I don't know if this is too late to help but my GG grandparents are Rachel (Ruble) and Jeremiah Garrison. Based on the Civil War Pension Index, I believe that Jeremiah left the family, went west to Nebraska, and started another family using another first name. My G grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Garrison b. 4 Feb 1850 d. 31 Dec 1917 in Abingdon, Knox, Illinois. She first married James Smith, and as a widow, remarried David Tullis. I am still trying to locate Rachel and Jeremiah's parents. I do have additional information (other brothers and sisters) if you contact me i will be glad to share what I have. Would love to hear from anyone with ties to my family/s.

Have you tried the Ohio probate records online at FamilySearch.org? They are not searchable, but I've found that most of the volumes have index pages in the front. I have some tips on searching through them here: http://kathrynsquest.blogspot.com/2012/11/ohio-probate-recor... Good luck!

Thanks for yuur reply! I've found that to be the case concerning census records...I've been lucky to find a wealth of information to at least coorraborate my findings through the Robinson, Green and Beers Histories of the various counties pertaining to the familes I've been researching. Census records are great but the limitatons as you pointed out prior to 1850 leave a great deal of guesswork and speculation. I'm going to continue to search on a more local level...I appreciate your input!

Looking for some help to find further roots in my family tree! I'm looking for any information which would pertain to the family of James Hart who settled in Port William Clinton County Ohio between 1830 and 1850. I've found Census records and his marriage record to Mary Holloway in 1848. I've also found through Robinson's History of Clinton County that his father was Charles Hamlet Hart, but that's where my trail ends! I hope to ascertain the spouse of Charles Hart and to extend the family ancestry beyond their Ohio history. If anyone has any information on the James Hart family of Port William Ohio, James born in 1823 and Charles his father either Wales or Virginia between 1780-1805 I'd appreciate any help. I've been stumped on this for months. Thanks again

Patrick Creedan, born in 1814 and his wife Mary Coakley had two children that I know of: Julia, born in 1842 or 1843 and Timothy, born in 1846. Patrick and the children were in Clinton County, Ohio in the 1860 census, but Patrick had remarried by then. Were any of the Coakley families in Clinton County related to Mary?

The 1850 census for 1850 Union Twp, Clinton County, shows John Harris, 63, wagon maker, b. Virginia, Esther, 61, b. Pennsylvania and Elizabeth, 18, b. Ohio. Listed on the same page with their families are Jonathan Harris, 39, wagon maker and Samuel Harris, 22, blacksmith. Jonathan and Samuel are believed to be brothers and possibly sons of John and Esther. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Diane

Looking to see if anyone has access to the index of Wills for the 1840's. Levi Reed died between 1840 & 1850. Looking to see if he is the father of my Ann Catherine Reed who married Samuel L. Williams in Fayette County July 6, 1848. Levi listed a daughter 5-10 years old on the 1840 census. Ann would have been abt 8 in 1840.

Or if anyone has information on this family would love to hear from them.

I am looking for information on a Patrick Creedan (or Creedon) that was married to Hannah Hoover in 1851. Patrick was born in 1814 in Ireland and died in Clinton County in 1883 according to an entry in FindAGrave: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=93...

The 1860 Census for Wayne Township, Clinton County has:
Patrick Creedan (46), Hannah(38), Joanette(Johannah?) (14), Timothy (7), John (6), Phebe (2), Hannah (7/12), Julia (18)

Hannah and all of the children listed are shown as being born in Ohio. If the marriage date of 1851 is correct, some of the children listed may be from an earlier marriage.

The 1870 census has Patrick(56), Hannah(49), John(16), Johannah(19), Phebe(12), Jane(10), Rosanna(6), and Patrick(5).

I have found records for Rosa/Rosanna and John in Mercer County, OH. Phebe died at age 24 in Clinton County.

I have recently learned of a probate record in Mercer County naming my gg-grandfather Timothy Creeden (1846-1899) as guardian of Rose Creeden. There is also a newspaper abstract from Clinton County that says Timothy Creeden was the guardian of Rose.

I am trying to figure out if my Timothy is Patrick's son. The dates and birthplace in the 1860 census are not correct for my Timothy, so he may be some other relation. My Timothy was born in 1846 in Ireland and married Mary Ann Matson in 1868 in Clinton County. He moved to Mercer County around 1884.

Does anyone have information on Patrick or his son Timothy?

Thanks for any help with these families!

I am looking for information on William C Allen, wedding notice, obituary, history records or anything that might lead me to the parents of William.

