As a hobby, I rescue old photos that have identification on them, and attempt to locate family to send them to.

I have one of a young girl, that was taken in Conneaut, OH late 1800s. She's wearing a drop waist stripped dress and a straw hat, that she's holding the brim down on either side of her face. It's a real playful picture. Written on the back is: Celia E. Cox 1891.

If you'd like to obtain this, please contact me at: digginroots@yahoo.com

Kathy

Hi,

I am trying to research Martha M. Allen. I think that her maiden name was King. Her son was Fred King Allen with King as a middle name, I am guessing that may have been her middle name. The Allen family is from Austinburg originally but may have been in other areas of ashtabula county. If this is Martha King Allen, she was born in 1845 and died in 1904. Alicia Henry posted a recent query about Martha's sister who married a Robert B Schoolfield. I think that these two families are related to mine.

Martha M. Allen

Could Martha M. Allen, b.ca.1844 in the 1880 Ashtabula Fed. Census be the same Martha that you're seeking? I suspect that her maiden name was King. She married John W. Allen in Austinburg, Ashtabula County, Ohio around 1870. The 1880 census lists Martha Allen as being born in Ohio, her father born in Conn. and mother born in Ohio. Their children were Frank L., b. ca 1870, Letta F, B ca 1872, Fred King Allen, b. ca 1874, John W.Allen, Jr., b. ca 1873 and an infant b. ca 1879. John W. Allen's parents were also listed as settled in Austinburg. John, b. ca 1804 was born in Ireland. His wife, Fidelia (Wright?) was born in Ohio. They must have married ca. 1840 in Ohio. Let me know if you can verify any of this. I found this family on Ancestry but have no other supporting documents. thanks.

Mike Pearson

I have recently purchased the house owned by Aralzaman and Ph[o]ebe Calaway between 1880 and 1900, in Austinburg, Ohio. I've pretty well established that the house was built in 1879, and they bought it from the builder in 1880, when the property records show that he sold 100 ac in the township and bought this half-acre piece in the village. Aralzaman would have been 79 at this point, Ph[o]ebe 38 or 39 and as the unmarried youngest child, probably keeping house for him.
I'd be very interested in information about the family, and in particular photos of father and daughter.

I am researching the Elzur Rawdon family. His son, Burton Freeman RAWDON was my great grandfather. I am specifically interested in the fate of Elzur's son, GUY E. RAWDON, b. 1862 d. abt 1896. He married Myrtle REYNOLDS abt 1900 and they had three girls: Lynn (Evelyn), Theo and Sadie in NY state. Family lore says Guy was killed in a "pumper accident" while fighting a fire. By 1900 Myrtle has remarried and is "PRESTON". The three little girls were farmed out among the Rawdons except for Sadie, who went to her mother's sister, Caroline TRASK. WHERE DID GUY DIE? Pretty sure they married in Ashtabula Co. Maybe went with brother Harry W. RAWDON to Pomfret, NY.(?). At home in Ashtabula in 1880 and widow in Ashtabula in 1900, but girls born in NY. WHERE DID GUY RAWDON DIE?

Hi,

I am searching for any information on the birth parents of Arlene Warren b. May 16, 1934. Her parents passed around 1943 and she was adopted by a friend of the family, so her name was later changed. I only have copies of the SS application which lists the name change and the adoptive parents names. Any suggestions on where to search would be appreciated. Thanks!

M

I'm looking for any information on Fred and Hulda Romig and their children (Martha, Otto, William, Charles, Margaret, and Edna) who had a 40 acre farm on Dawsey Road in Footville (Trumbull Township). They moved to Footville from Cleveland between 1905 and 1910. Their children had moved back to Cleveland by 1920 except Otto who had a farm in Thompson. The 1930 census shows Fred and Hulda still living on the farm. Fred died in 1938 and Hulda in 1946. Both are buried in the Footville Cemetery on Trask Road.Martha and her husband Nate Rini moved back in the area in the 1960's. They are also buried in the Footville Cemetery.

I am most interested in finding out when they purchased and sold the farm. I am also interested in involvement in the community, I'd like to hear from anyone who's family may have known them. I still have family ties to the area.

