris Baker. Morris Baker mention Easias, Charles and Ruth as his heirs but because Zebediah was already dead he isn't mentioned. Willing to share information.

obit lookup request for John Mirise who died 06 Jun 1865, lived in Jackson, Coshocton

Greetings,
I've searched the ancestry.com archived newspapers for several months and cannot find a Coshocton newspaper in the month of John's death (June). John was my 3rd great grandfather.

He can be found in several newspaper articles in the year before his death, calling for laborers to work in Nashville (where he died). I imagine he was on a work trip to Nashville and died there from a heart attack or such ailment.

The family bible says he died on 06 Jun 1865 in Nashville. I imagine it would have taken a few says for word to reach Coshocton county. His wife's obit in 1898 corroborates the location but not the date, however, he's not found in the census past 1860 so I'm confident that that date is correct.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Christa
Phoenix, AZ

------
9 Mar 1864, Coshocton Democrat
Wanted for the army of the Cumberland
100 first-class carpenters, to go to Nashville, Tennessee--60 dollars per month, tools found and transportation free.
Four Thousand Laborers
For six months, unless sooner discharged, in consequence of sickness or other cause.
$40 per month, and rations, for Laborers. Also any responsible person raising 30 laborers shall be entitled to $55 per month for superintending them.
Transportation free from any railroad station in Ohio to Nashville.
Men Wanted Immediately.
Pay to commence from the day of starting and rations free. For akk information address me in person, or by letter, at Roscoe or Coshocton, Ohio.
Columbus is my headquarters for shipping the men, and for any information on the subject, in my absence, call on Mr. Harrison of Columbus, who is my agent therefor.
By order of Captain Charles H. Irvine
Quartermaster, Nashville, Tennessee
Capt John Mirise
N.B. I am sending men on Mon and Tues of each week, from Columbus to Nashville
Jan 27, 1864
-------
2 Nov 1864, Coshocton Democrat
Nashville, TN, Oct 21, 1864
Mr. Editor: The majority of soldiers about this place are for McClellan. There was a McClellan meeting held at the Courthouse one evening last week. A lot of soldiers from the State House came down and raised h-ll, generally. It is generally supposed that Governor Johnson sent them there for that purpose. They have everything their own way here--because they have the power in their own hands, altho' the majority of the people are against them. There was no Coshocton County Democratic Tickets to be had here at the last election. John Mirise was here with the Republican Tickets. But thank God they defeated with all their gouging games. I expect they will try to guard the polls with bayonettes at the coming election--but we will vote for Mack, or die trying.
