Thank you for the response. I am not related to this family either. I am researching it for a friend. I am aware of the contents of census records. I have checked all the standard sources and posted this inquiry as a "last" resort to see if anyone else might have info that could assist me.

But I do appreciate you taking the time to respond. Thank you.

I’m not related to any member of this family.

This is the problem with early census records -

Facts you should know about the early census records –

All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++
Thank you for your response and your suggestions. I should have been more specific with my post and indicated that I have checked all the standard sources such as those you listed. I was hoping that someone else was researching this family and may have found some unique source that would give me additional info or at least a new starting point.

But, again, thank you for your reply. It is always nice to know that someone reads a post.

Your investigations have reached a difficulty encountered by many other researchers. There is a lack of information due to the nature and scarcity of documentary resources.

Any description of your research should include the sources you have used. I looked for your William Miller in Butler Co. census listings, but had better luck in the Family Trees here on RootsWeb. One profile lists William's parents as Henry Miller and Sarah Bumgardner amd places the families in Morgan Twp. Butler Co. in 1840 and earlier. While the 1850 listings are in Washington Twp., Mercer Co., OH.

There is a Henry Miller in 1830 Morgan Twp. In 1840 he is transcribed (LDS) as Hery, which is probably an error. Did Henry and Sarah make the move from Butler Co. to Mercer Co. berfore 1850? I see Ephraim Carmack apparently did and there may be others. Were Henry and Sarah buried in Butler Co. or in Mercer Co? There may be a will. There might be tombstone dates.

The only cure for a lack of information is a thorough and detailed search of all potential data sources, and sometimes even that is not enough.

I am searching for information on the famiy of William C. Miller who appears to have been born in Virginia about 1806 but married Mary Ann Carmack in Butler County, Ohio on 15 Jan 1835. They had a son, Ephraim Miller born 2 Apr 1837 in Butler County.

I am looking for William's origins. All I have is a name of Henry as possibly being his father. I have no info as to where in Virginia William might have been born. Any information that could give me some direction would be appreciated. Thank you.

I found it on Ancestry, but thanks anyway. I am trying to find the earliest date when Thomas, Benjamin and James Long were living in Ross Twp., Butler County. They were not there in 1806.

I’m not related to any member of this family.

This is your problem -

What became of George W. C. White after 1900? In response to your question, I have an oil on velvet painting of a 3 masted ship on a full moon night that was painted for my father I believe before 1949. I was born in 1949 so I know the painting was painted before-prior to 1949. At that time my father owned a laundry in Baltimore, Maryland. I believe the painting was received as payment for a past due bill. The painting is signed by W. C. White
my email address is mbender@cislinc.com
Specifically relating to the divorce record, what investigation have you done? Seems to me that you'll have to go to the county vital records and find out what relevant documentation might exist for that time. There are still certain areas where info is not so easily available - assuming it exists. Preble Co. might be more likely than Butler Co.

First let me thank you for the help.
Andrew was married to Caroline Tobias, in Montgomery county Ohio in 1850 (So Orwick could not be in-laws,) she died in 1886, I found another Andrew in the 1900 census same age, married to a Drusilla Woodward, 20 years his senior marred in 1882, so if this is My Andrew there would of had to be some reason That he left Caroline 4 years before her death. I have been trying to find a divorce record.

First let me thank you for the help, I have all the information you have noted, Also I found Andrew listed as Moyer and Caroline Tobias marriage records, they were married in Montgomery county Ohio in 1850 his father Benjamin is listed in the record also, I have found his whole family in and around Farmersville Ohio. But still have the hole to fill after Caroline died in 1886, The Andrew that was married to Drusilla has all the makings an dates, but they were married in 1882 four years before Caroline died, if this is my Andrew seems there would of been a divorce.or something to separate the family.

I’m not related to any member of this family.

1940 is the last available census at this time.

And remember that there is a 20 yr gap in the census records from 1880 - 1900. 1890 census was destroyed by fire in the 1920's; so add 20 yrs to everyone's age in 1880. Some ppl may have died.

OH Vital Records -
Prior to September 7, 1949, marriages were record at the county probate courts as each county was formed. At that time, an index of all Ohio marriages was not maintained. It was not until 1949, that a statewide index of marriages that occurred in Ohio was created at the state level with the Ohio Department of Health, Office of Vital Statistics. While the state Office of Vital Statistics maintains indexes of all marriages, the county probate courts where the married couples applied for their license is where the official marriage certificate resides.

