Hi.I'm researching my family tie's to the Watson and Brooks of Brown Co. {MT Orab} area. My great grandmother Rose Watson was the daughter of Charles Watson and Evaline Brook's. Charles was born May 10,1851 Died age 90 yr's Oct,20,1941,Wilmington,Clinton Co.buried in Sugar Grove Cemetery,Wilmington. Son Arther is informant on Death Certificate, parent's as William Watson, Almira Kinnett. In my searching I have found the name of Evlyen Waits also as a wife of Charles listing the same sibling's to Rose. I would like to find out whom Evaline Brooks parent's may have been and if indeed Charles was married a second time. The Jones name seem's to tie in also from there. Any info would be appreciated very much. Regards Charles.

Seeking information on LEWIS COFFEE/COFFEY who was living in Union, Brown Co., Ohio as late as 1870. Lewis was born about 1803 in Mason Co., Kentucky. My family line has a Lewis (Larkin) Coffey as the father of ALVIN AARON COFFEY, born in Mason Co., KY in 1822. Alvin Coffey was emancipated in 1854 and I've learned that Lewis Coffee/Coffey was emancipated in 1843. I'm wondering if they are one and the same. Lewis Coffee shows up in the 1850,1860, and 1870 Brown Co. Censuses.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Jeannette L. He describes trips on the steamboats from Ripley to Cincinnati, many social and church events. He talks about his wife and his children with his concerns for both. I would like to get in touch with someone from this family. This is not my family, but I want to share information about the Shaws, and Oscar's references to these families: Armstrong, Bennington, Broughman, Cheesmen, Crozier, Dixon, Gaddis, Gibson, Moody, Kirkpatrick, McCrackin, Middleton, Palmer, Patterson, Reid, Shelton, Stonebrake, Wylie, and others.

Looking in Brown County, Ohio nad the Feesburg area for King family roots.

James Parker King married Emily Jane Bowsley, I believe her maiden name to be Curtis as her sister is Matilda (Curtis)Ross and her brother is William H. Curtis. Emily was known as Emma.

James Parker King was born January 1827 in Ohio or Kentucky, his father's name is James. James Parker served in the Civil War, I do not know from which state, Ohio or Kentucky.

1880 Census record has this family in Lewis County, Kentucky (Elk Fork).
All children were born in Kentucky:
Lloyd Robert King
Jueln H. King ??
Lewis Henry King b:1875
Mary Ellen King b:1876
William Nicholas King b:1880
Luther Hurell King b:1885
John T. King
Otis King

John and Otis are twins born in October 1889.

Lloyd stayed in Brown County and is buried at Feesburg, Cemetery.
Most of this family moved to Allen County, Indiana. James Parker King came to Indiana in December 1915 and died in February 1916. Two of William Nicholas King's daughters are buried at Feesburg cemetery also, Thelma Jean King and Mamie King.

Hope someone can help!

Kathy Davis KDavis63@aol.com

Stivers; it says that on 20 October 1803 James King was married to Elizabeth Larwell by Mills Stephenson.

Since Brown County was organized in 1817 from parts of Adams & Clermont Counties, it is possible that this might be one of the people you are searching for.

Sarah ? b 1832, 2nd wife of Thomas W. Collins b ~1809, Ripley

I'm trying to identify/locate a Sarah (maybe maiden or 1st marriage name "Simonton'), born Aug 1832 in PA. After a bit of census research, I believe she may have been the 2nd wife of a Thomas W. Collins, b ~ 1809, d between 1870-1880, who lived in Ripley, Brown Co, 1st married Sarah Gilliland, & had a large family there.

If anyone has access to Brown Co marriages between 1860 & 1870, I would appreciate someone checking for any record of Thomas and a 2nd wife, Sarah. Also, if there are any other records (such as a will or estate settlement for this Thomas W. Collins between 1870 & 1880), or any other historical information, I would likewise appreciate this.

In 1860 census, I find him, Thomas W Collins age 50, wife Sarah age 52, Ellen 18, Fanny 27, Eliza 16, Elizabeth 14, James 12 - all born in Ohio. There is a comparable listing of this family in the 1850 census.

In 1870 census, I find him, Thomas Collins age 61 b OH; wife Sarah age 40, born in PA, both her parents 'foreign born'; James age 20, b OH. Clearly, this is a NEW, DIFFERENT wife, Sarah, and maybe a different "son", James, because of the age difference vs the one in 1860. Living next door is Adam Collins 35 lawyer, and wife Mary 25.

In 1880 census, I find NO Thomas Collins in Ripley, Brown County OH; however, I find Sarah Collins age 48, born in PA, parents born in PA, a boarder in the household of an elderly couple, Elanger & Mary McKinley. I suspect this is the widow of Thomas W. Collins.

In 1900, I find in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co OH, Sarah Collins age 67, b 6 Aug 1832, widow, born in PA, father b in Ireland, mother b in PA. I KNOW this is the person I'm tracking.

If anyone has any information that would assist me, I would appreciate it.

