While researching the family of John WEBB, my fourth great grandfather, an early settler of Columbiana Co., I became aware of the GASKILL & SHINN families. I am also directly related to the GASKILL family of Burlington Co., New Jersey through the marriage to the NEWBOLD Family. My third great grandmother was Beulah NEWBOLD, daughter of Brazillai and Elizabeth GASKILL NEWBOLD. Elizabeth was the daughter of Calab and Hope ROSSELL GASKILL. I have more information. I am interested in tying the Columbiana Co. GASKILL's and the Burlington MJ GASKILL's and any connection to the WEBB's of Columbiana Co. My mother is a (now 96) WEBB.
Charles Coulter Port Charlotte, FL

Not sure if anyone is still out there who can help with this request, but I am looking for some obituary and/or burial information for some relatives in the East Liverpool/East Palestine area.

If so, I am looking for information for the following folks:

Bridget Neville Barth (my great-great grandmother) died 28 Jul 1924 in East Liverpool – it is possible it may also be listed as Baird for some reason.

Margaret Neville Rafferty (I believe to be Bridget’s sister) died 29 Nov 1917 in East Palestine

Thomas Rafferty (Margaret’s husband) died 31 Mar 1921 in East Palestine

I’m not sure what newspapers are on file at the library there, but I am looking for several from the Reveille Echo and one from the Morning Journal. I have dates and other details that I think might help.

Here is what I have:
Margaret Neville Rafferty from “The Echo” - sometime after her death on 29 Nov 1917 (don’t have date of obituary) – also listed is the Morning Journal 2 Jun 1989 (I’m not sure why the date is so late)

Thomas Rafferty from “The Echo” 7 Apr 1921, page 14

I believe Bridget and Margaret’s sisters also lived in East Palestine – Mary Dolan and Mary McGoughan, but I do not have any dates for their deaths.

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated,

Darrin Barth
Hiram, GA
darrinbarth@bellsouth.net

In my records I have listed that some of my ancestors were buried in the Todd Family Cemetery in Wayne Township. Is anybody familiar with this cemetery, or family burial site.

Those I have listed as being buried on the family farm are:
Alexander Todd, died 3/31/1876
Elizabeth Withrow Todd, died 5/6/1855
Benjamin Todd, died 12/2/1841
John Withrow Todd, died 1921

Alexander Geddes is burried in 5th st cemetery in E Liverpool. He died 12/1/1847.

If you are familiar with any of my family members who are probably buried in Columbiana County, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Others who died in Columbiana County are:
Basil Todd, died cir. 1809
John Geddes, died 1829
Mary Jane Figley Todd, died Jan. 1916
Elizabeth Eells Todd, died 7/2/1873
George Eells, died 3/5/1892
Matilda S.
HEADS(S) Family of East Palestine, Ohio

I would like to connect with anyone who has information about these English Head(s):

My grandfather was Robert Ashbridge Heads, b. 1878 in Howden le Wear, Durham, England. My Ggrandfather was Isaac Head, b. 1838 in Dalston, Cumberland, England. My GGgrandfather was John Head,b. 1801 in Dalston, Cumberland, England; m. Elizabeth Mason, b.1808 in Dalston, Cumberland. It seems there were many families by the name of Head (Heads) in Cumberland...my branch moved to County Durham, England and in 1891 my Ggrandmother, Elizabeth Ashbridge Heads brought two of her sons, to the USA and settled in East Palestine, Columbiana Co., Ohio...where most of her Ashbridge family had come many years earlier. Isaac and their son "Jack" remained in Durham, England. Jack came to East Palestine, Ohio in 1905 and joined his mother and two brothers. I don't know if Isaac had died or if he chose to stay in England.
I am presently searching for descendants of Dr. Benjamin Bartram OGDEN and his son Dr. Charles Brawdy OGDEN who are researching their genealogy. After brief practice with a Dr. PLATT in his hometown of Lisbon, Dr. B. B. OGDEN began practice in East Liverpool and is thought to be the first physician there beginning ca. 1829. Dr. Charles OGDEN continued his fathers practice ca. 1878. Replies from descendants only please.

I recieved a death certificate on my Great Great Grandmother today, it states her birth in 1854 in Wellsville VA. I ran a search on Wellsville, VA and it comes up with Wellsvile, Ohio. I did find an old map from 1895 and it list it as Wells VA. Wellsville, VA and Wellsville, ohio seem to be the same place back then? i am confused on is Wellsville, VA the same place as Wellsville, Ohio and Wells VA?