1850 shows Wm C age 62, Barbara Age 48, Fanny, age 12, M. Allen age 10 (is actually Henry), DJ age 2, M L age 15, Eliza age 21 and L age 19

William and Barbara married 1822 in Warren County, I was given information that Barbara died 1855 in Warren County, Ohio and William died 1885 in Richmond, Indiana. I did find Fanny on the 1860 IN census and who I believe is William remarried also in Richmond, IN. He is not on the 1870 but the person he appeared to be married to is on that census and listed as widow so he must have die before 1870.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I found the following to go with my previous posting on TATE WRIGHT. Any other info would greatly be appreciated.

In Fayette Co., Ohio :

Blacksmiths:...... this is IMPORTANT:

In 1845, TATE WRIGHT, built a shop and carried on business about one year, when he sold out to THOMAS WRIGHT, who continued a short time.

THOMAS WRIGHT was 23 years old in the Des Moines County, Iowa 1856 census and living next door to TATE WRIGHT. THOMAS WRIGHT is living with ARMSTEAD DAVIS and his wife ELIZA A, DAVIS from Ohio. I believe the ARMSTEAD DAVIS might have married an ELIZA McGREGOR from Clinton County, Ohio.

This is the first record I have found with TATE WRIGHT connected to another WRIGHT man in Ohio.

Any information would greatly be appreciated on THOMAS WRIGHT. Fayette County and Clinton County, Ohio might hold the answer.

Marianne Dillow
Illinois

____________________________________________________________________

OHIO GENEALOGY EXPRESS

Welcome to
Fayette County,
Ohio

JASPER TOWNSHIP
Source: History of Fayette County, Ohio
Indianapolis, Ind. :: B.F. Bowen & Co., 1914

" The first blacksmith was Tate Wright, in 1845. "

" The towns and villages of Jasper township are and have been Plymouth, Jasper Mills, Milledgeville, Allentown, Edgefield and Pearsons. Plymouth, situated on the Palmer Pike, is the oldest place in Jasper township."

Now I have to check Fayette Co., Ohio out and Highland and Ross remembering Tate Wright married Rebecca Dick 29 Sep 1844 in Clinton Co., Ohio.

Fayette County was formed on March 1, 1810 from portions of Highland County and Ross County, Ohio.
__________________________________________________________________

I have been doing genealogy for 30 years. I am looking for the parents of Tate Wright who was born in Ohio in 1824. He married Rebecca Dick 29 Sep 1844 in Clinton County, Ohio in Richland Township. He was listed as a blacksmith in the 1850 Clinton Co., Ohio census. I believe Rebecca Dick Could be the daughter of Hieronymous Dick (spelled various ways) and Mary Ann Brunner. He lived in Wayne Township in Clinton Co., Ohio.

Tate Wright and Rebecca Dick removed from Clinton Co., Ohio and was in the Des Moines County, Iowa , Union Township, census in 1856 and was living next door to Armsted Davis and wife Eliza A. Davis with a Thomas Wright living with them. All were born in Ohio. Tate Wright was 31 years old in the census and Armsted Davis was 37; Thomas Wright was living with the Davis family and was 23 years old. I do not know if they are kin to Tate Wright or not.

Tate Wright moved on to Saline Co., Missouri in the 1860 census and in the 1870 census he was living in Pulaski County, Illinois where he died after that census. I descend from their son Fairfax Wright that was born 25 Jun 1845 in Clinton Co., Ohio. He died 12 Jan 1913 in Pulaski Co., Illinois.

Any information on Tate Wright and Thomas Wright in Ohio and possible parents would greatly be appreciated. This is a brick wall to me.

Marianne Dillow
Illinois
On the other hand… Searching the Highland co. forum, there is information indicating that Isabella Hays remarried and became the third wife of John Hutsonpiller (various spellings) on 20 May 1833, so it would be possible that some of her potential (so far unproven) children by John Hays were still with her in 1840. John Hutsonpiller and his second wife appear to have had two daughters born in the 1820s, but so far they are hard to document.

1830 and 1840 demographics just might have a clue. LDS shows that there are Highland co. listings for John Hutsonpiller.

By 1850, through 1880, Isabella Hutsonpiller is in Pike co., IL. The listings have her as born circa 1793 in PA. And this would be in agreement with the birthplace for the mother of your Rebecca B. Hays.
Considering your latest info, you may be right to go back to square one. We were looking for the origins of the elder David Hays. His 1840 and earlier documentation remains unknown, at least to me.