Ohio law established the Bureau of Vital Statistics on December 20, 1908. On that date, the mandatory registration of birth and death certificates occurred. Since that time, all birth and death certificates have been registered through our office.

Mark Kassouf
Compliance Manager/State Mass Fatality Planner/Chief Fraud Officer
Ohio Department of Health
Office of Vital Statistics
614-644-0165

1900 -
Name: Andrew Myers
[Andrew J Myers]
Age: 69
Birth Date: Jun 1830
Birthplace: Ohio
Home in 1900: Amanda, Hancock, Ohio
[Hancock]
Race: White
Gender: Male
Relation to Head of House: Father in Law
[Father-in-law]
Marital Status: Widowed
Father's Birthplace: Pennsylvania
Mother's Birthplace: Pennsylvania
Occupation:

Willouhby Orwick 32, 1/68 OH - farmer, married 13 yrs
Jemimah Orwick 31, 5/69 OH - 4 children
Harry Orwick 9, 12/90 OH
Delpha Orwick 7, 8/92 OH
Hazel Orwick 4, 7/95 OH
Jacob J Orwick 2, 7/97 OH
Andrew Myers 69, 6/30 OH - widowed

living next to Willouhby Orwick -
Name: William H Myers
Age: 41
Birth Date: May 1859
Birthplace: Ohio
Home in 1900: Amanda, Hancock, Ohio
[Hancock]
Race: White
Gender: Male
Relation to Head of House: Head
Marital Status: Married
Spouse's Name: Emma Myers
Marriage Year: 1884
Years Married: 16
Father's Birthplace: Ohio
Mother's Birthplace: Ohio
Occupation:

William H Myers 41, 5/59 OH
Emma Myers 31, 2/69 OH - 4 children & 3 living
Ruth Myers 14, 2/86 OH
Eddie Myers 12, 11/87 OH
Jessie Myers 9, 7/90 OH

1880 - Track Jemimah and William H. - children of Andrew!

Several other important bits of information are in the 1900 Census. First that he was born in OH, with both his parents born in PA. That Andrew married Drucilla Woodward in about 1882. And that he was born in OCT of 1831, which - if rendered correctly - would be recorded as 1832 in earlier census records.

Searching for an earlier record for Andrew Myers with this description, I found a listing from the 1880 Census in Harrison, Preble Co. OH, - adjacent to the north of Butler Co. His wife, Caroline, is a few years older that he was. They had a large family - apparently married by about 1850.
They go back in the census - 1870 as MIRES; - 1860 as MOYER. There is an old MOYER couple here from PA in 1860 among others. But there are problems finding the marriage listings and the 1850 Census. And what happens after 1880?

Have you looked at this possibility?

Thank you for responding so quickly. Yes, that was the right family on the 1850 census. In 1860 Margaret was still in St Clair with three of her children and another three were living with their Uncle John. Mary, the 3-year-old on the 1850 census is no where to be found so I'm guessing she died as well. The obituary you found was his nephew. Do you know if there is someway I can access the local newspapers on-line? I thought it might be interesting to see some of the local news and editorials of the time.
Thanks again for your help.
Jane

Hello, I'm not related to anyone in this family

I checked the 1850 Census and found the Mathias you are referring too, the last name was spelled Biars, is this correct.
I also found a Newspaper Obituary for a Matthias Byers in the Hamilton Daily Republican, March 25, 1893, Page 8. I suspect this is the son of the Mathias that is listed on the 1850 census, the obituary has no family information in the article

OXFORD, O., March 25—Mr. Matthias
Byers died at his home in Oxford township,
Thursday morning at 9 o'clock, after a
lingering illness caused by cancer of the
stomach. The funeral services were held
at his home this afternoon, conducted by
Rev. J. K. Brittain, assisted by Rev. E. H.
Cherington. Interment in Oxford cemetery.

I'm trying to find information on Matthias Byers death. The family immigrated in 1843 and appear on the 1850 census in St Clair Twp. Matthias is not listed on the 1860 census so I'm assuming he died. His youngest son was born in 1858. Matthias would only have been about 38 or 39 years old. He was listed as a mason on the 1850 census. I wondered if there was some sort of accident where he was killed that might be reported in the local paper. If anyone has information I would appreciate hearing from you.

Moses Ross, wife Mary Stout and children David, Howard, Aaron, Louisa and Andrew lived on a farm in Morgan twp. near Okeana. Moses, Mary, Howard, Aaron and Louisa disappeared between 1850 and 1860, and only David, Howard and Andrew appear in 1860 living and working on the farms of neighbors. What happened to the rest of them? I've been through all of the cemeteries in the area with no luck.