This information is very important to me, I need it to send away for a birth certificate on my Great Grandfather, her son so i can find his father. Where would I send for a birth certificate 1852 birth from Wellsville VA or Ohio? Are they the same place?

Thank you,

Gloria

The death certificate for William F. McKee 1848-15 Mar 1918, Columbiana County, says he was buried in Hope Cemetery in Salem. I have not been able to find death certificates for other family members who might also be there. Does anyone have records that would show if any of these other McKees were buried in Hope Cemetery. Jane Doyle McKee b.1850- d. between 1900-1910; Amanda McKee b.1875-d. after 1930;other children Edward J., Clarence, Charles all born in the 1870's. I also wondered about William's father, James G. McKee born between 1814-1820 and died between 1891-1899 and William's mother, Amanda (Heacock) McKee born 1822 died between 1900-1910. Thanks in advance for any help. Nancy Smith

Peter S Smith m 1846( or 1845 typing from memory.) Elizabeth Allender, I believe they lived in Carroll Co 1850, 1860. then moved to Portage Co 1870 census, 1880 census Stark Co. Died 1894 buried in Stark.
I suspect Elizabeth's parents are John Allender b 1780 Ire and Elizabeth b. 1795 IRe because Wm F Smith death certificate says his mother b. Ire. she isn't named but I do believe the Peter S. smith censuses I've found are all the same family based on family notes of where my Smiths were born.. there is a marriage for a Nancy allender to a Wm G Robertson. 1850 census John/Eliz allender have samuel Robertson age 8 living w/ them. also a son James allender, suspect they also had a son John.
there is a will/probate record for Elizabeth Allender died 1851 I need to order.
I have info on Wm F Smith line but haven't located his siblings

1810 Tax records show a John Thompson paying taxes on section 26 of Salem Township, Columbiana County Ohio. I have good reason to believe this is my GGGG Grandfather just prior to relocating to Fredericksburg, Salt Creek Township, Wayne County, Ohio.

Ring any bells? John was married to Hiley Dorland. He most likely purchased this land from Reasin Beall who originally platted it.

Two brothers, John and James Thompson arrived in Fredericksburg, Salt Creek Township, Wayne County, Ohio around 1815. They were the patriarchs of a large branch of the Thompson family. I have published the “core” of that family online at:

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/t/h/o/Terry-G-Tho...

The branches of this family spread throughout Ohio, Illinois and Minnesota. Concentrations were in Ashland, Wayne and Defiance Counties of Ohio and Peoria, Illinois. They intermarried with the McFarland’s, Burge’s and the Dorland’s as laid forth in the recent book “The Dorland Enigma Solved”.

Both John and James Thompson list their place of birth as Delaware. I can trace them backwards to New Lisbon, Columbiana County, Ohio around 1803. From there backwards is a blank slate. I’m hoping to connect with a Thompson family who has a branch headed west towards Ohio, most likely from Pennsylvania, in and around the 1790’s. It was during this period that John Thompson married Hiley Dorland.
Amy (Ward) Wickersham death/burial

Quakers Amy Ward and Amos Wickersham married in Chester County, Penna. and traveled to Columbiana Co. in 1831 when they were received by New Garden Meeting from Kennet (Pa) Meeting. Amos died there in 1846 and his widow was still there as of 1860, along with her sons Philip and Eli. The sons remained there until their deaths in 1878 and 1900 respectively. The question is their mother Amy.

Does anyone have any information on her place of death (8-13-1869?) and or burial place? New Garden Friends Burial Ground is the likeliest place if there is such a burial ground next to the meeting.

Thanks,
John

Hoping to ID some photos

Hello All,

I have an old photo album with some photos I have not been able to identify, except for one and that was only recently. What little information I have about it is this. The album is one of those old-fashioned kind that's small and the holders are cardboard, meant to hold the cardstock style photos and some tintypes (at least I think they are tintypes, one is metal the size of a postage stamp, while two other metal ones are surrounded by gold like frames). I found this album at my paternal grandparents house and after recently identifying one photo as being a sister of my paternal great-grandmother (my paternal grandfather's mother specifically), I believe the others in the album, belong to the same family, that being the WILHELMs. The photo that I could identify belongs to Emma WILHELM, sister of Mary WILHELM, wife of Jacob FREED (1st) and George Washington FRY (second). Emma and Mary's parents were Henry WILHELM and Clarissa WALKER.

