Re: Robert Christie d. Aug 1818 Clermont Co, OH

I received an email that suggests that

"Robert's will is on Docket B, Page 254 in Clermont County, Ohio"

I would be quite grateful, if someone with local connections could verify this information, and let me know where I can call to get a copy or transciption of the information.

ALso, (for inquiring minds) I was also directed to the following from "History of Clermont and Brown Counties, Ohio, by Byron Willims, 1987"

Page 246:

The story of Robert Christie is well worth while, for those who would review the ways of fate tha long ago. He was the younger son on a Scottish laird, with a plentiful prospect; but in a boying rage he left home and, in his seventeenth year, enlisted in the British army, where he became a sergeant under Cornwallis at Yorktown. After the surrender, he refused to return to England and thereby, as a technical deserter, sacrificed the estate that fell to him upon the death of his only brother, the childless Laird of Beech Green. He married Frances Burdett, of a good Virginia family and learned the weaving of old time coverlets, now highly prized. A pair of these won the admiration of William Lyttle, "tired of his rambling" and thinking of "some one who would keep him at home." At any rate, soon lots were given in exchange that are now included in the countless values of Fountain Square. But, as with the estate in Scotland, Robert could not bide the time. And so he let another fortune go and came out to Williamsburg to live in a cabin on the lot where is now the writer's home. A little later the family lived in another cabin that stood on the slight rise, a good stone throw south from the eastern end of the Main Street Bridge.

There on September 3, 1803, was born the youngest of the ten childrren, William B. Christie, the most elequent pulpit orator of his generation who, if we may believe tradition, has not since been excelled in seraphic sweetness of speech. Chilled by want, sorrowing for his father's increasing intemperance, and thrilled with the aspirations of couscious ability, the boy was timid before his rude companions, until their coarse taunts about his poverty aroused his rage, and then his passion brooked no opposition. After a while, it was understood that he was a dangerous subject for sport. But fore those who met him fair, he was gentle and obliging. In person he was tall and slight. His complexion was that striking contrast of pale features and heetic cheeke, lit by dark, brilliant eyes all framed by glossy black hair, the combination only found among the black-eyed sons of Scotland. He know his power and was full of pride that he could use it all for his diving Master. He died at the age of thirty-six in the dawn of his greatness.

Again, many thanks to those who have helped me "fill-in the blanks".

Diana Biddle
Indiana

I think you have the wrong 1850 Thomas Moore. That Thomas is still living with the Hills in 1860 and in 1870 is married to a Sarah with 3 children and living next to the widowed Rachel Hill. 1880 Thomas and Sarah still married in Clermont. So, unless Leona was illegitimate, you need to find another father for her.

There was no inside plumbing therefore there was a out house. My sister is going through old pictures and report cards. If she finds a picture I will send it to you.

posting to several Ohio boards regarding Campbell/Evans information
Recently I have been searching intensively for the location of a Revolutionary War powder horn which belonged to Edward Evans, thought by many to have been the Drummer Boy for George Washington. The last anyone knew, it was owned by Robert Evans Campbell [a lawyer and judge] of Georgetown, Brown County, Ohio who passed away on 3 March 1936.

The problem is, everyone I’ve been able to locate who was affiliated with Robert has already passed away. So I’m just going to list all the names from several Ohio counties I’ve collected and hope that someone might have information. These come from miscellaneous sources, but the most informative is a book: History of Clermont and Brown Counties, Ohio by Byron Williams.