DORAN - Ashtabula

I am looking for the father of Frank(Francis) and James Doran of Ashtabula County, Ohio. Frank was born about 1859 and James was born about 1862. They were both born in Ohio.

Their mother is Catharine (Katherine, Kate) Doran but got remarried to Michael Fitzgerald in November of 1865 so Doran was not her maiden name.

Francis and James are listed in the 1870 census living in the same household as the Fitzgeralds. By 1880 Frank is married to Mary Quinn and his brother James Doran lives with them.

Catharine immigrated to the US in 1850. She was born in Ireland about 1833. However, I have no idea what her maiden name was or the name of her first husband (? Doran).

The Dorans are my ancestors.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have found that East 16th St in Ashtabula is the current location of what used to be Sibley St. I am researching the Olix family, who lived at 118 Sibley St in Ashtabula for at least a couple decades around 1900-1920. How would I find out where 118 Sibley St would currently be located?

I have asked before to have this marriage looked up in the Ohio marriages 1857-1900 Ashtabula County. But have new info that the husband’s name, which was the only last name known, was wrong. But not have the wife’s name from Sweden Emma (Ema) Augusta Pettersdotter born 22 Mar 1859, married Edward Nelson (this is the name our family know and we are under the conclusion that he has changed). She immigrated in 1877 and first child abt 1881.
Variations of her name may be Peterson, Petersdotter, Petersen. Members of the Swedish Evanglistic? Church in Ashtabula.
Can anyone look at this and see if this marriage exists. Thank you very much in advance.

Am seeking death information on Maria Bennett Wilder, the widow of Israel J. Wilder who died in Wayne (now Lindenville), Ashtabula County, on 28 November 1850. They married in Medina, Ohio on 12 October 1838 and removed to Calhoun County, Michigan where they were recorded in the 1840 and 1850 censuses. They had four daughters, the youngest of whom Etsa/Elsie Wilder married Franklin Wilcox on 25 May 1867; they are buried with his parents in Hayes Cemetery in Wayne. Israel was buried in Roberts Cemetery with his parents, Henry & Dencie (Jones) Wilder, originally from Canandaigua, Ontario County, NY. I can find no record of Maria Bennett Wilder being buried in either cemetery. Would appreciate any information. Thank you. Ed Woodyard

I have a very old school roster for School District No. 1 of Morgan Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio. The dates are September 3, 1900 - May 3, 1901. Fred Hubbard was the teacher. The school board consisted of Thomas McKelvy, Frank Bailey and John Askew.

In the first listing, the pupils are: Louis Cook, Clifford Askew, Willie Askew, George Bailey, Charlie Charter, Clarence Mallery and Robert Scofield.

Second listing: Frank Smith, Eli Mallery, Johnie Sikes, Allie Askew, Eva Askew, Tillie Charter and Ethel Cook.

Third Listing: Maud Cook, Maud Mallery, Mary McKelvy, Leila Scofield, Opal Carlen, Maudie Sikes, Bernerd Carlen and Nellie Scofield.

I am assuming the breaks in the listing of the names indicates a different grade level. Can send scan of actual school card with names of pupils.

Thomas E. McGinnis and Mary Jane Gaffney, other Gaffneys

I finally figured out the mystery of my Gaffneys!
My James T. Gaffney born abt. 1838 Ire, settled in Erie PA, his 2nd wife Alice Carlow was my great aunt. She had 3 daus, one died...when she died the girls were handed to relatives. Mary elizabeth to my Mullins/Shean/Carlow side and Alice was handed to the Gaffney side which I've been trying to find. In the 1900 census I could not figure out 'who' Alice at age 13 is staying with, still can't as she's listed as a cousin in Conneaut, Ashtabula, OH...poor spelling it might be McGowan...still a mystery. BUT.......
I've found James T. had a brother John F. Gaffney b. abt 1835, who was in the census Ashtabula County OH in 1880. of their 7 children, the oldest dau, Mary, Jane or Mary Jane...was the only one born in wisconsin, others in OH. But the Mary Elizabeth lived with Mary Jane and her husband/family in Chicago IL in 1910 census, which was the only census I could not find her, by 1920 she was with the Sheans. (1900 with my Mullins in Warren, PA)
Any Gaffney information in addition to any received, would be greatly appreciated. I would like to figure out what family name Alice stayed with in 1900. Also, in 1910-1920, if those families were Gaffney-related. All in OH.
Ginny

