Joseph FRANKLIN, d 1904, son of Thomas? Obituary?

Looking for information on a Joseph FRANKLIN that died 18 July 1904 and is buried in Perry Chapel Cemetery, in Perry. He is listed as age 81-3-23.

I thought this Joseph was son of my Thomas, but have found evidence of a Joseph in Indiana, being his son.

Does anyone know which newspapers were in the area in 1904? I would like to track down an obituary, which may hopefully give some family details.

Thank you so much for your help!

Tami

HANCE - GOLLIFF Connection, Van Wert and Allen County

Mar 8, 1859 in Van Wert co., Richard T. Hance, Jr, 1810-1883, b in Stoner, Bourbon co., KY married a woman by the name of Mary, 1828-1906. In 1850 Mary had been married to Godfrey Golliff in Monroe, Knox co., OH.

I have no idea what happened to Godfrey Golliff. Mary may have been a widow or divorced or possibly a runaway wife.

Between step children and the children Mary and Richard had together they raised 17 children.

From Richard by his first wife Elizabeth:
William C. Hance (married Caroline)
Isaac D. Hance
John Calvin Hance (married Rebecca Jane Biner)
Mary E. Hance
Vinson/Vincent S. Hance (married Nancy E. Masters)
Marinda Hance (married George W. Biner)
Columbus J (called Lum) Hance (married Harriet E. Counts)

From Mary by Godfrey Golliff:
Henry Golliff (married Rebecca Sherer then Roseanne Stopher)
Jacob Golliff (died as child)
Mary Adaline Golliff (married Jacob Bush)

From Mary in unwedded union with a married Liberty Leslie Cotton:

John Liberty Golliff (changed his name to Cotton in summer 1880 and is in census twice, once in his mothers house under Golliff, once in his motherinlaw's house as Cotton). He married Eva D. Rice.

From Mary from uncertain parentage, born after John L. Golliff-Cotton but before the marriage to Richard Hance:

William C. Golliff (married Lillie M.)
Ellen Golliff

From Mary with Richard:

Phoebe A. Hance (married Hannekamp)
Unknown Child Hance
Jeanette "Nettie" Hance (married William Slife)
Unknown Child Hance

If you are connected to any of these people, I would love to hear from you. I am particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has traced back Godfrey Golliff and knows where he is or knows what Mary's maiden name was.

Amy LITZENBERGER, d/o Amos Litzenberger & Nellie Gertrude McGary was born about 1902. Lima News on 2 Nov 1923 showed an Amy Litzenberger asking for a divorce from Howard NELSON (article says they married in May 1922). A couple of family trees on Ancesty.com showed a Howard Arthur Nelson from Lima married only to Mildred Virginia Mason. One family tree showed Amy litzenberger married 13 Sep 1919 in Lima, OH to Clarence Ray SAWMILLER. Others showed Clarence only married to Doris Murl Wooley. In 1927 and 1942, Amy is shown as Mrs. Amy GOODFELLOW(George). Would like to know if these Amy Litzenbergers are all the same one. Would also like to obtain copies of marriage applications and divorce records which should give me parents of both, maybe birth dates, and the marriage date and divorce dates. Contact me if this is possible.

Ohio Death Certificates Available Online

Death Certificates for Ohio from 1903-1953 are now available online at:

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html

You can see the actual death certificate and might be able to print it off, but some users are having problems with that function. There is a place to report problems so maybe the site needs some "tweaking" yet.

You will need to register your name and email address and wait for an email confirmation before you can use the site.

When you go to the site for the first time, if you don't have Adobe Flash Player on your computer, you will be prompted to download it. If you have a dial-up connection, be patient because everything will take a little longer to open. After you download Adobe Flash Player, you will be prompted to close your browser window to complete the download process. If you have AOL dial-up connection, you will need to sign offline completely and then sign on again.

