Interested in a Robert Barnse (Barnes?) who applied for a Revolutionary War pension from Champaign Co 5-5-1818. According to his records from footnote.com he died shortly after receiving the pension. Does anyone have information on this man? I am interested in any Barnes living in Champaign Co in early 1800's as my ancestor Sarah Barnes Terrel was there at that time.

With the purpose of proving/disproving supposed links among the listed surnames, we are trying to gather participants for a group DNA study
-- utilizing FamilyTreeDNA, Relative Genetics, or -- is there a better, more reliable company?
I would appreciate any/all interested and willing male line Faulkner descendants.
Please contact me so that we can form the group and decide on provider. My understanding is that the cost becomes less with more participants -- and we have more chance of connecting links.
Thank you.
I'm looking for the graves of my 3rd great grandparents David Nelligan and Nora O'Keefe Nelligan.

Nora died May 12, 1870 in Urbana, Ohio.

I not sure when David died. My grandmother told us that David was a cabinet maker and was buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Urbana. I assume he was buried next to Nora.

David and Nora's daughter Bridget Nelligan married James Whalen at St. Mary's church in Urbana in 1880.

Can anyone tell me which cemetery was the "Catholic cemtery" in Urbana 120 years ago. Was it St. Mary's? Was there more than one Catholic cemetery?

Thanks.

Cary Clements
Portland, Maine

Reuben and Ruth (Van Meter) Harris

Seeking information on Reuben and Ruth (VAN METER) HARRIS, my 4th great-grandparents, who lives in Champaign County, Ohio from (at least) 1840 up to their deaths.

Reuben was born between 1791 and 1793 in New Jersey. He was previously married; first wife: Sarah BREWSTER, who he married on 29 September 1818 in Greene County, Ohio. One daughter, Sarah. Reuben and Ruth (born 20 August 1790 in New Jersey) were married on 3 May 1821 in Clark County, Ohio.

Census records show that they lived in Clark County in 1830, but after the 1840 census, they lived in Champaign County, specifically in Adams Township (1840 and 1850) and Carysville (1860). Reuben died sometime between 1860 and 1870; doesn't appear in census records. Ruth appeared in the 1870 census, living in Harrison Township, Champaign County. She died there on 24 May 1877.

Reuben and Ruth had at least four children: John Vanmeter Harris, Jeremiah Harris (my 3rd great-grandfather, married MARIAH STEHMAN), Rebecca Harris and Lois Harris. They may have had more children (I used to have family bible records, but they are lost, sadly.)

I would greatly appreciate any information on Reuben and Ruth. I will gladly share all of my information with you if needed.

Thanks,
~ james
zhiingoosii@gmail.com

Is there anyone who could do a lookup for me in the Oak Dale Cemetery records? Several internet sites indicate that John Eichholtz (1811-1882) is buried there. I would like to confirm that, as well as get the title of the book it's found in and the page number. An additional check to see if his wife Mary (b. about 1819) is buried with him would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Pam in New Jersey

Have located a death certificate for John Columbus Offitt, who died in Adams, Champaign County, OH on 12/30/1933. Lists wife as Margaret Ann Offitt. However informants signature appears to be Margaret Offutt (Note spelling). In addition, in my genealogy research of the Offutt Family I have a Jonathan Columbus Offutt, born on the same day given for this "Offitt". Also, an online index of obituaries for Champaign County has a Margaret Ann Offutt listed as being printed 1/8/1948, which is after John C. Offitt's death. Would like to determine if the spellng on the Death Certificate is incorrect and this is in fact Jonathan Columbus Offutt.

Any help appreciated

1810 Champaign County Murder - Help with identification

I recently came across the following newspaper item published May 25, 1810, in the Farmer's Repository, Charles Town, Jefferson County, Virginia (now West Virginia):

"A few days since, Mr. Phillips, (a farmer), near Urbanna, Champaign county, beat and abused his wife, (daughter of the Rev. Hiram M. Curry, late senator from Champaign) in such a shocking manner that she survived but two days. -- Mr. Phillips and his wife were not in the habit of quarrelling, but he having been intoxicated for several days, it is supposed led him to the perpetration of the horrid act. He is apprehended, and is now confined in Urbana jail. -- Such is the effect of intemperance."