Connected names:
Robert Campbell, great-grandfather of Robert Evans Campbell
Mathew Campbell, grandfather of Mr. Robert E. Campbell
William Campbell, born near BentonvilIe, Adams county, Ohio.
Mrs. Fannie (Evans) Campbell, born near Carlisle, Brown county,
Mr. Robert Evans Campbell married Miss Mary Lizzie Gilbert
Her parents were Dyas and Harriet (Pence) Gilbert.
Dyas Gilbert was born in Huntington township, Brown county, Ohio,
His great-grandfather was William Gilbert
Alexander Brooks Gilbert, son of William Gilbert and wife was born near Aberdeen, Ohio
John and Dyas Gilbert
Katherine Housh,
Harriet (Pence) Gilbert, born Feb 21, 1832 Her daughter was Mrs. Holton.
Michall Pence, great-grandfather of Mrs. Harriet (Pellce) Gilbert, one of the first settlers of Adams county, Ohio
Children of Dyas and Harriet (Pence) Gilbert were
Albertine Dyas, wife of Samuel Dragoo, residents of Elpaso, Tex.
Sarah Katherine Dyas, married William -from Brown county, Ohio.
Hillis R., Dyas from Dayton, Ohio. Homer Grant, of New Mexico.
Minnie J., Dyas wife of James S. Wilson, from Decatur, Ohio.
Effie Belle, Dyas wife of William B. Holton from Decatur, Ohio.
William Dyas Campbell, born Feb 25, 1881, married Georgia Walker, of Paris, Tex., from Amarillo, Tex., They have one child, Mary Francis, born Nov 10, 1906, in Texas.
Ruth Campbell, born February 6, 1884, married Charles P. Noggle, of Dayton, Ohio; one daughter, Katherine, born Mar 4, 1910.
Lucy Campbell, born Feb 6, 1887, wife of Elbert F. Schweickart, of Fremont, Ohio; one daughter, Ruth Louise, born Dec 25. 1911.
Kate Copple Campbell, born July 28. 1890, is a graduate of the high school of Georgetown and attended Miami University. Taught at the old Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Orphans’ Home at Xenia, Ohio.

Maj. Robert Evans Campbell descended on his mother's side from George Wilson, an officer in the French and Indian war, from 1755 to 1764. On his mother's side Major Campbell descended from Edward Evans, a Revolutionary soldier, who belonged to the Virginia Rifles.

I’m interested in contacting any living relatives of any of these folks listed above. Perhaps others investigating these Campbells might interested in the full quotation from the book, which I have.

You may want to contact me off message board, but be aware that I have Spamblocker and will take a little time for me to respond.

Thanks

I just returned from visiting Cincinnati and Clermont County, My GGGrandparents are buried in Spring Grove but died in BLanchester in 1888 and 1901. They are listed in Blanchester in the 1880 census. Their names were Charles and Sarah Wallin Wood. While driving the rural area of Clermont County I came across a sign for (West) Woodville. It states when Woodville was platted and appears to basically have only a Baptist Church at this time. Does anyone have the history of Woodville, who it is named after and why it's demise.
Tribbles of Clermont County

I am a descendant of Cornelius Tribble, who was born in North Carolina and lived in Clermont County, Ohio during the early 1800's. According to the 1850 Census, Cornelius was born in North Carolina about 1791. Cornelius served in the War of 1812 (from Ohio), married Sarah Stevens (also of North Carolina) in Clermont County in 1813, and is listed in tax/census records in Clermont County in 1820, 1830 and 1840. His children included Alpheus, Alanson, Amos, and Asenith. Other sons may include John and William (listed in 1850 census with Sarah and Cornelius).

I believe Cornelius likely was a son of Shadrack Tribble, who also lived in Clermont County for a time. According to early tax list records and census records, Shadrack first shows up in Clermont in 1806, and then is present in 1807, 1809, 1810, 1811, 1820.

Later I see a Shadrack Tribble in Warren County, TN (1830, 1836, 1840), and I'm assuming this is the same Shadrack? Some data bases state that this Shadrack Tribble died in Coffee Co., TN in 1848, and was born about 1765, but I don't know the source(s) of that information. Does anyone have source records for his birth or death?

According to Herman Fagley, a well known Clermont County researcher, Shadrack Tribble:

- Likely preached north of Bethel, OH on Clover Road

- Was close kinsman of Rev Andrew Tribble, of Tate's Creek Baptist, in Madison Co.

- Shadrack Tribble lived at Bethel,Oh. Likely Orange Co>Co,Va > NC > Boonesboro,Ky > to Clermont CO,OH.

- Rev Shadrack Tribble-returned someplace in Ky leaving sons.

I have no proof, but I'm assuming that Cornelius is one of those son's, since Shadrack and Cornelius are the only two Tribbles listed in Clermont County records during this era. Further, if the 1765 birth date is correct, Shadrack would be about the right age to be the father of Cornelius (not a sibling, etc.).

I therefore speculate that my line goes from Cornelius > Shadrack > Spilsby > Shadrack > George > Peter Tribble. Does this sound right?

Does anyone have additional information about either Cornelius or Shadrack? Does anyone know who Shadrack's wife would have been? Other relevant information? Thanks!

PS: I've also posted this message on the Tribble surname board.

