I'm not related to this family.

If you suspicions are correct there should be a death cert. available as -

Ohio law established the Bureau of Vital Statistics on December 20, 1908. On that date, the mandatory registration of birth and death certificates occurred. Since that time, all birth and death certificates have been registered through our office.

Statement source -
Mark Kassouf
Assistant State Registrar/Chief Fraud Officer
Ohio Department of Health
Office of Vital Statistics

If you know where James is burries, write or call the cemetary asking for his information. Cemeteries record date of internment not the date of death.

It really helps if you can give a bit more info - wife, children, etc. Cemetery where buried? How certain are you of birth date?

According to several census he was born Jan 1848 and it is known that he was born in PA. His parents and James (who never married) are buried at Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery, Monday Creek Twp., Perry County, Ohio. I have been to the church which has moved and there are no records of the what they call early deaths. There are no death records, obits, or anything else in Hocking, Perry, or Athens. Franklin could not find anything either. The stone reads, parents and son so that is a no go too. Father John Donley died 1902, mother Zillah or Jane died 1905, James is seen in Logan in 1910 and never again. County lines moved according to the Historical Society so in 1900 they lived in Monday Creek, Hocking County, but now it is Monday Creek, Perry County. I am attempting to find his death date so that we can put it on the stone. Elaine