Does anyone have any further information concerning this murder? What happened to Mr. Phillips? I hoping that someone can help me identify Mr. Phillips, as well as the first same of his wife. I do have considerable information regarding Hiram M. Curry, but I have not been able determine the name of the daughter who married said Mr. Phillips.

Steve Shook

Champaign County Scrapbook

I recently bought a scrapbook in a Eugene, Oregon antique store. It dates from the early 1800's to about 1915. I believe it was kept by a member of the Ross or Brand families who had settled in the Urbana area about 1805. The book has a front cover, but no back cover, it is 60+ pages of newspaper articles. (William A. Brand was the editor of the local newspaper from 1865-1878, also a lawyer and Postmaster.)

It has an extensive history of the area...particularly a series of articles titled, "History of Mt. Psgah Neighborhood." The history begins...

"Although its boundaries cannot be determined with precision, yet we will assume they are as follows: It is bounded north by the Mechanicsburg pike, east by a line drawn southward from Mutal, south by a line drawn eastward from Powhatttan, and west by the township line. Its northeast courner nestles in the arms of Mutual, and the southwest corner is protected by the friendly tribes of Powhattan. First in the annals of this neighborhood appear the surneames Runyan, McLain, Lafferty, Minturn, Jones, Clark, Robinson, Reid, Ward, Baker, Hedges and Garber."

The first settlement was made in 1802 by John Runyan and Joseph McLain. They were born in New Jersey....."

This series articles gives the genealogy of most of the people mentioned. The schools, graveyards, business, first houses and business. It is very extensive. PLEASE NOTE: THERE ARE CORRECTIONS TO THE ARTICLES, THAT ARE INCLUDED IN THE SERIES. This is important because, dates and genealogical information is corrected from what was originally published. This is a series of 10 articles, about 8.3 8.5x11 pages of small newspaper type.

The scrapbook has more than 60 pages of newspaper clippings. They include obituaries, society news, business news, GAR, Church news, especially the Methodist Episcopal Church. The early history tells who the teachers in the schools were, a list of students, which schools burnt down and were rebuilt, and where they were. It also says where the early graveyards and family burial grounds were. There are also a few pictures.

Western Bank Note and Eng. Co. (some of the families in the book were bankers)
(from the Turn of the Century (1899) Jennie O. De Golyer, Pres. YWCA
William O. Hunter, Saff Captain Salvation Army
Geo. H. Fitch, General Secretary YMCA
Emma A. Estes, Principal Christian Science Institute
Bishop William X. Ninde - ME Church
Grace Methodist Episcopal Church in 1903

It really is full of early information.

I started compiling the names...I finally gave up there are too many, but here is a partial list:

Report
Name	Birth date	Death date	Birth location
A.
Parents of Susannah Bell (Graham) Overhulse

My great-great grandmother, Susannah Bell Graham, was born in Ohio on July 1822. I do not know the county in which she was born. She was married to Samuel Overhulse on 17 Feb 1842 in Champaign County. Susannah died in St. Paris, Champaign County on 13 Feb 1856. She and Samuel were founding members of the Methodist Church in St. Paris. I have not known who Susannah's parents were. Recently I requested some research help from the Methodist Church archives at Ohio Wesleyan University. They were able to find an obit for Susannah in the Western Christian Advocate, which was a Methodist Episcopal newspaper of record for Ohio and Indiana geographic areas in the 19th century. The obit does not give much personal information about Susannah, but does show her parents as Andrew and Ruth Graham. Can anyone provide me with any information on an Andrew and Ruth Graham in Ohio from the early 1820's further on into the middle 1800's? I find one couple named Andrew and Ruth Graham in Ohio census records and online family trees on ancestry.com but Andrew was 10 years younger than Ruth and would not have been old enough to father a child who was born in 1822 but Ruth would have been old enough. It is possible that Ruth could have had a child earlier than her marriage to Andrew and that Andrew adopted the daughter and raised her as his own, but none of the online family trees for this couple mention a daughter named Susannah. Any information anyone can help me with on finding more information on Susannah's parents, I would really appreciate it.