Board Administrator
The Value of Joining Genealogy Societies

I think that it is important to join genealogy societies in the counties that are far away for you because it gives you connections in that county when you can't go there. We have a volunteer every week at the Allen County Historical Society museum library, which is the historical and genealogical library. We have a huge amount of sources there, including "larger than most counties" family files and records you won't find anywhere else.
Our members get 6 newsletters a year and a members directory which listed the members and their surnames. You would be listed. Someone may contact you or you may see someone else listed with the same surnames and you can contact them and exchange info.
The newsletter may have an article with one of your anccestors and you can submit your pedigree chart and any info on your ancestors that you wish and place queries in it. I write the newsletter and try to have queries and a pedigree chart in each issue. It's a great way to connect with others and to have help in places too far for you to go.
As I mentioned before, we have members in 29 states and probably more out of state members than local so yes, I think it's very beneficial for people who live far away.
Generally, it's good to belong to a local society so you can attend meetings and be with other people with a common interest and to learn from the programs and get acquainted with the members who attend. You can learn a lot by talking with people at the meetings who know things you don't know. So, it's good to belong to a local group even if you don't have ancestors in that area.
But it is as important or more important to belong to chapters in far away counties that are hard for you to go to, because they can help you find what you need there. They usually have volunteers to do lookups, some will go to cemeteries and take pictures for you. They know what sources are available in that county and can recommend the sources you need searched or tell you where to get the records you need.
It gives you connections in that county and helps you find other "cousins" researching the same family so you can get in touch with them and the newsletters and directory are valuable helps for the reasons I previously stated.
Message board and mailing lists are great and I use them all the time, but they can't replace having contacts with people who live there and are familiar with what's there and where everything is and the county's history.
A lot of people in genealogy societies have been involved in genealogy for a long time and are very familiar with the families and family history in their county, especially those people who have lived there all of their lives and that's a resource you can't find anywhere else.

POW/MIA Korean War, Allen Co. WOLFE

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Allen County, Ohio as his home of record.

Soldier: JERRY D WOLFE
Born: Jan. 16, 1929. Caucasian
Date of loss: Feb. 7, 1952. KIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 51 families in Ohio that have not been located. There is one family from Allen County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Several years ago, Kelly Nypaver posted that she had a Robert Downing family reunion picture from the 1890s, but her email address is no longer good. Does anyone happen to have a copy of this picture that they would be willing to email me? Grant Downing is in the picture, and he would have been my great-great uncle. Two of his children, Jennie and Robert, are also in the picture. Also, if anyone has information on this family, I'd be interested. Estella Inez Eiche and Grant Downing had ten children, and many of them remained in Allen County. Thanks so much.

Earliest Professional Photographers in Lima

I'm interested in finding out the names of the earliest professional photographers in Lima and when they started in business. My guess is that photographers probably began to open for business around the 1860s, perhaps earlier.

Conversely, do any present-day professional photgraphers in Lima go back to the 1880s?

Finally, does anyone know if the Allen County Public Library or Allen County Historical Society has collections of nineteenth century photographs of individuals?

Feel free to contact me directly.

Rich Cunningham

richcunninghamny@aol.com

Connection? -- Mary Ann SPOHN & Isaac DeLONG

I am trying to get a handle on the connections between the Isaac DeLong (b abt 1828) family and my gr gr grandfather George W. Spohn in the hopes of moving his ancesteral linage further back than his father Philip Spohn (b abt 1812, Ohio).

The reasons I am reasonably certain that a family relationship exists are:

The 1880 census for Amanda Township includes one Margaret DeLong aged 71, single and "insane" as an Aunt in George Spohn's (George being widowed) household along with his mother Elizabeth, and two of his sisters, Ameilia (later married to Henry Alspaugh); and Mary E. (crippled by rheumatism). His sister Hanna Rebecca was out of the family home married to Edward C. Hullinger by 1880.

The 1870 census for German Township enumerating the Isaac & Mary A. DeLong family includes, in addition to their children George W, Abram, Sarah, Jacob, Nancy, Fred and Charles, Isaac's mother Hannah, aged 82, and Margaret aged 60 shown to be "idiotic".