I don't know if the link will work but I will post the link to the album here as well as any other message board in order to let those that post view the pictures. If ANYONE can identify even one photo please post here or e-mail me at jknancy99@sbcglobal.net

I would greatly appreciate being able to finally put faces with the names I have. I will see if the link works and post accordingly. Thanks in advance.

http://s183.photobucket.com/albums/x23/jknancy07/Family/WhoA...

Jackie

Early Cornwells appear in Columbiana County.
If you early cornwell line goes back to Va, I would be willing to check our data base and see if your Cornwell line connects to the early Va Cornwells.
I would like to hear from anyone researching the Cornwell family. They came to Ohio from PA and I am looking for an Obit, land record, newspaper article, or anything else I can use to determine a link from Lewis P to a town or a person in PA.
James and Amanda (Heacock) McKee family 1840-1918

I am trying to trace the descendants of James McKee who died in Shenango Twp., PA in 1839. The sons listed in his will include a James McKee born probably between 1814-1820. In a deed of sale in 1845 James' wife is listed as Amanda. This has zeroed me in on the James McKee who is in the 1840 Census of Columbiana Co. in Salem, 20-30 years of age, with a female aged 15-20. They are living next to Alfred Heacock. There is a mention of a marriage between a James McKee and Amanda Heacock, although I have not yet found this marriage record. Through the censuses I can find this couple and their children in Salem and Perry, Columbiana County, and their son William F. McKee, marries Jane Doyle, raises his family and dies in Columbiana County. Is anyone else researching this family or can anyone else help me verify that this is THE James McKee from Shenanago, Beaver/Lawrence Co. PA? I cannot find any of the family in the 1870 Census, and by 1880 James and Amanda have moved back to Pennsylvania. I would love to hear from anyone else researching any of these McKees, Heacocks, or Doyles. Nancy Smith

Hi,
I am searching for any information about the John Chappell (Chappel) (b.1828-d. 1900). He was married to Harriet E. Andrews (b. 1833-d.1895). They were married on Feb. 2, 1855. They were both presumed to have been born in England. (Where, I don't know.) The emigrated to Virginia in the middle of the 18th century. After a short time, they settled in Hammondsville, Jefferson County, OH. Some time later they moved again to a suburb (Stump Town) near Washingtonville, Columbiana County, OH. where they lived until deceased.
They couple had 6 sons and four daughters. John Chappel was a coal miner.
I don't know anything else about the couple. If anyone has any other information about these two, John and Harriet, please let me know!
Many thanks!!!

I am searching for the families of two soldiers that were POW/KIA in the Korean War. When they entered service they gave Columbiana County, Ohio as thier home of record

Soldier: FRANK LUTZ
Born: May 12, 1925. Caucasian
Date of loss; October 12, 1951. MIA

Soldier: CHARLES MICHAEL FAMILIA
Born: July 14, 1928
Date of loss: May 4, 1952

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. These are 51 families from Ohio that are missing and two from Columbiana County.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Looking for the family that raised my brother, Chucky Durnberger (spelling of last name may not be correct). Chucky was the son of my mother, Iris O'dell Garey who later married Roy Lee Buchanan, Sr. Chucky stayed some time with my grand mother, Donnie "Donna" Bird Garey who eventually married a Mr. Philabaum. Donna died Dec. 20, 1984. Roy Buchanan passed away on Nov. 23, 1999 and Iris passed away on Aug. 12, 2003. I know Chucky was adopted by this wonderful family. I was placed for adoption as well, and even though I was born Helen Louise Buchanan on March 19, 1961, my name was changed to Marigrace Clonts when Alpheus and Frances Clonts adopted me. I can understand my brother having issues with our mother for placing us for adoption, but I just wish he would talk to me. None of this is my fault. My other siblings here have very little to do with me because I did not even meet them until I was 22 years old. I did not know I was adopted until I was 22. They feel that I am an intruder. I want so much to find Chucky. I am married and have kids and grand kids that I want to meet him and his family. Please if anyone can help me please email me direct at thefurbyfamily2006@yahoo.com Chucky was probably born somewhere in the early to mid 1950's as far as I can guess and he was raised in East Liverpool, OH from what I understand. Thank you.
