Looking for info on above John 1793 married to Penia 1798. Both buried Westboro Friends Cemetery. Came from New Jersey. John served War of 1812. Interested in involvement with "Society of Friends". Son was William born 1819 who later moved to Liberty Twp., IN. and was married to Elizabeth Seal.

Thanks,
Annette

Annette,

John Stewart and Experience "Pena" Mart (that's how it is spelled in our family) are my fourth grandparents. Their daughter Elizabeth Stewart is my line.

I've been to the cemetery and have photos of their markers. I've always wondered about the Quaker connection. Their daughter Elizabeth Stewart Straw and some of her children show up in the Quaker records I found at Ancestry, but I didn't find John and Experience.

I would be interested in hearing your take on the family since everyone passes down different stories.

Angela

I would love to see your cemetery pictures, could you send them to me as attachment? Elizabeth Stewart must have been a sibling to William, John's son. Would you mind sending info on Elizabeth and if there was other siblings? I really don't know for sure if they were "Friends" but they were buried in the Westboro Friends Cemetery. If John served in War of 1812 it might be questionable. Have you done any research back to New Jersery or beyond? I wonder if they came from Scottland.
My husband's grandma is gone so I really don't know any other info other than they went to a Friends Church in IN. She always wore dresses and had long hair that she wore up and was never cut. She had high standards but was kind. I don't know if the Clinton Co. Historical or Genealogical Society would have records on the Friends. I was reading a book about samplers which mentions huge settlements of the Society of Friends in Warren and Clinton Counties. My husbands line ended up near Marion, IN. I think they might have went north in OH first.
Any info you have would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Annette

Hi

I will send you the photos in a separate email.

I have not been able to figure out parents for John Stewart or Experience Mart. There are several message board posts from years ago that discuss it, but nothing is concrete, as far as I can tell.

I used to live in a neighboring county to Clinton County, so I was able to visit the Genealogy Society a few times. At the time, I didn't know much about the Stewarts and always figured I would investigate the Quaker connection the "next visit". Now, I live in another state!

As for New Jersey, I am no expert on resources there. I have tried to learn more about the Mart family since the name is less common than Stewart, but still not much luck.

As far as the Scotland connection, one of the descendents mentions in a bio that the Stewart family is descended from Mary Queen of Scots! Another bio mentions that the family is Scotch Irish.

I haven't looked into the Mart's or NJ notes yet, either. And I'm not sure about doing research overseas. I did find a note about a Elizabeth Stewart in 1839 from Franklin (not sure if this is Twp. or Franklin Co. or Warren Co.??) about living there and having made a sampler which the Friends were very good at. I read about her name in a book about OH samplers from our local library. In another part of the book it mentions a group of Friends came to Preble Co., Oh that were from Scottland to Elizabeth, NJ. That would be another place to research. However, I don't know if my line went to Preble Co., OH.

Thanks for sharing; I look forward to getting the photo's. Send to: ajstew@embarqmail.com

I have Marts in my line who came from New Jersey as well, and were Quaker. My Camp line and they intermarried. There seemed to be an influx of Friends from New Jersey in that time frame to Clinton County and many moved on to Indiana. They also included the Garrisons. Since Friends tended to marry within the faith, there was much intermarriage of those lines and suspect my Marts were the same line as your Marts. I have read other accounts a long time ago and I forget where suggesting the Marts were French and had changed their names many years before as they came in from Canada. No substantiation.

I would seriously start a search like this in the Quaker meeting notes and other Quaker resources available in many libraries. I have found many of my family on both sides in the American Quaker Geneology.