Prior to the 1880 census, Isaac DeLong and his family had moved to Kansas. It seems reasonable to assume they would have left an invalid with family members prior to their move.

Other indicators of a relationship include newspaper articles that mention things such as, "Mr. J. DeLong of Kansas is visiting GW Spohn, and others in this vicinity." (The Allen Co. Democrat, 1 Sept 1883) and "Hiram DeLong spent Sunday with GW Spohn." (The Daily Democratic Times, 6 March 1885) Both Isaac & Hiram have been said to be sons of Abraham DeLong.

In addition, I have a Victorian era scrap book that was presented to my grandfather, Norman C. Black after his mother Bessie Spohn Black's death that had been done up by his Aunt Amelia (Annie) Spohn Alspaugh at some point in time. The scrap book contains many calling cards from friends and family, including:
Freda M. DeLong
Rosa DeLong
C. E. DeLong
John DeLong
Charles W. DeLong
Charity C. DeLong
Nancy B. DeLong

I am speculating that there is a chance that George's father Philip and Isaac DeLong's wife Mary Ann Spohn may be brother and sister.

If this would be the case there is research that indicates Mary Ann's parents were Jacob J. Spohn & Margaret Hanna Hupp. If I can cement a relationship (if one exists) between Mary Ann and Philip it would give me one more avenue in tracing this very interesting line.

Any input from any researchers that might have information on these families would be greatly appreciated.

HARDEN / HARDIN Family in Allen Co.

Yes, I do mean Allen County, Ohio! Sorry!

I meant to say:

I would like to communicate with anyone who has knowledge of HARDENs or HARDINs who have roots in Allen Co., OH. My G4 grandfather was Isaac HARDEN who lived in Somerset Co., PA in the 1700s and early 1800s. One of his sons, John HARDEN or HARDIN, migrated to Allen County in the early 1800s and later moved to Knox Co. and then to Auglaize County. I understand that several generations have spelled their surname as HARDIN.

One of John's brothers, Nathan Harden, migrated to Ohio in the early 1800s with John, but he moved on to Clay Co., IN and some of Nathan's descendants still live in Clay County.

John and Nathan had a brother, George Harden, who stayed in Somerset Co., PA. However, two of George's sons, Jacob and Solomon Harden, migrated to Lee Co., IL in 1855. I descend from Jacob, who is my G2 grandfather.

Do any of John HARDIN's descendants still live in Ohio?

If there are any HARDEN/HARDIN researchers who read this message, please contact me. If you know of any males who HAVE the HARDEN or HARDIN surname who descend from Isaac Harden or any of his sons, I would like to correspond with them and let them know about the Harden.in.ing DNA Project. I'll be glad to share info with anyone.

All the best,

Mary Yonan
yonan at fgi.net

Sorry -I seem to be monopolizing the Allen County board. I am interested in learning anything about the William and Henrietta Stottlemeyer family. All that I know is that they are the parents of my great-grandmother, Minta Stottlemeyer Eiche. I'd be interested in other children, their parents,... I believe Henrietta was Henrietta Peterson before her marriage. Thank you.

In the last few years, I've had the good fortune to come across several people who have helped me with Eiche history. Any other Eiche family members out there? My line is: Sebastian Sr. and Barbara Eiche ---Sebastian Jr. and Mary Gillespie Eiche ---Leonard and Sarah Jane Harpster Eiche ---Lewis and Minta Stottlemeyer Eiche ---William Clarence and Isabel Gorrell Eiche (my grandparents). The Eiches originally settled near Lima and then, by Leonard's generation, several lived in Delphos. I'd love to hear from others researching this line.