In reality however, we are seeking the parents of Rebecca B. Hays, and while this David seems to be a good, probable candidate, I’ve not seen any documented connection. Perhaps you have found that evidence.

There is documentation of Mrs. Puckett from her marriage in 1842 to the 1900 census. The demographic data is consistent and there is no reason not to accept that information. If she is born in Highland co. in 1824 and married in Clinton co. in 1842, then she certainly seems to be native to the local area and would probably be found there in both 1830 and 1840 census listings. And if not with David, then where? Unfortunately, I have no current sources to access 1830 and 1840 census demographics, so there may be multiple Hays households with young daughters of the correct age. However, when evidence is so scare, you need to examine anything you can find.

In looking at Highland co. listings, there is Isabella Hays in White Oak twp. in 1830. John Hays married Isabella Murphy in Highland co. in 1814. Although completely speculative, it does offer the possibility of a daughter born in Highland co. to someone other than George Hays, with his daughter, Rebecca Ann. And if by 1840, both her parents (John and Isabella) had died, she could be virtually impossible to find (living with Murphy relatives??)

So...disregarding my previous post. The David Hays b. 17 Jun 1785 in Cross Creek, PA and died in 1869 at Champaign Co., IL is not mine. He was in Athens/Vinton Co. on the 1840/1850 census and in Illinois twice on the 1860 census. So back to square one. What I know about Rebecca B. Hays - b. Nov 1824 in Lynchburg, Highland, OH. She m. Benjamin Puckett Oct 1842 in Clinton Co. They had a farm in Clinton Co. a short distance from Lynchburg, so just as likely records may be from Highland Co. There were a number of Hays in Highland Co. One David Hays was said to have platted the town of Lynchburg - he died in 1807 single. The marriages I've looked at connect to Virginia, not Pennsylvania as the census would point me. There was a Rebecca Hays in Highland Co. that m. David Foresman in 1837 - not mine - I think she was a daughter of George Hays and Janebethel (of Jincy) Johnson, if I remember correctly.

Okay...sorry it took so long to get back to you. I have a lot of odds and ends I wanted to get sorted out. I took your advice and loaded all the 1820-1840 David Hays and similar spellings into a spreadsheet, then went to the 1830. I agree the 1820 is the David Hays/Mary Horsman family - tracking them forward was easy. Family is well documented and the kids match the census well for each year. In 1830, their David jr. appears to be on the census twice - certainly not mine unless there was a gross error in ages - so mine wasn't in Clinton Co. in 1830. Next I took all David Hays on the 1830 and ruled out based on (1) b. between 1770 and 1790 (2) Martha birth same way, then excluded those without both parents present. If they didn't have females b. between 1810 and 1830 I eliminated them, also slave owners. Finally, I went through and eliminated those I could match to the 1840 census. That left me with 2 in Washington Co., PA and one in Shenandoah, VA (obviously a longshot on that one).

There are a handful of trees that connect David Hays that died 29 May 1869 in Champaign, IL - I was a bit skeptical at some point, but it looks like that may be the most likely one. Thanks! Brad.

Could you be more specific about your research? You have identified your David Hays in 1850 & 1860, but what about 1840? What are the demographics for each of the Davids in 1840 and 1830?

In 1820 there is only one David and from those demographics (four young sons, and no daughters), I guessing this is the wrong line. Looks like this David is the father of David, Amos, Elijah and probably Joel.

Who are the earlier Clinton co. marriages: William Hay 1818, Fanny Hayes 1821, George Hays 1826, Nancy Hay 1828? Do you have prospective siblings for the Rebecca you are researching? When was she born?

If the 1820 David of Clinton co., OH, is indeed the wrong one, then your David is potentially recorded somewhere else in OH or PA. If you can discover some of the demographic factors of his household from 1840 & 1830, you could match or eliminate the other Davids in the 1820 listings and perhaps even 1810.

I posted a number of years ago in regard to this Hays family. Still haven't made headway on this, so I thought I'd give it another try. I'm looking for information on the family of David Hays from Martinsville, b. about 1781 in Pennsylvania. On the 1850 census for Clark Twp., He is listed (age 69) with Martha (age 67). On the 1860 Census he's listed (age 80) with Margaret (age 78). There are three David Hays that show up in Clinton County between 1820 and 1860, including one who married Mary Horsman, and died in 1844 and his son who was born in 1808. There is quite a bit online about these two. I'm interested in the other one, who married Margaret/Martha. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