I am searching for this person, I'm not sure if McGinnis is a maiden/married name. All I know is she is a couzin to Alice Gaffney, and both resided in OHIO.
I know Alice had Gaffney relatives (probably an Aunt) in Ashtabula County, OH, after her father died (they resided in Erie, PA) in 1890's Alice went to live with them. Alice had a sister, Elizabeth who went to live with her mother's family in Warren PA and then to another Aunt, Shean family in Chicago, IL.
Surname could be McGoorty, McGinnis, McGowan??? I do know Alice had a aunt Elizabeth Gaffney who sponsored her as well as a JP McGoorty. One the census I found Alice Gaffney living with an Aunt and couzins in Conneaut, Ashtabula OH, but I cannot read the surname but it's something like the above Mc's.
HOPE someone can help???????????????????
GINNY

Bishop (1880-?) and their children Marion (1906-?) and Kenneth B (1908-abt 1910). Kenneth was a steamship captain and the son of Duncan McRae and Isabella Cameron of Grey County, Ontario.
Henrietta M. Cook Hunt Munger, wife of Alfred Charles Hunt & Robert Munger

Hello -- My ancestor Henrietta ("Nettie") M. Cook was born March 27, 1848 in Ashtabula County, Ohio, near Hartsgrove. She died March 16, 1933 and is buried in Eagleville Cemetery near Jefferson, Ashtabula County, Ohio. She was first married to Alfred Charles ("Charlie") Hunt of Hartsgrove (b. 1841, a son of Ezra Hunt and Ruthanna Hitchcock). Henrietta and Alfred Charles had four children: Juliette ("Julia"); Wallace William, b. 1870; Judson William, b. 1872; and Frances, b. 1875. Henrietta and Alfred Charles separated in 1875, and their children were divided among neighbors and relatives. According to papers at the county courthouse, Juliette went to live with her grandparents, Ezra and Ruthanna Hunt; Wallace William went to live with the Follett and then the Ashley families; and Judson went to live with Sylvester and Sarah (Cook) Keech, who I believe were his aunt and uncle. (I think Sarah and Henrietta were sisters.) What puzzles me about Henrietta is this: Records at the Ashtabula County Courthouse say Henrietta's and Alfred Charles Hunt's divorce case was "dismissed without prejudice" in 1879. However, Henrietta married Robert Munger in 1881 even though her first husband was still alive. (Alfred Charles Hunt died in 1910) I believe Henrietta was Robert's third wife. Robert had children with his first two wives. His children with Henrietta were: Alicia Irene, Jackson Stonewall and George Harmon. There are two mysteries I would like to solve regarding Henrietta. First, was she really divorced from husband number one when she married husband number two? If so, where is the record of her divorce? Second, who were Henrietta's parents? Her death certificate says her father was Charles Cook, but several family trees on Ancestry.com list her father as Stephen Cook. Her mother's name was supposedly Elizabeth or Eliza, but it is unclear what the last name was. I would also like to find an old photo of Henrietta Cook Hunt Munger, if possible. Since she died in 1933, it seems likely somebody out there has one. I do have a photo of her grave marker but that's it. If anyone has any information, please e-mail me at RebeccaSNS@embarqmail.com Thanks!