Putnam County Ohio does not have a hospital, so if someone is ill and has to go to a hospital the closest is in Findley Ohio or Lima Ohio. In April 1914, my great-great grandparents resided in Leipsic-Putnam-Ohio. There is no death record for them in Putnam County.
I am asking if some one would check for a death record in Lima-Allen-Ohio, for Joseph Heaton who was listed as 90 years old in April 1914 on the census, and his wife Sarah Rebecca Heaton?
Any and all assistance will ge gratefully appreciated.
LInda

Jacob Ludwig and Mary Elizabeth Fink Ludwig (later Crites) had the following children: Sophia (b.1813), Jacob (b.1818), William (b. abt 1820) and George W. (b.1821).

I have some circumstantial evidence that their son William is one of my grandfathers, but I am not certain. My g-g-g grandfather William Ludwig married Anne Jemima Webber in Pike Co., OH (just south of Pickaway) in 1842. They had at least 2 sons (George W. and William) before 1850 but I cannot positively find any of the family until Anne Jemima Ludwig and her two sons appear in the 1870 census after William has presumably died or divorced. I cannot find him in either the 1850 or 1860 Census.

However, a George Ludwig, age 16, was living with George Crites and the above mentioned (widowed and now remarried) Mary Elizabeth Fink Ludwig Crites in Pickaway Co., Oh in the 1860 Census.

G.W. (George Washington) Ludwig, my g-g grandfather was in the Ohio 58th Infantry out of Pickaway County in the Civil War (Company I, which formed the day before his 18th birthday, October 30, 1861) so I assume this is likely the same George Ludwig of the 1860 Census of the same county (He had not yet turned 17 at the time of that Census).

I speculate that William Ludwig died before 1850 and that his son George went to live with his grandmother Mary E. Fink Ludwig Crites.

What I don't know is any details about Jacob Ludwig and Mary E. Fink's son William. When was he born? Where is he buried?

The other three children of Jacob and Mary moved to Allen Co., OH, but I can find no information about William.

Can anyone help?
Lawyers in Lima -- c. 1870s-1880s

I've just learned that my great grandfather, William Cunningham, who died in Lima in 1887 at the age of 39, was a lawyer.

Can anyone point me to any compilations of lawyers practicing in Lima (or Ohio that would include Lima or Allen County) in the 1870s or 1880s or suggest how this piece of information may help me find out more about him? I am not necessarily looking for specific information about him, although that would be terrific, but information about lawyers in Lima or Allen County in that time period. Were there any bar associations? Any directories of lawyers? Any special collections of lawyers' files in museums or historical societies? That sort of thing. Also, I think most lawyers of that era did not go to law school as they would today, but studied with an older lawyer and then were admitted to the bar. Can anyone confirm that?

Also, anyone willing to do a look-up for me -- I am in New York City -- to see if there was an obituary in the newspaper? His date of death was February 2, 1887.

Do probate records still exist for 1887?

Of course, if anyone recognizes my great grandfather's name, that would be wonderful.

Thanks! Please feel free to e-mail me directly.

Rich Cunningham
richcunninghamny@aol.com

Looking for any information on Sam Rice and Melissa BEDINGER (BIEDINGER, Biddinger ) who had two children in Allen County, OH. Their two children, Hazel RICE born 1984 and Osa/Ora RICE , born 1986. These children were living with their maternal grandparent Rachel BEDINGER in Ottowa Township, Allen County during the 1910 Census. What happened to Melissa and Sam? What happened to these kids?Has anyone seen them in the 1900 Census? Sam and Melissa were married in Jay County, Indiana on 10 December 1887. This was a second marriage for Sam RICE. He was born in 1861 in Darke Co, OH but was orphaned within a year. Melissa was born in Mercer Co, OH in 1868. Her parents were James Biddinger & Rachel Hughes. James and Rachel came from Darke County, OH and were married there. I have been looking for these people for over 20 years, but cannot find and listing of their death. Sam is my Great Grandfather. A lengthy pedigree chart is available for the RICE family. If anyone has information on these four people, please contact me. Thank you, Atlaspc12@aol.com

Obit: Rex KLINGLER -- Lima Ohio

obit:
Rex Klingler was a man cut from a different cloth, a different era, a hardworking family man who earned all his many blessings. He was a member of our Greatest Generation, who devoted his life to serving his country, his family, and the people around him.

