My gggrandfather, Jesse Palmer, resided with his family in Canaan Township in Athens CO during this time period. He did not serve in the Civil War in any capacity I'm aware of. I am wondering as to why he might not have served, maybe religious? Any information would be appreciated.

Thomas Hemsley born 14 Feb 1875, s/o Robert H Hemsley & Catherine Hughes married Margaret Brown d/o Joseph and Isabell Brown about 1904. Margaret was born about 1880 possibly in England. They lived in Trimble Township, Athens Co., Ohio from 1910 to 1930 as reported in the censuses for those years. I have not been able to locate either of their deaths, I’ve checked on Ancestry.com their Ohio Deaths database and their SSDI database. I also checked The Ohio Death Certificate Index at the Ohio Historical Society Site and The SSDI on Rootsweb. I found nothing on Thomas or Margaret. I suspect they died between 1944 and 1958 but I don’t known for sure. I know of three children. The two girls never married and are now dead. Their son is also dead but he married and may have had children, again I don’t know. I live in England so am unable to travel to Athens Co. and check the archives. Does any one have information on their marriage and/or deaths it would be greatly appreciated. Or suggestion for somewhere else I can check. Thanks for any help.

Herschel WOOLEY Murder??

I am looking for info on my great-great-grandfather Herschel Wooley's death. I have found a couple of articles in the Athens Messenger (1*Jan*/12/1928) and the Zanesville Signal (1/1/1928, 1/3/1928, 1/11/1928)that refer to Herschel's death and the arrest of a Richard Richardson of Zanesville, but Mr. Richardson was soon after aquitted. According to one of the articles, Herschel was found in an unconscious state on the Nelsonville Pike, between Neslonville and Logan, around 1 am the morning of October 12, 1924. He died never regaining consciousness within a few days. Herschel had been visiting his wife and children at the home of her parents (her name was Helen Rife, and she had been staying with her parents after she had had an operation of some sort). The police believed (from the Zanesville Signal, 1/3/1928) that he was either a victim of a "hit-and-skip" or that he had been "taken for a ride" and murdered. A quantity of broken glass was found near Herschel's body, and he had a double fracture to the skull.

The last article I have found (using Ancestry.com) has Richard Richardson being released and the police seeking a William Griffin of New Pittsburgh, Ohio and a Arthur Rice of St. Clairsville, Ohio and that a charge of first degree murder would be handed down to them.

I do have an article that refers to both Richard Richardson and William Griffin (and their families), as well as several other families, "all spent the Fourth at home in Buchtel." (The Messenger, Athens, Ohio July 9, 1928) So William Griffin was not found guilty?? Was he ever arrested?

It is a family belief that Herschel was killed by his brothers-in-law, Helen's sisters' husbands. I have not found proof of their marriages as of yet. Helen's parents were Willis (or Robert) and Loretta (Allman) Rife. Through census records I know they had at least 12 children. In 1910 she lists 8 children born 7 living, in 1920 the 3 eldest girls are gone and 4 more children have been born. Helen had a sister named Hazel (b Sep 1897), and there is a Hazel that married William Griffin, dates match but I do not have a marriage record to prove this was Hazel Rife. Helen also had sisters named Jennie (b Jul 1894), Grace (b abt 1906), and two much younger sisters not yet of marriagable age.

Helen and Herschel had 4 children at the time of his death, Elza Leo (b 20 oct 1917), Venus Margaret (b 14 mar 1919), Verna Lacy (b 23 Apr 1920), and Robert E. (b abt 1924). All but Robert were given up by Helen to family and friends. Verna (my great grandmother) was adopted by Helen's aunt Verna (Allman, Loretta's sister) McConaha. She grew up as Verna McConaha in the Nelsonville area.

Anyone who may be able to help me on this mystery or this family, I would greatly appreciate it! Verna passed away in December 2005 but her children and other descendants would love to know more. Where would information on Herschel's murder be found? Do I write the courthouse? Thank you very much in advance for any and all assistance!

Jodi Roessler
Hi. I'm looking for information or census reports for Charles L. Carrigan. I have a 1930 census with him and his wife, Eliza, in it, but would like to find some earlier reports if anyone has any access to them. I know in 1910 they were in Perry County. I don't know when they moved to Athens. They were in the Trimble Village census in 1930. Eliza died in 1944 so she should still be in the 1940 census yet.
Please send me any information at cdetgen@yahoo.com.
Thank you very much

Caren Detgen

Trying to help out a friend who never knew his father. His father died of Brain Cancer before he was born. We know that his father was Stanley Leonard the son of Joseph James Leonard and Mary Marie Litchen. Joseph was born in Athens County abt. 1901 according to his marriage license in Crawford County, PA he is the son of Joseph and Mary Leonard. I found this family in the 1910 Census in Trimble, Joseph 40, Mary 30, Mary 16. Joseph 9, Mike 8, and Anna and John 5 anything on this line would be helpful. We were told that Joseph born in 1901 was stabbed to death sometime in the late 30's early 40's but have found no record of his death.