Winch family of Ashtabula County Ohio

Researching the Winch family of Ashtabula County, Ohio. Brothers David, Abijah Jr. and Joseph Winch came to Ashtabula County around 1820. They were the sons of Abijah Winch Sr. and Rebeckah Warner. My ancestor, David Winch, b. 1797, was married to Laura Shepard. Laura was born 1803 in NY. Her parents are unknown. David and Laura lived in Richmond and had 14 children: Emeline (m. Robert Henry), Ethelbert (m. Hannah Sturgis), Lucinda (m. John Waful), Eliza Ann, Lucy Ann (m. Lewis Leonard), Charlotte (m.George Burlingham), Samuel (m. Eliza Wheeler), Emma Jane (m. Walalce Henry), Philo (m. Jane Graham), David Jr. (m. Sarah Graham and then Rachel August), Albert, Laurette, Jeanette (m. Jacob Richards) and Elbert. My ancestor was Ethelbert. Ethelbert and his wife Hannah Sturges (Sturgis?) were wed about 1850 and had three children: Albert Perry, b. 1851, Sarah Alvira, b. 1853, and Freeland, b. 1856. Ethelbert died in 1857, and Hannah was remarried to Lester Turner. They had twin sons Lester and Sylvester and also a daughter Flora. Hannah was born around 1827 and died before 1870. She was supposedly part Native American. Her son, my gr-gr-grandfather, Albert Perry Winch, was first married to Marietta Nichols and second to Lydia Lattin. His sister, Sarah Alvira, was married first to a Mr. Barrows, second to Ephraim Case, third to Daniel Cozad, fourth to Andrew Knapp, fifth to George Gary. I have more info.

I have an obituary for Mrs. Huldah Smith, from "Obituaries of Ashtabula Co 1831 - 1869" by the Ashtabula Sentinal & Conneaut Reporter. It reads as follows, "Smith, Huldah, W. of H.B., d. Aug 25, 1865, Colebrook, ae 58".
Why did the news papers choose not to include the place the deceased was to be buried. The Ashtabula Telegraph did the same thing in 1854 when Hulad's first husband, William Gillett, died. Now I do not know where either one is buried. So, I am asking if someone more familiar with cemeteries in Ashtabula Co., poarticularly in the Colebrook area, has access to burial information, could help me out. Huldah had a son, Orlando Mortimer Gillet living in Green Twp, Trumbull Co. which is five miles south of Colebrook in the 1870 census. So I am thinking possibily his mother was with Orlando's family when she died. If anyone can help locate the grave of Huldah Smith let me know.
Good morning from Colorado -
I am researching the Holcomb / Wilcox family connection. We have come to a dead end on Austin Holcomb line.
Austin Holcomb m. Elizabeth Russell
Austin died young 1865.
4 children
Finetta
Charles
Flavius
Albert

Charles is the line we have from my wife. Paula Jo HOlcomb
Albert died 1 yr old
Flavius died 17 yr old
The only one we are working on now is Finetta. We believe she married Milo Wilcox based on the 1880 Census.
Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace

Milo WILCOX Self M Male W 44 OH Farmer CT CT

Nellie WILCOX Wife M Female W 34 OH Keeps House OH CT

Elizabeth HOLCOMB Mother inLaw Widow Female W 67 CT Housework CT CT

Another census in 1900 has Rose Rawles niece living with Milo Wilcox.

http://genforum.genealogy.com/oh/messages/50029.html

1900 census, Colebrook, Ashtabula, OH:
head, Milo WILCOX, 64, b Feb 1836, md 27 yrs, OH CT OH, farmer
wife, Nettie, 54, b Sep 1845, no children, OH OH OH
niece, Rose RAWLES, 27, b Aug 1872, OH Eng OH, school teacher

This is how I was able to make the connection with our families.

We have pictures of the Wilcox family headstones. Next to one of the headstones is mother father Horace Wilcox and Mary Wilcox. This has opened a new door for finding Austin and what happened to Finetta and Elizabeth. I noticed the family connection on a search on roots web with the Samuel Morse family.

Mary T. Fobes and Horace Wilcox....

I would love to find out if you have any other information regarding this line into Milo Wilcox Finetta Holcomb. Maybe this will give me a little more info regarding Austin Holcomb. I noticed Finetta changed her name to Nellie which I guess was common back then.

Kevin Meyer / Paula Meyer (Holcomb)

The Gaffney girls' parents lived in Erie, Erie, PA, the parents died and the girls were "doled" out to relatives. Elizabeth went to live with her mother's side in Warren, PA (Mullens) and later to Sheans in Chicago, IL.
Alice went to live with Gaffney relatives in Conneaut and/or Cleveland OH> I have a picture of possibly a Benita McGinnis, couzin with Elizabeth and a two other ladies.
I could not read the surname on the census in Conneaut, OH of who Alice was living with, appears to be McGinnis, McGoorty, or McGowan???? A relative stated the one lady in my picture looks like a Benita McGinnis.
HOPE someone can help???
Ginny Eakin