Rex's story began on a warm summer day in 1921, in the little town of Lima, Ohio. Those were such good days in this country, as the Roaring 20s began. On September 2, 1921, Ross and Cretora (Rex) Klingler had even more to celebrate, with the birth of a baby boy, a son they named Ira.

Ira would be called Rex the rest of his life, and grew up in Detroit, Michigan with his brother Eldon, where he graduated from Southwestern High School.

After high school, the strapping young Rex played semi-professional hockey, in the heart of the original Hockeytown, USA. He also met a beautiful young woman named Virginia Marie Ryan, and the two quickly fell in love. By then World War II had thundered to our shores, and Rex knew it was time to serve his country. So he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and quickly married his beloved Virginia, on June 26, 1943 in Detroit.

The new groom soon served on the USS Topeka, seeing plenty of action in the South Pacific and in the waters of Tokyo, too. After he was discharged after the war's end, Rex returned to Detroit, ready to claim his share of the American Dream he'd fought so bravely for. Rex went to work for the Detroit Public Schools as an engineer, staying the next 41 years until his retirement.

Rex and Virginia were soon blessed with two wonderful children, son Gary and daughter Janet, who filled their lives with so much fun, fond memories, and family. As the years went by, Rex became a proud grandfather to six grandkids, and later eight great-grandkids, too!

After he retired, Rex and his beloved Virginia wintered in Englewood, Florida, which he loved for the chance to play golf year-round. The couple eventually moved to the Holland, Michigan area, to be closer to their kids and grandkids. Family was always the most important part of Rex's life.

Sadly, Rex died peacefully at Lifehouse Assisted Living in Holland, on March 30, 2007, at the age of 85.

Rex was a wonderful man, who lived a wonderful life, a life he worked so hard for, fought for, and deserved so deeply, full of fond memories and the family he loved most of all.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 64 years Virginia and two children: Gary (Colleen) Klingler of Holland and daughter Janet (Steve) Clapp of Pinckney, Michigan and his six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Jennifer (Jerry) Pray and girls Taylor Anne and Jordan Elizabeth of Bartlett, Illinois, Jason (Cindy) Klingler of Traverse City, Mi, Hope (Aaron) Haase and baby Aspen Marie of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Ryan (Rebecca) Klingler and little Gina Rene and Drew Michael of Holland, Gary (Leah) Klingler and children April Mae, Autumn Rose and Tobias Rex of Holland, Ross Michael Klingler of Holland, His sister-in-law Esther Klingler of Virginia Beach, Va., and brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Marilyn Ryan of Dearborn Hts and two nieces and two nephews. Rex was preceded in death by his brother Eldon R. Klingler and his parents.

Visitation and funeral at Mulder Funeral Chapel Wednesday, April 4 from 10:00-12:00, funeral will be celebrated at noon Wednesday with Father Fred Hoesli presiding. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Resthaven in Holland, MI. Burial at Ferndale Cemetery in Riverview, Michigan. Please visit www.lifestorynet.com to read his Life Story, sign the guestbook, or share a memory of Rex.

Well, it seems I have two other possibilites for family in the Allen Co area.

I am looking for obits for George Battels/Battel and his wife, Louisa (Snider) Battels/Battel. Louisa was born in 1846 in Fairfield Co., OH. I believe she died before 1900 since the 1900 census shows George as a widow. George was born in May 1846. I have no further information on either George or Louisa.

I am also looking for Louisa's sister, Mary M (Snider) Gallant. Mary was born about 1855 and married C Jandson Gallant. I know they had a child (George W who married Flora) that was living in Ottawa Twp, Allen Co., OH. I have no further information on Mary or C Jandson. If anyone can give me additional information on either one of these families I would appreciate it.

Thanks for your help...Mary Jo