Thankyou,
Donna

Just a thought...
After visiting the Athens county area this past week, I found myself wondering why we "Genealogists, researchers, family members of the people in FORT STREET CEMETERY" do nothing about the lack of concern as to the condition of this "HISTORIC CEMETERY".

We will tramp all over the hill taking pictures, looking for headstones, but where is our concern for the lack of proper care for this Historic Cemetery? The condition of what headstones are left is unbeileveable. Most stones are unreadable or cracked in half, laying on the ground or toppled over laying on it's side. From what I found out this week, 1/4 of the people in this cemetery are Military, they fought for the US, where is our pride for our family members who served our country?

I guess since the cemetery is so old, and they were only our great great great great grandparents they really don't mean anything to us now. Right? For myself, I know according to the Cemetery book, about 1/3 of my ancesters are in that Cemetery the Hardy's, Robinson's, and Bateman's. But since no one seems concerned with the condition of this cemetery, I guess my point is moot.

I on the other hand, will try to see if there can be anything done with my families headstone's or the lack of one. I found only 1 "Headstone/Marker of my family, Luke Hardy. Burried up on the very top of the hill along the upper most fence line, headstone 90% unreadable, but there was a plus in all of this, Luke Hardy does have a plac just below his headstone, 100% readable. He was also in our military.

One last word on Fort Street Cemetery, the founding father Daniel Nelson is also burried up there on the hill, his plot of stone is also in disrepair, lacking the same attention as the other's on the hill. Rather a sad thought as to how we care for something "HISTORIC" and as valuable as our past.

Frustrated, shocked, and venting
Kimberley Page
Clarks, Nebraska

Are either of your North families related to an Ellwood NORTH, who is shown living in Trimble Township in the 1930 Census? His son Lloyd "Blackie" NORTH married Lottie GILL NORTH, who was a cousin of my grandfather, Jacob "Jake" WAGNER, who lived in Buchtel. Jake and Blackie were good friends and I remember them spending a lot of time together when I was young.

Nehemiah Davis

The following was written down in my great-grandmother's hand, transcribed from a Nelsonville, Ohio newspaper in 1883. I do not have the original newspaper, only her transcription of it as well as a letter her mother sent her mentioning how lucky they were to have found the old newspaper article.

"(Printed in a Nelsonvill paper about 1883).

"An Old Letter.

From Elder Nehemiah Davis, of Sunday Creek, O. to REv. Elihu Thayer, of Kingston, N.H. (date unknown).

Dear Sir: I am unde the necessity of making a friend of you or some other person in your vicinity to do some business for me, as I live a great distancce from your parts. As Congress has passed an act for the relief of soldiers who were in the United States service for nine months or longer in the Revolutionary war. I enlisted in the service of the United States in teh Revolutionary war the 1st of January, 1776, in Captain Philip Tilton's company and Col. Poor's regiment, in the New Hampshire line of troops, and served my country faithfully for that year.

The way and manner of my serving the army is as follows: there came a snow sometime in the month of November, 1776, and Major Tilley with about one thousand men went from Mount Independence where we were then stationed, to track or find some Indians- who were lurking around, and I, lying down in the night, with my blanket under teh side of a log, I took a great cold. Next day we returned to our tents at Mount Independence, and I was taken very sick with the fever, extremely sick, and the year being nearly out for which we enlisted, Lieut. Joseph Huntoon (note: the last name is ? as I couldn't definitely say it's Huntoon, due to her cursive), my brother-in-law, under whom I enlisted, was sent home with about one third of the regiment who were feeble or invalids, and I should have been sent with them if I had been able to go. Orders came for the rest of the regiment to go to New Jersey, and Dr. Pebe (?) came to me and told me I must go with them. I was taken across Lake George in a boat, from thence towards Albany. I rode in a cart with the officers' baggage and about fifteen soldiers commannded by Captaiin Clough (?) who had charge of me, and in company with the regiment, and I riding in the rain three or four days I took a relapse, and we put up at a tavern, and in the morning they left me for a dying man. I fainted and was gone apparently, but recovered again. The said Captain Clough who had charge of me, was gone, the regiment was gone and I left alone at the tavern, and out of money save $1.25 loaned me by Ensign Robert Pike. In this deplorable circumstance I was left, expecting death to discharge me, and thought of no other discharge, neither do I think my officers thought of any other discharge.