Need Cemetery Records for Fay's

Looking for any info anyone can provide me about the Fay's. I have blood lines back to 1571, but looking for death records, obits, marriages, cemetery records, probate records, etc. on the Fay's who were in Champaign County. I know that Philena (Buscom) Fay is buried in Mutual Cemetery in Champaign County. Philena was my ggggg grandmother. Children of Levi Fay and Philena Buscom include Stephen B Fay (my gggg grandfather), Oliver Fay, Hubbard P Fay, Henry E Fay, Jonas "John" W Fay, and Orville D Fay. It is believed there may have been a female child also, as the census record in Goshen Twp in 1840 listed a female child between the age of 5-10. The Fay's moved to Champaign sometime between the 1830 and 1840 census years. It is unknown how many of the stayed there, it is known that Stephen moved to Indiana after marrying Cassa Call in 1849, they were on the 1850 census in Auglaize County, Ohio. The 1860 census listed that their first child, Thomas J, was born in Ohio abt1854, but their second child, James (my ggg grandfather), was born in Indiana in 1857. Philena died 5/28/1884. Any info anyone could provide is great!

Angela Fay

Marriage Approbation

I am trying to determine who the parents of my great-great grandmother are. She died in Ohio in 1856 at the age of 33, after having given birth to 8 children, 7 sons and 1 daughter. I just received a copy of her marriage record from Champaign County but it doesn't have the name of her parents or the name of any witnesses. It does say, though, that "her father's approbation filed". Where would I find a copy of a marriage approbation? Would the probate court have it, as they did the marriage record? She was married by Jesse Goddard, minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Champaign County. Anyone know of how to obtain early marriage records(1842) from this church? Any suggestions would be helpful. My g-g-grandmother's name was Susanna(h) Bell Graham and her husband's name was Samuel Overhulser.

I am looking for the original owners of a house on Storms Creek Rd, Urbana Ohio. The house was built in 1837, and was obviously not a simple farm house. Any pointers on where I can begin to look, I would greatly appreciate it.

Some things to know about the house... I believe it was part of ~100 acres. I have been told that it could possibly be the Hullinger family... but can not find anything on it. Please help if you can. If you need more data, please email me. David@snydertechnologies.com

THANKS!!

Hello... I am researching several Champaign Co. families.(Meacham, Sessions, Foster, Marks). Right now I was hoping someone had the new book from the Champaign Genealogical Society on family related court cases such as divorce, bastardy, etc. I am interested if there is an entry on a divorce case for Mabel Foster Heston from William Burrell Heston in the late 1890's or early 1900's. Their surnames appear in the index on-line. I would like to order the records from the county court house but need the case number, etc. from the book as I don't know the date of the divorce. I would really appreciate the look up. I am happy to share any info I have on my Champaign families. Thanks...Teresa

Hunter family marriage records with witness or bonds?

Does anyone have access to Champaign County marriage records that include the witnesses or bondsmen? I have located the transcriptions at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~evilsizer/ChamMarr3... but none of the records list either of those two components. I am trying to verify Jane Hunter, who married Thomas Miller in that county on Dec 21, 1820 was a daughter of Nathaniel Hunter and Ann Porter - thought the marriage record might give something. Would appreciate any help.
Darby Church, Minister Gerard & wife

I'm trying to locate information about a church that existed during the early 1900s to about 1940s. The church can't be found to have existed in Union Co, Paris Twsp during this time frame. There was suppose to have been a Mr. Gerard who was the minister of the "Darby Church". I can't find any such Gerard in the 1930 Census that was employed as a minister. Any help would be wonderful. A photo of Mrs. Gerard was found in my maternal aunt's belongings in 1998. The photo did not include Mr. Gerard.