Bill Allen
allen at nconnect.net
Published by The News Democrat, Georgetown, OH. 1986.

I contacted the News Democrat and they said all their copies of this publication were lost in a fire in 2001.

I have been told it contains a picture of Robert and Sally Cochran. If anyone has a copy of this publication would you scan it and send to me. Also, if there is any biographical material relating to any Cochran's in it, I would like to see that as well.

Hello---

I am researching Franklin Blanchard (1813-1901), who lived in Brown County, Ohio, until the 1850s, when he and wife Margaret Ann(e) Stephenson(?) moved to Van Buren County, Iowa.

I also need information on his wife, Margaret Ann (Stephenson?) Blanchard (1816-1888). I do believe there were other Stephenson families in Brown County, Ohio, during that era, but I've been unable to place Margaret Ann(e) with them.

According to census records, they were both born in Ohio and married in Brown County, Ohio, in 1838, and all their children (Ephraim S., Martha Ellen, Mary Bell, Elizabeth Jane, William H.) were born in Ohio.

I find them in the 1840 and 1850 censuses of Brown County, Ohio. I first find them in Van Buren County, Iowa in the Iowa state census of 1856.

Margaret Ann (Stephenson?) Blanchard died in Van Buren County, Iowa in 1888, but I do not know the site of her burial. After her death, Franklin went to live with daughter Martha Ellen Blanchard Harrel in Prowers, Lamar County, Colorado, where he died in 1901 and is buried.

After their passing, some of their children remained in Van Buren County, Iowa.

I have a brick wall regarding the names and any other information on the parents and/or siblings of Franklin Blanchard and on his wife Margaret Ann Stephenson(?).

I appreciate any information on these families.

Warmest Regards,

Donna

George Bowman and Elizabeth Roush married in Shenandoah County, VA and then relocated to one of the southern Ohio counties in about 1800. Several of us are working on delineating the various George Bowman family lines that lived in Shenandoah County, VA up to about 1820.

We are looking for a direct, male, Bowman descendent of George Bowman and Elizabeth Roush who may already have participated in one of the DNA projects, or who might be willing to do so. The results are often enlightening and exciting!

For further information on the background of this search, visit www.gbowmanhouse.weebly.com.
Does anyone have a Lavina BROOKS in their Brooks family records?

Lavina married James MATHIAS, 20 Dec 1835, Brown Co.

Lavina is one of my "brickwalls," and I would surely like to find a "home" for her. I do not know when she was born (her husband was born in 1815). Her children's death certificates & census entries suggest she was born in KY. I believe she died in Adams Co. in about 1847. Lavina Brooks & James Mathias had 4 children: Samuel, Harriet, George & James.

Any clues would be appreciated.

Margaret
PS: I am posting this query to the Brown Co., OH Message Board.
Henry Cochran's ancestors

I am trying to trace the ancestry of Henry Cochran, who was possibly born in Brown county and is known to have died in 1884 and is probably in Millville cemetery, Butler county.
Henry had three children, Elmer, Harry and Carey, with his wife Mary Elizabeth Griffith. I am descended from his son Harry L. Cochran and have most of this branch of the family.

I am thinking that Henry's grandfather may have been General John Cochran (b 9/19/1781, PA; d 9/19/1864 Oh). I see from the book "History of Brown County, Ohio" that General Cochran had a son John Jr., whom I believe is the same as listed in both the 1850 and 1860 censuses for Huntington TWP., Brown county as having a son Henry. Henry would have been born about 1843 from his age in the 1850 census.

The 1870 census for Brown county, Huntington TWP, shows a Henry and Mary E. Cochran with a son Elmer, and possibly two other children which I can't read on the PDF I downloaded. Henry is 27 years old in 1870, so the age is right, and his father was born in Ohio.

Is anyone familiar General John Cochran's descendants? If so, I would like to know if Henry Cochran was his grandson.

Thanks,

John

Did Elizabeth JOLLY Sherry (b.c.1793) of Old Red Oak Baptist Church marry David SHERRY (b.c. 1789)?

Is Alexander JOLLY’s (abt 1764/c1834) daughter, Elizabeth JOLLY Sherry, the wife of David SHERRY, buried in City Cemetery, Connorsville, Fayette, IN?

Does anyone have insight into the JOLLY/SHERRY family of Old Red Oak Baptist Church, Ripley and Union Township, Brown Co, OH? I tried writing SHERRY/JOLLY researchers, Sharon M. Mills and Cyndy Jolly Zuck but have not had luck reaching them.