James McCollum - b1792 in Ohio

Searching for information regarding James' parents. I know he was born in 6 March 1792 in Ohio, married Elizabeth Cowen 19 Jun 1814 in Clermont Co, and died 2 Jul 1878 at his son-in-law's (Bethuel Cavolt) home in Warren Co. He and his wife are buried in the McCollum Cemetery in Clermont, as well as other family memebers.

I have copies of his War of 1812 service record and other family documents. But clues to his parent's names have so far remained hidden.

This obituary appeared in the Clermont Sun - 10 July 1878

One of the oldest pioneers of Northern Clermont, dies at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Bethuel Covalt, near Deerfield, Warren county, Ohio, on July 2, 1878. Mr. McCollum was born in a military fort near the mouth of the Little Miami River, Hamilton county, March 6, 1792, as was consequently in the eighty-seventh year of his age. To give a detailed history of the deceased, would be giving the history of Northern Clermont for the period of his life. We first find him peddling the Cincinnati Gazette, then known by the name of Liberty Hall - along the streets of the city. He soon afterward came to Stonelick and in 1814 married Miss Elizabeth Cowen, daughter of William Cowen, with whom he lived happily for about fifty-five years. He served as a soldier in the war of 1812, braving the unparalleled hardships of the northern campaign. Physically, he was a man of great power of endurance, and did more than his share in the general improvement of his section. The deceased became a member of the M. E. Church some fifty years ago, and ever since has lived in accordance with its discipline. In early days his house was used as a place of worship in the absence of a regular public house of worship. He was a good husband, a kind father, gentlemanly in all his associations, and a highly esteemed citizen. Though a man of no educational advantages, his latter days were spent in reading and keeping himself informed in all the advancements of society.
Christian Edinger Buried In Clermont Co Ohio

I received help from someone that said a Christian Edinger was buried in one of the Clermont Co Ohio cemeteries. They couldn't tell me any further information about this man. I need to find the particulars like what cemetery; date of death; date of birth or anything else that could identify him. I am researching the family of Philip and Mary Edinger and I believe this Christian may be Philip's father. Philip died in Clermont Co before 9 Aug 1846 when his widow Mary married John Barrett in Clermont Co. Philip and Mary Edinger had Christian; Catherine; Mary A; Rachel; Elizabeth; Jacob; Spencer. News of any of them would be very helpful.

Location of Farm in Monroe Twp, Clermont County

I have copies of the deeds for the farm my grandparents owned in Monroe Twp. Unfortunately, from the land description, I can not pinpoint where this farm was located.

According to the records, my grandparents, Fritz and Elenora Simonson (Simonsen)purchased the land from George B. and Alma R. Huntington in 1923. They sold the 11 acres to Henry J. and Dorothy C. Moemke in 1933. The land is described as "beginning at a stone in the Laurel road corner to C. Kuntz, thence N. 30 degrees W. 31.4 poles to a stone...," etc. I have no problem locating Laurel Road, but it's a fairly long road. Does anyone know of land maps from this time period where I could find out where C. Kuntz lived?

I would love to correspond with anyone who knew Fritz and Eleanora (Ella) Simonsen (sometimes used surname SIMPSON), and their daughters Edna and Hilda. Their son, Ivan was killed in a hunting accident in 1928 at the age of 15.

Any assistance appreciated.

Laurel/Carmel Cemetery - Patrick Cassidy and Martha Debruler

Are there cemetery records for Laurel/Carmel cemetery? I visited this cemetery a few years ago and found the headstone of my ggggrandfather, Patrick Cassidy. I have the information from the headstone, but I'm wondering if there is a record from when he was buried that might tell how/why he died, who owned the plot, etc. Also, there is a blank headstone beside Patrick's and I'm wondering if that is his wife, Martha Debruler Cassidy. I can't find Martha in any cemetery index in Clermont. She died sometime in 1866. Thanks for any information you can provide.

Pam Cassiday
Decatur, GA

John R. Gravitt was married in 1897 to Wilhelmina Trees after the Mar 1896 death of his first wife, Minnie B. If someone has access to Clermont Co., marriage records, I would appreciate knowing the date of marriage and the maiden name of Minnie B. The couple appeared on the 1880 census in Tate Twp., Clermont Co., OH as John Gravith, age 23 and Minnie Gravith, age 17, b. in Ohio. John's children, Chester and Tressie have been listed as children of Wilhelmina but that can't be correct as they were born in 1892 and 1896, prior to the marriage to Wilhelmina.