My year being out except a few days, and separated from all my fellow soldiers, after a few days I felt better, and rode seventy miles on a cart and on a wagon, and soon overtook Captain Clough of Cantaburry, of our regiment, so through the goodness of a kind God I got home to Poplin, where my father Timothy Davis lived, who, with my mother, were members of Kingston Congregational Church of Christ. Mr. Amos of Tappan was their pastor while he lived, then the Rev. Eliui Thayer took charge of the flock.

To you, sir, or some other person of fidelity, I apply to find some living evidences of my service that I may receive pensioin as a private soldier. I served my country faithfully for the year 1776, and neither was I put under guard once for the whole year. I felt resolved to do my duty and leave the event with the great Ruler of heaven and earth, and the _____ (can't read) spared my life to this day and I believe my peace is made with him through my glorious Redeemer.

The last of my wages I received of Lieut. Powell, after I returned of home, but as no written discharges were given I want witnesses of my service.

Added- Caleb Huntoon (?), formerly of Kingston, who knew me, and of our company, John Smith, of Stratam, to whom I sold my gun, and one of our company.

Circumstances- When Ensign Robert Pike left me at the tavern, sick, he left me $1.25, and I told him to take it out of my wages, which my paymaster told me he did, and I spoke to him about it a few years before I came from the District of Maine, where I was preaching at New Market in a time of reformation. Also Sergeant John Sweet will remember me at Saratoga, on our return, when I was sick. I was lying down by the fire, and James Pating came in drunk and told me I should not lie there. Sergeant Sweet todl him I should, and Pating took a piece of a slab and motioned to send it at him and Sergeant Greeley in bed. Sergeant Sweet sprung and knocked him down, and crooked the barrel of his gun. By this circumstance he will remember me.

Nehemiah Davis
To Rev. Elihu Thayer"

"The date of this letter is not known. It was written about sixty years ago, as the writer has been dead more than half a century."

GRAHAM Family/Athens Co.

Hello Athens County!

I last posted in 2004 and thought I would try it again with some updated information.

I am looking for anyone who might have information about the following GRAHAM family. I do not know the names of the parents, but it appears that the father was born in Ireland (around 1760/70) and the mother was born in PA. The following children were born to this family:

Samuel, b. abt. 1794 in PA, married Sarah LOWRY on 25 Nov 1819, Athens Co., d. before 1874

Adam, b. abt 12 Jan 1797 in VA, unmarried, d. 24 Jan 1882, Hocking Co.

John (my direct line), b. abt. 1799/1800 in PA, married Rachel SAMPSON on 23 Jun 1823, Athens Co., d. unknown

William, b. abt. 1801 in PA, married Hannah BUCK on 28 Aug 1820, Athens Co., d. before 1874 probably in Indiana.

Lemuel, b. abt. 1810 in PA, married Sarah/Sally MATHENY on 17 Jun 1835, Athens Co., d. before 1874

Betsey Jane, b. abt. 1812 in MD, married James DRANE/DRAIN on 15 Jul 1830, Athens Co., d. 10 Feb 1882, Athens Co.

In addition to this information, it appears that at least 3 family members entered the Athens County Infirmary between 1857 and 1859. Betsey Jane GRAHAM was described as insane with family difficulties listed as the cause. John GRAHAM was admitted as destitute and intemperate habits. James GRAHAM (a son of John) dies of consumption in the infirmary. I get the feeling that some tragic event occurred during this time period that adversely effected John, Lemuel, and Betsey Jane and their families.

Does anyone recognize these people or may know of some event that occurred in the county during this time that may have disrupted these families?

If helpful, I also have the children of these 5 brothers and sister that I can post.

Thanks for your help!

See FLORENCE HORTON in the Hyde Bldg."

"IT MUST BE SO"
"This morning about 4 o'clock when Mrs. Wilson got up to do the weekly washing, Mr. Wilson, who had been up for an hour lighting the kitchen fire and getting the boiler on, told her that the armistice had been signed again, this time officially and without any monkey-doodle buisness about it. Mrs. Wilson, in strictest confidence, a few minutes later told Mrs. Carsey Jones over the back yard fence, and within a half-hour the whole country knew it, excepting Buchtel, who will find it out tomorrow. So after all, both the United Press and the Associated Press were scooped by the clothes line service.

Everybody is mighty glad this suspense is over. All knew something was due to happen, but of course noone could tell whether it would be a boy or a girl. To start with it was announced four or five days in advance. This is not usually done among our best families. Kind of embarrassing too to pa and ma, we say. But anyway some nosey guy heard the cat squall and thot (sic) of course the big event has transpired, and without waiting to ask the doctor and verify things, he immedicatlely spread the news abroad. So naturally everybody celebrated. There's lots of people that's still at it. We've got folks right here in our own town that won't need to start again. They can just take another drink and keep going.

But now, it seems to be here this time, at least for a few days, and its a welcome guest. We'll all try and show it a good time and celebrate its arrival with whatever pep is left in us.