1. Will Abstract shows Elizabeth Sherry (Eliz. JOLLY Sherry) as daughter of Alexander JOLLY:

“JOLLY, Alexander - WRITTEN: 24 Oct 1832 PROBATED: 31 Mar 1834 WITNESSES: Henry Martin and Thomas Bratten NAMES: wife, Sarah, sons: John, Jacob, Thomas, William, Phillip and Samuel; daughters: Polly Dawess (?) and Elizabeth Sherry; granddaughter, Rebecca Burget; son Thomas' heirs EXECUTORS: Sarah Jolly and Phillip Jolly” [Abstracts of Brown Co OH Wills Bk 1, and Bk2, http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohbrown/wills.htm]

“Alexander [JOLLY] was born 1764 possibly in PA. This has not been confirmed because the first info they have been able to find on him was he signed up with the Militia in late 1700's or very early 1800's. He married Sarah KEY (KAY) sic, in Bedford CO PA in 1785(?) and in 1818 purchased land in Brown Co. Ohio and built the Red Oak Baptist Church and burial grounds, they are both buried there, this church is now gone but the burial grounds are still there, it is located on Henry Road off of Route 62.” [Cyndy JOLLY Zuck, Rootsweb JOLLY message board, Feb 2007]

The lovely tombstone of Elizabeth __________ Sherry is legible, but broken in half, lying face up, in the old section (far left corner) of City Cemetery, Connorsville, Fayette Co., IN. This Elizabeth ________ Sherry died at age 69 yrs, 8 mos, 11 days, as etched on her legible tombstone. She was born about 30 March 1793 [PA] it seems from a backwards calculation from Dec 10, 1862. She is buried near her husband, David SHERRY, born abt 1789. The Connorsville library has cemetery information.

Their son, Daniel SHERRY (1831/1913), is said to have been born near Sommerville, OH (Butler Co, OH it seems) then moved to Fayette Co, IN in his 4th year of life- Daniel SHERRY married Sarah Elizabeth GEORGE (1835/1913). I am hoping these puzzle pieces can fall together. Thanks in advance for any help.

Dee in Cincinnati

Is there anyone with any information about the Johnston/Johnsons who settled in Byrd Twp., Brown Co. when it was part of Adams Co.? There were several Johnston/Johnsons who settled there by 1807 under the same entry #554, from Nathaniel Fox, Joseph Johnston, John Johnston, Robert Johnston. Also owning land there was James Johnson. Listed also in Byrd Twp. in 1807 was Eli Reeve, whose grandson married into my Johnson family many years later. I would like to find out, if I could, where these people lived in Byrd Twp., to establish a connection. A later family, arriving between 1816 nd 1820, was the William Shields family. I would be interested in
hearing from anyone interested in these families

At an antique store in Delaware OH I found 2 photos of Albert J Grim. The first says:

Albert J Grim, Ripley, Oh
This photo was taken on Jany 5th 1902

In the 2nd photo he looks a little older. It was taken in Hamilton OH. It just says Albert J Grim on the back.

I think this is Albert Joseph Grim, son of Lewis (or Louis) Grim and Emma Stamm. There's another photo still in the shop of an older man which also has some German writing on it that also looks like it says Grim. Perhap that photo is Lewis Jr or Lewis Sr.

Joecan

I recently visited my brother at his newly purchased farm in Brown Co near Aberdeen. He showed me an old family graveyard at the top of a hill on his property. Many of the headstones were down, much obscured by eroded soil, or so weathered, they were unreadable. I made a few notes on the ones easiest to read and are posting them below. Perhaps in the spring or summer next year, I can go do a better job of trying to transcribe all that are possible.

NELSON, Stella N, dau of Wm NELSON & Elizabeth COVERT, wife of Edward LAWILL, b. 19 Jan 1871, d. 7 May 1914

LOW, Dora, wife of Joseph H LOW, b. 4 Jan 1852, d. 7 Jun 1889

SCOTT,Evaline, wife of Solmon SCOTT, b. 3 Sep 1852, d. 9 May 1887

SCOTT, Jemima, wife of Daniel SCOTT, d. 24 Sep 187?, 63(or 68)y,2m,25d

SCOTT, Sarah A, dau of D&J SCOTT, d. 6 Oct 1854, 16y6m20d

SCOTT, Jane, wife of Joseph SCOTT, d. 17 Jul 1849

SCOTT, Darius, b. 26 Aug 1850, d. 26 Jan 1914 m. I have one piece of info that they were buried in New Hope Cemetery, but I have not been able to find this with a search. The family lived in Pike Township since the 1830's. Is there an early history of this township? Accordng to census records, both James and Margaret were born in PA.

I'm looking for the parents of Nancy J. Evans, who married Benjamin Pittenger in 1850 in Brown County, Ohio. Benjamin, son of James Pittenger, lived in Byrd Township. I suspect her father may have been named William, since she named her first son, William and her second son, James after his paternal grandfather.

Nancy was born in Brown County about 1832 and died in Ross County, Ohio about 1855. There are so many named Evans in Brown County. Does anyone have any mention of Nancy in a family record that can link her to her parents?

For those of you who have Catholic lines in Southeastern Ohio, you might find new information on this website. There are several different resources on this page, but I found several unknown children for families that I have been researching in the St. Joseph (Perry County) Early Baptisms 1818-1834. These records cover all the counties in SE Ohio, not just Perry. Many baptisms at that time were performed by traveling priests.

http://www.catholicrecordsociety.org/projects/index.html

Happy hunting!
Lynn Koehler
